Latest on Library Updates

Construction is underway on the new Redmond Library, and the La Pine and Sisters Libraries are well into their respective remodels. The La Pine Library is now in a temporary location; we thank the community for their patience. See pages 10 and 11 for more information about these projects and temporary library locations. When exploring all of the great events you’ll find in this guide, be sure to note the address of programs for these libraries in particular, as many will be held at community partner locations.

A Novel Idea Celebrates 20 Years

We’re going big for the 20th year of this beloved community read program! Four authors will join us on April 29 as part of the celebration: David James Duncan, María Amparo Escandón, Peter Heller, and Anne Griffin. But before they get to Central Oregon, you’ll find a month’s worth of great programming (see pages 4–8). Turn to page 12 for more information about A Novel Idea.

Using This Guide

You’ll find full descriptions and more information for all programs on our web calendar at dpl.pub/ calendar. The web calendar is also your go-to place for any programs that require registration. Because things sometimes change, be sure to check the web calendar before attending any in-person events. See page 9 for information about cover artist Zoe Cochran.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

CUSTOMER PROFILE PAT CAMERON

Pat keeps a list of books that she wants to read. From classics like Homer’s Odyssey to recent Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Erdrich’s The Night Watchman, she requests these materials through the library—because buying several books every month can be expensive. “There are some beautifully illustrated children’s books. I can see these books through the HomeWord Bound program that I wouldn’t normally purchase,” says Pat. The library sends materials (books, large print, and audiobooks on CDs) to 60 home-bound

COVER ARTIST ZOE COCHRAN

customers monthly. “Once you reach your 90s it’s a different world and getting to the library can be tricky,” says Pat. Library staff and volunteers fulfill these requests to connect with Deschutes County residents in their homes and at independent living facilities. Pat is keen on supporting public libraries. “Libraries are the repository for connection to everything from the past—media, art, folktales, illustrations, and the written word.” To learn more about HomeWord Bound, visit dpl.pub/ homebound.

Creative inspiration can strike anywhere and for this young artist her backyard is an ever-changing canvas. “Two bunnies like to hangout by the woodpile and bluebirds nest in the birdhouses my grandpa and I made,” says cover artist Zoe Cochran. This adventurous nine-year-old loves to spend time exploring the outdoors and learning on her family’s homestead. “We raise chickens, grow companion plants, and discover a lot about insects, but my favorite subject is reading,” says Zoe. Whether checking out books from the library or reading at home, some of her favorite picks are The Berenstain Bears, Bad Kitty, and the Magic Tree House series. Zoe and her older sister attend Oregon Family School where they incorporate library trips, science camp, sports, and cultural immersion (hatching baby sea turtles in Mexico’s Baja Peninsula!) into their curriculum. Closer to home, Zoe recently created a habitat for a caterpillar so she can observe the chrysalis morph into a swallowtail butterfly and take flight.

STAFF PROFILE ANNIE BUCHER

Public Services Specialist

On any given day, Annie assigns library cards, helps customers find books, troubleshoots digital downloads, assists with printing services, and does her best to answer any questions—all with a smile on her face. Annie joined the Sunriver Library as a Public Services Specialist in November 2021. This small but mighty branch is an important resource for the community. “Not only do we connect people with information and books, but we provide a comfortable space to relax with access to computers and a place for kids and families to play,” says Annie. Her favorite part of the job is telling new customers about the multitude of resources. “People are genuinely surprised at the library’s resources, like borrowing a Cricut kit and air fryer from the Library of Things.” While there are many things to love about her job, Annie says she enjoys recommending books to customers, including one of her all-time favorite reads, The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.

Your New and Updated Libraries Are Taking Shape

It’s been a busy few months at various libraries in Deschutes County! In early March we broke ground on the all-new Redmond Library. We also hosted a public information session to share details about the planned library at Stevens Ranch in east Bend. Remodeling of the La Pine and Sisters Libraries is moving along right on schedule, and the temporary La Pine Library is now open.

GROUND-BREAKING: REDMOND LIBRARY

Library staff and community leaders broke ground on the new Redmond Library on March 11 on the library site at 827 SW Deschutes Avenue in Redmond.

REDMOND LIBRARY

More than 300 community members and library staff all joined in the celebration in early March as we broke ground on the Redmond Library (find a video of the groundbreaking at dpl.pub/rdmgroundbreaking). Construction is underway on the new 40,000-square foot library, which is being built on the site of the former library and is scheduled to open in fall 2024, featuring large meeting spaces for community use, collaborative and co-working areas, DIY spaces, an engaging children’s discovery space for learning and play, and a covered civic patio. Learn more about the new building and the ways in which it will serve the growing Redmond community at dpl.pub/futureredmond.

We are ready to greet you in our temporary library space, located across the parking lot from the La Pine Library in the John C. Johnson building. The temporary space enables customers to pick-up holds, browse a limited selection of popular titles for all ages, and use public computers. The newly remodeled La Pine Library will open this fall. SISTERS LIBRARY

The Sisters Library is also on track to re-open this fall. In the meantime, the temporary Sisters Library is operating out of a mobile unit on the library property at 110 N Cedar Street. As with the La Pine Library, the temporary space allows you to pick-up holds, browse a limited selection of popular titles for all ages, and use public computers. Learn more at dpl.pub/ futuresisters.

*Note that all times are estimated and may fluctuate. Visit dpl.pub/futurelibraries for the latest updates.

The Stevens Ranch Library in east Bend will include 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space on 8.5 acres at the northeast corner of 27th Street and Wilderness Way in Bend. The state-of-the-art library will incorporate community meeting and study rooms, co-working spaces, a children’s discovery center, a teen lounge, a creative DIY zone, and outdoor gathering spaces. Project architects recently presented design plans and more information about the Stevens Ranch Library during a public session in east Bend. If you missed that event, you can find it online at dpl.pub/sr-presentation. The new library will allow for increased collections and a distribution center to move materials more quickly between all libraries in Deschutes County. Construction is slated to begin in January 2024 and is expected to take approximately two years to complete. To learn more, visit dpl.pub/ futurestevensranch

A NOVEL IDEA 2023 Building community one book at a time—for 20 years

ASwe thought of ways to honor 20 years of A Novel Idea, we knew a celebration was in order. Picking just one book to mark this occasion was a daunting task, so we decided to pick four books from four authors! We are excited and honored to bring together David James Duncan, María Amparo Escandón, Peter Heller, and Anne Griffin at the end of April for a free presentation.

Programming

Programming begins on March 31 and wraps up with the authors’ visit on April 29. Find A Novel Idea-related events on pages 4–8 of this guide as well as online at dpl.pub/anovelidea.

Passport to Reading

You can read your way through A Novel Idea 2023 with your own Reading Passport. Collect four stamps by reading one book by each author, and receive a free commemorative tote bag. Stop by any Deschutes Public Library location to pick up your Reading Passport.

Main Event

Wrap up the 20th anniversary of A Novel Idea with a conversation between Duncan, Escandón, Heller, and Griffin. This is a free event, but tickets are required and are available starting April 10 at dpl.pub/anovelidea and at all library locations.
