SOS BAND Between 1977 and 1980, had anything been released before the debut album on Tabu and how did you become the SOS, and can you clarify why it stands for Sound Of Success?

No between then we just played in the Regal Rooms Fridays and Saturdays. We became so tight that we got hired for seven nights with two matinees. We managed to fill the club constantly playing the top ten hit songs of the time. Our saxophone player Billy Ellis knew Bunny Ransom who became our manager. After listening to us she suggested we put our music down on tape which she then sent to Clarence Avant, CEO of Tabu Records. Clarence, who was looking for an act, listened, liked it, signed us up and introduced us to Sigidi, a songwriter who wrote Take Your Time.

Sigidi suggested the band’s name was too long and came up with SOS and we all liked it. This was a joint decision, as we toyed with Satisfaction On Stage and Sounds of The South but it originally stands for Sound Of Success. If you listen to the title track of the first SOS album it states it.

I remember the first time I heard Just Be Good, it was so infectious I just played it over and over.

What went through your mind as you approached the idea of singing it? Were you

drawing on personal experience?

My thoughts at the time was everybody in the world wants whoever to be good to them. It just stuck with me “just be good to me, I don’t care about them other girls” as long as you’re good to me …then I’m cool. Definitely I was drawing on experience, I don’t know about other singers but for myself, if I can’t relate to that song then I can’t sing it. I have to put myself in that predicament, like an actor playing a role, if they can’t feel it then the audience can’t feel it either.

In the mid 80’s, like another 80’s super group Maze, you endured packed audiences at the UK’s home of Soul, Hammersmith Odeon. What memories do you have of coming out on stage performing classics like No One’s Gonna Love You, Just The Way You Like It, Weekend Girl and The Finest and being embraced by the UK audience?

The first time in the UK when we hit the stage I didn’t have to work hard that night at all. Everybody was standing and knew and sang every lyric. We had a grand and wonderful time. We got that same reception too in Japan, everybody sang the words. After the concert we had a meet and greet with the fans, but we needed an interpreter to communicate with them.

The songs Just Be Good To Me, Just The Way You Like It and No One’s Gonna Love You all lyrically portray the woman declaring total commitment or adulation to the man, even though he clearly has other lovers that they compete with. Was this reflecting the climate at the time?

Not really the climate, but I could relate to it. As a child growing up my Dad wasn’t around as much as I assumed he would be and I’d ask my Mom where’s Daddy? She’d assure me that he was out working to put a roof over our head and food on the table, so not to worry he’ll be home soon. Those lyrics brought back those type of memories.

How much excitement and anticipation is there amongst the band to perform at the Indigo2 in March 2010 and what can we starving fans expect on the night - loads of old and a few bits of new?

Our new material is not yet complete but we gonna do all the old songs, Just the Way You Like It, Just Be Good to Me, No One’s Gonna Love You, Take Your Time and all the other hits.

You’ve also enlightened me to songs that are familiar to you, as in the USA we have a repertoire of what we do. If we don’t do Take Your Time at a concert people get very upset. So I’m glad you told me about Groovin, as over here a lot of them are not familiar with that song.

Spring Salsa Fiesta Afro Cuban Pati has been running for the past 6 years, our passion is for organising Cuban Salsa events mixed in with other dance styles.

Our next big event is the Spring Salsa Fiesta (Salsa con Soul) from 9th to 12th of April. It’s a salsa weekender but will include a strong element of Soul, R&B, Jazz & Funk.

Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass (March 1950 – January 2010) The meaning of James Brown saying “give the drummer some” is evident moreso in 2010, as the last member of an elite 7o’s instrumentalist to vocalist trilogy, joins his brothers Marvin Gaye and Barry White for the grand finale that Heaven Only Knows. Like most African American artists Theodore “Teddy” Pendergrass’ roots derived from the gospel church, and like the aforementioned, started as a backing session drummer with the Cadillacs. He later became the face of Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes and was fondly addressed as “Teddy Bear” by his adulating female entourage.

He caused a sensation of mass hysteria with panties being thrown on stage as he bellowed his sometimes frightening, powerful, gravelled and gruff yet zephyr soothing and smooth voice. Mean, moody and magnificent and with some humility, he knew exactly how to work his larynx in unison with his diaphragm to belt out those memorable TSOP classics we all know and treasure dearly.

When he sung ballads like If You Don’t Know Me By Now he’d melt hearts like it was global warming.

On disco boogie bullets like Don’t Leave Me This Way with his accentuated ad libs, Teddy’s voice would run like a maverick express train, riding that emphatic Philly groove. More importantly, he epitomised the message in the music ethos when he confronted the various social conscious issues, as heard eloquently on Now Is The Time To Do It and the majestic Bad Luck.

Providentially or ironically the morning after he passed, unknown to me, I was watching the news footage of the Haiti disaster and the record that struck a cord and inadvertently rang alarm bells, was the penultimate Wake Up Everybody. Two hours later I’m fighting back the tears on receiving the news of his death, so as you can imagine that record means more to me now than ever.

After a successful Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes period, in 1977 Teddy commanded a solo career for over 30 years, even though from 1982 most were from his wheelchair, after damaging his spinal chord in a horrific road accident. Teddy later founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance which helps people with spinal chord injuries. Although his This One’s For You and Heaven Only Knows albums were recorded before and released after his accident, Teddy’s voice retained it’s resonance as he later sang Joy and the 12inch Phatt Philli mix of the unbelievable Believe in Love.

His songs have been covered by Jean Carne, Simply Red and the Communards and he collaborated with a few leading ladies, including Stephanie Mills, (Two Hearts) Sharon Paige, (You Know How To Make Me) and Whitney Houston (Hold Me). His songs Close The Door, Love TKO and You Know How To Make Me were a few that were heavily sampled in Hip Hop by Big Daddy Kane, Ahmed and Two Kings and A Cipher.

Amongst his achievements are countless UK and USA chart entries, appearing at the Philadelphia Live Aid concert and multi Grammy nominations. We’ll always remember flinging foot to The More I Get The More I Want, smooching to Turn Off The Lights and crumbling to his delivery of You’re My Latest, Greatest Inspiration. But lest we forget a more recent impassioned song of which he did two versions, one with close friend Melba Moore and his own rendition of another conscious climatic awakener My People.

At his height before his accident his nearest rival would have to have been Luther Vandross and it’s a close call as to who would be victorious in the voting poles. But Teddy for me had the edge in how he interpreted a song with gruffness, a quiver or silver tongued slither and, trust me, I loved Luther.

One of Teddy’s everlasting legacies will be his influence on male vocals over the last 35 plus years.

Many of today’s contemporary artists, whether they realise it or not, emulate his warm richness and sensuality from, Boys to Men, Intro, Jodeci, Jahiem, Blackstreet and beyond. Even in our interview with Freddie Lee, recorded a month prior to Teddy P’s passing, he cites him as one of his major influences.

Whatever your favourite song is of Teddy’s, his music is the soundtrack to so many of our lives, but if you get a moment listen to his 1982 album titled This One’s For You as his fans you will appreciate it.

Thanks to Gamble and Huff for nurturing him and to Teddy for the music, as you will be severely missed and most definitely are too good to be forgotten.

Woody Cunningham (July 1948 – January 2010) Woody Cunningham was the drumming element of the nuclear quartet that went through a few name changes before we embraced them as the funk generals known as Kleeer.

Around 1972 Woody, Norman Durham and Richard Lee were the backing band for Atlantic’s vocal group Choice Four. The trio enlisted Paul Crutchfield once they moved to New York and worked as the Jam Band with Disco Tex. Apparently Jocelyn Brown introduced Woody to Luther Vandross and he became the first live drummer in Luther’s band. The Jam Band around 1975 became a Rock outfit Pipeline signed to Columbia and released a single Gypsy Rider.

As part of Patrick Adam’s and Greg Carmichael’s adapted disco project, The Universal Robot Band, in 1977 Woody and Norman played and stencilled their future signatures on the Dance and Shake Your Tambourine album, with Woody co-writing You’re My Music. The final chameleon change came around 1978 with the addition of Isabelle Coles, Yvette Flowers and Melanie Moore. As Kleeer, Woody’s line up signed to Atlantic and released their mammoth debut I Love To Dance album.

Woody co produced that album that released the definitive bullet Keep Your Body Working. As a limited edition clear 12 inch vinyl it has one of the most superlative instrumentals on the planet. I so remember dancing to that in my school days in the late 70’s. On that album Woody’s song writing is also exemplified on Tonight’s The Night, a personal favourite, Happy Me and I Love To Dance.

The Winners album introduced us to Woody’s underestimated vocal presence on Winners, Close To You and the mesmerising Open Your Mind. The combination of Woody’s drum and Norman’s bass now defined the Kleeer sound. Woody co-wrote Licence to Dream as well as collaborating on the album cover concept. Get Tough was incidentally inspired and dedicated to the hostages in Iran with a cheeky John Wayne one liner intact.

In 1982 the Taste The Music album contained Wall To Wall and the silent but deadly assassin killer I Shall Get Over. Every now and again Woody and Kleeer would revisit their rock influence with the song saga of De Kleeer Ting over a few albums, and eventually like most moved with music technology, by 1984 with the electro instruments.

Woody definitely came into his own on the Intimate Connection album which was one of their most underrated and best. Woody’s voice had now matured with soft varied octaves smothering over the big anthem Intimate Connection, You Did It Again and Go For It. Co-producing Woody’s imprint is also hallmarked on the funk bomb Break, Next Time Its’ For Real and the much sampled Tonight.

On the last lucky 7 Atlantic album Seekret we hear Woody singing lead on Take Your Heart Away and the System influenced Never Cry Again. Woody’s music has been sampled by DJ Quik, Tupac and Jay Z. Although I never got the chance to interview him, I’m feel privileged that both of our tracks are on the latest Soul Unsigned Best Undiscovered R & B Soul compilation, distributed and released in the Far East.

Woody’s track is called Never Say Never and he also released a 12 on Old English with an adapted version of Intimate Connection and Oohh with You in 1995.

Being part of a phenomenal and legendary funktastic group, Woody’s presence was felt more in the landscape of Kleeer, with his amazing foresight, production and songwriting ability.

His importance is recognised by all who love the Kleeer Ting!! Thanks to the creator who Open Your Mind Woody, so we could Get Tough on the dance floor listening to classics like Keep Your Body Working as we Taste The Music to keep that Intimate Connection with you sir.

We are pleased to announce as from the beginning of January 2010 - SIMPLY SOUL MAIL ORDER has a brand new website - you can find us still at the same web address www.firstexperiencerecords.com (launched initially for the record label FER, but later used in tamdom with the mail order business, hence we've kept it at the same domain address, having built up profile at this address over a number of years) But I think we now have an exciting fresh site, that brings us firmly into 2010 - with detailed track listings of all items, soundbites and scans for each release. With a much more user friendly design and layout.

There's a player incorporated into the site, so no need to redirect off to another medium to listen !!

So that was that then...

2009 was never gonna fade away quietly. The year closed with some sublime examples of music from all the genres we know and love.

Out of Rome and representing the Nu-Jazz corner were Papik and their album ‘Rhythm of Life’ on Irma Records. Manhattan based Junior White continued his rise to greatness with the Disco-House floorfiller ‘Wake Up’ and the UK’s Featurecast released yet another slice of outrageous Breakbeat fun with the punchy-titled ‘Whoah!’ on Good Groove. Schema Records offered a late contender for album of the year with Alessandro Magnanini’s ‘Someway Still I Do’. Alessandro was one of the geniuses behind Mario Biondi’s ‘A Handful of Soul’ so the quality is pretty much guaranteed. Speaking of Mario Biondi, his follow up album ’If ’ will hopefully be available by now and has a very different feel to its predecessor. As well as including some cover versions of Jazz standards MB revisits his soulful beginnings on the first single ‘Be Lonely’ and the glorious ‘Serenity’.

Twenty-Ten...

It has a ring about it and I’ve a feeling it’s gonna be a very good one.

2010 arrived with news of a 2nd album from The Bahama Soul Club. ‘Bossa Bop & Afro Shigida’ is still being completed as I write this (Bella Wagner is still adding vocals & a couple of stellar names will be adding some remixes) but it’s already shaping up to be a classic Oliver Belz creation!

Jalapeno Records have caused a dangerous amount of excitement for me with the announcement that both Kraak & Smaak and Smoove + Turrell have brand new albums lined up for release this year. Add to that the 3rd outing for The Jazzinvaders on Social Beats and I may well have to have a lie down!

Have I mentioned the album?

By the time you read this my debut compilation will be on the shelves of your favourite record shop. Released on Soul Unsigned Records, the CD features 14 tried and tested gems from the Solar Radio show and in true ‘Jump Start’ fashion it journeys from Nu-Jazz to Soul and House to Breakbeat. I’m sure readers won’t mind me saying how proud I am to have gathered artists such as Monday Michiru, Ralf GUM, The Jazzinvaders, Brenda Boykin, Smoove + Turrell and many more onto one tidy collection. Fitzroy talks to Teddy Riley & Chauncey Black of:

At what point did Eddie become Teddy, as you were born as Edward Theodore Riley?

I’ve been Eddie and Edward through school but only to Michael Jackson I’ve been known as Theodore and to everyone else I’m Teddy.

How was growing up in Harlem in one of the world’s most fundamental epicentres of organic black music?

It was a great experience to get me where I am today. I’ve been through a whole lot and had to wear different hats which have given me a different perspective on what I have done, and continue to do so in the music industry today.

I heard a rumour that you learned your craft of playing keyboards from the soul survivor Leroy Burgess and your production and writing education from Kool & The Gang’s Royal Bayaan?

Royal Baayan is one of those who taught me the fundamentals of recording music and being a producer. I grew up watching Leroy Burgess when he was Black Ivory and growing up in Harlem but I never got the chance to work with him, he was my mentor from afar. I’ve always admired Leroy’s talent and his voice, and musically he reminds me of Earl “The Goat” Manigault of Harlem. The Goat was one of the greatest basketball players who was underrated. A lot of people knew he was the best but never gave him the props like he deserved.

blac How young were you when your skills were being counselled for acts like Doug E Fresh, Kool Mo Dee and Classical 2 before being signed by Jive, having pioneered your sound and recognised later

by Uptown Records with Guy? I was 17 and in high school with Doug E Fresh and we worked on "The Show”. At the same time my uncle owned a roller skating rink where I had my own studio working with Kool Mo Dee and Classical 2. I’d previously gone into the studio with Royal Baayan and Kool & The Gang and hung with a lot of the traditional artists like Mtume Kashif from the age of 14.

Briefly, what was the magic and balance of Guy that gave us “Teddy’s Jam”, “Her”, “I Wanna Get With You”, “I Like “and “Groove Me”?

Basically the balance was me and I didn’t let anyone get in my way. I did what I wanted to do and what I believed in.

Chauncey interjects, “He created the New Jack Swing sound for that era when Guy came out”.

Teddy, “Yeah and it was just a case of adding a good vocal to the sound which was Aaron Hall as more of a plus, like Keith Sweat, Johnny Kemp and all the others that I worked with”.

How would you define the New Jack Swing sound and how exciting was it to be part of a movement that involved Baby Face Bobby Brown, Heavy D,

ckstreet as you were involved in practically every aspect, be it musician, singer songwriter or producer?

I’d describe it as a very sophisticated R&B sound that created a movement that’s called New Jack Swing. It’s very heavy and at it’s peak it can go from the simplest thing to the most creative and complicated sound movement. It was always a genre that didn’t have any face, its style lent to adding classical, jazz and with "No Diggity" we added the blues What was it like to work with the disco messiah Patrick Adams who engineered Keith Sweat’s album?

He’s one of my teachers, he’s an incredible producer/mixer, a lot of my techniques and skills as a mixer come from watching him mix most of his stuff at Power Play studios. I got to meet him and he didn’t allow a lot people in his space when he’s mixing, but he saw something that a lot of people didn’t see in me. To be honest I was just as weird as he was!

I hear that. I admire him also as he was quiet spontaneous, inspirational and….. quite unusually melodic in his achievements. Between Guy and your next group Blackstreet you were like Leroy Burgess, involved in various projects working with Wreck N Effect, SWV Right Here, Tammy Lucas and the late Michael Jackson on his Dangerous album. Can you explain the euphoria of working

with Michael and how “Joy”, which you co wrote with MJ, became part of Blackstreet’s debut album?

Working with Michael was a great experience, an education and totally different from working with Blackstreet or Guy. Previously I’d worked in a more traditional way as opposed to working the right way, and it starts from the PPP….the pen, the paper and ….the piano. “Joy” became part of Blackstreet's album, having worked with Michael Jackson, and although he loved it so much, he wasn’t in love with it. His take on it was talking about someone who he was in love with and we took the song and made it from a whole different perspective. When we did the video, Michael watched it and said he wished he’d now done that song. At that time he didn’t have a daughter and the song’s concept was about our daughters and our mothers, not our women.

No problem. Thank you and I’ll see you in the UK. Chauncey - how did you become involved in Blackstreet’s evolution and what were you doing whilst Teddy was assembling his career?

I was in church singing and trying to find a way into the music business and met Teddy through Damien Hall and Guy. They heard of me via a producer Tom Telo Farrel from Patterson New Jersey where I’m from. Damien heard some of my demos

and they were looking for background singers for Guy and Bobby Brown. So aged 17/18 I started singing with all Teddy's acts, and did some writing with New Kids On The Block. I basically paid my dues singing in the studio and travelling the world and learning the industry.

When Guy broke up in the early 90’s Teddy pulled me aside, having noticed that I had demoed Bobby Brown’s tracks before he recorded them. He suggested we start a group and I asked if he was going to be in it and was delighted when he said yes. It was a dream come true; Teddy took my nickname Black and combined it with part of another background singer Joseph Stonestreet’s name, and made Blackstreet. I got Levi Little from my hometown who had worked with Tom Telo Farrel and that was the first line up. We had some creative issues with Joseph Stonestreet who sang Baby Be Mine on the CB4 soundtrack, so we let him go and Teddy recruited David Hollister who’d sung with Mary J Blige on her tour.

You co-wrote a good portion of your 1994 debut album on Interscope, a label more famed for signing hip hop acts like Dr Dre, Snoop Dog and Lady Of Rage. You, Teddy and the other members managed to interpolate and transcend the influences of old school predecessors, including The Gap Band, TS Monk, Isaac Hayes, Kool & The Gang, Zapp, George Clinton and Earth, Wind and Fire. Djing back then, I remember how readily your album was embraced. How important was it to get this right?

Teddy’s style of music was to make a song sound familiar for the listeners to identify with the music like “Don’t Leave Me” using D’Barge’s A Dream.

Any musician who loved real music would understand where that came from but the new generation don’t know the realness of that R&B era. We wanted our records to sound as classic as the records that influenced our titles, like “Before I Let You Go",and "Lets Stay In Love ". Every time I speak about this it gives me goose bumps because it’s what’s missing now and people still embrace Blackstreet because it never sounds old.

The second album Another Level featuring “No Diggity” and “Fix” introduce us to some more retro influences from the Staple Singers, Bill Withers D’Barge, The Floaters, Grandmaster Flash and Zapp…

Chauncey interjects “Let me tell you how much our influence was on everybody, did you notice Puffy released a song with Mase with the same sample?

He beat us to the punch when he listened to our album as did Tupac who put out “I Ain’t Mad At Ya" having heard “Don’t Leave Me" and used D’Barge”.

How crazy is the media and female fans entourage following?

Oh my God I haven’t been to London since 95 with Blackstreet and I remember being on the front cover of every magazine as I sing the majority of

the songs on every album and haven’t been replaced. Man I love London. I’m looking forward to it - I think it’s gonna get out of control!

Well you got 15 years worth of adulation to come from some hungry fans (Chauncey chuckles at the thought) and that love is coming from beyond the UK via Africa; it’s that deep!!

Having done some collaborations with Janet Jackson and Flipmode squad and releasing an album, what else has Chauncey been up?

I’ve been trying to maintain Blackstreet’s business side since Teddy and I got back together. We have a card game called Ka Ching which will be in the stores soon and we gotta keep that mainstream income going too, as well as giving the people what they want. We’re going into the studio to make fresh music.

What’s forthcoming from Blackstreet to coincide with this world tour, put together by your hardest working manager Helen Williams from Elite Management. She’s been like a dog with a bone, hitting everyone up on Facebook pulling this gig together?

Ah man Helen Williams is amazing; we want everyone to know she’s our official agent handling all our bookings worldwide. She gives 200% and as you know today’s her birthday and she’s working overtime, so that shows commitment to me and Teddy. Now there’s a few other outfits claiming to be Blackstreet and Helen’s out there busting them.

Teddy and I own the name and she’s repping the real deal and helping us to come back the right way.

We had a triple whammy recently losing Al Green’s producer and musician Willie Mitchell, Woody Cunningham of Kleeer and last night Teddy Pendergrass passed. Teddy’s vocal style is evident in so much of today’s contemporary soul music spanning the last 35 plus years. You can hear it in Boys 2 Men, Silk, Jodeci, Intro and all the current male vocal harmony groups’. How influential and how much of a loss were these greats?

Wow!! I didn’t know about Woody and Willie Mitchell. It saddens my heart to hear that, we gonna miss them as they were a big part of everything. It started around them and I send my condolences to their family members. It’s just crazy.

On a happier note, what’s going to happen at the Indigo2?

It’s gonna be an....EXPLOSION! You gonna hear all our hits and Teddy’s not holding back any bars, it’s gonna be such a ruckus, they have to build another arena after. We’re trying to do 2 shows and we gonna be out meeting and greeting the fans.

What intrigues me about the 23 year old Dubliner, Ruth-Anne Cunningham, who’s an amazing songwriter with a God-given powerhouse voice to match her good looks is the fact that even though with her modest success behind the scenes; she’s co-written hit songs for Jo Jo, Leona Lewis, two tracks for Pixie Lott’s debut album and others, in addition to having her own national hit in her home country, but she has yet to be signed.

Everything is subject to change so we’ll see what the future holds for her. In the meantime get a hold of her track ‘Set Free’ produced by FiveSix Media’s darling King Britt who along with another track they put together will feature Ruth-Anne on his forthcoming SYLK130 album due autumn 2010. The Philly native has taken her out of a pop frame to appropriately dress this song in a heavy double bass line, while added harp strings and a hip hop loop overlay entwine her melodies, the result of which is a solid mid tempo neo soul jam you’ll be enjoying for years to come.

Marcia Carr Silhouette Brown birthed as a songwriting and production team; Kaidi Tatham (Bugz In The Attic), 4Hero’s Dego and Bembe Segue - themselves artists in their own right, were there at the start in 2005. Some five years later, their long overdue follow up, again on 2000 Black Records, basically called ‘Two’ is highly anticipated. This time round Philidelphia’s artist Lady Alma is at the helm of vocal duties, while Dego and the nimble fingered Kaidi dish up their melodic grooves of “London Boogie and 31st funk”. As a digital EP release this is a mere taster of what to expect, with a wide range of subjects covered that we are likely to have experienced (or know someone who has). 2 Banks Of Four man Demus strips back the ‘Constant Questions’ original version of pulsating rhythm and synths and clothes it with a sombre bass line, while the rhythm drives forward shaped by the fine drumming and electronica sounds. A tight set of Moog keys and hip hop style drum licks probably do a good thing in distracting you away from the subject of suicide on short and snappy ‘Leave A Note’. Be sure to Wish List this project - you need this. Marcia Carr Sade - Soldier Of Love (Sony Music) Sade’s back, and reassuringly Ms Adu’s Sony stylist has her hair tied back so tight that she’s rocking a Croydon facelift on the artwork, just like she used to in the 80’s. So hopefully it’s a return to form, and though the album starts brilliantly with the string drenched “The Moon & The Sky” segueing into the 1st single “Soldier Of Love” (reminiscent of their ’92 hit “No Ordinary Love”) then followed by the baroque soundscape of “Morning Bird”, from track 4, the reggae tinged “Babyfather” it all starts to sound too commercial, like they have chart places in mind. Things improve on the Norah Jones styled “Be That Easy” & classic Sade ballad “The Safest Place”. But was this album worth waiting 10 years for?

The hype on this new single from the duo Blak & Spanish, known also as Afronaut and Phlash, has been causing quite a stir at underground parties all over the place. Having released around five singles together since their first outing back in ’95, this sparks a welcome return to their more unrefined dance sound interpretation of house. Finally, ‘No Compromise’ is here on Phil Asher’s Restless Soul imprint. It purports a strong message both of current and political affairs running over some grimy, raw beats, hordes of swanky percussion that mirrors the rhythm of the drums and some old school techno synths. If you dig Detroit tech house, spoken word, electronica and dancing, this should be in your collection - go buy! Marcia Carr Alessandro Magnanini - Someday Still I do - Edizhino Ishtar Rewind back to my late 60’s/mid 70’s youth, I’d often hear on an epic cinematic/Sunday afternoon TV film, or coming out of a tinny supermarket tannoy Grace Brother’s style department store, music what I’d refer to as cocktail jazz. Fast forward 40 years, Alessandro Magnanini guitarist, producer and composer of Mario Biondi’s This Is What You Are, drives this chilled lounge sound, like it’s a revamped 2010 classic Ford Cortina.

Reincarnations of Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett, Astro Gilberto influences can be heard on Secret Lover, But Not For You Lover and L'Estate E'Qua. Like Quincy or Henry Mancini conducting a lush big band, playing Latin samba and bossa nova rhythms, it’s produced with crystal quality orchestration. Jenny B, Liam McKahey, Rosalia De Silva and Stephania Rava vocals truly are exceptional, especially Renata Tosi on ultimate jazz tapper Stay Into My Life. Gracias Italia this is a spellbinding album. As a teenager, to whom did you aspire to follow your vocation as the ultimate performer, dancing singing, the whole package?

Oh man there’s so many, my Mother used to listen to Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack and James Ingram. We used to watch the Jackson 5 TV show, all us kids wanted to be like Michael Jackson. I’ll never forget my Aunty loved Teddy Pendergrass and remember her standing there crying at a local concert calling out his name “Oh Teddy, Teddy Bear” and I thought if a guy can make a woman do all that I wanna do this (Freddie laughs). There were several different characters who influenced me and those are just a few of them.

How much, in spite of your natural gift that you learned and acknowledged comes from God, and did your University education help you focus towards a music career?

Freddie Lee How much of a turbulent struggle were your early years in Pahokee Florida with an absent biological Father and seeing a dedicated Mother support five siblings with the aid of your Grandmother?

It was quite difficult being in a one parent family situation with a Mother working at least two jobs. We couldn’t get a lot of things we wanted as there were five of us. On occasion we’d feel not wanted or loved without a father figure around to speak with us about a situation. It also led me later to get involved and hang out with the wrong people.

As a teenager you got caught up in some bad influences, some of which were young pre-graduation kids who died as a result of living the street life. Though singing became your escapism, at what age did you realise you had a voice?

I realised I could sing at eight years old as one of my cousins heard me singing whilst I was in the toilet with the door closed and by the time I came out my whole family was standing there shouting and screaming. I never really took it seriously till I got into trouble when my Grandmother sat me down and said I can’t do things like that, being in the church too, and it wasn’t cool running the street. She said if I continued in that direction I’d lose my life, which woke me up to the reality and I focused on singing mostly in the church choir. I also had a friend who died just before graduation.

A lot. Although I was a gifted singer, I didn’t understand music terms like sharp and pitch until I went to university. I got vocal training; I learnt how to work the stage and how to deal with different audiences. Prior to that I just sang and had no personality to entertain.

Working with Dr Roosevelt Williams taught me many different techniques and styles when working with others, so it was very helpful.

How did you find yourself working in Europe and eventually declining an offer from the representatives of the ultimate dream opportunity of TSOP producers Gamble & Huff?

I was young and over in Madrid at the time doing a tribute show to the Temptations called the New Temptations. I had put together a promotional package with a cassette of a couple of original tunes, and one of the Gamble & Huff representatives flew over from Philadelphia, having received the demo as he liked what myself and the Aces were doing. Some of the group didn’t take him seriously but he pulled me to the side and told me he knew I’d put the package together and wanted to work with me.

I was so grateful to be working with the group and through loyalty I declined. I based my decision on when we first had the opportunity to come overseas the people bringing us over thought I looked too young to travel. The guys said if Freddie’s not coming neither are we, so in turn I did the same with TSOP’s rep.

In hindsight, considering who Gamble and Huff were, is this something you regret?

Yes I do and I talk and think about it sometimes, I was young and missed a great opportunity.

Another visit to the school of hard knocks came in 2002 when you came to London from Spain with your group Aces and discovered a close friend and colleague mishandled a sum of £175,000 from the accounts.

Med Soul - September 2009 On arrival at Stanstead airport on a cold Friday September morning, clothes in one bag, Cd's in the other, we were waiting with bated breath for the departure to Girona airport in Spain. On arrival at 10.30 local time it was obvious that Little Stevie, Siobhan and myself were not the only people on the flight attending the 3rd Med-Soul week in Lloret.

Cabs were soon ordered and all of us, along with Big Darrell, Tony Allen and the lovely Sarah and Nina together with a many others soon headed to the resort. I must say on arrival at the Olympic complex, I was amazed at the size and quality of the rooms and the amenities in the hotel. It was obvious Dave and Vicky had done their homework as the hotel was of the highest quality. Some clothes were quickly thrown on and the late arrivals soon made their way to the Voramar beach bar, our place of residence during the day for the next 5 days. (I had missed the pool party the day before so I was already regretting not doing the 7 nights option!)

On arrival Calvin Francis (Choice FMs best dj) was spinning some lovely RnB to go with what can only be explained as the BIGGEST cocktails you will see anywhere in EUROPE, and I mean that. Followed by Jim Jackson, the music and alcohol continued to flow from 12 til 6 daily along with yours truly and the other dj's each taking 2 hour stints in rotation to keep our crowd and the admirers who joined us content during the hot days. On return at 7pm some food was consumed and we prepared for our first night at Bumpers, our home for the next 5 nights.

I was amazed at the club that Dave and Vicki had secured exclusively for Med-Soul members. Sound of the highest quality, friendly bar staff and 3 of the biggest but also friendliest doorman you could wish to meet. There was no way that anybody who wasn't wearing the Med-Soul wristband was going to gain admission. On the first night all genres of music were played and as is the norm everybody let their hair down, and the walk back to the hotel was accompanied by the usual howls of laughter, especially directed at me as Big Steve Marven played one of the best visual gags I had seen in a long time. My first set was at 2am and unbeknown to me Steve had gone to all Med-Soul attendees and told them to walk out of the club as soon as I hit the first play button. Sure enough I was soon playing to 4 bar staff and 1 sound engineer, pure class big Steve. And that set the tone for the

remaining 5 days. SOUL, FUN, ALCOHOL and just the pleasure of some truly great friends and new found people who have become close buddies. Unfortunately 5 days fly by as quick as anything so next year I am definitely doing the full week.

I must say a big thank you to my partners on the decks; Calvin Francis, Jim Jackson, Tony Allen, Chris Box and of course my brother Little Steve and the rest of the crew. Lastly but not least, the biggest thanks go to Dave and his wife Vicky for the effort and time they have used ensuring the usage of a top notch Hotel, a fantastic beach bar at which to spend the days and a fantastic night club to spend the nights. Finally the biggest thanks to everybody who attended Med-Soul 3; I know the recession may have hit, but the hardy souls who made it deserve the highest respect, and you know what, having a smaller number enabled everybody to get to know each other closely as opposed to the 300+ from last year, where you would struggle to give everybody a bit of time. I am sure they will all be back in September 2010 for Med-Soul 4, along with the additions to the DJ line-up. JazzFunkSoul, Charlie Wrights – 12 Dec Still hungry for more, we headed over to Hoxton to the Christmas JFS where Santa Neville was playing to a party hungry lot alongside Colin Scott and Steve Day. This long established soulful night is always worth hitting, especially as it goes on til 4am!

Jazzifunk, The Hare & Hounds, Birmingham – Boxing Night Snow falling, freezing cold, I’m outside and I know who is on the decks (I always do) da Buzzboy at his finest alongside the wonderful Colin Curtis and Bruce Q. Inside what a lovely warm crowd and such a fabulous dance off that us girls had to hug the wall at one point – Brilliant! Mentioning no names, someone danced so hard they injured their knee!!!. A covered and heated smoking area, good parking, copious cabs and a £20 a night hotel just up the road – what are you waiting for? Well done George Powell!

Soul Network Party, Digress City - New Years Eve A sisterly well done to Vivy Bee – this was my first experience of Soul Network in this way and a great night had by all! Nice nosh, plenty of poppers and a deluge of delectable djs to delight! There is a reason why Soul Network is so successful – try it for yourself – roll on Soul in the Algarve – I’ll be the one in comfortable shoes !

BackIILife (Soul2Soul) @ The Jazz Cafe – New Years Day It had to be done – even after 3 days of sleep deprivation. Hubby and I grabbed some Z’s, jumped in the penny mobile and headed to Camden to hook up with some friends and boogie with the Funki Dreds and boy are we glad we did! This ever funky venue was heaving with friends and familiar clubbers who know where it’s at! Jazzie B on the decks doin’ what only a few (in my humble opinion) can and that is please the crowd. The gent that is Aitch B on the dance floor as usual and Jazzi, cool as a Qcumber front and centre. We all ripped into party tunes such as Gold Digger, Hotstepper, Apparently Nuthin and of course BackIILife and I even got my bit of reggae. I had a happy face, dancing to that thumping bass, surrounded by a loving race. A week of this in Antigua..? oh yes please! What a fantabulous funki foot-flinging start to 2010.

Now in its 19th year "Saint Lucia Jazz" is always a spectacular occasion bringing to life the Caribbean’s exuberance and capturing the spirit of this magnificent luscious island.

On the 1st of May 2010 this Caribbean island will begin nine days celebrating all things cool, smooth and jazz. The festival brings together the rich, dusky tones of jazz, sensuous soul, cool calypso beats and world rhythms from some of the greatest artists in the music industry, and attracts music lovers from all corners of the globe. The confirmed line up and events schedule is due to be finalised mid January, but with confirmed acts so far that include Earl Klugh, Jean-Luc Ponty, Maxi Priest, Steel Pulse, Foreigner, Carimi, Harvey Millar Monty Maxwell, Carl Gustave and Teddyson John, this event does have something for everyone.

The first days of the event are dedicated to the fringe events, street parties and beach gatherings celebrating local bands and artists like the legendary guitarist Boo Hickson and enigmatic saxophonist Rob Z Taylor and female sensation Sister Act. The entire island of St Lucia is a stage for the festival. Visitors will find “Teatime Jazz” at La Place Carenage duty free shopping centre, “Fond D’Or Jazz” in the spectacular views of Heritage Park and “Jazz in the South” at Rudy John Beach, with many of these events being "free of charge".

Pigeon Island is the setting for the main stage. A World Heritage site, the old fort and magnificent sea view provides the ideal backdrop.

St Lucia has a lot more to offer, hosting a wealth of natural wonders. You can scale the heights of the stunning Pitons, indulge in the sulphur springs of the Qualibou Volcano, take a sky ride on wires through tropical rain forests or just soak up the sun with a rum punch on one of the many white sandy beaches.
