PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

SHARON JONES

Checking out books is one way to get value from your library card, but Sharon doesn’t go a single day without the help of her library. “I listen to audiobooks through Libby and Hoopla daily. I can’t think of a library service that I haven’t used,” she says. From resume-building workshops and nonprofit databases, to meeting room reservations and checking out audiobooks on CD, Sharon credits the library with having saved her thousands of dollars—and that’s just the start. This spring she met with AARP Foundation Tax-Aid specialists through the library. “Normally I do my own taxes, but thought I’d check out the free tax service. They ended up saving me money on my Federal taxes.” To many in our community the library is a refuge, a place of comfort that provides access to services and materials that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible. “I have always been treated with kindness and respect. I just love what our local library represents and I share my experience with anyone who will listen.”

COVER ARTIST

CAROLYNN SMITH

Carolynn has a knack for upcycling materials and adding her creative touch to blank surfaces. During COVID, she began decorating brown paper bags used for meal delivery at her independent living residence. That same talent translated onto the cover of this guide. “I wanted to do something that shows books, authors, and my favorite color—pink,” said Carolynn. She has always shown an interest in art and education, having taught third grade for 15 years. “Every day after recess the students had 30 minutes to rest, color, or listen to a story. Nearly every child chose to hear me read aloud classics like . I understood the value of reading and comprehension at that age.” Carolynn now hosts art classes at her residence and attends a library-lead book club. “Libraries are free, convenient, and offer more than I have time to participate in. You can get lost in history, a romance novel, or read an up-and-coming author.”

STAFF

MAYRA CORN OPERATIONS MANAGER

Mayra joined our staff one year ago, bringing 16 years of library expertise to Deschutes Public Library. Her day-today skill set involves overseeing library branches and operations, or in her own words, “I have the pleasure of working at and with all communities, getting to know so many passionate and kind-hearted individuals.”

She’s a true asset, able to bridge care put into the work of libraries by staff and the thirst for knowledge from customers. “Libraries are the great equalizer. People from all backgrounds can come to learn, grow, and be entertained exactly as they are; I’ve yet to find anything that can top that,” she says. One of her favorite reads is by Matthieu Maudet. “It’s the Spanish translation of a French kids’ board book. It has a great twist, and shows how clever and fun a kids’ book can be at any age.” Speaking of fun at any age, Mayra is a kid at heart who enjoys longboarding with her labraheeler, Edie.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Bond Projects Update

La Pine Library & Sisters Library

These libraries are both centrally located near schools and civic cores. The renovations are creating bright and open spaces that welcome community members with amenities such as more meeting and tutor rooms, enhanced children’s discover spaces, cozy fireplace reading areas, and large community gathering spaces. The La Pine Library is tentatively scheduled to re-open in late September, with the Sisters Library following in late October.

UPDATE

La Pine Library

The temporary La Pine Library closed in early June when it sustained major damage following an auto accident. The good news is that remodeling of the library itself is moving at an accelerated pace, with a grand re-opening tentatively scheduled for late September. Stay tuned to our website at dpl.pub/futurelapine, where we will post information about grand opening celebrations as soon as we have it.

In the meantime, the next closest library location is in Sunriver (56855 Venture Lane). There, you can drop off materials and pick up holds, as well as browse the collection and access resources like public computers. We are also hosting several pop-up library sessions in August at the La Pine Activity Center to provide a place for customers to return materials as well as provide general account assistance and basic reference and library support:

Mondays in August: 5–7:00 p.m.

Tuesdays in August: 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Sunriver Library

The Sunriver Library will close for renovations in October after the La Pine Library re-opens; visit dpl.pub/futurelibraries for updates on timing as they are available. A small temporary space will open on the Sunriver Library property to allow for holds pick-up, light browsing, and computer/printer use.

Redmond Library

In Redmond, the footprint of the new library is beginning to take shape, with the building itself scheduled to open in fall of 2024 (the temporary Redmond Library is open at 2127 S Hwy 97 in Redmond). Once complete, the Redmond Library will be 40,000 square feet—larger than the Downtown Bend Library— and will include more public meeting and creative spaces.

Stevens Ranch Library

Designs for the Stevens Ranch Library in east Bend were reviewed during the June Library Board meeting, with the Board unanimously voting to approve moving forward with the plan. The Stevens Ranch Library features solar panels and materials designed for maximum energy efficiency, which will ensure that the all-electric building meets or exceeds LEED Gold certification standards. Learn more at dpl.pub/stevensranch.

STEVENS RANCH LIBRARY

The Stevens Ranch Library will be located at the northeast corner of 27th and Wilderness Way in east Bend. The Library Board recently voted to unanimously approve moving forward with the plan.

More Resources for All

Though the Stevens Ranch Library will be located in Bend, it will greatly increase the number of books and other library resources available to residents throughout Deschutes County. Deschutes Public Library has a floating collection, which means that most items aren’t housed permanently at any one specific library—they “float” from location to location as they’re checked out and returned. Floating collections save time and money, and they give everyone in the county access to the full breadth and depth of what’s available through the library. What’s more, the Stevens Ranch Library will greatly increase the library’s capacity to move collections quickly between all county libraries, speeding up our ability to get materials into the hands of customers.
