Shenanigans: Manipulating the Filipino People’s Attention
The Philippines is the only Asian country that has not yet opened schools for face-to-face classes due to the seemingly endless cases of Covid-19; however, the Philippine government must have shifted its attention to the 2022 Election when the filing of candidacy has started on October 1. The infamous political dynasties, Marcoses from the north and Dutertes from the south of the country have been creating scenes to have their names being plastered all over the media, besmearing the integrity of election yet unconcerned how they smirch the trustworthiness of assertion. The comedy of going on and off the election candidacy has been the drama of the Dutertes, and it was not surprising that President Duterte claims that he is planning to file a Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for vice-president after his daughter, under Lakas – Christian Muslim Democrats (LakasCMD), Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who once denied the wish to run for a national position, has teamed up with Bongbong Marcos who is running for the presidential position under the ruling party of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP). Seeing it coming since the president seems not to know how to

hold on to his words, instead of going on to his plan, he has filed a COC for a senatorial position on November 15, but soon drops it, saying that he plans to retire. However, in addition to that, President Duterte still urges and recommends his favorite senator Bong Go as the standard-bearer for the presidential position after Sen. Bato Dela Rosa drops his bid in the

ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDPLaban); Duterte accompanies Go in submitting his statement of withdrawal for the vice presidency and filing COC for president at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) main office in Intramuros, two days before the deadline for substitution of candidates; two major changes showing gimmickry and manipulation of attention as it successfully causes uproar of different reactions from the Filipino netizens online. Since President Duterte’s presidential bet is Sen. Bong Go, he endorses his daughter Sara DuterteCarpio and Go’s tandem, but DuterteCarpio has already agreed to be a loyal ally with Bongbong Marcos (BBM). Furthermore, President Duterte has said in an interview that BBM is a spoiled-brat and a weak leader, thus, he will not be supporting him. Duterte has also shown great trust with his reliable aide Go, but it is pointless and hilarious when Go officially drops his candidacy on December 14, which becomes the most laughable time in the last moments of 2021. Other than the playbook that Dutertes trifling with the Comelec and the people especially the Filipino voters, the ambitious son of the late president Ferdinand Marcos, Bongbong Marcos has been claiming that the his father’s administration is the “golden age” of the Philippines and denying all of the crimes their family have committed that is supported by their own troll farm in social media. The internet has become a breeding ground for horrifying disinformation, which spreads faster than the Covid-19 virus, primarily on Facebook, which has more than 71.76 million active users. They are shamelessly using social media to reclaim the Malacañang through propaganda pages and groups that share the same disinformation and misinformation about their family; the worst is about other people opposing them, destroying the name, and pulling it down into the depths of an embarrassing pit. Moreover, having said that social media is a powerful tool to spread information and hoaxes, large numbers of people are starting to believe in the lies of the Marcoses, which has become the hottest debate and arguments in the cyber world. Because of this, our country’s attention has been diverted to political dramas on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tiktok and away from the real issue that our country is still dealing with the growing number of Covid19 cases, that by the end of the year, Department of Health has reported 2,961 additional active cases on December 31st alone, >> pg. 39

This has been the words of Melanie Hizon, Editor-inChief of The Soil Tiller, Official Student Publication of Bulacan Agricultural State College during their first online Literary and the Arts Festival via Zoom Application and Facebook Live, October 2021. The webinar-workshop was anchored with the theme, “Punto de Vista | Estudyante: Ang Pagbuwag sa Tabing ng ‘Di Malupig na Pangarap”, and aimed to showcase the importance of literary and arts in exposing the truth, and to mold the writers and artists to their better selves. As Geliza Jaslen Elopre, Literary Editor said, words and literature were powerful as it holds the truth that everyone wanted to
reveal.
Mr. Gerome Nicolas Dela Pena, one of the resource speakers, educated the participants about Poetry Writing (Pagsulat ng Tula), and its deeper purpose. He further explained that the message that the poem conveys is more important than its form, the effectiveness of an article was based on the feedback of a reader, and that a poem aims not just to entertain, but to inform as well. Meanwhile, Mr. Raymond Clark Sala, alumnus of TST served as the resource speaker for flash fiction, and shared his knowledge and experiences on writing where he explained that flash fiction is free, the writer gives the twist in it. Likewise, Mr. Sala
reminded the participants to read as it will help them to widen their knowledge about literary articles and can be a way to drive out stress. Moreover, Ms. Hilary Buenaflor enlightened the journalists and the viewers on the difference of photography from photojournalism, and the different types of photojournalism. She also emphasized that to be a great photojournalist, you have to take risk, yet still be cautious with your surroundings, and that everyday is a process to improve and you have to keep on practicing. Moreso, the last session about Graphic Illustration was discussed by Mr. Kenneth Leo Pamlas, an alumus of The Work, University Publication of Tarlac State University where he explained the foundations of great graphics. He stressed that copying one’s idea and artwork can be considered as plagiarism, so every artist must use other artworks as a
reference only. “ He further gave tips such as not quitting when someone is better than you, but rather use it as an inspiration. The event was conducted for two days; first day for the seminar, and second day for the workshop. BASC radiates Christmas Spirit; starts countdown to 70th anniv ERICKA DELOS SANTOS
Reliving the dimmed glimmer of the institution due to students’ absence these past years, Bulacan Agricultural State College’s Faculty and Employee Association spearheaded this year’s Ceremonial Christmas Tree Lighting held at the front of the Administration building, November 16. The event highlighted the Christmas Tree designed by the student leaders of the institution and marked the launching of 100 days to the 70th BASC Founding Anniversary. Dr. Jameson H. Tan, President of BASC, conveyed his message by raising the significance of BASC’s Christmas tree during these times where hope seems to dwindle. “BASC Christmas tree stands for our hope that we can pull through this unprecedented crisis that cracks the wall of the COVID 19 pandemic,” he added. Moreover, Dr. Tan braced the bond of faculty and student sector of BASC by conducting events like constructing

and lighting BASC’s Christmas tree, which has become a tradition of the institution even before the pandemic. Meanwhile, FSSC imposed the significance of this event by sharing the essence of Christmas to each student of BASC and reminding them that there’s still hope brought by the season. FSSC shared how delighted they were in making the Christmas tree with the use of coconut shells painted with different colors symbolizing the light, love, peace, and unity of Filipinos. The design of this year’s Christmas tree was completed with the incorporation of Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary bodies, together with the Governors of each institute. In addition to the ceremonial lighting, this event ended with the launching of BASC Website through the efforts of the MIS team headed by Dr. Ma. Melanie A. Cruz, the newly appointed MIS Director.
SCIMATECH FAIR 2021: BASC secures third spot in Digital Poster Making Contest ROBIELYN GARCIA
Christian C. Reyes, a BSIT2C student of BASC, with his entry entitled “Crop Protection Android Game” (CPAG) took third place in the Research Digital Poster Making Contest of SciMaTech Fair 2021 with the theme “Future Recreates: Research, Science and Mathematics Role in Technology Creativity and Resiliency of Students in the new normal”, held via Zoom and Facebook Live, December 10.
With the guidance of her adviser, Ma’am Russel Amira Balacania together with other IEAT faculty teachers, Reyes created the CPAG, a mobile learning game tool designed for crop protection. CPAG is a portable handheld learning tool to innovate the process of learning and to engage students to learn while being entertained. CPAG’s objectives are to: first, provide innovative ways of studying different topics in Crop Protection; second, to provide different information about the subject with image visualization and general facts; and third, to provide different modes of quiz
game for the insects, weeds, diseases and crops. According to Reyes, at first, he only focused more on text and less graphics, but because it was in the guidelines to emphasize more on design and visuals, he adjusted everything to fit the concept.

Rising Above Status Quo through Online Campus Journalism”, TST, together with the resource speakers offered meaningful discussion and workshop to the student journalists of BASC for the Journsem 2021 via Zoom Application and Facebook Live, December 9-10. “There will be knowledge, skills enhancing, discussion and workshops that will inspire journalists in creating and writing articles that will enlighten the readers especially in this time of pandemic,” said Former Editorin-Chief Bianca Gail Gonzales in delivering of Mrs. Maria Arjie T. Domingo’s message for the opening remarks. Furthermore, Ms. Tuazon, one of the resource speakers, delivered her knowledge and tips in writing a news story. She further explained that a journalist must write something
that the general audience could understand, considering their age, the consistency when it comes to writing, and the urge to deliver the truth. Ms. Tuazon pointed out, “No matter what, follow your moral compass and righteous indignation as a journalist.” Mr. Mark Angelo Mañez, who also served as the resource speaker of the said event discussed sports writing, and enlightened the participants regarding the differences of sports, and hard news. He noted, “We can do whatever we want, everything we can write as long as it can relate to what really happened in the game itself.” Likewise, reminding the student journalists to be straight to the actions of writing.

GRAPHICS | ERLIE DAWN LATUJA

n art tutor, an entrepreneur, a future English teacher - Marianne E. Enriquez, 19, was born to be an artist. Her biggest inspirations are her aunt and cousins, who are also known to have God-given talent in arts. The 2nd year student from Institute of Education is an achiever at an early age. She started to paint at the age of 15 and discovered her talent in arts by observing her Auntie, an art tutor. Marianne began to use oil pastel in plain bond paper to create her artworks. She then shifted into charcoal using a sketchpad as her medium and used canvas in acrylic painting.
also led her to continue developing her skills in art by practicing. The polaroid paintings she made helped her cope up with the pandemic and improved her skills. The artist graduated With High Honors at San Miguel National High School. She was also the former Contemporary Arts Club President during 20192020. Her achievements include placing 2nd at IEd Pasukan Face Mask decorating contest, 3rd place at The Overcomers Club Poster Making Contest and 3rd place at STEMS Club Infographic Making. At present, she accepts digital art commissions. She also has a business collaboration
with her cousin where they sell customized tote bags and wallets. She uses the income she gains to support her studies. Additionally, she also paints kids’ lives with confidence and courage by tutoring them on how to create artwork. She was afraid at first, but when she saw that her students gained confidence and reflected their personalities through masterpieces they created, she realized that it is okay to feel afraid if you know you are doing something right.
“As an Art Tutor, I am able to teach the kids to be confident, be courageous, be appreciative and see the beauty in everything.” -Marianne
The beauty of the world inspires her to produce masterpieces with her own hands. Poured with passion, she creates artworks at any time of the day. Art helps her express her feelings and she does it when she’s feeling uncontrollably happy or in the midst of sadness. Marianne believes that art can tackle societal issues. If a viewer feels disturbed about the artwork, you are doing the right thing because your art influences people to do something and feel something about that particular issue. This belief
Every pencil shaving that falls into the sketchpad, every unwanted smudge on the canvas, and every mistaken line that ruins the momentum of these artists’ dance; their unrivaled desire to dance to the tune of their lives, inspiring, igniting the fire of pursuing what the soul aspires, and swaying society by the masterpiece born out of their creativity and stories — will always be the highlight of their greatest performance.

He is still the God of us in the midst of the pandemic, grabe kumikilos si Lord sa family ko hindi lang kasi isang beses kami natamaan kundi dalawa. IN JESUS IS OUR HEALING.

Stuck in the Middle Field
DANIEL LUIS P. VERONA

Election 2022 is approaching, and we will once again cast our vote for the candidate we believe will lead us to greater success. A decision that everyone must make. However, some people prefer to stay in the middle despite the fact that there is no guarantee of a destination if they remain neutral. Every individual beholds this right to vote, as Article V Section 1 of 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines, states that “Suffrage may be exercised by all citizens of the Philippines” It is all our privilege to choose our next leaders, and every drop of ink on our fingers is worthless if we remained neutral. Remaining in the center is not an example of wisely exercising this prerogative. Some people may choose to remain neutral because they are afraid that the decision will tip the scales in favor of the opposing side. Attacks are currently taking place on social media platforms, where supporters of aspiring leaders argue in comment sections and posts—a battle between partisans due to differing viewpoints. Aside from that, they may use neutrality to avoid being labeled as one of those supporters who will be blamed if they vote for
the wrong coalition. They refuse to take a stance in order to prevent opposition and to be free of the consequences of their decision. Worse, some people choose to be blind of political issues because they are already contented to what the status of their lives at present. They do not desire any societal change because they believe they do not need to vote because they already have a good life in comparison to those in the marginalized sector. They choose neutrality out of apathy. Indeed, exercising our right to vote is critical, especially in a democratic country like the Philippines because this is the only way we can help our country by selecting the best heir to the presidency and the state. A leader who will surpass us in terms of the state’s success, as well as a leader who will fix the prejudice system. More so, being partisan is not wrong if the candidate’s characteristics and qualities fit your standard. At the end, we have this diverse point of view towards someone or something. On the other hand, once we decide to choose to be partisan, let us be assured that after the election we will accept the consequences of our vote. Being responsible for what we choose

makes us a good citizen. Accept your choice but never be afraid to speak up if you notice something wrong committed. In line with this, we must always remember that supporting is different from patronizing. Individuals classified as neutral play a significant role in the selection of the next leader. If those neutrals take a position, the election results may change dramatically. For example, after analyzing voter turnout or the percentage of registered voters who voted in a particular election; recent elections revealed that voter turnout was 74 percent in 2010, 77 percent in 2013, 81 percent in 2016, and 75 percent in 2019. As we noted, none of these percentages reached 90% or higher, indicating that there were still those who choose not to take a stand, thus, they miss their chance to spark change. There are times in our lives when neutrality is the safest and most appropriate course of action to take, but not during the upcoming election. If you’re yearning for change, take action. Take a step and take a stand to see progress materialized in action.

MORAL DILEMMA: DARK SHADE OF MONEY
PIEVEN JESTER A. GONZALES
FIEV
Managing Editor for Administration BSEd Science 2A jestergonzales26@gmail.com
As the uprising tension between the opposing teams for the upcoming election continues to uncover, political candidates have started their premature campaigns, desperate to earn the people’s trust months before the 2022 election. The candidates are eager to win the race and are willing to go to any length to ensure that they are placed in the highest position in the country, whether it is through disguised endorsements from motorcades and caravans driven by their supporters or by filling every single billboard space with their faces. Regardless of their efforts, people of the country still demand transparency and know the extent of their campaign—if the candidates will conduct illegal acts such as vote-buying only to win the people’s trust, especially the less fortunate voters. The general public became interested in the topic of vote-buying after independent presidential candidate Maria Leonora ‘Leni’ Robredo stated her position on vote-buying on October 26. According to her interview, she is opposed to the idea of bribing candidates in order to obtain votes from the general public.
a person’s vote is equivalent to their dignity, and one’s dignity costs more than a mere P500 that a cheap politician bribes them for a single shade that can dictate their future. In the 2013 Camarines Sur congressional election, she filed a complaint against her opponent for vote-buying. She stated that if given the opportunity, the people should accept the bribe money, but she also encouraged them to vote for their preferred candidate. This statement by Robredo has sparked debates online, despite the fact that this idea is not new and is shared by other presidential aspirants. Some people have supported her statement because she has made the point that the money used for bribery by politicians are taxpayer’s money, while others have opposed the Vice President’s idea because such act is considered
illegal and immoral. The Commission on Elections’ Spokesperson, James B. Jimenez, is among those who spoke out against the Vice President’s statement. A tweet in response to Robredo, he says that the people of the country should not accept money from any candidate, even if they are choosing the right candidate based on their conscience. Candidates, on the other hand, are instructed not to engage in any type of bribery during the campaign season, or they would be chastised and maybe disqualified. Some politicians’ go-to response is to buy votes, and they target individuals who needed the money the most; and the victims are those who suffer from great poverty; they have less understanding about how undesirable the candidate’s actions are, which is why they are the major target when it comes to bribery; those who know less would ask less and will be easily persuaded. The underprivileged people have a much lesser understanding of how the campaign works, the do’s and don’ts are not their prior concern. It is a matter of ‘who will help first’, they will vote those they know they will benefit
from, and these politicians know about this mindset and will take this chance to take advantage of the poor. Vote-buying can be the root cause of bad deeds from the candidates that can spread to the extent of betrayal to the poor’s part, that is why bribery is a forbidden act during a campaign. Vote-buying can cause aspirant a sanction of a grave offense, but regardless of the heightened rules of the COMELEC, it is a common knowledge to the Filipino people that vote-buying is a common, inevitable practice during the campaign period. Even Presidential Aspirant and current Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko’ Damagoso said that Filipinos are not to be blamed for vote-buying. Many Filipino families are still facing poverty. That is why they are tempted by the cash given during campaign without knowing that it is illegal to accept such bribe money. With this, people of the Philippines must be informed about the strict rules during campaign to avoid being tricked by the politicians who tries to buy their trust. Vice President Robredo added in her statement that she does not condone vote-buying >> pg. 39

DULCET TASTE OF SUCCESS: POST-INTERNATIONAL ONLINE TAEKWONDO TOURNAMENT 2021 STORIES DANIEL VERONA
Systems and structures of living alter as pandemic sets foot in. Along with it, the path where dreams to be hailed as champion has changed. All these were abruptly lost. A new face of the athletes’ combat for triumph upturn. Last April 27-29, in the International Online Taekwondo Competition 2021 held by Korea, Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC) selected players from San Miguel Taekwondo Training Center (SMTTC) to represent the country. Unlike earlier tournaments, the Online Taekwondo Tournament featured three key events: Poomsae, Taejuk 1, and Speed Kicking.
Despite the inadequacy of funds, they never lost hope and sought assistance from Mr. Joseph F. Avellanoza, College Sports Coordinator, to allow the BASC Team to participate. Luckily, the team was able to take part in the cup after their granted request. “And we thank Lord kasi granted ‘yung pag-participate ng four members ng BASC Team,” she added. In addition, Olvido stated that while waiting for the request to be granted by BASC, they also started to train the players. Indeed, they did not waste any time though there was no confirmation from

In early January, the taekwondo team pursued their training despite the pandemic when they received an invitation letter from Master Kim Hyo Jun, Korea Taekwondo Association - Philippines, asking them to participate in the aforesaid tournament. Mrs. Leny Grace Olvido, one of the coaches, shared that initially joining that competition is impossible because of the registration fee involved, which the gym cannot afford. the college yet. Allotting time for training and risking their lives manifested how devoted and enthusiastic they are in this sport. Aside from budgetary constraints, our athletes confront another problem: determining how they will conduct video shooting and training while knowing that lockdowns have been set that prevent everyone from leaving. Fortunately, they were able to finish all of the recordings before the authorities imposed the lockdown.
Punch of Change
The pandemic significantly affected our current lifestyles compared to our prepandemic lives. A new way of life emerges, prompting us to become more involved in the online community. Everything we used to do physically is now done virtually through various online channels. However, the new normal is alien to us, making adaptation difficult. According to Angelo Reyes (BSHM-3), one of the delegates, pushing through the virtual international competition was tough because in a face-toface tournament, the physical determination and the skill of a player could have been depicted easily compared to online. This new mode of tournament has brought boundaries to our athletes, but it does not limit Reyes and the team to do their best
considering that they do not only hold their name, rather the whole country. He also shared that during this pandemic, he gained weight so he needed to undergo training again to make his body in good condition before the event. “Kung gusto mo paghirapan mo, maglaan ka ng oras at kapag napagod ka okay lang yan, magpahinga saglit and go,” Reyes said. “Someday makukuha mo rin ‘yang gusto mo dahil pinaghirapan mo.”
Sudden Cramps on Legs
Struggles with the changes continue to challenge the athletes, explicitly living along with the worsened strain of the virus.
THE SOIL TILLER Following the set safety protocols added burden to the delegates in reaching their ideate goals to bring home the bacon. John Patrick Dula (BSHM-4) said that one of the battles they have overcame was bringing off the training and competition, notwithstanding the pandemic restrictions. ’’We even wear masks and practice social distance,’’ Dula added. In the face of trembles, with the guidance of their coaches, the delegates accomplished the training for the online tournament has already made them winners; acclaim them as a living proof of how versatile our players are. According to Dula, some of the notable moments and advice include their coach reminding them of what foods they should avoid, getting enough sleep to condition their bodies, and continually practicing. “Naging advantage naman namin yung online competition kasi nakatutok sa amin yung mga coaches namin and ‘di nila kami pinababayaan, and I am very thankful kasi naitawid namin ng maayos yung online competition,’’ Dula shared. Dula added that he felt both excited and pressured at first because they were not competing for themselves but also for the whole country. This inevitable pressure did not restrain them from giving all the energy for this tournament. This has been Dula’s words towards other aspiring players who dream yet cage with incertitude.
Overcoming the Cramps
Surmounting a new form of competition, they are dynamic players, open to tasting the changes and daring themselves to go through the process before getting on top. With blazing passion and equipped with determination, they can.

TAHIP Mikaella Mercado (BSHM 2) enumerated what they had to concentrate on considering this new set-up for all. According to her, they focus on improving their health through physical exercise and conditioning for Poomsae and speed kicking events. “In speed kicking, we need to kick as many as we can on the allotted time so it needs stamina and also speed. While the poomsae competition consists of various fundamental stances, blocks, punches, and kicks it really needs more focus because it is a memorization process.” Mercado also expressed her gratitude to their hardworking and passionate coaches for pushing them to their limits and BASC for the support and giving them this opportunity. “Hindi ko makakalimutan in joining this competition is yung experience even though hindi nag-travel.” Mercado pointed out. Finally, she stated that this would not be the last competition. This competition have motivated them to put forth more effort in training. Their quest
does not come to an end here.
More than the Recognitions
Partaking in this kind of international competition is a golden opportunity for our athletes. Primarily, winning or receiving recognitions does not matter too much, because in the end, they have gained more than any awards: lessons, chances, and improvements. According to Ashley Pangilinan (BSEd 4), his selfconfidence improved and also he learned not to let any opportunity that may come to pass by. He said. “Kung hindi dahil kay Maam Tham, which is ‘yung coach namin, hindi ako magkakaroon ng chance dahil alam kong kulang ako sa kakayahan.” Pangilinan added that it was satisfying for his part because he never expected such a significant opportunity to arrive. He just came back again after five years of inactivity in taekwondo. He also shared his realizations as a player, that it was not only Kyorugi (combat) that deliver a great opportunity, also Poomsae. In the end, all their struggles are paid back. The sweat, the pain and exhaustion all return into a dulcet taste of success after bagging medals where Ashley Pangilinan and Angelo Reyes bagged Gold Medal, Mikaella Mercado won Silver Medal, and John Patrick Dula, received Bronze Medal. At present, we are all travelling the route into the unknown. We do not even know when this pandemic will end and
where it will bring us. Whether an athlete or not, we must not let change slay us; just like the BASC Taekwondo team, who never got bone-weary to be assiduous to defeat their greatest opponent -changes. Sports gives us the new trends which is the only mode to pursue those unreached dreams to be champion due to pandemics. Evolutions that we may not be afraid to cherish because we do not even know if it will be the only way for sports to escape the pandemic that is currently killing it. Returning to what the athletes, coaches, and paltry school sacrifices invested in making us proud, we must say that they already champion with or without awards. The moment they choose to enter this battle with uncertainty, still fight and set their doubts into motivation to strive for triumph is the greatest thing we must look up to. The new face of an athlete. Dynamic. Passionate. Progressive.

Sports; Philippines against Pandemic This pandemic would be considered as the biggest strike to the sports industry, after all it is still a nuisance to the supposed to be normal flow of the sports world. The battle of overall sports in the Philippines is not over yet, there are still chances that the pandemic will get worse again. Hopefully, the Philippine Government together with the hands of the Philippine Sports Commission is always at check for support in rebuilding and maintaining the value of sports in the country. It is true and undeniable that sports suffered a great loss and are still bearing the downfall brought by the pandemic. Despite national and local events and also numerous private associations that have largely been affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the struggle is visible from them in bringing back the action to the table of the masses. Filipinos are known for their enthusiasm when it comes to sports and their love for its entertainment value is that one
thing nobody could ever deny. The descent of the sports industry is heavily felt by each and everyone who has been living their life with it. A certain type of sport can definitely aid one’s blues and gives off happiness to the people, the portrayal where the value of sports cannot be taken for granted in a way of abrupt elimination from everyday life. At this time, PSC’s support makes sure to take its presence for the rebuilding of a long-run fight against pandemic and its effect on the country’s sports industry. Philippine Realm of Sports: Rebuilding legacy, how this country fights its own battle. The start of Covid-19 pandemic marks the beginning of a tragic hit in the country’s sports industry. March 2020 when the nationwide lockdown has started, the Philippines still has been suffering from the unflatten curve of the pandemic chaos and changed the normal world of sports, almost all types of games are struggling in getting back into action that there are many hindrances shoot and is
forbidding the flow of every game. Blow by blow, 2020 last year, the sports industry has been completely devastated unto its knees; Publications and memorandums from Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of the Emerging Infectious Diseases, IATF asserting the cancellation of all types of sports fly around across the whole country to prevent the waning covid cases. This resulted in the prohibition from conduction of any sports-related events that may cause the worsening of the ballooning-for-bad pandemic. According to a report in the Manila Times, when Luzon was placed under lockdown, the PSC had to redistribute part of its funding for 2020, including half of the national athletes’ and coaches’ anticipated budgets – over PHP1.37 billion – to the country’s war against Covid-19. Philippine Sports Commission is the one that springs life and the one that is supposed to provide leadership, formulates policies, sets priorities and direction for all amateur sports promotion for its development underwent bent down near to its breaching point, and especially the funds made-up for sports industry then was cracked and shifted in assisting covid response of the government. THE SOIL TILLER regulated, the Philippines Sports Commission also swerved from being tumbled. PSC’s resources are also healing at that time and they have managed to relive the essence of their mission in bringing quality sports for everybody. They were able to associate the pandemic issue with the help of the Department of Health (DOH) and Games and Amusement Board (GAB) to perform the biggest move in remediating the damage brought by covid. Stated in JAO 20200001 that physical inactivity affects over 40% of Filipinos, which is a risk factor that contributes to the country’s poor health results. Similarly, many professional sports practitioners around the country where physical exercise has been the sole source of income and livelihood. Physical inactivity has been worsened by movement limitations imposed during the Enhanced Community Quarantine as a result of orders to stay indoors, therefore it is critical to incorporate health-promoting physical activities and sports into people’s non-native routines over the duration of the COVID-l9 response. This 4th quarter of the year, many sports events have already transpired and there are incoming sports occasions that are waiting to begin. From national to the bit of world of sports. Schools who used to incorporate the essence of the industry from the young were the bearers of strength and the seedlings of the country also have their own hurdles to run over. If there are such things the students are missing, sports is definitely one of them. Sports in the Next Day Onwards At the time when the Pandemic struck, face to face education was suspended. Thus, this also causes the almost entire shutdown of competitive and recreational sports at all levels in response to coronavirus. This resulted in multiple postponement of mega-events nationwide and school-based sporting events such as University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), Palarong Pambansa, intersection, Intramurals, sports competitions and other sports-related programs to be set aside for so long.
THE SOIL TILLER The catastrophe of the virus has led the sports sector to the verge of fall. However, in the midst of a global pandemic, hope blooms as the recent Tokyo Olympics 2021 was held. It was likely the initiator of every individual’s heart, especially the student-athletes to crave even more in prolonged sports abeyance as our Philippine Olympians came back victorious. Another page in our history has been created since Hidilyn Diaz clinched gold in the weightlifting category, achieving the Philippines’ first ever gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Together with Nesthy Petecio and Carlos Paalam-- silver medalist in boxing and Eumir Martial who won the bronze medal in boxing and other Philippine Olympians -- they inspire hopeful student-athletes and sports enthusiasts in the country. Their stories of how they start, grow and win could be a strong motivation and inspiration in us and the future generations. Hidilyn and the rest of Team Philippine had also said that we should support sports starting at the grassroots and at the training and development levels. They have shown that sports is not just a help in ensuring the physical and mental well-being of youth, but also brings honor to our country and is needed to pay attention. Presently, the sports sector is constantly healing bit by bit. The stabilizing status of healthcare in our country will help the restoration of sports communities and events nationwide. PBA Philippines Cup is currently on field and this is one of the evidence in regaining the sports sector and until the day comes that it will reach the students, the desire will never fade. We all know that sports play a vital role in the development of youth, not only in physical aspects but in their character-building as well. There is no such particular thing about how or what will be the sports in the future for now. What matters the most is the hope being intact in the mind and heart of all students that sports, sooner or later, will come back. Meanwhile, State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Central Luzon is an annual sports tournament in which 13 State Colleges and Universities (SUCIII) compete. Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC) is one of the schools affected by this pandemic. Student-athletes suffered from the drought of sports in the Philippines. Since last year, the Covid-19 has been wreaking havoc on the sporting industry. However, sports groups at other schools intend to restore the strength of athletics by reviving the SCUAA competition at the most convenient time. According to Sir Joseph Avellanoza, Head of Sports at BASC, the SCUAA Board of Management (SUCIII) met on July 6, 2021, and one of the topics addressed was contacting each president of schools to establish a virtual SCUAA. Chess, Arnis, and Taekwondo (non-combative), Karatedo, and Dance sports are recommended events if the school’s president approves their

proposal. For now, what they have for studentathletes are sports-related webinars. Sports in the heart of the Filipinos will never fade; the harmony of competency and the fun it brings will always prevail. No matter how many times there are barriers that may occur they will always find a way to bring back the natural Filipino personality they are known for, which is a competitive yet funloving people. Yet, Sports is still in the battle at state level, it is fighting and trying to win this long war against the current odds. May everybody come to the finish line together and win this battle for the celebration of great things that yield the authentic and pure excitement people are longing through these times.
pushing the Philippines’ total Covid19 cases to 2,843,979. As of December, the presidential and vice presidential candidates are announcing that their platforms are mostly revolving around how to combat the unstoppable deadly virus infections, poverty and corruption; but ironically, they have already started their caravan, not mentioning the tandem of Bongbong Marcos and Sara DuterteCarpio’s caravan in Quezon City that is attended by many of their supporters and followers, elbow to elbow as if there is no threat of the virus. On top of that, in connection to their platform against corruption, President Duterte, whom the term is about to end and the father of Sara, still has not released his SALN and refused to do so, demonstrates anomalies and hypocrisy on the Dutertes. The fact that the overall picture continues to show an increasing rate of Covid-19 infections in the country, it clearly demonstrates that they are still unable to see the true nature of their problem, which is essentially the monkey business of the government in general. As Filipino citizens, hence, it is of utmost importance to not only know the visions but to know the specific plans of the candidates that we are planning to vote for to see if their plan to lead our country will be concrete and attainable, and to weigh if it will help to solve the still existing problems in our nation that will soon be left by the current administration.

and urged the COMELEC to implement stricter campaigning rules, a much stricter rule that can filter the proper candidate during campaign and accept reports about candidate misconduct before and during campaign period. This reduces the likelihood of establishing a political dynasty that will rule different regions of the country, and if the country continues to struggle, people will be forced to vote for those who they believe would provide for them based on the candidate’s status and net worth. The candidates take the Filipinos’ poverty for granted and use it as an opportunity to appeal to the public by providing for them in various ways. But regardless of the numerous attempts and never-ending bribery during the campaign, a person’s vote is equivalent to their dignity, and one’s dignity costs more than a mere Php 500.00 that a cheap politician bribes them for a single shade that can dictate their future. Buying votes is never right, it is a written rule that any political aspirants should not practice. If politicians want to create a standard that the people of the country they want to lead can follow, they should begin by adhering to the COMELEC’s guidelines in order to appeal to voters and earn their trust.

BASC successfully held an online Arnis and Taekwondo Competition led by the school’s Director for Sports Development, Mr. Joseph F. Avellanoza, last November 26, 2021, via Google Meet and Facebook live. The 250-thousand event was funded by Senator Joel Villanueva last July 2021. The goal is still to relive the essence of sports for the students whilst the pandemic is continuously hitting the everyday life the academe used to dwell before.
Despite the fact that the faculty was not included in the event, Mr. Avellanoza stated in an interview that he added a P25,000 prize fund for each category for those who participated in the activities to encourage and promote participation before it was completed. He further claimed that it was truly intended for the students, particularly at this time of need.

Opening Move: BASCian’s Experiential Gameplay with the First Online Chess Tournament held last November 4 and 5 using lichess.org. On the first day of the tournament, the Sports Developing Office initiated the chess competition with the men’s bracket, which consisted of 13 chess players who clashed for victor. The event occurred on lichess.org with the supervision of Sir Arnel Adriano, Assistant Sports Director and Sir Jose Kasan, Chess Coach. Swiss System was used in the tournament, and each player had five games to play using the 25+0 Rapid time. After the full rotation of the tournament, three dominating players were qualified for the top places, Mark Joshua U. Santos (BSA Crop Science 4A) and Darlon D.C Verde (BSAM-3C) gathered 4.5 points, while John
Lorence P. Cuadra (BSAM 1B) collected three points. Mark Joshua and Darlon, who received the same points, faced each other on a tie-breaker 5+0 blitz to settle the tournament. Mark Joshua swiftly checkmated Darlon with the g2 queen and c2 rook combination on the first game, leaving Darlon’s king on h1 cornered. Mark Joshua ceaselessly ruled the second game, provoking Darlon to raise his hands. Mark Joshua’s positioning and development have driven Darlon up the wall. Due to the pressure from Mark Joshua, Darlon blundered and was forced to push the resign button. Mark Joshua faced problems before the tournament, he said, “Bigla pong nagloko ‘yung lichess app ko.
Nevertheless, Mark Joshua proved himself as first champion in Online Chess Tournament at BASC. On the second day, the SDO started the chess tournament for the women’s bracket consisting of seven contenders, the Swiss System, and 25+0 Rapid time. Each player had four games to play. Lara Mae Victoria Cruz (BSGE 1B) lead the tournament with four points, while Mary Jane O. Fajardo (BSBA-2B) and Kathlyn Ann Parungao (BSBA4-C) ended with three points. Zippy attacks from Lara Mae become her key to intimidate her opponents. She admitted that she did not have a long preparation for the tournament.
“Last week ko lang po nalaman na may tournament, so more or less than a week lang ang naging preparation ko. Nagpapractice games po ako with computer, solving puzzles, and a day before po ng tournament ay nakipaglaro ako sa cousin ko na naging hobby rin ang pagchechess. ‘Yun po ang parang naging warm-up game ko since ang tagal na po no’ng last na sali ko sa competition,” she said. With minor stumbling blocks, players shared their thoughts about the first online event. Mark Joshua Santos of BSA Crop Science 4A said that face-to-face tournaments were much more advantageous rather than playing online because of numerous complications that a player might encounter before or during the game. In the end, the BASC-SDO’s first online chess tournament ended successfully.
