Shaun Escoffery My friend Monique Hamilton quotes you as one of her favourite cousins and remembers you all growing up as kids and always singing and on occasions being punished for doing so. How far back can you recall singing and what were the songs back then? I remember singing anything from Michael Jackson to whatever was current at the time and I was always getting told off. Being Jamaican, my Dad would say “Shaun.. shut up ....wah you a sing fa?” I got that constantly but now my dad’s one of my biggest fans. It was one of those things that came naturally and it used to make me feel good and that hasn’t changed but now I want to give people pleasure as I feel it, cause I love it. I’m not in it for the money or for the fame. I like to get paid but I love making music, expressing myself and giving that back. Prior to your 2002 Oyster album I was aware of you from an off shoot project collaboration of D’Influence’s then manager Paul Kennedy and band members Kwame Kwaten, Sarah Webb & Steve Williams. In 1996 on the Freak Street album, Beatz Bumps & Afros Vol1, you sang Got To Find Me A Love using the Gap Band’s Outstanding and Hi Tension’s There’s A Reason percussion break. How did you become part of that underground album and how was it to work with the infrastructure of the successful D’influence members? Thats right; Oh my gosh, I’ve known Sarah since we 04 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

were kids as our mothers were friends from years back. When D Influence’s career broke I was just trying to get into the industry and spoke to Sarah for some advice and she invited me onto this project she was working on. It was the first time I’d been in a professional studio so I was quite overwhelmed and extremely nervous as D Influence were killing it back then. I walked in and knocked up this rough demo and they put it out and we got some good feedback. I’ve got a lot to be thankful for from Sarah, Kwame and D’Influence. What were you doing between 96-2002 before you signed to Oyster? I was actually studying building construction and went into acting in musicals and continued doing demos and writing for people. I saw an article in Black Echoes that Chaka Khan was doing a new musical Mama I Wanna Sing with open auditions. My Mum suggested I go and at first I was reluctant but went and sung a gospel song like Amazing Grace and left. I was so green I didn’t even give them any contact details as I looked at it as a great experience. I moved to Ilford in Essex and Basil Meade of the London Community Gospel Choir was the MD (Musical Director) of the show and managed to find me.

Growing up in Dallas Texas famed for it’s American football, cowboys and JR Ewing, what soul food life were you digesting before you got your musical break? My life in Dallas consisted of a lot of gospel and country and western from my family influence. I grew up in a very religious home and listened more to soul music as I got older. How did you form your relationship with Erykah Badu and become a background singer on the legendary Badzism album? We were both part of the scene in Dallas and started vibing and doing music together. I had the opportunity so sing background with her and from there it kind of evolved. I was working on my music before I went on tour with her. I eventually put out my first album Little Lost Girl’s Blues in 1999 so it was the introduction that people knew me from in the industry. Your Little Lost Girl’s Blues album, the first of two with Cheeky I Records, was recorded with a noticeable difference with your varying vocal range. What made you flip the script for the theme of the 2nd album with more uptempo tracks? I evolve each time I make music so it was about finding my voice with the music. Each time you go to the next evolution you discover those things and incorporate it in the music. I discovered you when DJ Colin Scott played the boogiefied Daydreamer around five years back and after a mission obtained 2 vinyl copies of Tunin up & Cosignin. It’s an 12 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

ZROY T I F TO

incredible soul jazz rhythm & blues album utilizing some talented musicians. What kind of challenge was it to create that live feel on a budget on the Indie label Cheeky I records, when so many were reliant on technology in 2001? Music changed how we were doing things and I wanted to create something as if people were coming to see a show. In a show I wouldn’t use so much technology so we got a studio in Dallas that recorded in two inch to give people that feeling of a live show. It created an element that had some technology but focused on how to make real music like using a four string bass, rhodes piano and everything. The whole album is faultless not a duff track on it, other favourite's are I Think For Sure, Soul From The Abyss, Call Me and Lonely Woman/Evas’ song, what songs do you treasure from that album? Ode to Nina is one I treasure as it came from a painful experience, so putting it down and singing it the way I did was based on what I was going through and how it came through the music, and people connected to it when they first heard the song. Call Me was a fluke getting on the album as it was borne out of playing around in the studio. Daydreamer was a lot of fun which I wrote with a producer Ty Maclin and we recorded it live. It’s an upbeat energy performed song and it’s about finding your best and reaching for the sky, don’t forget the day dream as it’s important but you have to put it into action.

Ode to Nina is scary as you really captured her spirit and emotion in the song, like I heard Nina cover Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit. I see you as a strong black and proud Nubian soul woman like Nina Simone who was not only an all round performing artist but an activist too. Have you any aspirations to go down a similar path if those doors opened up for you? I think I will as it’s important to stick with things you believe. There are things I want to fight for so you will see more things come to fruition as time passes. One for the fella’s.. Who or what is your idea of a strong man? Wow... he needs to have a strong sense of self, be considerate and strong about his people. To be considerate of women and have a love relationship with his Mother. Men should have respect, decency and kindness for human life and be self made in their own purpose in life that they don’t live through someone else. They have their own passion and aspirations and things that drive and make them happy and have sensitivity to life’s passions, like music, food and spirituality. They must also be comfortable with me being myself as the butterfly that I am, they don’t have to hold on to it and let it be free cause the butterfly doesn’t stray too far, it always comes back. Fabian Stephenson, a renowned customer serving music consultant thankfully directed me to your incredulous 12 on Stax Cant’ Change Me mixed by Ron Trent. This is an epic disco production, did you do the vocals again for that mix

and how did you feel once you heard Ron Trent’s finished article? I didn’t get a chance to re do the vocals, Ron took this and made it a piece of art for people to connect with the message, even more so about being solid within yourself. Ron and I always wanted to work together live but it never happened so we’re gonna work on some things in the future. I’ve seen footage of you on YouTube dancing like an African warrior princess, how important to you is the synchronicity of dance and music as there’s natural and choreographed and often today’s generation cannot see the difference? Naturally it falls into line with how the spirit moves you, it gives you a different take on what music means. When it’s choreographed it can be a great performance but the element of spontaneity can be missed, so it’s important that natural choreography tends to be more in line with how the music makes me feel. It does what ever the music draws me to do and I’m caught up in the moment and the spirit of it, dancing to the music. Now that’s the energy I want the audience to connect to when I’m performing on a base level something way down in the spirit that I’m hoping to bring. We reviewed your Pink Elephant album in issue 21 with it’s enriched southern soul. It’s poignant that the album retains that important Stax, Atlantic ambience of Syl Johnson, Al Green, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Isaac Hayes.

‘...and the living is easy...’ I like the summertime for lots of reasons. Days last longer, music sounds better and I get to wear my hats with a daring tilt. Alright, I can do that in the winter too, but there’s no denying the tunes sound a touch more special when the sun’s out. Gerardo Frisina knows this and the man from Milan’s 5th album ‘Join The Dance’ on Schema Records is perfectly timed to bring a touch of afro-cuban jazz inspired sunshine to Twenty-Ten. We also love those early sunrises at the ‘Jump Start’ and although we may be a tad bleary eyed, our ears are always functioning and we couldn’t help but notice that Neo’s 2nd album ‘Welcome To The Boom Boom Room’ is a corker. Turn up ‘It’s Not What You Got’ to a healthy volume and you’ll be thanking me next time we meet. However, your bank balances won’t thank me for the next couple of must-haves. It’s not my fault, it’s that dangerous combination of top quality jazz influenced hip hop, soul and dance that come packaged as Japanese imports. Kenichiro Nishihara’s ‘Life’ has been around for a wee while now, but keeps getting better and better with each play and the list of guests on Anan Ryoko’s underplayed ‘Another Beginning’ reads like a who’s who of my favourites: Navasha Day, Tasita D’Mour and Monday Michiru (honestly, I’m not stalking you) are present. Also included are Kero One (reminiscent of Common) and Quasimode, which all adds up to one joyous collection of styles & grooves. ‘Man About The House’ As much as my little lot love their House Music, I’m still getting the occasional comment about my leanings towards the tribal and more percussion driven side of dance. A perfect exam-

ple of things up my alley is ‘Nights In Africa’ by Renn on Reel People Music. With an EddieGrant-a-like (must remember that!) vocal and a quite beautiful final 2 minutes, this is definitely one of my faves of 2010 so far! Doubling up at our ‘Block Party’ & ‘Something Blue’ sessions at Russell’s is Greg Stainer’s ‘ Sax Is Back’ and DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto’s ‘Vem Rebola’. I may have to use a subtle blend of brute force and pig-ignorance to convince them I know best. Rest assured, determination will see me through... ‘The weekender circuit...’ It’s recently been pointed out to me that I’m on ‘the weekender circuit’, so if I crossed paths with any of you at either Prestatyn or Southport let me just say it wasn’t me. It was my evil twin who’s out to ruin my good name, not to mention my reputation as a natty dresser and dapper dancer. If you see this imposter again, be sure not to buy him a beer or lend him any money. I am, however, hoping to catch some of you at the next Soul Village Weekender which takes place at Riviera Bay Holiday Park, Brixham, Devon on Fri 2nd-Mon 5th July 2010. If last year’s was anything to go by I’ll be needing my sunblock, some paracetamol and a few days kip to recover from all the fun. Feel free to mention my name when you book this event as I’ll get an extra piece of blancmange from the organisers... Ciao for now! GT x

Record reviews Music Is The Food Of Life - David Mensah Ladies will love this like they do Milk Tray chocolates from the handsome athletic smooth singer songwriter David Mensah. Noticeably his singing retains it’s UK dialect identity on this aptly titled album where a chilled relaxed r&b production meets nu soul. He pays his ode to music on Food Of Love and We’re Gonna Take You Back and covers a distinguishing version of the classic Fly Me to the Moon. Also check out the acoustic Love In The Morning and the melodious My Day from this debut album.

Los Charly’s Orchestra Chicano Disco Funk This trio of funky disco retroness came to SS HQ via Sean P. A pleasure to treasure; these pieces are full of musicality, synths and drum fills. First of two instrumentals, Funk Inspector, is typical of the 70‘s disco hustle sound with it’s signature rhodes and strings stabs. The second Disco Gamma retains the early 80’s percussive boogie feel with an echo sounded UK Brit Funk horn section. Funk Flow, the most downtempo cut, is the only vocal track feat Stuart Lisbie with a nice subtle early percussive Go Go arrangement. Funky like the Blackbyrds Junkie - available now. Cyberworks - The Sound Of The Drum For those who like their beats broken, these 3 mixes are worth having. With a vocal monologue and a Chuck D Welcome To The Terror Dome vocal these fast and furious beats are crisp like new Bank Of England notes. The DBR mix is a more downtempo trip/hip hop break mix for the turntablists. The Rumble mix is for the Bruk/Broken beat heads with it’s drum & bass UK Garage sub bass bottom end dubness. My personal choice is the alternative roller coaster 5.57 minute mix that sounds like early Jazzanova on acid. Visit http://dbr.ithinkmusic.com AC Soul Symphony - Still In Love ZR Post Gwen Dickey, this is my favourite Rose Royce track, Still In Love revamped, featuring it’s original vocalist Ricci Benson. Joey Negro leaves his signature hi hat 4 floor production all over this 2010 rendition. With a Love Symphony, Jazz Funk Dub, Reprise, Accapella mixes, strange strings & things and Sunburst’s members like Tony Remy in tow, you can hear it in it’s glory like those at Southport 46. Another popular release from ZR records. Jump Start - Various What better way to showcase ya radio show than to reflect that via an album. SS’s Ginger Tony’s Jump Start comp was fully endorsed by Dr Bob Jones in the sleeve notes confessing to want everything GT plays. Full of Latin, scat, funk, house and jazz dance cuts, check out Dig & Swing, Day By Day and the female Mario Biondi Brenda Baykin’s Love Is In Town. Alternatively visit the pure soul quality of a Black Gold Of The Sun influenced I Believe feat, Stephanie McKay. Now getting more bookings than a football defender, GT’s Jump Start no longer going underground like the Jam! Soul Unsigned 4 - Various Phil Driver’s Soul Unsigned 4 champions yet another 14 carefully chosen independent soul jazz and funk compilation. It’s inclusion has fusion from The Doggett Bro’s Azymuths Jazz Carnival meets Incognito’s Shine On Azure Sky, a soulful EWF influenced My Desire, a mid 80’s moog boogie filled My World by Thia Jasmine and FL Jones disco B lined I Choose You. With Freddie Lee’s gospel Great I Am in the mix, the album ends on a Mizell Bro’s type production on the femme fatale cut I Love by Zakiyah. Like the Joneses or Mirage some nice Summer Grooves to choose from here. 20 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

The 2010 Summer Sessions - Various !"#$%&'()*'+, !"#$% %&'()* *'+, Ex Savannah member Mike Thompson hand picks 14 tracks of diversity like the BGT dancing winners. Amongst the talent are Uptown Empire-70‘s Over & Over influenced Boogie and Clarisse’s sexy latin Voce Me Da. Two of the stand out cuts are Maiko Watson lazy disco boogie vocal - Some Kinda Love alongside Fredricks Brown Afro beat bumper Betrayal. Cool Million’s popular Back For More, Soopersoul funkster Do Me Wrong and Maralyn Ashford’s gospel filled The Jesus In Me personify their varied individual genres. The album ends on four soulful 4 floor cuts with Floetic - Under Love being my penultimate personal choice. Nice selection! Carl Anderson - Absence With Out Love & On & On Ralph Tee has fittingly released two albums on one CD from the late Carl Anderson. Listening to him reminds me of Michael Wycoff ’s early dynamic quality on the first 3 tracks AWOL with Teena Marie, Going Out and the atmospheric Amour. Clearly an admirer of the 8th wonder Stevie’s compositions, included is Carl’s everlasting anthem Buttercup and a unique cover of the impassioned heart rendering ballad Lately. His voice penetrates over uplifting tracks Magic and Keep It Alive and intertwines within the mellowness of the album titled On & On and Time To Win. Here you have a chance to recapture Carl’s visible and missed brilliance. -.+%/010%2!#33+45%!+(()"' -.+ %/010%2! !#33+45%!+(())"'

Lou Rawls - Now Is the Time/Closed Company Apart from the late Teddy P, the other baritone champion of PIR records has to be the late Lou Rawls. Lou the linguistic master could adapt and glide like an eagle over any music production of any tempo as heard on these post PIR Epic recordings. Two steppers Will You Kiss Me One More Time, Ain’t That Love Baby and Back To You are sung effortlessly whilst he narrates his melodious voice like he’s speaking on When We Were Young, Forever I Do and MJ’s Rod Temperton classic tear jerker Lady In My Life. His vocal range on Sunshine is truly inspiring. Richard Earnshaw In Time (Groovefinder Records) July 5th With an all star line up of Carleen Anderson, Jocelyn Brown, Kenny Thomas, Ursula Rucker and Roy Ayers, Richard Earnshaw showcases his album soon to be witnessed live at the Jazz Cafe in June 2010. He accomplishes crossing various black music genres, tempo’s and positive lyrics as sampled on My Door Is Open,Worthy and Rise, as well as the Headhunters’ fusion dimensions explored on the instrumental Green Room. Check out also Kenny Thomas’ Waiting, Erik Dilliard & Roy Ayers’s In Time and a cover of Cry Me A River on this highly polished like Mr Sheen glistening cd!!

Avery - Sunshine (Dome) Imagine Anita Baker, Angie Stone and Jill Scott all rolled into one and you get Avery Sunshine, an all round seasoned singer and songwriter. I can listen to her album’s journey from start to finish without pause as the music is of such a high quality. Judging this, her pending live UK show will be a sell out. She oozez over classic southern soul numbers Need You Now and The Ugly Part Of Me and brings a retro Motown production on I Got Sunshine as well as colluding on her version with Roy Ayers of Everybody Loves (Sunshine). BUY THIS TODAY!! Twin Cities - Raincloud/Anticipation (Mukatsuku Records) Mindblowin like Smooth’s Jive classic, I love this one Nik Weston big up ya chest sir!! Amazing production with Phlash project’s Shea Soul’s voice charming the birds out of the trees on Raincloud, a phat rugged dub stringed piece of musical magic. Anticipation feats. Duchy easin in sweetly like Edwin Starr over a snappy bumpy snare drum, programmed with simplistically placed synths and melodic strings. Look out for a limited 7 from the dynamic twin Cities Duo Guynamite & Anolog Jones forthcoming from the Like That Every Time album. Onra - Long Distance/High Hopes (All City) Though I receive free music, being old school, I still do a limited amount of record hunting. I discovered this boombastic Long Distance walking out of Sounds Of The Universe in Soho when my bionic ears pricked to it’s sonics. Mastered in France with a kind of early 90’s Hip Hop phatness, this early 80’s lushness is layered aptly by Oliver Daysoul’s contemporary 2010 R&B soul vocals. Sounds wrong but it so works and Anna loves this too. B side High Hopes is a very slowed down sample of the SOS Classic feat Reggie B with improvised vocals. Both cuts have devastating dangerous instrumentals. Music For Jazz Dancers - Various (Freestyle) Totally for those who like to Freedom Jazz Dance like Eddie Jefferson RIP. From Be Bop to samba Jazz Fusion and big band ensembles Adrian Gibson collates 12 monsters featured at the Messin’ Around sessions he’s run for over 14 years with Jazzcotech dancer Perry Louis. Dianne Reeves expertly scats on Cherokee for openers whilst Primo and The Group’s A Child Runs Free will sit nicely with Mario Biondi and Brenda Baykin’s jazz anthems. The slowest cut is my favourite Kenichiro-Nebulosa and most welcomed, taking me back to my jazz dance days. Jazz juices with flavours to savour to quench ya thirst!! Still Bill Alex Vlack & Damani Baker were fortunate to chronicle the amazing life of singer songwriter Bill Withers in their DVD Still Bill. You get an insight into how this humble, emotional and philosophical human being overcomes not only the overt racism and restrictions placed on him in the music industry and suffering from asthma, but what was once deemed by one teacher as his handicap.. to curb his stutter aged 28. Bill speaks with the authority and presence commanded similar to Morgan Freeman and narrates how he grew up in Slab Fork West Virginia as the youngest of 13 children who joined the navy at 17. He financed his own first recording and sought no affirmation from the industry “blacksperts” as he refers to (white music experts on black music) who suggested ideologies of him covering Elvis Presley’s In The Ghetto, he so despised playing the fame game. There’s vintage footage of him appearing on the Johnny Carson show when Ain’t No Sunshine hit the charts, and the Live Concert in Zaire for the famous Ali/Forman Rumble In The Jungle. We see his family interaction where his wife Marcia narrates how she met him at a Gil Scott Heron concert, and how his calling to be a family man and father to his kids, Kori and Todd, far outweighed the demands of the music industry. On occasion his honesty and humbleness is compelling as he divulges his feelings of suffering from manic depression and sheds tears when honored at a New York school for students who stutter. He revisits his old neighbourhood where childhood friends pay tribute, as do Clarence Avant of Sussex Records, James Gadson and Sting of the music world. Amongst the soundtrack are his Another Day To Run, Lean On Me Harlem, Who Is He And What Is He To You, Ain’t No Sunshine, Grandma’s Hands and Just The Two Of Us, reminding us of how magnificent Still Bill is.

Out The Box

......its not all four to the floor you know! Words DJ Marcia Carr

It’s been a busy couple of months with an assortment of pivotal underground club nights in London's capitol continually 'keeping it real' and worth checking out such as Room4Movement run by Uprock crew and DJ/producer Phil Asher's Inspiration Information and Restless Soul monthly parties. Thank you Alex and Dave & the STP crew for welcoming LadyBugZ to the annual Southport Weekender in May – we debuted in the Beat Bar and loved it! I too also enjoyed a solo Beat Bar DJ slot with Bob Jeffries and ‘Sir’ Kev Beadle - thanks guys. Moving on to some music reviews and a taste of what’s good for you; Former saxophonist to superstar Beyonce Tia Fuller finds her own spotlight with this tremendous debut single ‘Decisive Steps’ (Mack Avenue Records) lifted from her same-titled marvellous long player. From the start it’s clear to hear Fuller’s chops blow hard into the complex arrangement of this original score. On upright bass fellow band member Miriam Sullivan has a nice flow and Fuller’s sister Shamia Royston excels on piano and guest trumpeter and label mate Sean Jones’ accompaniment maintains the full frontal motion of what is ultimately an energised, strong jazz piece that is perfect for dancers and enthusiasts alike. Philadelphian songstress Lady Alma (4Hero/King Britt/Fanatix) and accomplished keyboard player Mark de Clive Lowe cover Michael Jackson’s ‘Can’t Help It’ in fine style and now finally sees the light of day Stateside on the vinyl-only Alala Records owned by Bobbito Garcia. Kept in mind are elements of the original with its haunting string melody amplified on this update. Additionally, an array of sweet percussion dress up simple broken beats, a bed of warbling synths and Alma’s soulful ad libs come together beautifully on the mix. Making a big impression on a variety of leading DJs right now is ‘Still In Love’ fronted by Navasha Daya (Fertile Ground) on lead vocals who’s teamed up again with producer Shuya Okino (Kyoto Jazz Massive) – the two worked on the cult jazz floor stomper ‘Thank You’. Expertly reinterpreting the Rose Royce classic soul ballad, this adaptation bridges the gap between soulful house and jazz with lush strings, melodious piano chords and a ballsy performance from Daya. Indispensable! Lazer Kru are longtime fixtures of Broadcite productions and events running several years. Long overdue LK’s four-track EP features some brilliant new material. Manwell’s earthy tones front the broken soul track ‘Firecracker’, ‘Linear’ produced by DJ’s Insomniax & C3i feature Samira Owusutu on a spacey dub-like cut. While my favourite ‘Loss Of Our Life’ with Noreen Stewart’s emotive lyrics on a broken beat backdrop is a soon to be classic and Johnny Miller’s ‘Funk Thang’ vocalled by Andrea Clarke has a definite Bugz In The Attic feel about it, rounding off this quality digital release. Essential new LP’s • Tia Fuller ‘Decisive Steps’ (Mack Avenue Records) • Diesler ‘Tie Breaker’ (Social Beats) • Richy Pitch ‘Ye Fre Mi’ (BBE) • Portformat ‘The Repeat Factor Remixes’ (Tokyo Dawn)

• Kay Suzuki ‘Consciousness’ (Round In Motion) • Peven Everett ‘Beyond The Universe’ (Tribe) • Andy Compton ‘Kholofelo’ (Peng)

SOUL IN THE ALGARVE V

The Soul In The Algarve 2010 experience truly was an epic journey for all Dj’s, staff, and 400 paid up SITA participants. Amazingly with lastmin.com packing everything went smoothly. Memorable highlights include the white night fancy dress at Kathedral OMG, brilliant white like DAZ with Stevie Dundee mashin’ it like Smash potato with his revival reggae & lovers set. The Sol Auga Sunday afternoon session had the best sun, sea, sangria and sexy sonics followed by the cops & robbers fancy dress quiz event, which could be heralded as one of the greatest, with Judge Darrell holding court and Bob Beard voted best dressed as Robo Cop of the new quiz champions Belly to Belly Part 3, poaching by one contentious point the former winners Soul Survivors doing the treble. The Cowboys & Indians fancy dress party at Canico and the tabletop cancan dance, Rudy‘s salsa classes and Patrizia’s fitness workout on Canico beach all received applause. The final farewell was tearful for some...crying not to get on the airport bus. Our team captain VIVY B remained positive and smiled regardless of the adversities. Her synergy skills are commended below from a few who will forever be thankful, like William De Vaughn, for what they got. Fitzroy

Hi Vivy I hope you and your family all returned safely from what will be remembered as the best Soul in the Algarve we have experienced thus far. Not only was this holiday more eagerly anticipated than usual but the Gods smiled on us for the first time in five visits and delivered five unbroken days of sunshine and warmth. The events were excellent and those I attended were thoroughly enjoyable. Please send my thanks and best wishes to your excellent team of DJs, administrative staff and other helpers ensuring that the week's entertainment, amenities and facilities are so efficiently managed. Although it was undoubtedly a team effort, a special word of praise must be given to Patrickson, whose unfailing enthusiasm, camaraderie and bonhomie - often after a few hours sleep - was appreciated by all those who witnessed it. The first timers, of whom there were many, must have been impressed by the organisation and handling of what has become an increasingly complex affair. It is to your credit that we are already booked and looking forward to 2011. I look forward to seeing you at the reunion later this month where I expect to recognise at least three songs during the evening! (My knowledge of rare grooves and chill out music has increased). Maureen joins me in sending you our fond regards. Kenelm Hi Vivy Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for expertly organising Soul In Algarve this year, especially with all that palaver going on with flights being cancelled etc etc. You somehow managed to remain calm and in control, I don't know how you do it. Thanks for sorting us out such fab accommodation, it was the business, the best so far, we loved everything about it. The weather, clubs, the beach, white night, the fancy dress, every day/night was fantastic. SIA 2010 was a resounding success, not just for my group (11 this year, looks like more coming next year), long may it continue. I personally enjoyed it even more than previous years and you know how much I love the whole experience since I started going. Can't wait for next year, just sorting out the logistics, and hopefully booking up soon. Thanks again. You're a star! Angela Scrivener x Hi Vivy Thanks to you and all your team for making my first experience of Soul in the Algarve a fantastic one. I have made lots of great new friends that I will keeping in touch with for life. I have already booked for next year and cannot wait to have that experience again. Thanks to you all. Lov ya loads Angela Lafeuille xx Hi Vivy Hope you are all relaxed now from a wicked week away, you guys were brill and did yourselves proud. It was a wicked first time for me and now looking forward to the Barbados one. Thanks for everything and hope you’re cool. Alison Weatherall xx 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

DJ Greg Wilson talks to Soul Survivor Member Raph Parkinson When did you become a DJ? I started off as a club DJ at the Chelsea Reach in New Brighton in December 75. The Timepiece was mainly a Black club, were you made welcome? I went the first time with two older DJ’s, Terry Lennaine, the presenter of Radio Merseyside’s Soul show ‘Keep On Truckin’’ and Dave Porter, who later worked for the station. I was certainly aware of being out of my comfort zone, being the first time I’d been in an environment where as a white guy, I was very much in the minority. I was 16 at the time from Wallasey, where only a handful of black people lived, so there was bound to be some trepidation, but the atmosphere of the club took a hold of me and I forgot the initial sense of danger and began to immerse myself in the music and checking out the dancing, which was on a different level to anything I’d previously seen. We walked to the DJ booth where Les Spaine was with maybe half a dozen DJ’s stood near the booth asking him about tracks he was playing and writing them down. I was introduced to Les, who was very warm, as he always was and by this point any concerns about my personal safety had been put aside – the reality of the situation was that white guys weren’t judged by their skin colour, if they were genuinely into the music they were more than welcome. I was already a big black music fan dating back a number of years from when my older brother and sister were buying Soul singles in the 60’s, so a club like The Timepiece represented everything I aspired to – a cutting-edge crowd into upfront black music, mainly US 28 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

imports, and a scene where the dancers were something to behold. I set myself an aim there and then that one day I’d work with such an audience, and this was achieved 5 years later when I took over the Wednesday night at Legend in Manchester which would go on to become one of the most influential black music nights of its era. Was there a colour bar in night clubs in Liverpool during the 70s? I wasn’t deejaying in Liverpool, but over the water where there were very few black people anyhow. I always remember a crew of black guys who used to come on a Monday night when I worked at another New Brighton club called the Penny Farthing. The Chelsea Reach was always packed on a Monday, but closed at midnight, so some would head over to the Penny for the final couple of hours (we closed at 2am) including these guys. I remember 2 of them, particularly Tappa and Kofi, and I was always pleased to see them as it gave me the opportunity to go full-on Funk, knowing that they’d instantly take to the dancefloor. I actually did my first ‘Funk Night’ on Mondays at the Penny Farthing as a result of this – they certainly played their part in setting the tone, which allowed me to take this step at a time when most local DJ’s might be playing Soul and Funk, but only alongside the more Pop based releases that were in the charts. The Penny Farthing was owned by Chinese guys, and there was never a hint of racism there, although generally speaking, there was a lot of tokenism within the clubs - they might let in a couple of black guys, but that would be the extent of it.

Event reviews/letters Soul in the Sun – Tenerife – April 2010 The volcanic ash cloud almost succeeded in wrecking this year’s Soul in the Sun in Tenerife, but just in time the airports reopened and most people arrived showing their tenacity and determination to get there one way or another. (How’s that for soul surviving?) New and old friendships were soon made and rediscovered – this year we celebrated possibly our oldest sunner’s 79th birthday!! – Looking forward to your 80th Brian. New venue (Vivo) in Veronicas proved a huge success with good outdoor and indoor capacity for day and night-time activities. The day-time Pirate themed fancy dress party had a big turnout with many fantastic outfits. The DJs did a great job playing a superbly selected mash-up of oldies, Motown, 70s/80s soul and a variety of Northern anthems, all easy to dance to without exhausting ourselves in the heat. After many laid back afternoons and late nights and with fantastic weather to remember it all by, we all sadly said goodbye until the next time. A special mention should be made to all the DJs for catering to our needs, especially the ‘marvellous’ Chris Priestley, Gary White, Graham Slater, Tony ‘the Hat’ and of course Eddy Edmondson for all his efforts, who despite all the setbacks of the last few months, once again managed to pull it off. Russell Ashton - Derbyshire

DecadAnce @ Momos – Kemia Bar, Heddon Street W1 I was extremely elated to hear that Barrie Thomas, creator of the BTM Club, had secured this venue for the first of another regular night of delight. It was certainly welcomed by regular attendees of BTM Club events. Momos, with its intimate smouldering and sublime surroundings, fabulous food and the infamous yet infallible Barrie K Sharpe on the decks alongside djsoulprovyder and his friend jamming on his sax – how delectably decadent for a Wednesday. The BTM club nights should not be missed by Sophisticated Soul Survivors - with regular nights such as “Reunited” at Cherry Jam and Oasis – djs usually include Jazzi Q (soul2soul), Christopher Fatboy Harvey, Lewis Mastermind Benn to name but a few and of course, Barrie Thomas himself. Funky and full on party nights, for the more mature and discerning clubber. So all you Soul Survivors – shrug off that sofa, seek out your sparkles and spats, forget the footie and the foodie shows – why wait for the weekend to be wonderfully wicked ;-) Veronica Jankovic aka Penelope Pitstop - Northants Angela Johnson @ The Jazz Cafe Thursday 6th May Angela Johnson, former vocalist of Coolys Hot Box, was tonight showcasing songs from her current CD "It's Personal". Angela connected with her audience the moment she arrived on stage. A natural performer, she sang and chatted with the gathering in this renowned intimate venue with ease and great charm. She performed "Only One", "Hurts like Hell", which Angela wrote for her Mother, who sadly passed away. This was obviously a hard 30 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

song for her to sing as it was so personal, but she put in an amazing performance and having her Father there, was a tremendous inspiration for her to sing it so well. "Be Myself", "Indie in me", "On the Radio", "Get Myself Together" were all included, and "All in Me" was performed with the very talented Lex Cameron in place of Darien. Angela and Lex’s vocals married so well together, I hope to hear a duet with them both in the future. Angela rounded off the evening with her rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give it Up", which got all the audience moving and tapping their toes. A wonderful way to end a most enjoyable and memorable evening. Virtual Jazz Band @ The Jazz Cafe Thursday 15 April Virtual Jazz is a collection of great musicians varying in styles and influences whose common ground is a love of jazz. Appearing were Junior Giscombe, KG, David Mensah, Virginia Constantine, Sumudu and founder member Wayne Brown on keyboards. Tonight Virtual Jazz were showcasing their inaugural album, the Jazz Club Volume one, featuring their broad range of latin, funk, soul and blues influences. David Mensah sang "Fly me to the Moon" and "God Bless the Child", both renditions were heart felt and vocally flawless. Junior was the main guest tonight, and he certainly made his performance special. "Mama used to say", his big hit from the eighties was a total remix, more funky and jazzier. Junior performed with passion and zest, which is apparent for all to see when he performs. "Morning has come" was just a sublime treat to hear performed live, and in my opinion his best track to date. Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" was brilliantly performed with Junior's vocals at their best. An enjoyable evening for both performers and the audience. Maze featuring Frankie Beverley @ Indigo2 Sat 10 April Tonight Maze were performing the first of their two dates at the Indigo2 to a full capacity crowd. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation for the legendary band infamous for their live performances. Frankie mentioned the band, who hail from Philadelphia, and have been together for 45 years, a tremendous achievement which is proven with their musical longevity. The songs kept coming, performed superbly as always. "Reachin’ down inside" and "I want to feel I'm wanted" were a brilliant addition to the playlist and not songs I'd heard them play live before. "Golden Time of the Day", "We are One", "Love is the Key", Running Away", "Before I Let Go", "Back in Stride", and of course "Joy and Pain" where Frankie ably assisted Philip Woo on keyboards. Maze, with their tremendous back catalogue of songs, could have played for at least another hour, but sadly all good things do have to come to an end and Maze did not disappoint, they are, as always, the greatest band to hear live. Southport 46 through the eyes of moi da Buzzboy Fitzroy After the unprecedented turbulence of the volcanic ash and the morning aftermath of the 2010 General Election, Southport 46 was to unleash it’s own DJ line up cabinet reshuffle. Friday night Marcia Carr and Ladybugz broke their DJ virginities with a splendid debut mix of broken beats in the Beat Bar, whilst the Funkbase steadily acclimatised with DJ Kilbz & Stretch Taylor’s debut-on sets preluding Angela Johnson’s funktastic live band concert. Travelling through rooms like Dr Who’s tardis, I caught the tail end and applause of Greg Wilson in the Connoisseurs Corner. DJ Cash Money was cutting up tunes skillfully like Zorro’s sword whilst Joey Negro stormed the Powerhouse with War’s Flying Machine. Back to the Funkbase where The Artful Dodger rewound and selected before I spun Hustlers of Culture’s Flipjack, Ballistic Bro’s Blacker Than Thou beats till 7.30. Saturday 1pm - myself, Steve Wren, Bigger and Ronnie Herel dropped 70’s 80’s & 90’s before Mint Condition amazed a packed Powerhouse till 6pm. 10pm Mr Thing and JP rocked the Funkbase box, but duty called at 2.30am as Leroy Burgess and his Soul Survivor dancers (myself, Colin Scott and Akin Shenbanjo), unleashed a relentless 40 minute, including Get Loose, Mainline and Let’s Do It to a crammed Connoisseurs Corner. David Rodigan sang, toasted and skanked through his anticipated roadblocked 2 hour roots rock & reggae session. His showmanship is now cemented in Funkbase folk law. My favourite set was from debut-on Sean P, where myself and Akin danced like we were still behind Leroy Burgess earlier, hustling to Buari’s What’s Happening, Glady’s Knight’s Love Is Always On Your Mind and Benny Golson’s Walkin’ & Stalkin'!! The Powerhouse was jammed still at 7.30am with Kerri Chandler weaving his magic. This Sunday disco finale was the most consistent I’ve witnessed at Southport. From 1pm John Morales and DJ Spen expertly spun Chantel Curtis’ Get Another Love, Rick James Big Time and Jackie Moore’s This Time Baby to a sardine packed room. Linda Clifford gave a performance I’ve waited 32 years to see including Runaway Love. Martha Wash was magnificent and effortlessly bellowed out Strike It Up and It’s Raining Men. Lord Have Mercy.... Jocelyn Brown took us to church and teamed with Martha Wash as they delivered Keep On Jumping which tore the roof off like Parliament!! That’s some of what I caught, so can you imagine what I missed, WELL DONE ALEX & DAVE!!

ing experience as the music ranges from fling foot dancing classics like Rueben Wilson Got To Get Your Own to Sister Sledge Thinking Of You anthems, but the crowd are into it regardless as they just wanna dance. We’re talking up to a thousand people, that some weekenders struggle to get, who are loyal devotee’s in that part of the world. Nice venue choices on site, organised parking and security, reasonable bar prices and top notch sound systems. Shalamar - Circus Tavern Purfleet A Night To Remember when Jeffery Daniels, Howard Hewitt and Caroline ‘Baby Girl” Griffey brought the Soul Train express to Essex. Kenny Thomas and Steve Brickstein amiably showcased their soul wares before Shalamar professionally performed their classics to a capacity crowd. Jeffery did his fitting MJ tribute and Howard serenaded a birthday girl in the audience to the envy of his female admirers. Caroline Griffey sang and worked the stage sensually in her eye-catching sprayed on black leg wear with her heroes she grew up touring with as a child, her Father being the label’s owner, Dick Griffey. Nice friendly and majorly entertaining. Afro Cuban Salsa Weekend Chichester Caron and Ibrahim organised a successful Cuban Salsa weekend spectacular in Chichester April 2010. With live bands, native salsa/jazz dance tutors and classes throughout the entire weekend, as well as two rooms, a soul room and salsa after parties, a mixed aged gathering lost enough pounds to contribute to our credit crunch economy. Anna and myself sheepishly took part in some classes, only to admire the commitment and enthusiasm of both teachers and pupils. Lovely friendly people, good vibe and amazing live professional dance routines helped make this an event easy to praise. N’Dambi Jazz Cafe 31 March 2010 Simon Precilla is to be congratulated on his first major promotion at an established venue, which also showcased Fae Simon who blessed the packed by 9pm audience with 4 songs receiving deserved accolade in return. N’Dambi stomp bucked and danced like the Crusaders through a blistering set of her old and new material to rapturous applause. How she did that in those heels I don’t know but after the show she graciously did a meet and greet, signing CD’s and memorabilia till the Jazz Cafe closed. Blackstreet were in the house and were first in the queue to meet an excited N’Dambi. She certainly left the audience a Day Dream from an outstanding performance. Fitzroy

We Love Soul @ Hidden Club Tinworth Street Vauxhall SE1 Veteran dancer and promoter Tony Houston does what it says on the tin in supplying 3 rooms of Soul based music from the 70‘s to 2010. Colourful radio dj’s supplied the 80‘s soul, swing and 90’s beats, whilst myself, Colin Scott, Bobby (Zoo) Carl Z and Sticko Za Za held fort in the 70’ & 80’s Jazz Funk & Boogie room. Paul Trouble Anderson, Funki P & Co spun some robust 120 bmp soulful house in room 3 and this reigned from 10pm 7am. Parking’s good and close by and with Soul Networks Vivy B on the next Bank Holiday in May, we gonna party hardy people like Act One. QDOS(Civic Hall Grays Essex) Terry & Neil, the nucleus of QDOS, invited me to spin at 2 of their Bank Holiday jams in Essex. I must say it was a refresh-

BLACKSTREET Wow, what a night! There were mini explosions, on and off the stage, as each of the group were introduced. They appeared in their white outfits from underneath black cloaks and the crowd went mad. They hyped up the crowd from the word go and we knew we were in for a great night. They sang eveything: Let’s Stay In Love, No Diggity, I Wanna Be Your Man, Fix, Buy Me Love; they had girls from the audience on stage trying to impress them with their dancing. Teddy Riley sang a compilation of his New Jack Swing hits followed by a Michael Jackson tribute supported by an amazing young London dance troup that had just hours to rehearse. I am not sure if Blackstreet anticipated the crowd’s amazing reaction to them but you could see they just didn’t want it to end. Anna

ROB HARDT How old were you when you first heard and became addicted to Soul music in Germany? I was born in 1968 so aged 8 years old my sister used to play Motown records and Marvin Gaye was a big influence as was Earth Wind & Fire. My brother was into funk like Parliament so we had a nice mixture. Apart from radio and disco venues, what established live acts did you get to see passing through on a European tour? I was lucky to live in Brim Haven which is surrounded by the US army and the officer’s clubs had artists like The Brothers Johnson and Zapp, and seeing Roger’s talk box live influenced me. We saw these in 4-500 people venues and as a German it was strange to sit down and watch a show but I managed to sneak in around the 80‘s when they entertained the U S army. How did you manifest to writing, producing, remixing and eventually liaising with Chaka Khan, Keith Sweat, Roger Troutman and Zapp? I did a lot of remixes in the 90’s in Germany with my partner for Warners and Reprise who needed European mixes for Chaka Khan, like Never Miss a Water with Meshelle N’Decello. Ok I have a promo of that but it doesn’t mention that. Actually the German company didn’t like our mixes and had to get in touch with Reprise to prove what they got the money for. Reprise called us and said they loved it and couldn’t understand why the German company was not happy with it and released it in the USA, UK and everywhere; it was quite a success and went bill board top 40! This led to Roger Troutman sending us “Living For The City”, one of the last recordings he did before he got shot. We did Twisted for Keith Sweat and German mixes of Paid In Full For Eric B & Rakim, as they sometimes wanted local mixes to be released only in Germany and not for the US or UK. Prior to this, did you Dj at all, as you went from loving the music to making it and learnt to play an instrument? I DJ’d but don’t call myself a DJ. Aged 12 I fell in love with the synthesizers after seeing Herbie Hancock and begged my Mum for one. She got me a Marimba with no plug or electronics, so being frustrated my Dad got me an expensive synthesizer and I taught myself. I’m an ok keyboard player as I played in a band and realis34 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

ing you get more shows if you make a record I unintentionally became a producer to promote my own band. This helped with drum programming so I was able to establish myself and prefered being in the studio than being on stage. How did you and Frank Ryle meet and start bouncing ideas off each other? That was through Donald McCullum when Frank wrote for an on-line column and gave a nice review on the Dome single I produced. I contacted him to say thanks, which led to us communicating and he started Cool Million in Denmark without me. We met when he asked me to work as a producer. How did you manage to get the attention of the Soul Togetherness crew and get Naughty Girl on the album and the Great Tom Moulton to add his musical majesty to it? With my deepest respect, Frank reviewed Soul Togetherness and had showed the track to Ralph Tee who was up for it as a music lover. I made contact with Tom Moulton through My Space and he wrote back saying he’d love to remix our stuff. I was so honoured that he wanted to do it. He gave us good advice about our music and is the nicest person I’ve met in the business. He and John Morales are working with us and Cool Million, so we have two living legends that we appreciate. With the deepest respect for them, we want to update the influence of the 80’s but with a modern twist. Being a music fan first, I recognise a familiar essence and formula in how your projects are produced. There is a very strong 80’s Prelude, Jam & Lewis, Loose Ends presence on both Cool Million albums which, the term I don’t particularly like, ‘Modern Soul’ enthusiasts embrace emphatically. The weekenders, soul compilations and various UK venues seem to champion this vein of soul on it’s dance floors. Were you aiming specifically at that market genre or did it just happen? It just happened as I was confused to hear the term Modern Soul. As a German I questioned how 30 year old music could be modern soul and then I realised it’s Modern after the Northern soul. In the late 70’s and 80’s I was on the dance floor dancing to this music and I wanted to make music that was missing from today, which was the fun element. We meet friends in our apartments, warm up with good music and then hit the clubs. This brings the memories back for me and the people we speak to on Facebook but now it’s happening in 2010.
