Barbados

WHEN YOUR BEST FRIEND CALLS YOU UP TO TELL YOU SHE’S GOING TO BE GETTING HITCHED IN BARBADOS AND WANTS YOU TO GIVE HER AWAY, MANY THOUGHTS RUN THROUGH YOUR MIND. FOR MOST PEOPLE IT WOULD BE ‘AWW, I’M SO TOUCHED’, OR ‘HELL, THIS IS GONNA BE EXPENSIVE’. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE BRIDE-TO-BE, MY HEART-WARMING REACTION WAS TO IMMEDIATELY GET ON THE NET AND FIND OUT WHAT THE WAVES WOULD BE LIKE AT THAT TIME OF YEAR.

Throughout the trip, my inquisitive and surf-starved nature led me to drive around pretty much every inch of coastline on the island in search of waves. Luckily for me, Barbados is pretty small.

Barbados

If blue skies, 26 degree water and turtles bobbing in a friendly line-up are your cup of tea, then you will want to drink a gallon of Barbados. As well as experiencing my first ever bikini surf sessions, i got to surf small but perfectly formed waves every day, and drink my fill of Mount Gay rum. Heavenly! Words and photos: Fern cargill.

An Evening with Rod Sumpter & Gwyn Haslock What a pleasure to return from the snowy peaks of Vermont to crisp blue Cornish skies, pumping surf and a night at the Driftwood with ex-pro Aussi surfing legend Rod Sumpter...Kernow at its best. A last minute decision, the Droskin massif discreetly trudged into the back of the Driftwood. Squeezing past the Finisterre crew, knocking over bar stalls and disturbing new babies in our wake, we gathered in the miniature cinema. The film: ‘Oceans’, a 1970’s classic, the first showing in 35 years of Rod Sumpters incredible surfing compilaition, filmed in Hawaii, California and islands of the Pacific. Comprising of awesome footage of Barry K and Gerry Lopez in Hawaii, Brad McCaul and Jeff Hackman in France, and Peter Drouyn and Peers Pittard in South Africa. All accompanied by retro tunes from the era, everything from The Doors to the Beach Boys. You need this film in your collection!

But by far the highlight of the evening, a film on local surfing legend, 67 year old Gwyn Haslock from Truro. A truly up close and personal presentation of Gwyns epic discovery and enjoyment of the Cornish ocean on a belly board, body board and long board, currently preferring an 8ft mal. Rod Sumpter, follows Gwyns surf safari around Cornwall looking for her prefered clean 2-3 footer. It’s an honest presentation of Cornwall’s cold-water surfing culture, even capturing Gwyn on a cheeky wave at Swanpool! Weather and swell are shot through car windows, using decidedly curious angles, Rod and Gwyn present nearly all of Cornwall’s breaks. Style she has, there is no doubt, both paddling out through the lines or riding the greens in. Timing, balance and attitude, Gwyn chooses her waves carefully. Us girlies can learn a lot from this fine lady for sure. Whether it be rain or shine, glass or chop, Gwyn is keen but definitely knows her limits! When the lights go on, Gwyn is sitting right opposite us. “Fancy a wave tomorrow Gwyn?” Reply: “well I’m meeting Rod at 9 ish to check Gwithian, but yes, if it’s any good ill come and check it out”! Big up Gwyn! Pleasure to meet you, and very much look forward to seeing you out the back at Drosser sometime soon. Vicky Gould

I was half expecting to turn up and see big marquees and loudspeakers and the usual surf-comp-circus stuff going on, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a single, small marquee

with 20 or so people huddled under it sheltering from the horrendous weather. This comp wasn’t about the big brands and the ‘surf lifestyle’ it was all about celebrating old-school surfboards and the classic style that goes with them. The first few rounds saw lads and ladies going head-to-head

big turns and a couple of airs on a little 80’s looking single fin shortboard. Despite some stylish, vintage surfing from the girls, it came down to an exciting all-male finale, where at one point all four surfers were up and riding at the same time, giving the judges something to multi-task over. Alan Stokes snatched the final with some big hacking turns, despite a huge straight air landed by Tobie D (on a board that’s older than he is), and some reverse take offs from Jimbo Al Bennet for good measure.

Green wave After months of trying to improve my surfing, process is finally being made. A

beautiful April morning was the setting; the sun was

shining, the waves small and frequent and the beach empty. Julia and Iwalked down the cliffs through coconut scented gorse bushes and down to expansive low tide beach at Crantock. After several recent unsuccessful surfing sessions, the self-doubt

was starting to kick in.

Wading through waist high white water I was irrationally feeling quite nervous. After a few moments of procrastination I paddled for my first wave. Got it, now for the pop up. Toes under, jump, twist the hips and up. Wahooo!

Success. My first green wave, progress at last! Words and photo: Hanna Richardson.

STOKED? - tell us about it! Remember that day, at that beach, where there was that fun little wave? You’ve got a photo of it somewhere, you know you do. That stuff is gold. It’s the kind of thing you like hearing about when you read an issue of The Slideshow. It’s simple stuff - dig that cool photo out, write a sentence about it, send it to The Slideshow. It’s your chance to be part of this great new community and be published through The Slideshow magazine! Or even if you are just plain AMPED about the sea and want to tell the world. The Slideshow
