Slovenia is also the third most forested country in Europe and with 27,000 km of rivers it is also rich in water. Slovenia has 2,000,000 inhabitants which is the same as the city of Paris. Thus, it’s a very sparsely populated country. Average height above sea level: 556.8 m

The Coast Every kilometre of the Slovene coast is a new surprise. Here is a natural reserve with a rich fund of marl and sandstone and the unique, eighty-metre Strunjan cliff, the highest flysch wall on the Adriatic coast. Here are the Sečovlje saltworks, first mentioned in the 13th century, and nearby is a sanctuary for more than 150 bird species. Here the towns of Piran, Izola, and Koper draw visitors with their medieval cores, while Portorož, though mentioned as early as 1251, offers numerous modern hotels with congress halls, a fully equipped marina, a sport airport, thermal baths, a casino, and a varied offer of summer cultural, entertainment, and sport events. Not far from the coast, the beauties of Slovene Istria with its picturesque villages await you. Among them, for example, is Hrastovlje with its Holy Trinity church decorated with narrative late Gothic frescoes including a marvelously preserved Danse Macabre.

Enjoy the local handicrafts, taste the typical local dishes like jota (a soup with pickled cabbage), bobiči (corn soup), polenta (corn porridge), cod, fish soup, fish specialities and typical local wines.

The Emerald Land ... in Nova Gorica with shades of red roses ... The Solkan Bridge is a famous bridge with the longest stone arch in the world and once represented a significant part of the railway link between Trieste and Vienna. Gambling has more than thirty years of tradition. Beside slot machines and saloons there are still the most exciting table games at the largest casino in Europe, owned by the company HIT, d.d. Goriška radicchio is winter vegetables, recognisable by its similarity to a rose.

The Emerald Land Where Life Flows in Colours

In north-western Slovenia, between the Alps and the Mediterranean, there is a unique world where life runs in colours. It has always been lively here since different worlds and cultures have been intertwining for centuries. It starts in the north with the spectacular spring of the karst alpine Soča River which brings the emerald stream to the surface. Its magical colour, which is simply unique, intertwines with other natural beauties on its way to the sea. They all, each in its own colour, form the beautiful Emerald Land: the Soča Valley, Idrija and Cerkno, Brda, Nova Gorica, Vipava Valley and Karst. Experience in our destination is the experience of good energy.

Idrija Lace Festival is a tribute to the tradition of lace-making, come to Idija in summer. Idrijski žlikrofi (Idrija dumplings) are local culinary specialty with the European trademark protection.

The view from Cerje, from where you can embrace the Alps and the Adriatic Sea at the same time. The Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea attracts many hikers, cyclists and other lovers of active holidays. Teran PTP wine and prosciutto create a perfect harmony of flavours. Quality red wine with a distinctive aroma fits the prosciutto with EU protected geographical indication.

... in the emerald Soča Valley ...

... in blue depths of Idrija and Cerkno ... Anthony’s Shaft is one of the oldest, still preserved, mine entrances that leads into the Idrija mercury mine. It is inscribed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage. Franja Partisan Hospital is one of the best-equipped hospitals of WW2.

Otliško okno (Otlica natural Window) is a karst phenomenon, the natural opening in the form of water drop, from which a wonderful view of the Vipava Valley opens. Tastes of Vipava Valley is a traditional festival of wine and cuisine, which takes place in May at the Zemono Mansion. Vipavska jota is a stew made from sour turnip or cabbage, beans and potatoes.

... with the scarlet beauty of the Karst region ...

Welcome to the Emerald Land where you can gain a lot of energy, experience and discover genuine flavours...

Jumping off a 17 metre bridge in Kanal is an intense adrenaline jumping competition, which attracts a large number of visitors. Kogoj’s Days is the international festival of contemporary music that attracts numerous music lovers in autumn. Rich offer of trout from local fish farms prepared in hundred and one ways can be tasted in Plave.

... through the green beauty of the Vipava Valley ...

... in the golden yellow reflection of Goriška Brda hills... Šmartno is a charming Renaissance village on a hill with a view of the picturesque landscape. Cherry Festival is the biggest event in Goriška Brda in June. At that time the landscape is enriched by cherries that were already worshipped in imperial Vienna. Frtalja is a typical meal of Brda - fried omelette made of beaten eggs and a blend of fresh, finely chopped herbs.

The Soča Valley The Soča Valley, which connects three small, hospitable and friendly towns of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin, is the first among the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) in Slovenia. Along the valley the emerald Soča River winds, which springs under the mighty peaks of the Julian Alps in the heart of Triglav National Park. It is one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, so there is no coincidence that the Disney fairy tale The Chronicles of Narnia was filmed here. The Soča Valley with its treasures is a perfect destination for active visitors.

Kayaking on the Soča, Archive LTO Sotočje

Water activities From April to October the Soča white waters become a challenge for water sports enthusiasts. Visitors can try kayaking, rafting and hydro speeding or explore picturesque gorges and pools of Soča tributaries on guided tours. You can also enjoy a comfortable voyage on a lake at Most na Soči, while in summer the Soča River is pleasant for swimming; even more popular among swimmers and warmer are the rivers Nadiža and Idrijca. Paragliding and hang-gliding Due to the excellent conditions paragliding and hang-gliding are rapidly developing and there are a number of

competitions in the Soča valley every year at national, European and global level. The most important take-offs are at the Mangart Saddle (1,960 m), Stol (1,400 m) and Kobala (1,800 m). Cycling The extreme diversity of the landscape offers easier tours, suitable for families, as well as the most demanding ascents. Road cyclists should not miss the ascent over Vršič (1,611 m), the highest road pass in Slovenia, and the ascent along the highest Slovenian mountain road that leads to the Mangart Saddle (2,040 m). For more leisurely pedalling select the routes in the valleys of the Soča, Koritnica, Nadiža, Tolminka, Idrijca and Bača Rivers.

Hiking The Soča Valley and the surrounding peaks are crossed by a variety of hiking trails. Apart from visiting nearby attractions on foot, going for a ramble along the rivers, roaming the scenic ridges and climbing to the mountain peaks, you can have a real trip to the rich history and culture. Thematic hiking trails are quite popular – the two most famous are the Alpe Adria Trail, which is a 750 km long route from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, and the Walk of Peace, which connects the monuments and remains from the First World War and the Isonzo Front; their stories complement the wonderful nature along the trail.

Šempeter - Vrtojba The municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba is situated where the Vrtojba-Bilje knolls meet the fertile plain. Green forests, vineyards, fields and meadows make the region colourful and vivacious. The Vrtojba-Bilje hills offer the best conditions for growing grapes, fruit, vegetables and flowers, which is why the region is known as the Garden of the Goriška Region. Visitors can enjoy the lush landscape and climb the hill Markov Hrib above Šempeter pri Gorici and the St. Ot hill, which offer marvellous views of the nearby surroundings. Through the territory of the Municipality ŠempeterVrtojba also takes place The Walk of Peace, which from the Alps to the Adriatic connects the rich cultural and natural heritage along the onetime Isonzo Front and belongs to important European heritage of historical interest.

The Križna Jama Cave

A primeval attraction in the underground world

Križna jama (Cross Cave) is a world renowned karst cave, its special features are its underwater lakes with barriers of calcareous sinter and the site is filled with bones of cave bears. The dry tour With a torch in hand, you can tour the dry part of the cave which gets dark after just a few metres. The special feature of this first part of the cave is its big halls. Other passages are found in places interrupted with calcareous sinter stumps or rocks, water-filled hollows and smaller stalactites. Skeleton The tour continues to the Big hall and the Čimboras (the Chimborazo) stalactite where visitors can admire an exceptional curiosity – the display of the cave bears’ bones which amaze not only with their size, but also abundance. The largest skeleton of a cave bear ever found in the

Kalvarija; Photo: Gašper Modic

world can be found here. The path continues through a passage which drains water from the First Lake. After a 10 minute boat ride across the lake the tour returns to the exit by the same path. TIP: Take along a pair of long trousers, a sweater and an extra pair of warm socks. The long water tour In order to protect the cave, this section can only be visited by one group of up to four visitors per day. The tour takes approximately 3.5 – 4 hours. From the First Lake the tour goes across the rocks all the way to the Second Lake. In the middle the ceiling lowers making the crossing towards the characteristic water passage rather difficult and is the sign that you are about to embark on an unforgettable journey. The water runs over the barriers, out from a small lake into another. The barriers are built from calcareous sinter which is discharged from two creeks running from the Bloke plateau. The barriers and the

water surface keep rising. The water flows over the stalactites standing on the floor, groups of which give the impression that they are growing from of water (the Venetian haven, the Pirate ship, the Organ, the Lynx). The lakes are up to six metres deep. The journey ends at the Kalvarija (the Calvary), a hall rich with stalactites, where the cave splits into the northern section – Blata (the Muddy Pit), and the north eastern section – Pisani Rov (the Motley Pit). Again, the exit is reached by returning along the same path. SCHEDULE: An hour long tour on weekends and holidays at 3 pm, other days by prior arrangement. Longer tours are possible any day by prior arrangement only.

SCHEDULE A ONE HOUR TOUR OF THE DRY SECTION OF THE CAVE – GROUP TOUR April, May, June > on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 3:00pm July, August > every day at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm September > every day at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm FOUR HOUR TOUR OF THE ACTIVE SECTION OF THE CAVE – FOR TRUE CAVE LOVERS In order to protect the cave, this section can only be visited by one group of up to 4 visitors per day. Postojna Cave Green Karst

Postojna Cave train

Po s tojna Cave One of the most recognisable and beautiful natural sights in Slovenia is Postojna Cave which has been attracting visitors from far and wide for centuries. Postojna Cave is Slovenia’s greatest tourist attraction. The cave Postojna Cave, with 21 kilometres of explored tunnels, is one of the longest caves in the world, in the elite group of underground caves with the greatest number of stalactites. Postojna Cave attributes a large part of its fame to the fact that the cave system is easily accessible for tourists. If there is one cave that you should visit, then it’s this one. Over 36 million people have visited already. A tour through the cave will last approximately 90 minutes. Highlights on the tour include the enormous Congress Hall where festivities are regularly organised, the Great Mountain, the Russian Bridge, Spaghetti Hall, the White Hall, the Red Room Concert Hall and the five metre high white stalagmite - the Brilliant.

38

All on board! Postojna Cave is unique for its double track railway, no other cave in the world has one. Visitors travel 3.7 kilometres by train through the cave, the only subway in Slovenia.

The Slovenia Times Summer guide 2015

The Brilliant, most beautiful stalagmite in Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave Green Karst

The undisputed star among inhabitants of Postojna Cave is the olm, Proteus anguinus

Meet the “baby dragons” Since the middle of the 17th century, Postojna Cave has been of interest to natural scientists and is therefore considered the cradle of speleobiology, the science of subterranean life. The Postojna underground world is inhabited by around 150 different animal species, one is the “human fish” or olm. These small skinned creatures are called human fish because of their light skin. Once people thought they were the offspring of dragons. Olms are blind and can live up to 100 years. You can meet the olm in the Proteus Vivarium.

EXPO Postojna Cave Karst The exhibition is also interesting for children as it is very attractive. In an interactive way they learn about the mysterious power of nature at creating unique karst phenomena. Children are accompanied by a cave beetle “drobnovratnik” and a human fish, they can ride the real cave train, measure how many thousands of years does a stalagmite need to reach their height, discover the cave figurines and much more. Educational, interactive, fun. Welcome!

Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle Predjama Castle is only 10km from Postojna Cave. Nestled into a 123m high rock wall, sits one of the most picturesque wonders of human history – Predjama Castle which has been a dominant feature for more than 700 years. It is massive, threatening and unconquerable. It was perfect as the secret domicile of the daring, stubborn and persistent Erasmus Lueger (Erazem Predjamski) who is described in a romantic and beautiful story about a robber.

Kranjska Gora

In the northwest of Slovenia there is a fairy tale land which offers thousands of pleasures on the snow in winter and an escape from the unbearable heat to pleasant shade for everyone who wants an active holiday, full of experiences, in summer. We are, of course, speaking about one of the most beautiful mountain jewels – KRANJSKA GORA.

Cycling You can decide for a lazy pedalling style or for more demanding journeys into the heart of the Alpine valleys. You will work up a sweat and get a tan on the steep slopes of the Karavanke range. On the bicycle trail of three countries, which starts at the three-country border with Austria and Italy, a visit to Bled through the Valley Radovna is highly recommended. A bicycle route map and lunch in your backpacks might be the best way to get to know the Zgornjesavska Valley. The trail is in perfect condition all the way until Mojstrana. You can also take many detours from this main trail. If you are an adrenaline buff, then the Kranjska Gora Bike Park with its courses offers everything you could wish for, including the Children’s Bike Park. Hiking events

Hiking is definitely amongst the most popular summer activities. There are plenty of trails for everyone, from the easiest recreational hikes to serious Alpine tours, which demand experience, appropriate equipment and a mountain guide. The first wonderful trail can be found in the confines of the Triglav National Park – The Triglavska Bistrica Trail in Vrata is a true experience of nature – the Peričnik Waterfall, the Galleries, the

gable of the Vrata and the mighty Triglav Northern Wall. Conquering Triglav via this wall is a real achievement. You can also have mysterious experiences in the Valley Kot, from where the road along the Radovna Valley leads you to the Gorge (Vintgar). Those who enjoy the sight of a precipice have to experience the challenging trail to Prisank from Vršič. Those who like safer sights can discover the road to Slemenova špica, the meditative solitude of the panoramic forest walk from Vršič to the lakes with a view of the magnificent Jalovec. Perhaps the most beautiful trail in the

Gorenjska / Slovenian Alps Zgornjesavska Valley is the trail to the first and second Martuljek Waterfall. Nordic walking Kranjska Gora offers many opportunities for this ever more popular version of simple walking. There are instructors available and you can also borrow poles.

Russian Chapel Towards the top of the winding road to the Vršič pass there is a chapel built to honour the memory of Russian prisoners of war who were buried by a huge avalanche during the construction of the road. At the top of the pass you can admire the Ajdovska Deklica, the face of a young woman visible in the rock of the north face of the Prisank mountain.

Cultural sights SLOVENIAN ALPINE MUSEUM, MOJSTRANA In the Slovenian Alpine Museum the past and present walk together. A rich collection of objects with versatile historical backgrounds, versatile photographic and archival material and a comprehensive technical library offer visitors an insight into the mass appeal and importance of Alpine activities in Slovenia.

THE KAJŽNK HOUSE, RATEČE Belongs in the category of renovated objects with well preserved folk architecture. In it you can see a reconstruction of a black kitchen and pantry, exhibitions of Rateče folk garb and local history, old films on still preserved customs and the Planica ski jumping competition and an exhibition of handiwork made by members of the Rateče-Planica Tourist Association. Tržič Mountain Kingdom of stories and wonders The region of Tržič is a paradise for those who seek romantic secrets. Old locals of Tržič know that in ancient times dragons used to walk around here. One of them is to blame for the emergence of Tržič. Today, when the dragons apparently no longer exist, a sense of peace and immense beauty of forest and mountain paths prevails. But let the travellers not be misled in those places - here each stone has its own story. Tržič is a place where all the stories are true.

In the Dovžan Gorge alone there are thousands of such stories. In its walls, 300 million years old, thousands of fossils can be found from the time when even dragons did not exist. The roads in Tržič region are not so old, but they were already here at the time of the ancient Rome. At that time, the wagons rattled through Ljubelj Pass, but today annual race of old-timers takes place.

Local views are also breath-taking. The Tržič region is a luxury of routes where trekkers, mountaineers, climbers, mountain bikers, scouts, fans of adrenaline, hang gliders, parachutists, touring skiers, ski jumpers, snowboarders, fishermen, hunters remain breathless, and also historians, geologists, poets and lovers of all beautiful things. A lot of famous people lived here. For example, Marshal Radetzky who is known worldwide due the Strauss’ Radetzky March. The world record holder among astronauts Sunita Williams has her roots here, the first record holder in ski jumping Jože Šlibar, the beginner of ski hysteria Bojan Križaj and Olympic snowboarder Žan Košir. Which is not surprising, say the locals.

Žirovnica

You are invited to visit the cradle of Slovene beekeeping and culture, Žirovnica. To be exact, the collection of villages under Stol (mountain), joined together into the Municipality of Žirovnica. After being warmly welcomed in the peaceful rural environment, you will be taken through the picturesque countryside and introduced to our rich cultural traditions gathered along the Path of Cultural Heritage.

A visit to Janša’s Bee House in Breznica Anton Janša, a notable apiarist, started his beekeeping journey in his native Breznica. Sitting by his home bee house almost 300 years ago he started building up his extensive knowledge of bees. Soon he became well-known across the Austrian lands and the first royally appointed teacher of beekeeping in Vienna. A practical presentation of beekeeping and a visit to the honey products shop in Selo. With its fourth generation of beekeepers, Noč’s family is a family with a rich beekeeping tradition. Today Anton and his son Boštjan manage over 300 hives. During the pasture season they move them to pastures all across Slovenia which provides them with a wide

range of different types of honey. The only bee species found in their hives is the Carniolan honey bee. They breed the queen bees of this autochthonous race at the Carniolan bee breeding station in Završnica. Noč’s beekeepers will introduce you to the life of a bee, the work of a beekeeper in a genuine bee house and invite you to a bee house shop where you can supply yourself with honey and different honey products of your choice.

The bird of paradise is yet another of Bled’s specialities. A peacock-shaped brooch was found in the area dating from the 6th century, symbolising the source of life and fortune, and you may buy a replica in Bled as a souvenir – ranging in size from a small brooch to a golden pendant or even a paperweight.

Bled With its green-blue lake, the little island with its church and the medieval castle on the crags above, Bled is the most famous view of Slovenia. This tourist gem of international fame located at the edge of the Triglav National Park, was among the nominees for seven new wonders of the World! You can enjoy the lake - which was the venue of the World Rowing Championship in 2011 - on a traditional wooden boat called a pletna, or drive around the perimeter by horse and carriage (the good old fijaker). Further to this, you can find here a wealth of cultural heritage and boundless possibilities for mountain recreation, you may also look after your well-being as the traditions of cosmopolitan spa tourism reaching back to 19th century are preserved by the excellent wellness centres and spa’s.

Bohinj Located in Triglav National Park, the glacial valley of Bohinj is considered one of the most beautiful valleys within the Julian Alps. Bohinj covers 333 km2 and contains 24 typical alpine villages and settlements. The valley’s trademark is the beautiful Lake Bohinj, famous for its turquoise waters which lie between Bohinj’s mountains which rise to 2,000 metres. Its calm waters and the scenery create an atmosphere of infinite tranquillity. Merely a 30 minute drive from Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj is the largest lake in Slovenia.

Hike

Lake Bohinj

Take a walk along the picturesque Mostnica Gorge beside its fast-flowing water or climb through a green forest to the Savica Waterfall. You can also follow the 11 kilometre trail around Lake Bohinj. Climb Bohinj is an excellent starting point for climbing Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak (2,864m). Bike Discover Bohinj by bike. Last summer a new bicycle bridge next to Camp Danica opened new bike routes through the valley. Cross green meadows and follow the Sava Bohinjka River. From Bohinj you can also hike to Pokljuka and visit the biathlon centre at the top of the plateau. Sail, swim, fish The clear water of Lake Bohinj is great for a swim or to dive into, to sail or fish.

Lake Bohinj, the jewel in the centre of a scattering of villages in northern Gorenjska, is absolutely breathtaking. Go early in the morning, out of season, just before the sun rises over the adjacent peaks, to experience its awe. Mist shrouds the banks of this still and flat alpine wonder. The pure quiet of this location really brings nature to life. Only birdsong emanates from the surrounding Eden, the splash of one of Bohinj’s yellowbellied fish or the crash of the Savica Waterfall in the mid distance. Perhaps the only other detectable sound is the flap of the wings of large birds in flight over this crystal clear lake. By Bohinj you can literally be at one with yourself and peace is unavoidable. Mostnica Gorge The numerous signs, typically carved in log planks, direct you to this hidden gem. Korita Mostnica, a tiny bridge tucked away in the hills behind Stara Fužina and the lake, connects the two sides of a deeply spectacular gorge. Take in the splendid view of Triglav while the turquoise torrent swirls below.

Savica Waterfall

The legend of Goldenhorn and the magical flower

Your time spent in Bohinj would not be complete without a trip to one of Slovenia’s greatest waterfalls, Slap Savica. You can reach the waterfall with a one hour walk on a thickly forested slope, weather permitting. The waterfall itself drops a towering 78 metres into a large water sink located 500 metres above ground level. Well known Slovenian poets and writers often write about this natural phenomenon. Cable car ride on Vogel For breathtaking views and vistas of Lake Bohinj below and the surrounding Triglav National Park, catch the cable car to the top of Vogel. Whether you are a nature lover or an adrenaline junkie, this is the spot to be. Tranquillity, easy hikes and treks on one side and a mountain bike park, paragliding, zip-line, starting points for long distance hikes on the other. There is something for everyone. For children there is a completely new playground in the fairy tale land of goldhorn. It takes only 5 minutes to climb 1,500 metres above sea level. Savica Waterfall

In the legend, the Goldenhorn (Zlatorog) - now the symbolic animal of the Triglav National Park - is shot by a young hunter who is in love and blinded with desire for treasure guarded by the animal. A magical flower growing on Triglav heals the Goldenhorn’s wound, and the animal takes his revenge upon the hunter before leaving, never to be seen again, along with the treasure. Have respect for nature!

Fairy tale sleepover A fairy tale village of holiday chalets nestles in the heart of the Vogel ski resort at 1,537 metres with a gorgeous view of Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia, and its surrounding mountains. Visit the Vogel Alpine Village for the ultimate alpine experience in Slovenia. In the heart of Triglav National Park you can see that the mountains are closer here than anywhere else. Cow’s Ball and other events On the third Sunday in September, Ukanc is the venue of the Cow Ball (Kravji Bal), a traditional event that seeks to preserve the old traditions of Bohinj pastoral farming and cheese-making that accompanied the return of cowherds and their cattle from the high mountain pastures. Every spring Bohinj hosts the International Wild Flower Festival, whilst in summer there are midsummer nights and the Bohinj Musical Summer Festival, that features some of the very best classical musicians. On various locations 8th Hiking Festival in Bohinj and 6th Fly Fishing Festival will take place.

BOHINJSKO/FROM BOHINJ Local culinary specialties from Bohinj include mohant cheese, zaseka with sausage, and žganci made from the local Bohinj corn. Numerous traditional dishes originate from the kitchens of local inns, and new ones which connect local ingredients with modern tastes are constantly emerging. The fajfa (smoking pipe) from Gorjuše, hand-knitted socks made from sheep wool and wooden basket called deža are typical and traditional products from Bohinj. Most hand-made souvenirs relate to the local breed of cattle known as cika and the floral richness, which are closely connected with the local way of life. The Bohinjsko/from Bohinj sign guarantees geographic origin and the high quality of products and services.

Š ko f j a Loka One loka, two valleys, three highlands, infinite stories Škofja Loka, the best preserved medieval town in Slovenia, inspires with its many stories. A rich tradition in trade and craftsmanship echoes from the past, resounding in the ancient squares, with a mosaic of events which attract many visitors throughout the year to the town under the Škofja Loka castle. The beauty of the 1,000 year old town is complemented by the Selška and Poljanska valleys which preserve the tradition of almost forgotten crafts and enthral visitors with a palette of active adventures. The Škofja Loka hills and the Sorško Polje plain offer a wealth of options for hikers and a variety of organised and marked trails for cyclists at different difficulty levels.

Culinary delights from the Loka countryside, prepared according to the recipes of our grandmothers; bread from a baker’s oven, cake “potica”, rolled dumplings, zgantzi, “Loška smojka” (baked small turnip filled with millet groats), “Loška mešanica”(Loka mixture made of barley, beans, sour turnip and cabbage), Visoko roast and many more – these seasonal dishes can be tasted in selected inns where you are more than welcome.

Do not leave without seeing the underground fortress system of the Rupnik Line and venture into its mysterious interior with an experienced guide.

Kranj

Even a fleeting glance over Kranj gives the impression that it is a pleasant old town which strives toward keeping its historical riches, yet be modern and attractive for locals as well as for visitors. Being the third largest city in Slovenia, Kranj is the economic, cultural and sporting centre of Carniola. With nearly 56,000 inhabitants, Kranj represents a good quarter of the region’s entire population and one-third of all corporations are based there. Kranj is also an educational centre with interesting secondary, higher education and university programmes. The town’s advantages lay surely in its geographical location: it is only 7km to the International Airport Brnik and there is a railway connection to Central Europe; motorways are close and it is only 50km to the Austrian and Italian borders. As well as the town itself, the surroundings of Kranj are pleasant and inviting. They offer green retreats, a number of relaxation spots and endless hiking and cycling possibilities.

Pick a trail: Kranj wants to be cyclist-friendly and it is improving the cycling infrastructure. There are four marked cycling trails from Kranj toward the north which border the three neighbouring municipalities: Naklo, Tržič and Preddvor. All four trails are designed for recreational cycling and offer peaceful moments in the nature and some wonderful views. On the trails cyclists will pass numerous meadows and fields and traverse through fresh forests. Along the way keep your eyes open for interesting things such as a heron or even a stork, a little church on a hill, a monument or a tourist farm.

During the warmer months from May till October, the auditorium of the open air theatre, Khislstein enriches the cultural beat of Kranj. Standing in the embrace of the Kranj medieval wall, it is intended for concerts and theatre. Visitors from near and far travel to Kranj at the end of July, drawn by the most popular entertainment event in the Gorenjska region – Kranfest festival with the traditional Kranj Night. Offering a rich and varied programme of entertainment, the event ranks among the largest Slovene festivals, attracting more than 10,000 visitors from all parts of Slovenia. The most successful musicians improve their knowledge as well as get and give new ideas at the International Kranj Jazz Kamp. Slovene and foreign jazz and pop musicians gather and perform their songs in Kranj every August.

beef tongue with horseradish, served as a Sunday afternoon treat in autumn and winter. Other Ljubljana specialties include the Ljubljana egg dish, frog legs from the Ljubljana Moors, Ljubljana strudel, fried chicken drumsticks (very popular as a snack with workers on the Ljubljanica river) and of course the Ljubljana cake. Legend has it that the cake was first created by a cook who wanted to cheer up the sad daughter of the Lord of Ljubljana Castle. Today, you can find something to everyones liking in Ljubljana. The city has many restaurants and their offer varies from traditional Slovenian to Asian food.

Great views, different sounds, strange smells, good feelings; travelling is an experience absorbed by many senses. But let’s not forget to put our taste to the test and explore the flavours of the destinations. The Heart of Travel along tastes Slovenia invites you to join the table. In Slovenia there are no less than 24 gastronomic regions represented by almost 200 dishes. In the centre of the country it all comes together. The restaurants and traditional gostilnas in Ljubljana and its 25 surrounding municipalities serve a fine selection of national and local dishes.

Long culinary tradition Ljubljana has a long culinary tradition. Already, hundreds of years ago, you could buy fish from the Adriatic Sea as well as fish from the Danube, from the Ljubljana market. Over time, many specialties have been developed in the kitchens of Ljubljana, like the Ljubljana pancakes with a cottage-cheese and tarragon filling. In Dol pri Ljubljani, the Pr’ Krač tourist farm dominates the culinary scene of Dol. The house specialty is the juicy roast knuckle of veal. Trzin is a village of butchers. No surprise then that a heavily smoked meat sausage is the local piece de resistance. Domžale Lenček cream cake is the dish of Domžale. Mengeš is home to a thick and delicious local stew. In the pottery village, Komenda, tripe stew and vampi goulash is a popular dish. In Vodice, the Vodice pretzel is the local treat. Near Kamnik you can find Velika Planina where the salty Trnič cheese is made. Balls of this cheese were only made in pairs because their shape resembled women breasts. ‘World famous’ in Slovenia are the doughnuts (krofi) from Trojane near Lukovica. In Moravče, the former horse carriage driver’s inn gostilna, Pr’ Frfrau, is known for its pig stomach stuffed with chopped pieces of pork and pearl millet.

Liver sausages are common in Slovenia but in Litija they are more popular than elsewhere. The recipe came supposedly from the Czechs who built the railway there. In Šmartno pri Litiji, the Valvasor platter at Gostilna Pri Mačku reminds of Janez Valvasor of Bogenšperk Castle whose writings gave insight into the dietary habits of nobility in the 17th century. Where there is forest, there are mushrooms. No wonder that in forested Dobrepolje, mushroom soup with žganci is a specialty. In Ivančna Gorica, Father Simon Ašič (1906–1992) of the monastery in Stična developed medicinal teas which are now incorporated in a successful brand. In Velike Lašče moderation was the rule, even on festive days. Nonetheless the municipality has its own specialty; Poprtnik Christmas Bread. Specialties of Grosuplje are available anywhere. The Pekarna Grosuplje bakery bakes for the Mercator supermarkets in Slovenia. In Škofljica, the Čot žlinkrofi dumplings of Gostilna Čot are worth a try or the moorland game of gostilna Petkovsek. Ig commemorates the pile dwellers that once live there with a pile dweller’s platter. Cereals, vegetables and carrots are all included. Borovnica is known for its American blueberries and Pekel trout. Each year at the end of July there is Bilberry Day there. The Logatec area’s speciality is the moist and delicious wine štruklji roll. In Vrhnika, štruklji rolls with prune filling are the local delicacy. Tourist farms in the Horjul Valley offer classic Slovenian dishes. Šara stew is popular, it consists of pork, potatoes, turnip, rutabaga, carrots and parsley.

In Log-Dragomer, apple sticks are the local variety of apple strudel. In the many family run gostilnas in Brezovica, veal stew is often a house special. In Dobrova-Polhov Gradec, honey delights can be found in the Božnar House of Honey. The village, Sora pri Medvodah, is home to the annual Carniolan Sausage Festival. No wonder then that the Carnolian sausage is a specialty in Medvode.

Dolenjska, Bela krajina and Kočevsko-Ribniška

Dolenjska, Bela krajina and Kočevsko-Ribniška Experiance yourself!

When travelling through the south you will see endless hills, many of them covered in vineyards, many castles and picturesque villages but also the refreshing rivers where you can find tranquility.

Dolenjska, Bela krajina and Kočevsko-Ribniška

Kočevska

The Land where the energy of the nature can be felt Kočevska represents the most preserved and complete forest habitat in Europe due to its numerous virgin forests and the responsible behaviour of the local community and state.

anyone can create their own story in Kočevska regardless of their interests. So, you are warmly invited to discovering the slightly mystical Kočevska!

It is essential, however, that it offers the most heartfelt experience of nature and contact with various habitats of plants and animals. At the same time visitors will learn about the extremely rich historical and cultural heritage; the most fateful decisions for the defence of the Slovenian nation were taken here in World War II and during the independence process of the Republic of Slovenia. You will find the remains of the villages where only the walls tell the unfortunate story about the Gottscheer Germans and the remains of the castle Fridrihstein that remind us of the unrequited and tragic love of Veronika of Desenice and the Frederick of Celje. The most daring can visit a number of karst caves. Today, visitors can cycle across entire Kočevska region, and it is a welcoming environment for all hikers also. In other words, 78

There are quite a few places in Bela krajina which tourists love to visit. From spring to autumn, and especially in summer the Kolpa River invites visitors. Clean and very warm in summer the Kolpa River was awarded the prestigious title of European Destination of Excellence (EDEN 2010). The most beautiful way of experiencing the river is from the canoe, raft or SUP, from which the visitors discover the untouched nature and a rich cultural heritage, specially protected in the Kolpa Regional Park. During the summer Kolpa is suitable for swimming, as the water’s temperature rises up to 28 degrees Celsius in the lower part of the river. Along the river banks and in other parts of Bela Krajina there are numerous marked hiking and cycling trails which lead across the picturesque cultural landscape from village to village.

Bela krajina, panoramic wiev; Photo: Robert Glazer (Archive RIC BK)

Bela krajina

The Regional Park Lahinja is a smaller park at the heart of the Bela Krajina region. In the park, more precisely in the village of Veliki Nerajac you can visit the information centre, the traditional Bela Krajina house and a handicrafts and art gallery. Not far away, in the village Pusti Gradec you will find a water powered flour-mill, Venetian saw-mill and the All Saints country Church. You can also take a one or two-hour walk along the marked trails in the park. The old town core of Črnomelj is also worth seeing. You are welcome to visit the brand new Municipal museum collection Črnomelj where you can learn about the story of Črnomelj at the permanent exhibition »Črnomelj in the Draught of the Millennia«. Continue your walk to the Pastoral Centre, the Church of the Holy Spirit, and the Primožič House – house of local craftsmen. In the Črnomelj Wine Cellar – Wine Information Centre of Bela Krajina tasting of top local wines will be prepared for groups. From the time of Uskoki we have a typical farmstead in Žuniči, in Vinica the birth house of the Slovenian poet Oton Župančič, which houses his memorial collection, is being renovated at the moment, in Adlešiči locals can still make

Bela krajina’s traditional Easter eggs and weave linen fabric which is later used for tablecloths, napkins, towels, purses or even clothes. Above the Rožanec village the image of Mitra carved into a rock has been preserved, originating from the 2nd century.

Bela Krajina is one of the most interesting wine growing districts in Slovenia. Its mild climate and diversity of soil enable the production of top quality wines labelled PTP (wines with recognized traditional denomination), among which there are Belokranjec PTP and Metliška črnina PTP. Wine tasting is usually accompanied by the typical Bela Krajina flatbread, pogača. End your day by stopping at one of our restaurants and taste the typical Bela krajina dishes.

Posavje

A river runs through it

The region, which takes its name from the Sava, Slovenia’s longest river, is characterised by a wide fertile plain, rounded hills planted with vineyards, extensive forests and several towns and villages containing important cultural sites.

Lodging – Make yourself at home The many options for accommodation allow visitors to enjoy a pleasant stay whether in the city or countryside. For those who prefer the pulse of the city, hotels, guest houses and youth hostels are on offer, while nature lovers and more active types may be more inclined towards our wide selection of countryside accommodation, particularly the authentic holidays offered by vineyard cottages. (www.tvz.si) Krško; Photo: Jošt Gantar

Krško Bu sines s a n d Tourism i n K r ško The municipality of Krško lies in the centre of the Posavje region and is easily accessible from Ljubljana (45 minutes), Maribor (1 hour) and Zagreb (45 minutes). Posavje is a popular tourist destination mostly due to its natural, cultural and historical wealth. Besides the beautiful castles, guests are also captivated by the thermal springs. The region has a rich tradition of food and wine, which is complemented by the events of the countryside and the entertainment of the town. Invest in Krško According to square metres of business buildings intended for business activity, the municipality of Krško is placed at the top in the country. The municipality has at its disposal over 50 ha of unoccupied business zones appropriate for construction for commercial circumstances. The advantage of the business zones in Krško lies in its excellent strategic position as they are located at the main road and rail network to south-eastern Europe. The complete equipment of business surfaces in some zones enables quick construction of

82

facilities since in some parts there is the possibility of instant installation to all infrastructural networks. Some foreign and domestic investors have already started their business activity in the above - mentioned zones. They successfully used domestic skilled workers and orderly land that are at disposal for industrial development. The businesses are mainly engaged with productive and service activities.

Historical and cultural points of interest – The Bounty of our Forefathers Castle Rajhenburg is a monument of national pride, recently having undergone a complete renovation. With the discovery of the earliest Romanesque and Gothic construction elements the significance of the castle in the development of Slovenia’s architecture and society is reinforced. A seal of great importance was left on the castle by the Trappists, who were in possession of the structure as of 1881. The Trappists had a great influence on the cultivation of cereal grains, fruit farming, beekeeping, cattle farming, cheese trade, viticulture and the production of chocolate and liqueurs. It was in keeping with this historical legacy that a hiking trail designated The Trappist Trail was created, which takes us along the Trappist trails in Sremič and Grmada to the Church of St. Mohor and back into the valley before leading up to Castle Rajhenburg. We invite you to visit Castle Rajhenburg with its fascinating permanent display, temporary exhibits and summer events.

The Slovenia Times Summer guide 2015

A world of natural sights including experience in wine and food The variety of the region offers numerous opportunities to visit our natural peculiarities and enjoy an active day in the countryside with hiking, cycling, water sports, jogging in nature, hunting and fishing to relaxing and exploring the mystic forests. New thematic trails are also being developed, namely hiking and viticultural trails.

The countryside is also a treat for gourmets as the rich flavours of traditional cuisine and the wide variety of wine will not fail to impress. House, local and regional specialties made with local ingredients are offered at tourist and excursion farms as well as in restaurants.

Ptuj – Treasure of the Millennia

Photo: Stanko Kozel

Only a brief historical review from the Stone, through the Bronze, and then the Iron Age shows Ptuj is undoubtedly one of the greatest cultural treasure troves in Europe. Throughout history, Ptuj was an important crossroads of routes between the East and the West, through which a famous amber route ran in prehistoric times. Where the amber route crossed the river, a trade, strategic, and economically significant settlement has grown, which played an important historical role both in politics and administration as well as art and culture.

Photo: Stanko Kozel

The Roman Petoviona, first mentioned in written documents about the events of the year 69AD became one of the largest and most important cities in the Roman Provinces. Roman legionnaires brought the cult of Mithras from the East, and thus one of the most important centres of Mithraism in Europe was formed here. Between the 9th and the 16th century, Ptuj developed its typical cityscape in the shape of a triangle, between the mighty Ptuj Castle, Dominican Monastery on the east end of town, and Minorite Monastery on the west end, with the accentuated vertical line of the town tower in the middle. The town became one of the major trading centers of Eastern Europe. The tradition of the annual medieval street fairs is revived every year on St. George’s, Oswald’s, and Katarina’s Day. Besides the rich cultural heritage, Ptuj prides itself on a multitude of immaterial cultural heritage, which is preserved especially in the form of numerous traditional events. Among the most important such cultural events is surely ‘Kurentovanje’, the biggest ethnographic carnival holiday in Europe. Today, the cultural-historical treasury of Slovenia is successfully included in the modern tourism offers. In its streets, one of the oldest Slovenian towns is hiding hundreds of treasures.

96

The Slovenia Times Summer guide 2015

Each and every house of the old city centre has its own story to tell, we just need to listen. The rich stories of the city history can be heard in the Ptuj’s churches and monasteries, Ptuj castle, which greets the visitors from afar, at the town tower and Orfej’s monument, in Mithraeums, in city galleries… The Ptuj city theatre, with its look and its attractive and quality program complements the image and the content of the main part of the old town centre. The treasures are also preserved in one of the most beautiful libraries of Europe, placed in the Little Castle. A great developmental potential is presented in projects of tourist investments. Up to this point, the one-day-offers, as a consequence of a lack of housing capacities, were replaced by stationary guests, as great investments in the building of tourist infrastructure took place (a new hotel in Ptuj Thermal Spa – Grand Hotel Primus, renovated Park, Mitra, and Poetovio Hotels, renovated private lodging houses, youth accommodation). The development of water tourism on Ptuj Lake is important, too, as well as investments in the construction of sports-recreational infrastructure on the biggest artificial lake on Drava River. In the old town centre, the Dominican Monastery is already partly renovated, and now offers a remarkable infrastructure for cultural events,

Podravje and caterers in an original way. In the olden days, the noblemen, the soldiers, and the tradesmen were the ones to enjoy the good food and fine wine, but now is your turn.

congresses, and other quality events with its new congress-cultural center. A special experience is ensured by areas that besides its artistic and historical significance bring about an interesting architectural freshness. Ptuj is the only Slovenian city that connects more than two-millennia-old tradition with the offer of health and well-being. The city, and its vicinity, offer numerous possibilities for spending active, romantic, and leisurely holidays for individuals and the families. The synonym for health and relaxation is Ptuj Thermal Spa, a great opportunity for vacationing and active spending of leisure time. Ptuj Thermal Spa offers a great variety of housing capacities from summer cottages in campsites, bungalows, apartments, to a 4-star hotel Grand Hotel Primus****. The Thermal Park offers its pleasures on 4.200 m2 of water surfaces. In the amphitheater, a daily animation and numerous events unroll, and it is well-taken care of a wide offer of culinary delights. A peaceful, yet active, experience of the beautiful nature awaits you at the golf course, where magnificent views of Ptuj and its castle are offered. Ptuj’s golf course includes 18 holes, and is spread out on over 50 hectares. Due to diversity of the terrain and numerous water obstacles from Studenčnica stream and the two lakes, Ptuj course is one of the topmost among Slovenian golf courses. A wide selection of experience is ensured by the offer of Ptuj Lake as well, where you can choose from a number of adrena-

line sports or you can explore “Ptuj’s seaside” from a tourist boat. There are many courts available for the sports enthusiasts, among which the most numerous are the tennis courts, and orderly cycling, running, and hiking paths. You can take a panoramic balloon flight, or try paragliding or recreational aviation. Actively or leisurely – an unforgettable experience in ensured in the “treasury of well-being”. Since the olden days, Ptuj, with its surroundings, is famous for its superb and diverse culinary and fine wines. The oldest city of Slovenia has had for more than seven centuries a tradition of cultivation and care of fine wines, and Ptuj’s wine cellar stores Slovenia’s oldest wine - Gold Vine, produced in 1917. A thousand-yearold wine culture and tradition of wine cultivation and care in Ptuj is a good reason to taste the fine wines with the modern hint and full fruit taste in the Ptuj wine cellar, treat yourself with wines from renowned winemakers from Slovenia in the wine cellar and wine store Osterberger in Mitra Hotel, try excellent white wines from Haloze winemakers in the Golden Grape wine store, go to a Castle wine cellar of the winemakers from Slovenske Gorice and haloze in Ptuj Catle, or taste the fine wines in the nearby wineries. In the last years, Ptuj wine cellar is one of the most successful Slovenian wine cellars and represents modern-styled distinctive wines with its PULLUS trademark, which are winning top awards in world competitions. The exquisite wine tastes of the area combine well with numerous delights of the town and surrounding taverns, which are prepared and served by the Ptuj chefs

The historic streets of Ptuj are an ideal scenery for different open-air events, as well as for simple city walks. On a stroll down the beautiful city streets and squares, galleries and museums, you can treat yourself to a refreshing beverage or a tasty coffee on the terraces of numerous bars. The young and the young at heart, who are full of energy, can visit a casino of Poetovio Hotel at night, and choose among some bars and nightclubs. The city is renowned for its surprisingly lively cultural and social youth city throb. In the evenings, the pubs of the old town centre on their summer terraces offer live music, thematic evenings of entertainment, recitals, poetry readings… Ptuj, the cultural and historical pearl of a national significance, and the oldest town in Slovenia charms every visitor that comes by, as they are greeted by a charming atmosphere of the old traditions and many new, modern, and challenging ideas, fruits of the developing European city and its citizens. We invite you to the following summer events: Ptuj Castle Games (19. 6. to 21. 6.) Castle Wine Holiday (20. 6.) Run of Partner Cities (27. 6.) Welcome Home (4. 7.) Ptuj Summer Night (31. 7. and 1.8.) Pomurje

Pomurje Traveling to Pomurje is not just cycling and enjoying soothing geothermal springs, but of giving your taste buds a treat and tasting traditional dishes accompanied by house made wines in one of the many inns and wine shops in the region. The authentic cuisine of Prekmurje and Prlekija can be tasted in numerous inns throughout the region, where salads are always served with pumpkin oil. Chefs prepare the dishes from homegrown, local products, and therefore ensure its quality, excellence, and uniqueness of taste. Socializing with locals is an excellent and unique experience, as they are known as a very hospitable people, who gladly rejoice together with the guests. Regional cuisine is flavored with AustroHungarian and Slovenian influences and therefore so different to other Slovenian cuisine. A shining example of intertwining cultures, languages, and cuisine is Lendava, the global capital of Bograč, where at summer’s end each year the Bograč Festival has taken place for many decades. A stroll through the streets of Lendava, between the

historical background of bourgeois houses and at the foot of the picturesque vineyards of Lendava , where the famous dish is prepared in some hundred cauldrons, is a special experience. Heading a little further to the south we encounter another interesting culinary event - Diši po Prekmurju (Smells like Prekmurje). This is a festival of wine and cuisine, where visitors can taste local and traditional dishes. Prekmurska gibanica (Prekmurje layered pastry) and Prekmurska šunka (Prekmurje ham) are two traditional dishes, bringing much pride to the people of Pomurje, and are consequently also appropriately protected. Prekmurska gibanica is a real particularity among desserts and is also one of many Slovenian specialties. This festive and ceremonial dish was named after wrinkles, which are created with

layers of filo pastry and sweet stuffing, and it used to be regarded as a real delicacy. The best known wine route leads through Jeruzalem - a picturesque landscape covered by vineyards, wine cellars, and

wine shops, where one is greeted and invited to a glass of exquisite wine. Its excellent placement, tradition, experience, and the professionalism of its vintners and cellar masters give the locally produced wine a distinctive note. Visitors can enjoy predominately white wines, such as Laški and Renski rizling (Welsch and Rhine Riesling), Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Kerner, and Sivi pinot (Grey Pinot). Each June the vintners of Jeruzalem host the event Salon Jeruzalem, where their wines and cuisine are presented. At the border with Austria, in Gornja Radgona, they hold an Open Cellars Day every year on the last Sunday in June for the cellars of Radgonske gorice, a traditional vintner of sparkling wines

since 1852, when the very first Slovenian champagne was produced. The lifting of ripened sparkling wine from the Mura River, a tour of cellars under a rock, a waterfall, as well as under a Roman wheel, and a treasure trove of archival champagnes are just a small part of the day, where some also go cycling between the vineyards. The Negova Castle is the scene for the event Salon Traminec. More than a hundred vintage Traminer wines from Slovenia and neighboring countries, and top chefs make sure that you remember the event for a long, long time. There are dry as well as medium dry Traminer wines at hand, Traminer sparkling wines, sweet and medium, strawberry, and archival wines.

Come, see, taste and enjoy for yourself!

The municipality has a rich and diverse heritage. Its development opportunities are based primarily on natural heritage (the Mura river with its backwaters and flood forests, the Father of the Pannonian oaks, the stream with 11 mills and old mills), cultural heritage (Church of the Assumption, Baroque mansion in Črnci, sacred signs and ancient Roman ruins) and diverse tourist facilities (Tourist Recreation Center Konjišče, cycling-hiking bridge in Črnci, tourist farms, wine shops and wine taverns). It is situated in the north-eastern Slovenia, on the Apače Field between Šentilj and Gornja Radgona, and between the Mura River in the north and the Slovenske gorice hills in the south. It is a highly agricultural area. There are mostly agriculture and stock-breeding in the plains, whereas at the edges of the valley there are vineyards and fruit orchards.

IDEAL FOR LEISURE, RECREATION AND WELFARE Tourist and Recreational Center Konjišče offers its visitors diverse opportunities: quiet and unspoiled nature invites you to fish, walk along the landscape walking paths, have a picnic in a covered and uncovered area, play beach volleyball, take part in various events and visit the old oak, the father of all oaks. Velika Polana

OBČINA VELIKA POLANA

T h e L a n d o f S to r k s and the Golden P l a c e o f E u ro p e Among the mysterious Mura River, black meadow woods and outlines of the nearby hilly vineyards, lies the Velika Polana municipality, extending throughout the Pannonian plain. Three settlements only: Velika Polana, Mala Polana and Brezovica, with a picturesque mosaic of natural and cultural heritage and friendly people are the reason for you to stop by and DISCOVER more about his region. We have the largest population of storks in Europe and, therefore, the “Euronatur” foundation granted the title “European Village of Storks” to Mala and Velika Polana. The Polanski log forest, the largest complex of black alder wood in Europe, offers shelter to many endangered plant and animal species,

“Storkland” (“Dežela Štorkelj”)

Velika Polana was the birthplace of the famous Slovene writer Miško Kranjec. At his homestead there is a well preserved study and a permanent exhibition of his books, documents, photographs and works of art. The homestead is also the starting point of the hiking trail Miškova pot, which leads to his vineyard cottage in Lendavske gorice hills and also the start of the Slovenian Writers Trail. In Mala Polana, next to the Črnec stream, there is one of the last preserved brook mills in the Pomurje region known as Copek’s mill (Copekov mlin). A great example of historical recollection of residential architecture is also Sabol’s house in Mala Polana. The parish church of Velika Polana is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the starting point of the pilgrimage route named after the priest Daniel Halas.

Miško Kranjec homestead

Štefan Hozjan, imperial-royal pilot, one of the most successful pilots of World War I, was born in Brezovica. Our tourist story is dedicated to all, who seek genuine contact with the natural and cultural heritage, experience the life of our local people and live in their homes during their stay. Biking and hiking trails do not end here, but are a part of the trail network along the Mura River and run through several countries. The true spirit of the place can be felt at many events organized by associations from Velika Polana throughout the year. They are intertwined with cultural, sporting, culinary and other content, and some of them preserve old local customs and tasks.
