PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
STAFF PROFILE
Theresa Peoples
PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
Walk a mile in Theresa’s shoes at the Downtown Bend Library and you will experience a vibrant mix of tasks that reflect her passion for literature and community. Her days revolve around checking in library materials, creating eye-catching displays, and of course, helping the public with whatever information needs they have. “I enjoy taking on challenging, involved reference questions and helping people—especially with things that they didn’t know were possible,” says Theresa. Her go-to read is Mansfield Park by Jane Austen (Theresa was an English major in college, after all), but more recent favorite authors include Naomi Novik, Lisa Kleypas, Nalini Singh, Casey McQuiston, and Andy Weir. With no shortage of reading materials, Theresa and the library are a perfect match. “Our library is strong because we are a reflection of our incredible community, and we provide support to hopefully help the people of Deschutes County keep growing and learning.”

Rya Fennewald
COMMUNITY LIBRARIAN, COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Maybe you have strolled over to the library, but have you ever joined one of its walking groups?
Led by Community Librarian Rya, these lively outings are part of the library’s mission to bring outreach to every corner of Deschutes County. “I love picking up right where our walking group left off and hearing about the cool, library-centric things customers are sharing,” says Rya. She plays a key role in supporting the Library’s Senior Services programs and co-edits The Library Corner, a publication connecting isolated seniors with community news and library resources. If you’re new in town, Rya suggests stopping by the library or joining a community event. “You’re guaranteed to meet a friendly face and find something to keep you busy as you settle in,” says Rya. Recently honored by her colleagues as the librarian with “boundless patience,” Rya’s poised to bring holiday cheer to upcoming events, including festive giftwrapping parties that promise to bring the community together.
CUSTOMER PROFILE
Maggie Kerr
From an early age, sisters Maggie and Anna shared a special bond. They grew up two blocks from their local library, the first place they were allowed to walk to alone. Older sister Anna introduced Maggie to empowering books and stories about women. “Those books made a lasting impression on me,” Maggie recalls. “They showed me my potential to make an impact and to be self-reliant.” Anna’s love for literature led her to become a reference librarian at the Massachusetts Historical Society for many years, until she passed away at age 41 following two years of treatment for cancer. “Anna was a tireless advocate for others and a powerful force for good,” Maggie says. “She inspired everyone around her to think bigger, act with purpose, and look beyond their own circumstances.” In her honor, Maggie wanted to carry Anna’s spirit forward by celebrating empowerment through reading. She established “Anna’s Radical Library Day” to encourage equitable, open access to books, services, and resources at the library, just as Anna would have done. She says donations in Anna’s honor can be made to the Deschutes Public Library Foundation (dpl.pub/ foundation).

OPENING IN JANUARY
New Redmond Library
The new Redmond Library is buzzing with activity as we work to get the building ready to open to the public. While it looks complete on the outside—and books are on the shelves inside—there is still a lot of behind-the-scenes work in process. December and early January will be dedicated to staff training and education on a variety of new systems and services in this functional and beautiful building. This training will ensure that we are ready to serve the public to the highest standard when the doors officially open this winter.
We anticipate opening the doors to the public in late-January. In the meantime, the temporary Redmond Library (located at 2127 S Hwy 97) will remain open through Saturday, December 21. Redmond Library customers: you can hold your library items during the time period between the closure of the temporary library and the opening of the new library; no late fees will accrue. Visit dpl.pub/futureredmond for more information about the transition period and the new library.
To be updated as soon as the new Redmond Library’s official opening date is announced, be sure to sign up for “Redmond Library Updates” at dpl.pub/newsletters.
