PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

Jessica Miller

PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST

If you’re patiently waiting for the new Redmond Library to open then you’re in good company because Jessica cannot wait to welcome customers to the new building later this year! When she’s not helping customers, leading Family Story Time, or browsing the graphic novel section, you can find her digging deep into the library’s history and genealogy resources online. “I was able to find the exact town in Sicily where my great-grandparents left in the late 1910s and which ship they embarked on,” says Jessica. “I also found the exact girls’ home in Brooklyn where my grandmother and her sister were left in the 1940s and ʻ50s.” Jessica loves helping customers discover all that the library has to offer and believes that libraries are a source of information and community education available to everyone. She’s currently binge reading Katherine Dunn, who lived and wrote in the Portland area in the 1960s, but her all-time favorite author is John Green (DFTBA!).

CUSTOMER PROFILE

Jordan Ohlde

Libraries celebrate diversity in all its forms, embracing the uniqueness of everybody that comes through their doors. Jordan has lived in Central Oregon for 39 years and is an active member of the Central Oregon Coalition for Access (COCA). “We meet every other month and talk about different aspects of how to make it more accessible to live in Central Oregon,” says Jordan. “I think the new library will be a good start.” Jordan was born with cerebral palsy, a medical condition that has him reliant on a using a motorized wheelchair, sidewalk ramps, and public transportation, as well as public institutions like the library to utilize free computers and meeting rooms. “The Downtown Bend Library is centrally located and it gives me another way to connect with the community than rather sitting at home and doing my work.” Thanks to Jordan’s advocacy, our county is seeing improvements to accessibility, but there’s still work to be done creating more inclusive spaces for all. VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Diane Brown

Just about every day of the week Diane has a volunteering gig around Deschutes County. Since 2019, she has lent her time and talents as a traveling story time volunteer for the library. A former high school French and Spanish teacher, Diane sparks language comprehension with pre-k bilingual students that are eager to learn. Her joy for sharing international culture included hosting three AFS foreign exchange students during her teaching career. “My two sons really enjoyed having this cultural exchange as part of their upbringing. I am still in contact with all three former students,” says Diane. When she’s not volunteering, you can find her enjoying Lily King novels and a recent favorite read, by Marianne Wiggins. “Libraries are an important community and world builder where you can see all ages and walks of life,” Diane says.

Internet Hot Spots

dpl.pub/mobilehotspots

Giving Deschutes County residents the ability to connect to the internet helps bridge the digital divide, which refers to the gap between people and communities who do not have reliable access to technology—like the internet—and those who do. Deschutes Public Library has mobile hotspot devices that Deschutes County residents can check out for up to three weeks. Each hotspot works much like a WiFi network, allowing up to five devices to link to one hotspot at a time.

You can also check out Curriculm Crates, which are filled with books on popular subjects often used in schools, as well as road, trail, and topographic maps for Central Oregon and beyond. Learn more at dpl.pub/beyondthebooks .
