CHIC Nile Rodgers of

Before CHIC, how were you involved in the Sesame Street Band and later with Bernard Edwards as part of New York City’s “I’m Doing Fine Now” backing band line up and later recruit Tony Thompson? The Sesame Street Band was my first real professional paid tax information job. It was a long running job with one of my oldest friends Fonzi Thornton and Luther Vandross. Fonzi replaced Luther and I replaced Carlos Alomar as they both did the “Young American” for David Bowie. The start of the Big Apple Band happened when Bernard got the job as music director for the New York City group and we’d become friends from doing pick up gigs at the weekends. When they auditioned guitar players, Bernard got that job for me and we stayed with New York City for around 2 years. In 1973 when the Jackson 5 were doing a world tour we were the opening act on the J5 American tour. We did our last show in London and whilst staying in Bayswater my hotel room was broken into and my passport stolen. It was New York City’s last tour date so they returned to the US and broke up. I remained in London to get a new passport. My girlfriend at the time worked and knew everyone on the cool London club circuit and took me to see her favourite band, a new group called Roxy Music. Ironically they were playing at the Roxy which had a hip well to do crowd. I thought it would be cool to do this in black music so when I got back I spoke with Bernard and we auditioned for our band The Big Apple Band. Tony Thompson auditioned and I knew him as an exceptional jazz drummer from working with him in Persian/Middle Eastern pick up bands like Jamshid Al Murad and Grugosh. He had just left Labelle and his audition just blew me away, although Bernard didn’t like him as he overplayed. 04 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

You were with The Black Panthers and experienced industrial discrimination when embracing Black Funk rock groups like The Boys and Allah and The Knife Wielding Punks. How did these varying racist episodes help to make you determined and strong? When I was a musician in the Panthers I didn’t know Bernard yet as I was in a different band; a political rock fusion one called New World Rising. When Bernard and I were experimenting band names coming from the downtown New York rock scene, there was a powerful movement called punk. This predated mid 70‘s Punk rock in late 68 on the “Velvet Underground” movement, I was in a band called “Street Punk” in 68. There was a band called “Teenage Jesus and the Jerks” and I thought the name was cool, so working with many middle eastern bands, we went for “Allah and the Knife Wielding Punks”. I spoke to some Muslim friends who said that’s a blasphemous name so we quickly changed it and didn’t gig under that name. Leaving the Panthers left a very deep scar in my heart as when I joined it was near the end when the FBI Cointel program was in full effect. Having infiltrated the organisation, they set up false scenarios and fake crimes to which they had immunity when others didn’t in the early planning stages. In today’s world it would be considered entrapment, although it was found to be illegal, but the FBI had this autonomy and the repercussions were severe. I was purged from the Black Panther Party 21 after I questioned the orders of one of them who I later found out was an FBI informant. In a way thank god for that intervention as it inadvertently saved me. And that’s the real story.

‘What’s a boy to do..?’ I could start by talking about the weather, but that’d be more than a touch obvious. I could throw in a few lines about the World Cup, but it was a long time ago and we were rubbish, so what’s the point!? Sometimes starting this page is easy, unfortunately today’s not one of those days... ‘Getting on with it...’ These are good times and I shouldn’t forget it, after all, I’m surrounded by the evidence! Richard Earnshaw’s long awaited album ‘In Time’ is finally here and cor gawd blimey was it worth the wait! Asides from the stunning title track, there’s ‘My Door Is Open’ featuring Carleen Anderson and ‘Rise’ (which illuminated some of the recent Surgery sessions) with Ursula Rucker’s too smooth poetic vocal delivery. The quality throughout this album just has to be heard to be believed. The word glorious springs to mind, but I’m saving that for Jocelyn Brown’s ‘Worthy’ which absolutely rocks-my-socks! Rewinding a couple of months, there’s Quentin Harris’ 2nd album ‘Sacrifice’ and as a huge QT fan there’s a lot to appreciate. But when it comes to ‘Don’t U Worry’ featuring Georgia Cee I could crumble, it’s one of the most beautiful and uplifting dance tracks of 2010. Something I could also attach that label to is Jephte Guillaume’s remix of Monday Michiru’s ‘Weak’. Once again I can’t help but mention MM as she returns with a very tidy collection of remixes from 2008’s ‘Nexus’ album entitled ‘Alter Ego’. Rather than remix every track, the focus is on re-working the best tracks, so it goes without saying ‘Sands Of Time’ is included and Soulfeenix adds a more consistent dance floor feel to one of my faves without losing any of the joyousness. ‘And it’s goodnight from him...’ Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Regular listeners to the ‘Jump Start’ will know that more often than not, we’ll chuck in something just because we can and ‘Ronnie’s Groove’ by the Library Vultures is one of

those. All I can describe it as is a breakbeat version of the theme to The Two Ronnies and it’s great! In a similar vein is Funky Destination’s ‘Como Musica’, it’s smoother, more dancefloor friendly than most breakbeat and that is why you need it. Also to pop on the wants list is The Funk League’s ‘You’re Gonna Learn’. It’s a fantastic piece Hip Hop that rolls, has plenty of attitude and is guaranteed to get your head nodding. ‘Stop me if I’m boring you...’ As opening gambits go, there’s one filled with danger. These could already be revving your engine, but I couldn’t forgive myself if I failed to mention them. Having surfaced 2 years ago, Sunlightsquare’s version of Stevie’s ‘Pastime Paradise’ is finally here on 7” and continuing the Latin flavour is the welcome return of the Una Mas Trio with new remixes of ‘Mas Y Mas’ & ‘Balkum’. Shuya Okino’s take on the Rose Royce classic ‘Still In love’ has been getting more than its rightful quota of airplay, but as it features Navasha Daya on vocals it’s automatically a ‘must have’ and as the original is one of my all time greats, I’m biased. ‘I expected him to be taller...’ Lots of things to do throughout the next 2 months and asides from the regular catch-ups at Russell’s, there’s the launch of Chocolate Chip @ The Heist in Brighton 06-08-10, the East Coast Soul Boat Cruise

which takes place on 14-08-10 and the very exciting ‘Something For The Weekend’ @ Henry’s on the 21-08-10. And if I don’t catch you at any of those, no doubt we’ll see you at the Soul Survivors Award Ceremony and 4th Birthday Party, which gives me a chance to say congratulations to Fitzroy & Anna and thanks for letting me waffle on like I do. ;-) Ciao for Now. PHILIP BAI LEY of Earth Wind & Fire speaks to Jazz FM’s Mike Vitti Just tell us little bit about this tour; I saw you in Holland at the North Sea Jazz. We’re almost at the end of our European tour and festival dates. It was something we wanted to spread outside the States and we’re having a great time. Earth Wind & Fire Shows are legendary and always extravagant. I’ve noticed, having seen you a few times over the years, it’s less about the showbiz and more about the music; is that a fair thing to say? Yes that’s fair; in the past with the flying and disappearing concepts, quite frankly it became costly but it also became a point of no return as what were we going to do next? One thing you can’t get tired of is perfecting the craft of giving people great performances and sharpening your own craft. We try to make that first and foremost, not to say that we won’t return to some of the crazier things we used to do live but right now we’re focusing on crazy performances. Your audiences have matured along with the band who don’t really care about that, they wanna hear you sing with slick performances and they get that with you, Verdine and Ralph and so on, so the newer addition to the group, David Whitworth, who’s singing now instead of Maurice. I love the way you interchange on stage, one minute you, then Ralph, then your son playing percussion and the movement is so slick. You’re celebrating 40 years of Earth Wind & Fire with your new Greatest Hits CD out now. Is it something that comes naturally or do you still work on it? We still work on it but some things are natural. It’s when you get to a place that you don’t have to think about; that’s when I change things up and make sure there’s an element of thinking. We listen to our live performances with our sound guys making sure they are in check and that the audience is gonna get a better audio vision on a higher level of what’s happening on stage. It’s basic things like 14 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

playing together and letting the show come to us and not repeating the last performance. We don’t talk to the audience about this but they can tell and appreciate this as we’re not phony. I know Maurice isn’t involved with the live element any more but is he still a director of Earth Wind & Fire; does that make sense? He hasn’t been a part of the touring band for almost 20 years or longer, but any time we do an Earth Wind & Fire song, Maurice is a part of it as he is the conceptualiser, the founder, co-writer of the band. We have been successful for over 25 years keeping the brand intact and lifting the integrity of it and upholding what we started out. We’ve been touring longer without him than with him so the 40yrs is not only a testament to his work as the founding father but ours over the past 20 to uphold that legacy. And you’ve got Verdine on stage keeping you in check. No doubt. I call him “the energy”. We go to the same physician cause I want some of what he’s got. He’s as crazy as ever. Yep he loves what he does and is definitely the inspiration in terms of attitude and excitement...he’s always on the edge. Did it take you a while to find David Whitworth, who sings Maurice’s parts, as I find it amazing how his voice really blends? It really does; Tig, as we call him, doesn’t take the job for granted. He studies the music and what me and Maurice did. When he sings “Lovers Holiday” or any other ballad or anything he’s giving, we say wow “Where’s Maurice” as he’s really studied it. I’ve got a thing about percussion I play a bit at home but you still play; do you still enjoy that aspect?

Most definitely, I’m probably a musician first. People may or may not know that I started playing drums first in the 4th grade through college as a percussionist through symphony and session work and moved to LA to study with private teachers. I always kid with Harvey Mason to this day that I always wanted to be him looking at all the CTI stuff with his name on playing timpani's and timbales and all that kind of stuff. You kinda like the jazz thing? Yeah that’s definitely my first love then singing took over once I was in Earth Wind & Fire as it was obviously gonna be my role and I focus myself on that. That’s why I love doing my solo stuff; I can concentrate and stretch out. We should talk about the Phil Collins thing. Two great drummers but neither play drums on the song - that’s quite crazy. There’s something about drummers and singing. Teddy Pendergrass, Jeffery Osbourne, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder all play drums and I guess we know how to put the lyrics in the track. A lot of things go unsaid.

Nearly 40 years wow; have you seen the compilation of the latest Greatest hits? Yeah Sony has put out another Earth Wind & Fire compilation to celebrate our 40th year anniversary in lieu of us coming out to perform the tour. I’m glad cause from my favourite album All N All, it’s got Jupiter and I really love Runnin’ in particular the Hollywood mix. It comes out 19th July but I haven’t heard it myself so not sure which mixes but I’m really excited about being here and we shouldn’t leave it so long; it should be part of the regular rotation of our touring schedule that we make it back here every year. So call your local promoters saying we want Earth Wind & Fire here! Philip Bailey it’s been an absolute pleasure and honour talking to you today about Earth Wind & Fire. Thank you.

Record reviews “A Complete Introduction To Sugar Hill Records” (Universal/Castle Music) Just as the “Disco Sucks” revolution created havoc in the summer of 1979 a new musical insurgence on USA Urban Underground came in the guise of Hip Hop & Rap, and championing that sound was the Sylvia Robinson’s Sugar Hill label. Included in this package is a 52 paged historical documentation, 4 CD’s and 46 tracks including Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rappers Delight”, Positive Force’s “We Got The Funk”, Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message” and West Street Mob’s body rocker “Lets Dance”. Utilising some of the most famous breaks here the Maze influenced “Do You Wanna Rock”, West Street Mob’s “Apache” sample on “Breakdance” and the Electro boogie monster “Scorpio”. Older ol skool B Boys & Fly girls see if ya can still fit into ya breaking gear and consume this limited edition package. Out Now. Fitzroy

Pulp Fusion (The Return Of The Original Ghetto Jazz & Funk Classics) Harmless A double CD packed with breaks and jazz funk influences and samples like Eddie Russ’s “Lope Song” (YD’s “Get Together”), Last Poet’s “It’s A Trip” (Jestofunk’s “Precious Love”) to Pleasure’s “2 For 1” and Nathan Davis’s “Tragic Magic”. A personal surprise was Gene Ammon’s “Jungle Strut”. Fast and furious, funky like a junkie, mellow as a cello or jazz with pizzaz. With in this line up includes Deodato’s “Superstrut”, Headhunter’s “If You Got It” Patrice Rushen’s “Let Your Heart Be Free” and Joe Bataan’s “La Botella”. They’ll be no sign of Uma or John T on the dance floor to these babies. Fitzroy Philly ReGrooved Tom Moulton Remixes (Harmless) Disco remixer and producer anthologist Tom Moulton has added his golden midas touch to 12 Philly influenced grooves with some extra instrumentation. First Choice “Let Us Entertain You”, The Delfonics “I Told You So”, Ultra High Frequency version of ”We’re On The Right Track” and Finished Touch’s “Second Best” are the successful victims of this experiment. The amalgamated talent of Ron Baker, Ron Kersey, Norman Harris, Bobby Eli, Larry Washington, Roland Chambers and Vincent Montana’s musicianship is to be even further admired on these versions. As a lover of orchestration I find this refreshing really, showing that good quality music can survive a 40 year cycle. Fitzroy Earth Wind & Fire (The Greatest Hits) Sony A band that once had saxophonist Ronnie Laws in their line up, provide some of their 40 year catalogue of hits. Universal and commercial disco classics “Let’s Groove”, “Boogie Wonderland” and “September” are cemented amongst the 17 track CD and the mellower mid tempo grooves “Fantasy”, ”Star” and “Serpentine Fire” embrace their Egyptology ideology compositions. The funk tracks with jazzy brass fever attack include “Jupiter”, “Shining Star” and the cosmic “In The Stone”. Also noted for their beautiful ballads enjoy “After The Love Has Gone”, “That The Way Of The World” and the impeccable “Reasons”. I was lucky enough to get tickets for the 02 concert OMG how excited was I? Fitzroy Incognito - Transatlantic R.P.M (Dome) Bluey’s next challenge is to enlist a world cup all star squad, including Chaka Khan, Mario Biondi, Ursula Rucker, Motown’s sensual minister Leon Ware, Maysa, Joy Rose, Tony Momrelle and Christian Urich to succeed where England failed recently in South Africa. Beautifully written, performed and produced there is not one duff track. Chaka sings like her early ABC Rufus days on “The Song” and Boz Scaggz’s “Lowdown” with Mario Biondi, and Leon Ware oozes on “Line In The Sand” whilst Joy Rose is unreal on the retro memoir evoking “1975”. “Colibre” -esque instrumental, “Expresso Madureira” and “Life Ain’t Nothing But A Good Thing” are the jazz funk fusion dancers on this brilliant eclectic 16 track cd that is a testament to Bluey’s “EWF” concept approach Incognito style. Gerade Frisina “Join The Dance” Ishtar Music enthusiast DJ and co founder of Ishtar Gerade Frisina arranges another classic Italian Jazz CD with the crisp production of Prestige, Milestone and Bluenote all rolled into one. Easy listening as well as jazz danceable, listen to vocal cuts like “I’m Gonna Go Fishin” feat Italian songstress Francesca Sortino and “Will You Walk A Little” by UK’s jazz veteran Norma Winstone Faster previewed on Gilles Peterson’s Radio 1’s “Worldwide” show.” The instrumentals include “Hi Hat”, “Titoro” and “Joy Shout” which are a mixture of Afro Cuban and straight ahead jazz with a Cal Tjader resonance. Can’t go wrong if jazz is your thing! Fitzroy The Drizabone Soul Family - All The Way (Dome) Two decades after Real Love and Brightest Star graced our ears the new improved and re named Drizabone Soul Family expand that quality of Domes repertoire that the label’s fans are accustomed to. With two new female vocalists, soul legend Keni Stevens and surviving member Billy Freeman the album has already surpassed expectations. The Northern/Motown Soul influenced “Don’t Break My Heart” and single “ I Fell Apart” has gained as much regular airplay on national as specialist radio. The formula of “No More Sorrow”, “ Hit The Spot”and the 2010 version of the anthemic “Real Love” will be championed on the new fangled two stepping soul arenas like Blackpool’s “Luxury Soul” and “Seductive Soul”. Nice clean and crisply produced this could be one of Domes best sellers in 2010. Fitzroy A Complete Introduction To Disco - Various Artist 1970-1980 (Universal) Classic cheesy or commercial we all embraced Disco in some shape or form or at least frequented them and danced ourselves dizzy like Liquid Gold! This 4 CD package includes all of the above from George McCrea’s “Rock Your Baby” pt’s 1 & 2 fused together to Eddie Kendrick’s “Girl I Need A Change Of Mind” on CD 1’s “First Steps”. Cd 2’s “Happy People” delivers Crown Heights Affair’s “Dreaming A Dream” and The Original’s “Down To Love Town”. CD3’s “Disco In Excelsis” hosts Cerrone’s “Love In C Minor” and Luther Vandross on Bionic Boogie’s “Risky Changes”. “Take Me Home” CD is probably the strongest line up with a few samples like Dan Hartman’s “Vertigo/Relight My Fire” Carrie Lucas’s “Dance With You” and classic disco shakers Tamiko Jones’ “Can’t Live Without Your Love”, Gino Soccio’s “Dancer” and Donna Summers’ “Last Dance”. Like undisputed truth c’mon y’all “Lets Go Down To The Disco”. Fitzroy

Leela James - My Soul (Stax) Like N’Dambi and Syleena Johnson, Leela James is one of the new established generation soul singers who hail from the Deep South of America and who can eat, walk, talk and sleep the “blues”. Now on Stax this tiny, sexy and demure soul-stress serenades with a voice of atomic and explosive decibels. Her southern sound opens up effortlessly with “I Ain’t New To This” and “So Cold”. There is something for everyone like the Marvin “Trouble Man” influenced “Party All Night”, The JB “It’s A Man’s World” Mr Incredible, Ms Unforgettable feat Raheem DeVaughn and the Staple Singers’ “Let’s Do It Again” esq tell “Me You Love Me”. Her 60’s styled “Let It Roll” is a catchy number for those who like the “Northern” twist to their soul. Real Soul for those who feel Soul!! Fitzroy Happy Days (Volumes 1-4) Original Disco Soul Funk & Jazz (Sony) Sept 2010 Terry Farley and Dave Jarvis convey their personal 70‘s teenage disco club education and inspiration with a biography of each of these 4 CDs compiled lovingly from the vaults of BMG and it’s affiliated RCA, Sony, TSOP, CBS, Arista, Buddah, Epic, Sussex and CTI labels. Enjoy EWF’s “Runnin”, Bruce Johnston’s “Pipe Line” and The Main Ingredient's “Happiness Is Just Around The Bend”. Embrace Lonnie Liston Smith’s, “Space Princess”, GQ’s “Make My Dream A Reality” and Lalo Schifrin’s “Jaws”. Hear the Basement Jaxx sampled Locksmith’s “Far Beyond”, Johnny Taylor’s “Disco Lady”, Rodney Franklin’s “I Like The Music-Make It Hot” and Milt Jackson’s jazzy“Sunflower”. With Eddie Murphy’s “Boogie In Your Butt” they have unearthed some in house golden nuggets from the same RCA/BMG umbrella with a nudge reminiscent of the “Rare” series Dez Parkes complied in 1987. Fitzroy Vick Lavenders- Sophisticado Nice to hear some musical experimentation with Latin soul, synth, boogie courtesy of Vick Lavender. “Another Girl” feat David Glen is a melody with lush rising strings, nice key changes and teasing guitar riffs. “Kaylynns Thing” is a more downtempo funky broken beat cut with spacey eeriness, haunting grand piano and hammond organ ripples. “Chicago Chase” is an instrumental laced with synths, vibes piano, whilst “After Party” feat RJ Green is more simplistic with Patrick Adams disco synths running rife over the three mixes of “Chicago Samba” they’re all as good as are the two alternatives of “Ella”. Vick Lavender brings his Cuban flavour like the cigars his country is famous for. Fitzroy Backbeats - Various Artist (Harmless Records) There are 10 releases in the Ian Dewhirst BackBeats comps and something pretty much for everyone. You can dance around ya handbags in ya flares or ya disco platforms to Northern Soul, Windy City Soul, Philly Disco, Soulful Boogie, 80’s Nightlife to House Fever classics spanning over 40 years. With Mr Mastercuts encyclopedic history there is a brief biog with each cd colluding with each appropriate scene or era the music derives from. In conjunction with Harmless there’s too much to mention individually but like Bobby T, check out the grooves...they’re sure to make you move!! Fitzroy So Strong - Jonathan Butler - June 2010 (Rendesvous) Jonathan Butler who hails from Cape Town South Africa cut his first album back in 1987. His latest cd is simply a lovely cd.... every track is a winner in my book....opening up with title track "So Strong"...4 minutes of a melodic kinda steppers groove. The album contains 4 instrumental tracks which showcase Jonathans great guitar work along with a tight horn section making for a very polished soulful jazzy groove. Track 4 "Factual" a lovely rich r& b sound with lovely vocals and track 9 (my favourite!) "Color Green" has just amazing lyrcs. Track 11 is a fantastic cover of Johnny Nash’s "I can see clearly now" with a gospel feel to it. So to sum it all up in one sentence...."a feel good cd to just sit back and relax..put ya feet up and enjoy"...you will not be disappointed!!! Dean Freeman (Spain) Saravah Soul - Cultura Impura (Tru Thoughts) July 5th 2010 'Cultura Impura' is the latest offering from this high-energy half British half Brazilian fusion band. Saravah Soul have once again concocted a spicy cocktail of tropical sounds and rhythms. The ingredients includes Afoxé and Berimbau from Brazil, Highlife from Ghana, Afrobeat from Nigeria, supplemented with a subtle dose of old school Soul. Imagine Fela Kuti and James Brown jamming together at the Rio Carnival if you will! The standout tune for me is the funky, horn driven reworking of Jimi Hendrix's Fire. A respectable tribute to the legendary guitarist, is a future classic in its own right. The boys from Saravah are renowned for their electrifying live performances. Catch them on their current UK tour, to treat yourself to a copy of this album! Mr Boogie (Soulsa) 18 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Fitzroy talks to

KENI BURKE

Like “My Way”s association with Frank Sinatra, “Ooh Child” is The 5 Stairstep’s signature theme. The song, sampled by Tupac for his seminal “Keep Ya Head Up” and featured in Boy In The Hood film, is part of the landscape of the 70’s racial and social struggle within Black Americans. What’s the story of you recording it? No doubt one of the most important songs of the early 70’s era, we were with Buddah records working with a young writer called Stan Vincent. We were going into a different more pop direction at the time. It wasn’t the first choice as a single, it was the B side of a Beatles song “Dear Prudence”. One of the Philadelphia DJ’s happened to flip the record and start playing it and it became successful. Back in those days it wasn’t planned but in the industry there’s a saying you can’t stop a hit record. It was the most exciting time for me and our family as it was our first crossover hit. How did the Impressions, Fred Cash and Curtis Mayfield scenario unfold, leading to you becoming signed to Curtis’s Windy City label? My family and I entered and won a talent show at the Regal Theatre in Chicago, equivalent to the Apollo in New York. Fred Cash was a neighbour who lived 6 doors down from us. My father invited him over to hear us sing. The Impressions were the biggest group in Chicago and we were huge fans so you can imagine our excitement. We sang 16 bars of “World Of Fantasy” and Fred Cash stopped us and called Curtis Mayfield and made arrangements for us to meet him within the hour. It was so surreal.

20 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

When the group broke up in the early 70’s and reformed in 76 as The Stairsteps, how instrumental was the collaboration of you signing to the late Beatles George Harrison’s Dark Horse label via an intro from Billy Preston who produced the “2nd Resurrection” album? I’d been playing bass touring with Billy Preston for a couple of years and George Harrison, being a friend of Billy’s, came to visit Billy’s ranch in California and I’d recorded four tracks with a band I had at Curtis Mayfield studio. I played them to George who was looking to sign acts to his Dark Horse label. George liked them and Billy suggested to do it with the family which made perfect sense. I put the deal together and Billy was involved on the production but to be honest Billy was the producer politically and we produced it with Billy playing on it. From that versatile album featuring the instrumental “Salaam”, ”Pasado”, covered later by The Pockets and “From Us To You”, my personal favourite is “Throwin’ Stones Atcha”. What was the story behind the album’s creation? It was just myself and my talented brothers. We wanted equal collaboration to give everyone a chance to showcase their talent and skills, my brother Clarence wrote “Throwing Stones Atcha”. Clarence and James wrote “Pasado”. We had a great time doing our own thing having grown and matured.

Out The Box

......its not all four to the floor you know! Words DJ Marcia Carr

No sooner had I been raving about London club nights being stalwarts of flying the flag (in the last issue) for underground dance and all things electronic or jazzy, things are turned on its head, with some events falling off the map altogether, while others have reluctantly taken sabbaticals. Those still hanging on in there – nights like Frequencies (hosted by Broadcite and yours truly), Tribe, Deep Cover, Boglewaltz, Inspiration Information with new host Jimbo (he runs Groove Sanctuary at Madame JoJo’s) replacing Phil Asher, SkinTite, Playback and others plus venues such as Plastic People, East Village, Cargo to name but a few shall all continue to surge ahead to bring you the best in musicality on offer in the coming months – with your loyal support. Onto reviews now, here’s a taste of what’s good for you and what you might hear on speaker boxes at certain venues, if you haven’t already. This Dave Jones cut in a Maddslinky guise is his first 12” single from his impending autumn album for Brighton’s Tru Thoughts label. MS is on form with more coil action than Slinky in Toy Story with more studio trickery than David Blaine. Morphing genres as he does – this reggaefied bass line piece spearheaded by the sorely underrated soul sojourner Omar whose voice is played about with sensibility; this piano scored Original being a fine example of a summertime tune for carnival and beyond. It’s all out funkiness “to the ladies dem” with a chirpy Toddla T remix, while a 4 x 4 mix by Simbad will suit Broken Beat enthusiasts. The retro UK garage input from MJ Cole is actually refreshing and the percussive house dressage from Atjazz adds permanent class on this UK anthem to be. A distinguished name to lovers of soul, jazz and house music, vibes man and singer Roy Ayers has a new single with Brighton based Julian Bendall’s outfit Bah Samba. ‘Positive Vibes’ on Favouritizm Music rekindles some of Ayers distinct flair shown in his work for Polydor records, revamped with ease for 2010. The Original Boogie Mix is sweet and very playable – along with soulful house rubs from Sean McCabe and Andy Ward providing durable, glossy variables of Rhodes keys, funky b lines, guitar hooks, bouncing beats and swanky keys atop lashings of vibes. Contrastingly, the Super-Phonics mix is a balance of soul with the presence of heavy beats reduced, resulting in a more LP style mix. An unsuspecting Afrikanz On Mars mix by Ashley Beedle shows off sub bass chords dressed in layers of Afro percussion, panning of vibes, echoes and sonically good effects sounds with a subtle tribal essence. The 7-inch ‘It’s The Weekend’ (on Germany’s SedSoul records) original by illustrious US singer/songwriter Leroy Burgess, is his latest single taken from the Throwback Volume II: Sugar Hill 83-86 – a mere snatch of his vast catalogue of work. So, waste no time in bagging yourself theses digital only stylish remixes. Seductive Soul’s label boss Rob Hardt ups the energy with heavy strings and whirling synths on his boogie style turnout, while UK jocks Johnny Montana and Craig Stewart use strings and soft percussion on their smooth house mix. Patchworks remix says a lot with its acoustic guitar strings, double bass line ripping through some rhythmic disco inserts keeping the tempo more up and suitable for collectors and music lovers alike and is my pick. Byron Stingily was once a prolific member of the nineties Chicagoan house act Ten City, who all had successful runs with at least three major labels but went their separate ways around 1998, leaving Stingily to take on the baton to parade his vocal prowess on many a house tune ever since – the other Byron (Burke) also achieved some solo success, but short lived. Stingily applies his vocals to ‘No Mind Games’ by house giants Terry Hunter and Kenny Dope - for Kenny’s Ill Friction imprint. Flaunting punctuated short, churchy organ chord stabs, adding simple drum licks with a strong swing, blissful harmonies and Byron’s wide ranging voice – the cut is almost resplendent of the vibe of ‘What Ever Makes You Happy’. For the party hard who want to keep their soul intact this is a soon to be classic! Event reviews/letters

The American Queens Of Soul Friday 16 July @ Indig02 There have been few occasions that a line up such as this has been shown and we were not about to be disappointed. Jean Carne was the first to perform with "Was that all it was" the perfect way to start this impressive trio of soul royalty. Jean still sounds amazing and still has a rare enthusiasm to perform to perfection and connects with her audience with ease. "Don't let it go to your head", "My Love Don't come easy" "Free Love" and "We got some catchin up to do" were some of the many songs performed on the night. Shirley Jones was next to take the stage and was performing under the "Jones Girls" name, Shirley's voice was always the strongest amongst the trio and began with "This feelings killing me" proving her voice is still as wonderful as ever "Children of the night", "You're gonna make me love somebody else" and a new song from her forthcoming album "Feels like Heaven" show that Shirley has longevity and talent to sustain her solo career for many years to come. She ended her set with the crowd pleaser "Nights over Egypt" which left the audience happy at her great performance. Ms Gwen McCrae was the closing act of the evening and did a wonderful job performing such hits as "Rocking Chair", 90% of you is me" "All this love that I'm giving" "Keep the fires burning" and "Funky Sensation" and even a version of her ex Mr George McCrae's "Rock ya baby" made her performance so enjoyable. A great evening's entertainment at the Indigo2. Omar @ The Jazz Cafe 9 July 2010 It is always good to see Omar perform in an intimate venue like the Jazz Cafe and tonight was no exception. Showcasing tracks from his forthcoming album "The Man", Omar performed the title track "The Man", and "Ordinary Day", which he dedicated to his beautiful daughters. The album due for imminent release, indicates this could be his best to date. Omar sang all our favourite tunes with this slick and tight band, many of whom are artists themselves. "Music", "Outside", and "Be Thankful" Omar's version of the William DeVaughan classic which he duetted with Angie Stone, was ably assisted by his sister, who easily did a fantastic job. Omar also did his version of the Jones Girls anthem "Nights Over Egypt" and of course used his amazing keyboard skills to give us a truly unforgettable version which will hopefully feature on an album someday. The evening was ended with a solo version of "Little Boy" and then the entire band came together to perform "It's so", a great performance by one of Britain's most talented musicians and songwriter (and not to mention actor as well!). The Wonder of Stevie Wonder Hard Rock Calling Hyde Park 26 June 2010 Stevie Wonder was the closing act at this Festival and there could be no better way to end any musical event then with my musical hero. Stevie has long been "the one" I have always wanted to see, a fan from an early age, I have always been in awe of such an icon. When Stevie appeared on stage and I got my first glimpse of him I was so overcome with emotion I started to cry, totally unexpected and uncontrollable and was something I have never done with any other artist , but that was the amaz 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

ing effect Stevie had on me and most of this vast audience too. Stevie's performance was mesmerising from start to finish and encompassed his entire musical career including classics old and new including "We can work it out","If you really love me", "Higher Ground","Ribbon in the sky" and also included a Michael Jackson tribute "Human Nature", His two hour set could not include everything, but there was a song for everyone, he also showed what a musical talent he is as well and can play virtually any musical instrument a rare talent that only Stevie has been blessed with. We were left with "Another Star" which was performed to perfection by Stevie and his brilliant and loyal band members. A perfect way to end a beautiful summers day, and one I will never forget. June Furlong Seductive Soul @ The Cheshire Lounge On Saturday, 19 June 2010 we were blessed with a visit ‘up north’ of Fitzroy and in the words of Frankie Valli “O What A Night”. At around 11.30pm the place seemed relatively empty, but many people started to arrive (as is the norm) lulled by the great music played by Chris Priestley. At midnight Fitzroy took over and performed a brilliant two hour set playing very danceable classic soulful tunz with everybody dancing in every conceivable space. Fitzroy was followed by the great Jim Hargreaves until around 3ish. I trust Fitzroy enjoyed his visit to give us a sample of what they play down Sarf and helped us enjoy yet another special night at the North West’s premier soul night. Russell Ashton The Filthy Six - Queen of Hoxton 10th June 2010 Last year when I reviewed this band I mentioned that they were about to embark on a debut album for Acid Jazz. This was the launch party for said album where the band proceeded to play all the tracks sequentially. In front of a dancing, expectant and appreciative crowd they began their showcase with the driving brass coated ‘Lick Du Jour’ with the organ displaying the band’s funky sixties intent. ‘The Fingerbite’ allowed an initial respite before the popular ‘Get Carter’ created more dance action. The Filthy’s own jolly instrumental version of Amy Winehouse ‘Rehab’ followed the moody ‘The Take’, Nick Etwell’s calming atmospheric trumpet on ‘This’ transported you to sixties black and white period ’Blue Donald’ continued this theme then ‘The Catwalk’ sounded just like the type of tune cool cats would strut their stuff to in jazz clubs a few decades ago. The funky tempo returned with the guitar licking and organ lead ‘Mozambique’ with the introduction reminiscent of Georgie Fame’s ‘Yeh yeh'.

What was deemed to be the penultimate tune of the night the mid paced ‘Three foot stumble’ ushered in the gospel tinged ‘knockout’ with it’s slow church like organ introduction developed into a hand clapping, footstomping hands in the air finale. Blown away and breathless the audience demanded a bonus track and the Filthy’s duly obliged with their witty ‘If you can’t get down then you better get out..’ or at least I think that’s what they said the title was. If you wish to catch some live soulful funky jazz this Summer with a smile then you better get down to Vintage Goodwood on 14th August where the band will be playing in the Soul Casino. Eli Trim Off the Hook - Arthurs Tavern 57 Grove Street New York 27th June 2010 A summers evening downtown in the big apple, the bright blue neon sign together with the sounds of Chic’s ‘Good Times’ gains the attraction of this particular visiting moth. Curious, I venture into a very small bar, Arthurs Tavern, crowded with various people of all ages where at the end of the bar the deep bass and guitar licks of the aforementioned ‘Good Times’ emanates, and here squeezed happily together was the delightful house band Off the Hook. Firstly and null I quench my thirst with an appreciative cold beer, then listen as this power house of a quartet, bass, guitar, drum and keyboards effortlessly covering soul, disco standards, jazz to Hendricks. To say this is just covers band is an injustice, and the appreciative loud applause yelling and whistles after nearly every song gives some indication how good they are. There is room to squeeze in one more band member, because Wednesdays and selected Saturdays Alyson Williams will in attendance, adding her vocals and hits to proceedings. Requests were played, you named it Off the Hook gleefully and skilfully presented with flying colours. So if you happen to be visiting it’s worth accepting the chance to listen to this very talented band. Before I Fluttered away from Arthurs Tavern the band played a set of Prince tunes seamlessly segued into each other including ‘Kiss’. That 7” vinyl of Princes ‘I want to be your lover’ you have in your record collection?, well take it to the charity shop or auction it on null, trust me when you listen to this track played by Off the Hook including falsetto, you will become quite charitable. Eli Trim Earth Wind & Fire & Brand New Heavies @ 02 22 July 2010 This was the most anticipated USA/UK meeting; even more so than Barack Obama and David Cameron earlier in the same week. BNH’s Simon, Jan, Andrew and N’Dea had a “dream come true” opening for EWF churning out “Let’s Do It Again”, “You Are The Universe”, “Stay This Way” to an enthusiastic audience giving rapturous applause. I then witnessed an hour and a half of nonstop Earth Wind and Fire trembling master class with HD quality performance. Sounding like their vintage audio recordings with the original trio “The Energy” bassist Verdine White, percussionist Ralph Johnson and falsetto sonic god Philip “the voice” Bailey, the tight line cruised through classics including “Boogie Wonderland”, “Getaway”, ”Jupiter”, ”Let 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Your Feelings Show”, “Serpentine Fire”, “Sun Goddess”, “Shining Star”, “That’s The Way Of The World”, “Devotion”, “Fantasy”, “After The Love Has Gone”, “Kalimba Tree”, “Mighty Mighty”, “Brazilian Rhyme”, “Reasons”, “In The Stone”, “Got To Get You Into My Life”, “September” and ending on “Let’s Groove”. There were no lavished gimmicks or fancy costumes but the dancing, musicianship, audience participation and energy was totally consummate. Philip Bailey has the octave range of no one I have witnessed live before singing baritone as well as falsetto he hit and held notes so piercing, he’d out sing Janet Lawson singing “So High”. His son and David Whitworth, an energetic athletic kung fu kicking dancer, percussionist, singer extraordinaire were flickers of what EWF have been displaying live for 40 years. Instrumental solos from the Kalimba, percussion, guitars and horns were compelling viewing. The fact they didn’t do an encore didn't bother me as I never knew what was coming next. Their catalogue is that diverse they even included covers of “Sunny” and “Betcha By Golly Wow”. A testament to how, even minus EWF founding father and guru Maurice White, Larry Dunn, Al McKay and the original Phoenix Horns, this line up retained the natural resources that their name instilled from 40 years back. We need them back soon they were FANTASTIC!! Sunburst Band at Concorde 2 Brighton July 3rd 2010 Paul Clarke supplied an evening of retro-ness relating the past to the present on the fringes of the famous Brighton Pier with not a mod or rocker in site at Concorde 2. The entertainment came from himself, Dr Bob Jones on the wheels of steel and The Sunburst Band doing a live performance. People had travelled from as far as Kent and Luton to experience some Sussex Soul. Donna Gardiner, Pete Simpson, Tony Remy and the crew always give 150% as they storm through a weather of their anthems “Our Lives Are Changed”, “Master Rocker”, ”Fashion”, “Put A Lyric On It”, ”Everyday”, ”Sitting On Top Of The World” and “Let’s Do It”. Paddy Shelvin gave myself and Anna a little history on Northern Soul which was an enlightening addition to a well spent evening. Fitzroy "Da Buzzboy"
