Teena Marie 1956 - 2010 An introduction to the continuing legacy of Teena Marie 1956-2010. Lady T, Vanilla Choc, Ivory Queen or simply Teena Marie are the pseudonyms of Marie Christine Brockett, probably the most celebrated and most accepted Blue Eyed Soul artist in Black Music history. I was blessed to interview her 3 times in less than a year and meet her in person. Such was her magnificence amongst all her accolades that we are proud to say her long awaited 2010 Indigo concert was voted overwhelmingly the best concert in our Soul Survivor awards. The most distinctive and powerful voice from a pint sized, proud and spirited Portuguese Lover of black culture history and music period, is a massive loss to those who worshipped her. Always acknowledging relentlessly her respect for the roots of her success, she initially suffered for her art, but phonetically wrote and sang some of the most powerful love ballads with the Fire and Desire she dueted with her friend mentor and soul brother Slick Rick James. She made legal history with the ground breaking Brockett Initiative as well as being generous in recognising the talent in Lenny Kravitz, who on You Tube, made an impassioned pledge of debt and gratitude to Teena, who discovered and nurtured him from the age of 16. My time with her will be forever etched in my memories as she was very childlike, honest and vulnerable, like the songs she shared with us. There are two people who have personal treasured recordings from her because I asked her to do it and she kindly obliged. That is Teena Marie, unselfish in giving her fans what they want. Breaking the colour boundaries for the entourage of Caucasian singers that followed later in her footsteps R.I.P. (Rock The Mic In Paradise) and thank you Lady T. The next two pages are dedicated to fellow musicologists, dj’s, vocalist, journalists, singer songwriters and friends whose lives Teena has touched in one way or another. We could have filled the whole magazine with testaments so thanks to those we were able to publish and apologies to those that we were unable to. Fitzroy (Soul Survivors) It was the late 1970’s and I was working at Motown Records in London when we put out the track – ‘Behind The Groove’ and it hit the Top 10 of the UK pop chart. Teena flew into the UK and I made my way to Heathrow to pick her up with her then Manager – Winnie Martin-Gordy (wife of Fuller Gordy – Berry Gordy’s brother). I was surprised at how young and quiet she was. I drove a Ford Granada at the time and decided to take the ladies on a little tour of London and on the way through Piccadilly I opened the sunroof. Teena promptly stood up – looking through the sunroof, pointed to a store and excitedly said to Winnie – ‘Look – there’s a shop there called Lillywhites’!’ She seemed so excited, so wide-eyed at everything around her. That evening we arrived at a venue for a promotion and track show – Teena got up to sing and I was blown away. It was a complete surprise as I had never heard her sing live and she was completely awesome! Actually I preferred her singing live – she was just that good – in fact I’d go so far as to say – she was the best white female vocalist I’ve ever heard! We then continued on to doing some regional stations and shows in places like Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. When we arrived in Liverpool, where I still had kept a house, we had become such close friends that Teena and Winnie chose to stay with my family and I at my house as opposed to staying at a hotel. It is memories such as these that has made the loss of Teena hard to take. I have always felt such an affinity with her and her music – along with being a great artist – Teena was also an amazing person and her presence will be sorely missed. Les Spaine, (DJ/The Spaine Music Company)

When I got the news of Teena Marie’s sudden passing early on Monday morning, December 27, I went into a state of utter disbelief. It was only when I received an email from her manager Mike Gardner that I realized that someone I had gotten to know over the years was no longer here. My first thoughts went to her daughter Alia; then to all those who have been touched by Teena’s music for decades. I was looking forward to seeing her and working with her again in February, just over a year after I had worked with Mike to bring her to the UK for the first time in eighteen years. So many precious memories: of going to her home in Pasadena to interview her for a bio in 1990 and watching her rehearse with her band in her basement studio; of sitting with her to talk about spirituality, about poetry, about reincarnation (a belief we both shared); of seeing her perform in Los Angeles multiple times and always being awed by her sheer soulfulness; then of hanging out with her in London in January 2010, Teena excited about her first trip back, thrilled at showing Alia some of the sights of London and then putting on an absolutely tremendous performance. She and I talked, two people drawn by our deep love for soul music and its pioneers and our shared experiences as Caucasians who had been accepted into an African-American world in our own respective ways, she as a consummate artist, songwriter and performer; me, dedicated to sharing my passion for R&B through my lifelong work as a music journalist, author and in more recent years, website owner and reissue producer. While I will absolutely miss Teena’s physical presence, I have her music as a permanent reminder of her pioneering spirit and her super-soulful always-real persona. I know she’s in soul music heaven along with Luther Vandross, Sam Cooke, Phyllis Hyman, Donny Hathaway, James Brown, Nina Simone, Esther Phillips, Syreeta, Ray Charles, Minnie Riperton, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, Teddy Pendergrass and the many other greats who have touched us, brought us joy and made an indelible contribution to our lives. David Nathan, Founder, Soul Music.com Our meeting many years ago in Motown Studios was brief but very respectful. I was always impressed with the size of her voice, being such a petite woman. We spent some moments that were lifetimes, especially when we collaborated for (((My Dear Mr Gaye))). The most I can share is knowing the world is richer because her spirit is in her music and that will live with all of us to inspire, motivate, entertain, arouse, educate forever. I know her daughter and family will find the strength in the love she gave that will never leave. I wish her a rich transition. Fondly Leon Ware (Singer/Songwriter) I, like so many of my fellow Artists am still in shock from learning about the passing of my Motown labelmate, Teena Marie. I am honored that we are heirs to the amazing body of music that she Blessed us with. How very much I miss you...my Wonderful Sister in Song. Rest in peace Teena. Musically, Jean Carne (Singer/Songwriter)

Sometimes in your life God helps you to understand that just because you are on one side of the planet doing one thing that there maybe someone else on the other side doing something that will make an impact on the world that you could never believe unless you see it for yourself! Well that was and still is TEENA MARIE!! Blue eyed soul sister! Oh my God!! You talkin about tearing a song up, this sister was blessed and favoured by God to make a stand and support all nations of colour in the music business!! I never met Teena but I knew Rick James and he considered me to be his little sister, he and I both was raised in church!! He would mention how wonderful she was and how he had to protect her from the traps in the business!! He said she had amazing vocals and her song writing was fantastic! Who knew that she would take on a journey that would give her acclaimed fame - and it happened!! What a person, what a woman, what a singer, what a musician, oh my goodness we can go on and on about what Teena achieved! You don't have to know someone personally for them to have an impact on your life! I thank God for her life, for sometimes their mission can be just to help you on your life's journey through music and song! Well Teena You have made a lot of people happy!! You are a true blessing. Jocelyn Brown (Singer/Songwriter) The song "Square Biz" was my first introduction to Teena Marie. Starting with the immediately captivating energy of the music track followed by vocals which I found to be extremely soulful and superbly conveyed. My partners, James Calloway and Sonny T. Davenport were also very impressed with the song... so much so, we soon tried to emulate her unique vibe in our own composition, the as-yet-unreleased song "Thin Ice". It was very rare that the team and I were inspired like that, particularly from a single song. But so fresh and new was Teena's energy, we couldn't help ourselves. After recording the demo, it was suggested by Patrick Adams (who co-produced our composition, "Big Time" for and with Rick James) that we submitted the song to Ms Marie, for her possible consideration. A little too full of ourselves at the time, we somehow let the opportunity slip through our fingers and never got the track to her... something I've always regretted. "Fire And Desire" is my 2nd favourite song of Ms Marie's. Her amazingly real and soulful vocal performance remains amongst the best I've ever heard in a duet. This cemented Teena's impression upon me. I remain a fan since and will ever be. We who mourn her passing and will always be comforted by the amazing gifts she left with us. Well the passing of Teena Marie was as big a shock as the passing of the beloved Steve Marston of D-influence. Steve is a father of one and someday I hope to tell his boy that in 2010 we lost both his Dad and Teena and both will be sorely missed by the world of soul music. Steve was a soul man - what a guy - but it was in D-Influence that he found a home for 10 years, ...and yep we were heavily influenced by Teena's I Need Your Loving on Magic...but then that was D-Influence... Kwame Kwaten (D Influence) Teena Marie, what a loss, to the world and those who knew her even briefly, in her presence you could always feel the fire, desire and passion that lived within her for everything she did. She was a great woman and great mother, but it's her musical memory that will live forever, having written some of the all time great songs that will out live us all. I have been fortunate to both have met her and have worked on her music..God Bless Teena I know she's still doing her thing and keeping Behind The Groove. John Morales (DJ/Remixer) Teena Marie was a musical powerhouse! Creating and co-creating brilliant compositions that touched the lives of many! This dynamo kicked down cultural and racial barriers world-wide with her musicianship, showmanship and more importantly, her great spirit! I had the distinct honour of performing with her, “Lady Tee” at Chicago's Arie Crown Theater and was quietly bowled over by her “down to earth” demeanor! This very special, gifted artist left an indelible footprint and it is these character traits that lends to the longevity of her musical legacy! “Rock On Teena”! Michael Henderson (Singer/Songwriter/Musician) Sadly on boxing day 26/12/10 two worlds collided with the sudden death of Marie Christine Brockett aka Lady T aka Teena Marie. A singer, songwriter, accomplished musician and producer, the ivory queen of soul. At the young age of 54 Lady T was one of blue eyed souls greatest singers and was highly respected in the black music world as a soul artist. With the likes of today’s blue eyed soul singers, such as Amy Whinehouse, Duffy, Adele, Jessie J, who don’t have half the talent that Teena did, yet they have higher profiles. It’s not fair but that’s the name of the game. Lady T's claim to fame was being signed to Gordy Records. Teena was known as the late Rick James’ protégée who produced some of her earliest albums instead of Diana Ross's LPs. Sadly Teena Marie left behind a young daughter. Her legacy will live on with a great legacy of timeless soul classics and here are a few reminders. 1. Behind the Groove 2. Square Biz 3. I’m Just a Sucker 4. Don’t You Look Back 5. Fire and Desire and 6. Portugese Love, to name but a few. R.I.P Lady T. Dez Parkes (DJ/Record Compiler) "It goes without saying that Teena's passing is such a great loss, not only to soul music but also as someone I've always admired. She's been an inspirational and positive role model in terms of "sticking to her guns", in making fantastic soul records and I totally admire and respect what she achieved. Unfortunately (for me) I couldn't get to her previous London gig and I'm gutted I'll now never get to see her live....however her music will always play on beautifully" Louise Pollock (Real’s Singer/Songwriter)

Fitzroy chats to

GARY DENNIS I’ve seen young photos of you with ya wedge haircut - so how did you get hooked on black music and where did ya go and what are your memories and favourite clubs? It really started for many people of my age at youth clubs and discos. There seem to be around the late 60‘s a reggae interest with tunes like Double Barrel Liquidator and Young Gifted & Black. That was my first defined interest in music other than straight pop. I’d buy the reggae Chartbusters & Prince Buster 45’s but then I started at school to hear about a DJ Chris Hill. There was another DJ also in Barking at The Volunteer who I by chance years later found out was Tom Holland. The elder siblings at our school frequented the Goldmine and The Volunteer where it was more quality and funkier black music. It became a base for me to be into good music so I went to record shops like Disco 2+2 in Rainham Essex and started going to the Orsett Cock where Chris Hill played. By 1974 aged 17 I hit the Goldmine hearing tunes like Oliver Sain’s Bus Stop and Disco bits like DC La Rue’s Cathedrals breaking through. Chris was playing Glenn Miller stuff and people would jive also to Donna Summer’s Try Me I Know We Can Make It Alone - a big tune then. Miroslav Vitous’ New York City and Brass Construction’s Moving were huge but all very different. I’d listen to Robbie VIncent and look in Blues and Soul but the way I learnt was by going out and searching for music. Did you frequent the mecca shop as described by Dez 10 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Parkes almost three years back in issue 11 in East London Moondog’s? Yeah that was where Tom Holland used to buy a lot of his stuff from in East Ham High Street. The guys there included Johnny Staines and they were into Elvis and all sorts. They actually supplied tons of people in this country with records I later found out and it was a very tiny shop but it was a wicked one and I only frequented it a few times. By then there were record shops popping up everywhere like in Romford with their disco charts. American imports were becoming a lot easier to get but people that had been going to Moondog’s for years found good records you wouldn't get anywhere else. Did you ever go to the London west end clubs like Global Village and Crackers and how different were they to the Essex and South East circuit? Around 17-18 years old I went to Global Village and Crackers a few times and what a fantastic feeling walking down the stairs and hearing BT Express’s Express, a brilliant club but for some reason up till I was 21, I only went to suburban clubs in Kent and Essex. London didn’t interest me at all and I don’t know why but I guess because I followed Chris Hill, Pete Tong and Tom Holland who were more suburban Dj’s than in London. Had I followed more inner city dj’s it may have a been a different story. I had very little idea of the inner city club life but at least I sampled it.

CONYA DOSS

Fitzroy talks to Greetings Conya. You have according to your website helped pin Ohio on the soul map. I have spoken with Howard Hewitt and Slave’s Steve Arrington who confirmed that it’s a small town with massive talent i.e. Grand daddies of funk Ohio Players and Sun. What are your memories of your musical education as well as attending performing arts? My musical education came from my family. At family gatherings I was introduced to all sorts of music; Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and so on. I can remember my family, aunts and cousins just dancing around jamming! Attending a Performance Arts school allowed me and my peers to be teachers of each other. I learned so much from my friends, it was friendly competition, this includes my boy Frank McComb, whom I learned a lot from. How did you get your break? I got my first break when I wrote for 3LW and then I started recording mocks in hopes of getting further. From there A Poem About Ms Doss was created. I was given the A Poem About Ms Doss when I was fortunate to be the dj for your 2004 or 2005 concert at the Jazz Cafe prior to being sent and playing the Just Because one by Dome. I was pleased to discover gems like Good Good utilising Curtis Mayfield's Give Me Your Love and your unique feminine version of Starship written and sung by Michael Henderson who was interviewed in our last issue. As an artist, what goes through your mind in dabbling with such well respected and precious classic’s and doing them further justice? I was hesitant to record Starship, because when you deal with timeless music you have to do it justice! It was very well received but to top it off I have had the honour of Michael Henderson reaching out and telling me how he loved what I did with his record. And that was enough said! I was so flattered. We stay in contact to this day. He's living history. 16 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

I also liked the jazz funky Feeling You with that crazy synth solo towards the end from that album which sets the tone of balancing music and beats you took further on the Just Because album. N’Dambi mentioned when we spoke about the kinda budgets available to record these live sounding albums being a bit tight, so how did you manage to achieve such perfection? Friends, Friends musician friends. Lol. Also, it's great to have producers such as Myron who can play just about every instrument. Has anyone ever remarked how you kinda resemble Angie Stone on the Just Because cover and Lauryn Hill on A Poem About Ms Doss. In fact you remind me sonically of Lauryn Hill, is there any influence there? I've heard the Lauryn Hill resemblance several times, we actually met once before her solo record and people were calling me her. It was quite humorous to us both. I never heard the Angie Stone one. They are both beautiful with great skin tones, so I embrace the comparison. Your gifted style intertwined with a few who were also championing the new soul movement in the early-mid 2000’s like Angie Stone, Ereka Badu, Jill Scott and Jaguar Wright and Eric Roberson Raphael Saadiq and Bilal. Fortunately I was blessed to be their warm up dj in the same period as you, circa 20042005. Seeing you guys live was a tonic because soul music was lacking continuity and I had almost given up on it surviving the onslaught of r&b pop. How was it being part of that specialist soul movement that didn’t sell out? It was a great feeling, yet it’s a steady grind, but we have to continue on with the revolution and be heard, this will enable others who want to keep soul music the courage to embrace it and keep it going. (Continued in printed issue)

S D R O W with Ginger Tony

Hitting the ground running... All you need to know is Reel People are back! And with that one sentence 2011 is off on the good foot. Their 3rd album ‘Golden Lady’ hits the stores at the end of February and features the singles ‘Star’ and ‘Sure’ and yes, as the title suggests, there’s a cover of the Stevie Wonder gem too! The album also showcases other artists from the Reel People Music label – Choklate’s ‘Tea’ is included as is one my faves from last year - ‘Nights In Africa’ by Renn. The words “must” & “have” spring to mind!

Here we go again... Following the success of last year’s ‘Jump Start Music’ I just couldn’t help myself and so ‘Jump Start Music 2’ is on its way. If you own volume 1 (thank you) then you’re in for more of the same! If you’re yet to experience the Jump Start adventure, then you’re in for a treat. We’ve assembled another 14 Souly, Jazzy, Housey tracks and some wonderful leftfield loveliness, pretty much like the Solar Radio show.

Adding to the smile on my face is the Bahama Soul Club and their revisitation (I think I’ve made a word up) of ’Bossa Nova Just Smells Funky’. ‘Remixed’ has some of the most creative & original DJs/remixers in the business including Club Des Belugas, Mop Mop, Tape Five, Valique & Quintzy Jointz as well as current Jump Start fav Renegades Of Jazz.

‘Jump Start’ favourites Monday Michiru, Ralf GUM & The Jazzinvaders return as well as the inclusion of some very exciting artists such as Diesler, Papik and Martin Denev. Jump Start Music 2 will be available from all the usual stockists (Crazy Beat, Soul Brother, Juno, Amazon etc.) or simply contact little old me to get your hands on a copy.

‘At the Club’ is legendary DJ/producer Timmy Regisford’s latest release. You could say I‘m a bit of a fan so I’m bound to say how great it is. It’s available now on Tribe Records, so feel free to make your own minds up, but do give special attention to ‘How Does This Feel’, ‘Make Me Love You’ and ‘Sorrow, Tears And Blood’. Looking forward to the remixes immensely...

Ciao for now. GTx

Out and about... As I mentioned in my previous ramblings the Bournemouth Soul Weekender will be returning Halloween weekend (yes I know it’s a while off, but I like looking forward to things) and added to the line up is the lovely Ed Stokes & Andy Davies. If you were present last year, you’ll back me up when I say “get yourself booked in – it was fantastic!” A little bit closer is Heavy Soul at The University Centre, Cambridge on April 2nd. Resident DJs Nik Buttress, Paul Bennett & Shaun Owen will be joined by Chris Brown, James Murphy and my good self for a night of musical bliss across 2 rooms. Feel free to pester any of the DJs for more info...

Record reviews Heston - Warm Human - Cold World (Dome) This album is deep and definitely comes from Atlanta, the nurturing ground of America’s soul capital in the south. The album, written, arranged, produced and sung by Heston has acoustic classic Caribbean rock and soul influences featuring his voice evoking that gravel and smoothness that’s often emulated and imitated as Strictly’s judge Craig Revel Horwood would say...disastrously. Stand out tracks are Outside Your Window, Warm Human and the compassionate In These Arms. Hailing from Dominica he sings naturally and soulful to a reggae tinged Right Here with a Terence Trent Darby essence and funks up the soul on My Kinda Lady and Greatest Lover. A very therapeutic music album to kick off Dome’s 2011 catalogue. Al Olive - Dream I’d previously heard his voice first on a recording Beautiful Stranger a couple months back then witnessed this soul brother live at Blackpool Luxury Soul Weekender in January 2011 and he sounds the same on either medium. Likened as a modern day embryo of the late Luther Vandross, Al Olive has similar traits in his size statue, charismatic smile and his velvet carpeted pallet. This is showcased on the album’s opener Slow Down, a melody of Luther’s Never Too Much and My Sensitivity. Al has co-written the whole faultless and totally captivating album which journeys on various tempos and styles and great musicianship. Every cut, including Dream, Easy Smile and Heartache is a must listen and as a bonus Al is as gentle a giant, having met and conversed with him and a blessed spirit carrier of vocal soul music. Fantastic for 2011’s future soul!! Luxury Soul 2011 - Expansions Encapsulated on this triple CD is the successful formula of the Blackpool and Birmingham Luxury weekenders. Kindred’s soulful You Got Love its amiably followed by West Coast Soul Stars’s anthemic debut Show Me Love. The unmistakeable vocals of Keni Burke on Preston Glasse’s Orange You Ready and Maysa’s Simpatico are easy listening toe tappers. As well as newcomer Tom Glide old school veterans Deodato and vocal gymnast Al Jarreau liven it up with the uplifting Double Face and side one ends with Al Olives smooth grooving Dreams. CD 2 starts with the mesmerizing talented Frank McComb’s So Lovely followed by Adrianna Evans’s delicious Set In Stone. Bridgette brings the latin samba via Much Too Much with an equally funky Keep My Name Out Of Your Mouth by the mature vocals of Donnie. Two of Philly’s main royal subjects, princess Shirley Jones and her royal highness Jean Carn, harmoniously duet on an 80’s influenced Tell Me What’s Wrong, whilst Victor Hayens covers Arnies Love classic I’m Out Of Your Life. CD 3 the mellower cd in the box set starts with a funky Chill Out by Adika Pongo. Luxury Soul 2011’s House band’s musical director and respected bassist Ernie McKone’s outfit Soul Talk feat Gary Poole get acoustic with Guess You’re Leaving. Gianna’s My Everything is a nice vocal soul jazz cut followed by the universal love themed Olive Branch by Preston Glass. Jabari Grover’s Thank You is a chilled atmospheric and sensual number with Ray Gaskins acoustic ballad We Had To Say Goodbye concluding this triple whammy of a CD to be listened in your own luxury. Shareholder Tom - Havanna Asmara via Colonia (Büro.9 Music) From Germany a blend of jazz electro Caribbean afro funk latin music and hip beats are secreted on this cd. Using Hamilton Bohannon’s South African Man Itchy Feet intro’s the albums diverse musical cultured flavours. Veteran UK rapster and musicologist Travis Blaque recites on two diverse collaborations, a conga laced Feel Music Love & Hate and the Caribbean tinged Sorry For The Brief Affair. The funkiest brass stabbing ad lib/instrumental production is Stopover Abeokuta with two very different mixes but both afro. Alternative mixes of Love Leaves You Blue feat Alison Degbe include a Nicola Conti jazz with an afro brass mix and a minimal house mix echoed with trumpet and synth solo’s. If ya fancy something experimentally eclectic like The System. This Is For You!! Breakwater-Splashdown (Get On Down) This group always reminded me of The UK’s Hi Tension vocally and musically with their own brand of soulful jazz & funk. The title track opens up the cd energetically and by track three we have the Daft Punk sampled rock funk mooged Release The Beast. The brightness of the horns section is amplified on track five You an almost Slave You & Me simulation. The soul heads Caribbean flavoured favourite Say You Love Me Girl and Time is where you’ll hear the Hi Tension connection. The sleeping giant on here is the Jamaica Queens of USA brand of funk Let Love In again with some EWF Phoenix Horns influence. A must have CD! 22 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Tom Scott With The California Dreamers-Honey Suckle Breeze (Get On Down) Before Tom Scott recorded the infamous TV Starsky & Hutch Theme he, as a 19 year old, recorded this rare remastered 1967 Impulse Records vintage album. It’s full of that experimental vocal flower power folk jazz meets pop rock with those signature 60‘s Slide Indian guitar riffs, that was championed by Mama’s & The Papa’s, Rotary Connection and 5th Dimension. Tom Scotts saxophonics, almost Junior Walker like, provides his original recording of Blues For Hari made famous by Dave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton. He covers John Coltrane’s Namia and Jefferson Airplane’s Today the monstrous inspiration for Pete Rock & CL Smooths T.R.O.Y. Another least obvious is Never My Love inspired Grand Puba’s linguistic flow on I Like It. Crystal clear like a Blue note or a Prestige production it’s out now on via Rap & Soul Promotions. Electro Soul - Satisfaction www.electroavenue.com Speaking of The System, a chance meeting with an old school breakdancer led me to one of this track’s producers Lloyd Da Zoid via Dave VJ. System’s Mic Murphy vocal and Melle Mel (Grandmaster Flash) rapping bring back the 80’s fusion of Electro Soul and Satisfaction. There are 5 mixes very respectful of the era it celebrates Lloyd Da Zoid and DMX Krews mixes especially. Seymour Bit Nite Life mix gives a 4floor dance edge whilst the Sbassship remix has space electro planet rock effects throughout. The final mix Funk Master Ozone is influenced by Roger Troutman’s Zapp “Dancefloor” classic All n All like EWF a good all round package. Available on a limited orange vinyl 12 if ya hurry there’s around 50 left from 500 pressed.

Soul Talk - Soul Talk (Soul Talk Records) This band consists of vocalist Gary Poole, keyboard supremo Toby Baker and ex Boogie Back Records owner and the well travelled bassist Ernie McKone. They have written the majority and produced a real live soul album with a bit of honky tonk thrown in on cuts like It’s Your Life, Loving You and Keep On Moving. I Want It showcases as well as Gary’s impassioned vocals, some seductive keyboard solos from Toby. There’s definitely southern soul blues almost Al Green like theme running through the tracks, again listen to Guess You’re Leaving and Won’t Come Easy. Love and Understanding ends the crisp sounding album on a universal message and this is one for the purist’s.

M&M Mix Vol 2 (BBE) John Morales has mixed music for the kings and queens of the sound table for over 30 years and has earned the respect as a pioneering dj remixer. Following the success of his first BBE compilation hear the alternative breakdown mixes of Inner Life’s Caught Up, Aleem’s Hooked On Your Love, Teddy P’s The More I Get The More I Want, Gary Criss’s Rio Dejinerio, Candy Staton’s Young Hearts Run Free,First Choice’s, The Player and Brass Constructions Tomorrow Is Now. Different vocal parts, instrumentation and percussive breaks are added for those with train spotting ears. Scheduled for end of March 2011 this is Hot To Trot like Alfredo De La Fest. Reel People present Golden Lady One of the outfits retaining the new school essence of the old school flavour Reel People showcase the talents of a select few on Golden Lady. BSTC feat JL and Love It echoes War’s Flying Machine percussive break under JL’s falsetto vocals whilst Fun Band It’s Hard utilises Cameo’s Soundtable. Incognito’s Tony Momrelle rips up the latin groove of Star and covers respectfully Stevie Wonders Golden Lady. Choklate slithers over a disco stringed The Tea and Simon Grey’s’ The Galactica Suite is funky a space boogie moog synth reincarnation. The album concludes with with a Jazztronik’s Samurai piano riffed and melodious Nights In Africa by Renn. Thanks to Sarah @ Favouritizm for another quality album. Mint Condition - Caught My Eye (Shanacie Records) Due out Spring 2011 Continuing the purple reign that Minneapolis bring to the music equator live band supremo’s Mint Condition promote a new mix Caught My Eye a very well produced cut. Just off the back end of a successful Madison Square Gardens tour with their inspired mentor Prince this single is very melodic and harmonious and organically catchy. Almost a perfect blend of a Prince meets EWF ballad but Mint Condition style. With nice rising synth strings and great musical clarity like their live performance I witnessed at Southport last May, lets hope this helps bring the boys back in London Town this year. Charlie Wilson - Just Charlie Following in the Teddy P,Barry White and Marvin Gaye transitional footsteps of drummer to vocalist,The Gap Band’s distinctive vocalist Charlie Wilson hits us Oops Upside Ya Head with Just Charlie. The voice that graced Yearning For Your Love, Big Fun and Snoop Doggs Beautiful, is recognised undeniably on the albums most soul cuts I Can’t Let Go, Life Of The Party and Never Got Enough. Like Ronald Isley his voice works with the impassioned ballads and R&B produced genre, his voice is that versatile. He duets with Fantasia on I Wanna Be Your Man and remains an outstanding vocal maestro and looking good at 60... ladies take note. Freddie Lee The Great I Am DVD directed by Gration Dimech & James Heath This video was made in March 2010 as a promo to the single The Great I Am by Freddie Lee. His manager Jessie Tsangs concept unfolds a short biography of Freddie’s journey as an artist with and without his group The Four Aces, and overcoming his hurdles of destitution and rejection, conveyed via the song’s uplifting message and spirited energy. I was blessed to be asked to participate during the filming and even have a cameo role in the video (don’t laugh). I’ve witnessed what can be achieved in a 12 hour days filming session, and the final product being cut, spliced and edited to less than 5 minutes. This the end result is a well acted scripted classic authentic and cinematic insight and understanding of Freddies continuing faith in himself, his creator, as he rises from his heavy fall. Available on You tube check it out!! Soul Men - (High Fliers) on DVD Soul Men is comedy depicting epic the true to life rise, fall, joy and pains of black music entertainers from the 1960’s r&b era to the present day scenario. Musically directed by Stanley Clarke, it focuses on a fictitious trio Marcus Hooks (John Legend) & The Real Deal (Louis Hines) Samuel L Jackson and (Floyd Henderson) Bernie Mac and their teenage Doo Wop to a successful trio act and their individual journeys. The story unfolds mainly between the ongoing egos and deep rooted misdemeanor and challenges between the aging and ailment suffering Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac’s characters. When Marcus Hooks successful solo career ends in his death, they are reunited to make a comeback and relive the chitlin circuit road life. Unresolved issues, a woman, a love child, precise comedic timing and one liners are mixed in script like a muller light dessert. The film’s a throwback of the relationship between some of the iconic blaxploitation ingredients that influenced the gangsta rap culture with a great sound track. Watch with painkillers as ya tummy will ache from laughing!! 24 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Fitzroy talks to

Your first Dome album Storyteller was one I reviewed, and in particular I liked My Baby and loved Sunny Days, especially cause it’s what I call boogie. It was a diverse acoustic at times soul album with poignant phonetic tales such as Good Morning America socially depicting the injustice of soldiers fighting and unnecessary war and Songbird, your personal ode to music. What motivated you to write those songs and that album as it was out the same year President Obama was historically elected? Specifically with Good Morning America. I am a democrat and at the time there was something on the news about the war everyday. One night I couldn’t sleep and being a news junkie I observed one lady whose son had died and was trying to get the attention of President Bush and being railroaded by his handlers. Basically they didn’t give her the time to explain why her son went to war at nineteen and never came home. This frustrated me further so I got up and spent the next eight hours with my guitar working on Good Morning America and called and played it to my brother and felt I had a raw and honest approach to what I was thinking. What’s it like for a native Dominican to walk, live and inhale the indigenous epicenter of soul history Atlanta Georgia where people like James Brown and Millie Jackson hail from? I am thankful and grateful to be part of soul history. Dominica is no more than 90-100,000 people if that and I’m proud to get Dominica recognized in the USA as far as music outside calypso or soca and give it the twist of R&B soul music. I absolutely feel honoured to be here amongst that rich history and wealth of soul music from the south of America. I’m close with Keisha Jackson daughter of 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Millie (Wow I didn't know that) and it’s a great experience and place to do music. There is a lot of creative talent now with Anthony Hamilton, India Irie and Donnie. There has been such quality music coming out of Georgia. What have you been up to in between the last album and your current one Warm Human, Cold World? I’ve been living all the experiences of what has made this whole album what it is. I got involved in a healthy yet toxic relationship that basically gave me the inspiration to turn this album out. The moment Story Teller was over I did touring and spot dates to support the album and at the same time gathering ideas for this new one so there wasn’t a break as such. This album has a live feel to it and is quite deep and you refer to it as a personal good, bad, ugly and beautiful relationship concept. It’s acoustic and atmospheric in parts with the southern soul stew brewing and good on various levels. I like that you give a precise of what the songs are about in the booklet. Why was that important to do and have you remembered what inspired Outside Your Window, as on the sleeve notes you advised you couldn’t? Ha ha, you know I still don’t remember and I appreciate the question. I was in this relationship man and to be candid with you she was and still is the love of my life. But it was so toxic being constantly on and off. At one of the off times I wrote the song basically saying I’m experiencing all these things outside of her window of her life and our relationship and nothing is worth me being in the relationship, as bad it is we can work it out. It wasn't just one thing but a collective of much rather being with than without her. The way I speak is how I write so people can guess, but I wanted to be more personal with the audience so when they listen to the song they get an idea of what I was experiencing as we humans go through similar experiences. I have often misinterpreted the meaning of a song myself so I wanted to give the clarity. On cuts like Warm Human and the unpredictable ballad You it sounds like you’ve been through some emotional minefield so how do you find the balance in sharing the joys and pains of life through poetry and song? I’m personally proud of this album as I’m just being honest and sunk myself deep into the emotion good or bad and ended up regurgitating that to song with my guitar. The song You came from the chords I chose as I’m a guitar player who plays by ear and that put me in an emotional place to do that song. There’s no formula to making music other than approaching it honestly. I try to capture the music as well as the lyrics to convey the song. I listen to the song with and without the music to get that balance. Vocally I hear tremours of Curtis Mayfield, Terence Trent D’Arbey, Prince and Bob Marley on a fave of mine Right Here, a song that celebrates your relationship with music. I like that song more-so with its lively horns and Caribbean flavour. You were on your way home returning from a concert when 20 minutes before landing the song came to you. What prompted that surreal moment? Yeah it was a surreal moment. We as artists are always looking for musical growth so when we go from playing our music first to our family and a group of friends, then transcending that experience to smaller then a larger live audience and being paid for your performances it slowly dawns on you. Then you’re paid to travel around the world and be accommodated in nice surroundings and suddenly you realise that your living the dream you conceptualized in your mind, and you are not the only one who benefits from that dream.

Stop. Are your tyres always getting punctures?

Well your tyres can become puncture proof with Puncturesafe.

Imagine driving along a busy high road and you find you have a flat tyre. This can be inconvenient and cost time and money. Many drivers are opting for a more convenient method of dealing with tyre punctures. Puncturesafe is a sealant that prevents/repairs a puncture as and when it happens so you don’t have to change to a spare or call breakdown services. This product does not repair punctures but prevents them before they happen. A qualified Distributor inserts the sealant through the valve of the tyre (as in the picture) or a DIY kit is available for cars and motorbikes.

Some explanation? In the 70's when I became tuned into soul Jazz etc. Gambo's US chart show was my first chance of hearing US tunes before they were released in Britain, so that intro and initial guitar lick really got my afro and high waist flares swinging. The New Skyy is very significant. In the days when you could listen to music with the red light on, yeah STEREO. I was in the Navy at the time and living away from London so being able to put this stereophonic gem on tape and take it away with me was pure heaven. * Some of these tracks I have only heard once or twice. The only other time I heard the Shabazz track was on the radio in 1990 when Steve Davis the snooker player had a late night syndicated soul show. Event reviews/letters WE LOVE SOUL @ Hidden, December So I swap the snow covered wellies for the mary janes and enter this Hidden Gem of a place. If you're into interiors as I am, you'll understand the joy of rooms for all moods. At We Love Soul you have the Funk Room for when your energy needs a boost with our own Fitzroy and Colin Scott, among others - here foot flinging is a pre-requisite! It’s located in the middle so as you pass from room to room you have to stop and bust a few liccle moves en route :-) The Party Anthems Room had Aitch B, Jazzi Q (SoulIISoul), Vivy B and Victor Anderson pumping out happy vibes and BOY we got some relished reggae too. In the Soulful House room Paul Trouble Anderson had them eating out of his hand! There's a BBQ and plenty of room to sit and regenerate outside as don't forget this event ends at 7am! In summary, I'm miffed with myself that I missed the previous We Love Souls - don't make the same mistake! Tony Houston really deserves a Blue Peter badge for this one x Penelope Pitstop AKA Veronica Tom Browne,Sugar Hill Gang & Evelyn King 17th Dec 2010 Tom Browne was the first act to take the stage with 'Thighs High', 'Brighter Tomorrow' and then showcased his unique trumpet skills with a Michael Jackson tribute of 'I’ll Be There' leaving us with 'Funking for Jamaica' Tom's set was much too short. Sugarhill Gang were next and performed a medley of classic hip hop songs from other bands, but could not leave without performing the song that started the whole rap/hip hop movement 'Rappers Delight' which really got the crowd enthused. Evelyn 'Champagne' King was the grand finale, and performed all her hits and was vibrant and enthusiastic. A very likable lady whose husband Freddie Fox, a guitarist a musician in his own right, plays in the band as well and she dedicated 'Kisses don't lie' to him. Another great evening at the Indigo2. SWV & Faith Evans 8th Dec 2010 This was the second date at this venue for this dynamic duo. SWV (Sisters with Voices) started proceedings, and the popular trio from the nineties performed their hits 'I'm so into you', 'Right here' and 'Weak'; It was as if you were being transported right back to the days of New Jack Swing. With the original line up, the girls performed effortlessly and it was clear they were enjoying being on stage together again. Faith Evans has always been a performer I have always wanted to see live, and she didn't disappoint. Showcasing many of her tracks from her new album 'Something about Faith', her vocals were clear and strong. With the help of DJ Hurricane, she gave her set an urban vibe with 'Love Like This', 'One More Chance' and 'All Night Long'. 'You used to Love Me', 'I'll be Missing You' and 'As soon as I get Home' were performed with Faith's obvious passion and love for music. A brilliant evening from two truly great acts. Kindred @ Jazz Cafe 26th November 2010 Returning to the Jazz Cafe for their first concert there since 2007, Philadelphia based husband and wife duo Kindred, the Family Soul were playing to a full capacity audience. 32 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Don E warmed the crowd up with a small selection of his songs including his biggest hit 'Love makes the World go Round' and certainly got the audience in a relaxed and happy mood. Kindred featured songs from all three albums, 'Alright got everyone in the mood to party, and 'Where would I Be' got the crowd singing along word for word. Included was a version of Eddie Kendricks 'Intimate Friends' which was performed superbly. Kindred ended their set with a cover of Sly and Family Stone's 'Be Thankful' which was aided by Don E's vocal which complemented the duo's ranges perfectly. A perfect way to end a wonderful evening. Miss Sparkle AKA June Furlong Soul Network NYE @ Agenda The Vibe Mistress Vivy B earns that title purely by showcasing an entertaining Soulcial Network of mature music lovers for a night out. The event was fully attended, especially with around 700 passing through the evening. Dinner Dance and Delight were part of her menu manifesto with balloons, party poppers and champagne bubbling over two rooms of quality party and a connoisseurs music. Held in Agenda near Fenchurch Street, glad rags and whistle and flutes were donned and the 6pm4am celebrations was the perfect 2011 resolution to start the New Year with. Forthcoming 2011 are Feb 26th and bigger future ventures include the Soul In The Algarve April 28th-May 5th and the Mansion party 18th June. Like on the stock market when the shares are good, buy buy buy your advance tickets NOW!! Fitzroy Luxury Soul Weekend @ Blackpool I’m a big advocate of travel to all weekenders by public transport so I’d arranged to meet up with some friends before boarding coach D on the 13:33 service (now romantically known as the D Train) for a livener or two. Packed with many faces from the soul fraternity we’d pretty much cleared the remainder of the carriage with our boisterousness within 20 minutes of departure. Our notoriety was complete when the train guard finally had enough of our high spirits and threatened us with the Transport Police if we didn’t quieten down! Anyway, I knew I’d found good companions when a man who was later introduced as Everton asked ‘What goes well with Spiced Rum’. In the next couple of hours we consumed enough liquor and ginger beer to give me a hangover on arrival at the Hilton. Between us we finished my weekends supply; I never did see Everton again? My LSW frivolities didn’t get off to the best start as on departing Euston I discovered some of my Old Jamaica Ginger Beer had leaked in my luggage. It was far too early in the weekend for sticky pants! Friday evening is always a time of anticipation at LSW. After dinner I arrived early at The Queens to catch Bob Jeffries, a LSW favourite, and to see Cool Million who did not show as planned. Travel issues not only affected their timings but also poor Gary Dennis who was last heard of being towed back South. Cool Million sounded great once they got over initial feedback issues and Laura Jackson has a big soul voice for someone so slightly built. She had great rapport with the audience; Frank Ryle had a big smile so was clearly enjoying himself too.

Going off the beaten track you find The Lancaster which is well worth a visit. Dean Johnson’s Reggae Party in particular brought me both personal favourites and new tunes. The evening closed in Springs with Bigger playing his customary faves to a packed room. After a hearty breakfast Saturday recommences with much of the same in The Lounge. The early sets are the wonder of this event; you can chill out whilst enjoying a coffee (or my recommendation) hot chocolate, good conversation and an array of rich contemporary soul. As more people arrive it gets livelier; Al Olive’s PA went down particularly well. It was great to see new punters, including many faces I recognised from Caister. Amongst them Tony Matthews and Roni O’Brien and returnee Pete Collins, were sampling the smorgasbord that is LSW. After Saturday evening dinner, one exposé I have is the very secretive Champagne soiree run on one of the hotel’s upper floors. I managed to blag one of the very exclusive invites and jobbing as sommelier made the most of the numerous bottles that were opened and met some very lovely lads and the ladies, particularly those from Manchester, and Ian and Sally, ‘do you know Funky Bunker? The live shows commenced; the acoustics are tricky in the auditorium and it does seem to take something away from the acts. Jean Carne has a wonderful rapport and the voice is still

there, however with such a vast catalogue there was so much more that could be covered. Perhaps Michael Henderson should have gone on first as the consensus was that relatively he was a bit of an anticlimax. The evening maintained good pace finding fine sets from Bob Jeffries and concluding in Springs; for a small hardcore of us it was straight through and into breakfast. One of the highlights of the Sunday timetable has to include Bigger’s Matinee Madness where sure fire tunes had the floor packed, line dancing with abandon. Indeed the big man himself proclaimed it to be like groundhog day, well if that means good times, smiling faces and a animated dance floor he’s not wrong. As the weekend winds down and old friends bid farewell the Sunday evening becomes a far more intimate affair and the likes of Jim Hargreaves ease us into bed for a relatively early finish for the weekend. With many fond memories of the weekend and new friends and acquaintances made, roll on Birmingham. Thanks to organisers and djs. If you’ve tried other weekenders why not give this one a go. The Luxury Weekender experience has the feel of wedding reception hospitality in luxuriant surrounds, however with the best music you could wish for. Deep G
