Welcome!

Get ready for fun at every turn, because Summer with the Library is back! Starting June 1, readers and adventurers of all ages can sign up for the free Summer with the Library program. Then, start reading to earn rewards and a chance to win great prizes! Learn more by visiting dpl. pub/summer, and be sure to browse this guide for all of the fun programs happening in and around your libraries this summer.

Library Bond Projects: Update

The all-new Redmond Library is taking shape! The foundation is in place on the new building, which will double the size of the previous Redmond Library and be slightly larger than the Downtown Bend Library. Extensive remodeling at the La Pine and Sisters Libraries is also underway, with those buildings expected to reopen to the public later this fall. Next up starting later this year: remodeling of the Sunriver Library. See pages 10–11 for more information about bond projects.

Using This Guide

You’ll find full descriptions and more information for all programs on our web calendar at dpl.pub/ calendar. The web calendar is also your go-to place for any programs that require registration. All library programs are free of charge. Because things sometimes change, be sure to check the web calendar before attending any in-person events.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

CUSTOMER PROFILE PATTY SHERIN

Patty grew up in NYC’s public libraries of the 1980s with the perils of card catalogs and stern librarians. Her college library offered a brighter outlook and that positive experience later catapulted Patty through our doors. “The library connected me with others and so many valuable resources,” said Patty. Patty wanted to write a book and checked out every item on the topic, but she hit a wall when it came to market research. Enter Community Librarian Graham and the Book-a-Librarian service. Through the library, customers have access to one-on-one research help. “Graham sent a report of market segments and helped create the ideal reader,” says Patty. “If I ran into a problem I couldn’t solve, I contacted Graham. Throughout this process, I never felt judged and he was always eager to help.” Years of hard work finally paid off. On February 17, 2023, Patty’s book, Brick by Brick Bonding, was published. “Libraries are awesome. I’d like to be an advocate for how things are changing and the power of libraries.”

COVER ARTIST KENDALL WILBER

A book can take you anywhere. Kendall captured that sentiment perfectly for the Events guide cover. “I’ve always enjoyed Fantasy books. I grew up reading Harry Potter and Narnia, and there’s always a mythical creature or fantastical flying moment.” Kendall is a recent University of Oregon graduate, receiving her degree in English with a minor in Digital Humanities. But from an early age, she knew she wanted to become a librarian. “I volunteered at the Downtown Bend Library for National Honor Society and this fall I hope to apply to Master’s in Library and Information Science programs,” said Kendall. Even though she favors holding a physical book, Kendall notes that libraries make it easy to borrow materials digitally. You can find her thrifting copies of classic books, including a recent favorite, The Wind in the Willows. “I read it last fall and it made feel warm and cozy inside. It’s a really sweet story that has a nice message of remembering to appreciate the little things in life.”

JARED HALLER KEVIN O’NEAL FACILITIES TECHNICIANS

Our amazing facilities technicians meticulously maintain seven buildings, four vehicles, miles of shelving, and hundreds of locks and doors. Kevin and Jared have taken on much of the heavy lifting (literally) to prepare library spaces for remodels and construction. “It’s an honor to improve upon library spaces and assist in new construction projects,” says Jared. “In our work we do everything possible to keep materials out of the landfill and minimize the impact and expense on libraries.” Their work takes place behind the scenes, doing the upkeep on library buildings throughout Deschutes County.

“Although we don’t directly work with customers, we do support library staff to keep branches functional, comfortable, and open to the public,” says Kevin. There’s nothing these two can’t handle! When Jared isn’t troubleshooting, he keeps busy chasing after his five-year-old daughter and seeks opportunities to hunt and camp in the great outdoors. Similarly, Kevin escapes to Smith Rock State Park to rock climb with his wife between planning their National Parks trips.

AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER begins for Deschutes County

The new Stevens Ranch Library in east Bend and the new Redmond Library benefit all of Deschutes County with more materials, spaces, and opportunities

Like a great book that keeps you turning the pages, the next chapter for libraries in Central Oregon is an exciting one. Starting nearly 10 years ago, Library Board and staff engaged with thousands of residents throughout the county to understand what they wanted from their libraries. Topping the list were more meeting spaces, more collections, and more access to a variety of modern resources and amenities. In 2020, Deschutes County voters approved the bond that is making new and renovated libraries, and the services they offer, a reality.

The new Stevens Ranch Library will include a highly efficient processing center that will speed up delivery of books and other library materials to all libraries in Deschutes County. In addition, both the Stevens Ranch Library and the new Redmond Library will offer:

• More books, movies, and other library materials

• Early learning discovery centers and story time spaces

• Increased capacity to move collections quickly between all county libraries

• Public meeting, creative, and co-working spaces

• Areas for teens to study and create

• Increased access to technology throughout

• Multi-use patio areas for gatherings

• Energy-independent designs

REDMOND LIBRARY

The new Redmond Libary will open to the public in Fall 2024.

What’s more, all other existing libraries are undergoing renovations and remodeling. The La Pine and Sisters Libraries are already underway and will reopen to the public this fall. The Downtown Bend, East Bend, and Sunriver Libraries will follow.

As a cornerstone of society, libraries promote literacy, provide free access to resources, and serve as trusted community gathering spaces. We’re excited to start this new chapter with the people of Deschutes County!

CALLING ALL ARTISTS!

These new and renovated libraries will also offer dynamic public art created by local and regional artists. To learn more about the vision for art in Deschutes Public Libraries, visit https://dpl.pub/call-for-art for more information.
