Bloom Well changed its name. We want cannabis and our lifestyle brand integrated with our everyday lives, community, and culture. We medicalized cannabis, then we legalized it, and now we normalize it. Change starts with our words, symbols, and actions. The work we do is meaningful — serving people and the plant.

Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of marijuana. Please keep marijuana out of the reach of children.

F R E Q U E N T LY A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S

The Rules Around Legal Weed Whether you’ve been in our fair state since recreational marijuana became legal on July 1, 2015, or this is your first foray into all things cannabis in Oregon, here are some questions that we—and the fine dispensaries and cannabis businesses of our region—hear often.

Where can I get the goods? The dispensaries listed in this Leaflet, for one—and other dispensaries licensed by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission throughout the state. How much can I have? Here are the deets on the limits, straight from the OLCC: Personal possession is limited to: ·· 1 ounce of usable marijuana in a public place (as in, marijuana that’s ready to smoke/consume) ·· 8 ounces of usable marijuana ·· 16 ounces of a cannabinoid product in solid form ·· 72 ounces of a cannabinoid product in liquid form

·· 5 grams of cannabinoid extracts or concentrates, sold alone or contained in an inhalant delivery system ·· Four immature marijuana plants ·· 10 marijuana seeds What do I have to know before I go buy pot at a dispensary? Many dispensaries only accept cash due to federal banking restrictions. Also, you’ll need a legal I.D. to be admitted into the room selling the flower/extracts/etc. That can include a driver’s license, passport, tribal I.D., etc.—as long as the I.D. is valid. Seriously, don’t try to walk in with an expired license. You will walk back out an unfulfilled stoner. When you get inside, let your budtender know what you’re looking for—or that you don’t know what you’re doing. Don’t worry, partner—they’ve done this before. I’m 18, so I can smoke recreational marijuana now, right? Nope. You have to be 21—and that includes consuming at home. So I can smoke outside my favorite bar/ restaurant, right? Sorry, friends, but no. As of now, cannabis industry advocates are working toward establishing public consumption laws, but

for now, you can’t smoke or use marijuana in a public place. That includes patios and outside areas at bars and restaurants. If you do use marijuana there, it’s really not cool, because it puts that place’s liquor license in jeopardy. Public places, according to the OLCC, include “hallways, lobbies, and other parts of apartment houses and hotels not constituting rooms or apartments designed for actual residence, and highways, streets, schools, places of amusement, parks, playgrounds and premises used in connection with public passenger transportation.” So where can I smoke/consume pot? To be brief, on private property. If your landlord disallows it, that’s legit and within the letter of the law, so you’ll have to find somewhere else. Can I take my pot into Washington and California, since it’s legal in those states? No. It’s illegal to take your marijuana across state lines. Do so and risk a federal offense. Will I risk a DUII if I’m under the influence of marijuana while driving? Yep. According to the OLCC: “Driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) refers to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated or drugged, including impairment from the use of marijuana.” LEAFLET by Source Weekly 7

SOURCE WEEKLY CANNABIS COLUMNIST

E

ven if you don’t partake, virtually everyone understands that you smoke the flowers from a cannabis plant to get the THC, CBD and other cannabinoids that have physical and psychological effects and benefits. About the same number know that you can add that same flower (or trim) to virtually any food that has fat/oil, and get an edible. Then you have dabs. “Dabs” is a term not only for the serving size doled out for ingestion via smoking or vaping, (“a dab’ll do ya”), but a catch all for concentrates and extracts—which include a number of products in which the same aforementioned THC/CBD and other cannabinoids and terpenes are removed from the cannabis plant and turned into a product with a very high THC/CBD content. Remember hash? That’s arguably the oldest form of dabs that most people recall, and as it’s made by either removing the THC via screening/shaking it off or using

ice water. It’s considered a “solvent free” extract, meaning no solvents were used in its production. You also have BHO/PHO, and no, not the soup. It’s short for butane hash oIl and propane hash oil, in which the plant matter is immersed in either gas under pressure, which serves as a solvent and strips the good stuff off and concentrates it into an oil. When done properly, it’s safe. When it’s not, it blows shit up real good. Whenever you hear of a house fire started by someone making “hash oil,” it’s usually some Cleetus yokel using store bought butane and homemade equipment. It’s not only illegal to make your own BHO/PHO at home in Oregon, it can be fatal, so, you know, don’t do that. CO2 Oil is what’s commonly found in vape pens. It uses—that’s right—CO2 to extract a concentrated oil. By manipulating the extracted BHO/ PHO oil, you can create a multitude of products with different consistency and names, such as taffy, wax, shatter, pull and snap, sap, crumble, honeycomb, budder

and live resin. That last one is made by freezing fresh cannabis before performing extraction, which preserves more of the terpenes, which give the finished product a more pronounced smell and taste. Fussypantses such as myself prefer solvent-free extracts, which along with hash can come in the form of products known as keif, the THC power that collects from the plant via screening/shaking/ice water extraction, full melt bubble hash, named so because the product completely melts when consumed, leaving virtually no ash, and the hot new trend, rosin. It’s made by solely using heat and pressure to “bleed” out the THC/CBD into an oil/soft solid that is both strong and flavorful. You can add any of these to a bowl or joint, although for maximum effect and taste, they are consumed using a “Dab rig” (using a small blow torch to heat up a piece of metal) or “E-nail” aka electronic nail, allowing you to lose the torch. So there you go—and remember, a dab will do ya! LEAFLET by Source Weekly 19

Budtender Olympics BUDTENDER O LY M P I C S It’s been over two years since Oregonians first began to enjoy the benefits of recreational marijuana in our state—and with it has come a populace that’s a lot more informed than we used to be, back when we got our ganja through more nefarious means. Whether we’re talking about strain types, the effects of indica versus sativa, terpenes, extracts, edibles, or the ideal devices with which to consume all of that cannabis love, these days, Oregonians tend to know their stuff. How did we get all that knowledge? Well, the friendly budtenders at local dispensaries, for one. A term dubbed in the modern age of legal cannabis, your “budtender” is the person who greets you when you enter the product room of a dispensary, and then dishes out the knowledge as prolifically as Emeril Lagasse dishes out yummy plates. “Budtender” is a term so relatively new to the social lexicon that it was only this year, in the Source’s 2017 Best Of Central Oregon issue, that our readers started getting the pleasure of voting in the new “Best Budtender” category. (In case you’re wondering, Source readers voted Justin McCune of Miracle Greens their fave this year.) BUT—because this is a new industry that we’re pretty stoked about, we didn’t want to stop at just having Source readers vote the best. We wanted a chance to put our local budtenders to the test—to find out what they know about terpenes, extracts and all that other fun stuff. That’s where the inaugural Source Weekly Budtender Olympics came in. New industry, new contests! This fall, we asked each of our local dispensaries to send a budtender our way to show us what they know. Ten budtenders answered the call, coming in hyped to share their knowledge. Read on to find out what feats of budtender strength we put them through in order to crown a winner in the Source Weekly’s 2017 Budtender Olympics. And if you’re a budtender who missed out on the fun, come on by next year! We’ll tell you when.

THE CONTESTANTS Competing in the Source Weekly’s 2017 Budtender Olympics were 10 brave souls, who—very much unlike the competitors at the actual Winter and Summer Olympics—had no freakin’ idea what they were getting themselves into. We invited them, but all we told them was, ‘show up with joint rolling materials and 1 gram of a common strain of flower from your dispensary.’ These ninja Central Oregon budtenders answered the call.

Round 2 I.D. THE STRAIN

In Round Two of the Source Weekly’s 2017 Budtender Olympics, competitors had to identify strains by look, feel and scent. We asked each ‘tender to bring in a common strain from their own dispensary—so if you have your smart-cap on, you’ll realize that means each budtender ostensibly should have known at least one of the strains in the bunch.

LA PINE’S PREMIER CANNABIS DISPENSARY

Entries included multiple versions of Organic Sour Diesel, Gorilla Glue and Blue Dream, as well as OG Kush, Golden Pineapple, J1 and Bruce Banner.

OUR HELPFUL AND KNOWLEDGABLE STAFF IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING THE BEST PRODUCTS AT AN UNBEATABLE PRICE!

We passed out bags labeled with A, B, C and so on, having each budtender name the strain. Was this a tough round? Fo sho. Emerging victorious in this round was Fernando Tesón of Cannabend, with five—yes, five correct answers, pretty much blowing everyone else out of the water. Round 3

IMPRESS US WITH YOUR JOINT ROLLING

While not exactly a skill required of budtenders on the job, we figured a joint rolling round would demonstrate a budtender’s overall commitment and love for all things cannabis. Because passionate people are great at their jobs, right? Round Three of the Source Weekly’s 2017 Budtender Olympics involved the more subjective task of impressing us with a joint displaying the trifecta of creativity, craft and smokability. In other words, if it looked good, yet wouldn’t stand up to the test of actually being consumed… well…

“The Basic Joint”  Alecia Wright, Substance

Oh, and they had just 15 minutes to get it done.

“The Backflip Cotton Filter Doobie”  Jake Meyers, Jenny's

“Ode to Juicy Jay's Papers”  Fernando Tesón, Cannabend

r e n n i W

“‘The Gold Standard’ Cross Joint”  Alex Hall, Diamond Tree

“Crossy McCrosserton”  Alex Perez, Plantae

“Love of Euphoria”  Zane Aylett, Diamond Tree 26  ISSUE 2 Inagural Budtender Olympics

“Madras”  Travis McCalister, Plantae

IMHO, all of the budtenders brought it in this round. Finalists included Natalie Walheim of Dr. Jolly’s with a pot-leaf shaped joint, a Cheshire cat-themed, striped joint from Curtis Duke of Substance, an octopus joint by Dax Poboisk from The Herb Center and a cannon-type joint from Fernando Tesón of Cannabend. “Cheshire Cat”  Curtis Duke, Substance

Each of the joints had some creativity, craft and smokability—but when it came down to it, the heart-shaped joint from Zane Aylett of Diamond Tree was voted top by our crack team of Source judges. But no, we didn’t smoke it on site to find out if it really held up; Zane wanted to enjoy the love he put into this J on his own time. One love, Zane.

Round 4 EYEBALL WEIGH

For the final round of the Source Weekly’s 2017 Budtender Olympics, we brought out our test strain—a couple ounces of organic homegrown Blue Dream, and asked each budtender to weigh out ½ ounce just by eyeballing it. Then we popped it onto a scale to find out who got the closest. Again, Zane Aylett of Diamond Tree emerged the winner.

Champion

Other Herbs You  Can Smoke or Vape  BY JOSH JARDINE

SOURCE WEEKLY CANNABIS COLUMNIST

T

HIS JUST IN! Cannabis is a great herb to smoke—one of the best. I know that’s a fairly bold statement, but trust me, it’s tremendous. And here’s another revelation that may rock you to your very foundation: There are other herbs and plants you can smoke or vape that are also great, and safe. I know, because I got some people to do so recently, and no one went bonkers. Not long ago, I was invited to be a guest at the Panacea dispensary in Portland, to perform a vaporizer demonstration as part of an ongoing series they’re holding called “Converse with a Nurse.” Rebecca White— an herbalist, registered nurse, and cancer survivor—hosts the series, and she’s available for conversations about health and how cannabis might be of value. I had experimented with smoking blends of non-cannabis herbs years ago when my regular weed connection moved, and I was without a dealer for a brief (but still too long) period of time. I didn’t get much more than a head rush from what I tried, and the herbs made me cough. This time, I had a list of herbs that White recommended, so I hit up the aptly named Fettle Botanic Supply & Counsel on SE Hawthorne. The staff filled my order, save for a couple herbs that were out of stock, but made some great recommendations for substitutes. When I explained what the herbs were intended for, they were nonplussed. “We frequently get people that buy certain herbs to mix with their cannabis,” said the

woman who helped me. And why wouldn’t they? Cannabis is a flowering plant rich with aromatic essential oils. That holds true for many other herbs as well, so pairing cannabis with another plant that supports its effects makes perfect sense. The herbs I brought in for the demo were a collection of common ones (sage, lavender, catnip) and less so (damiana). I also brought in a couple Herbalizer vaporizers—my desktop vape of choice—and the customers and I tried them all out. (We did NOT vape any cannabis. It’s illegal to do that in a dispensary. Much in the same way that you can’t sample a beer at a bottle shop before you buy it. Wait, what do you mean that’s not the case?) We played around with different temperature settings, starting low and gradually raising the heat. We began with the catnip, and after determining that no one had a substantially increased desire to chase around a ball of yarn, we moved through the collection of others I’d brought in. The verdict? While cannabis was still what we all wished the Herbalizer was packed with, there were noticeable effects for everyone. “I feel... better,” said one. “Not high or stoned, just... pleasant, and a little more relaxed,” volunteered another. No one got the munchies, and everyone felt clearheaded enough to operate a motor vehicle or power saw. You can try the same thing at home. While we used a vaporizer, you can smoke non-cannabis herbs in a joint, bong or pipe.

You can also mix herbs in with your weed, like a form of Cannabis Helper—I recently added some relaxing lavender to a heavy indica I vaped before bed, and crashed hard. Some herbs are motivating, some are for chilling out, and some are even reportedly aphrodisiacs. But my mom reads this, so I’m not going to offer any research here on that last category. Always buy organic and local. Everything we tried was sold in bulk, and absurdly cheap—$8 covered the tab for my six 1-ounce bags of different herbs, about what you would pay for a single gram of mid-level cannabis. (Why so cheap? Perhaps because there wasn’t a 25 percent tax on them, the growers weren’t required to pay outrageous testing fees, and no one in the federal government is equating catnip with heroin... but I digress.) Try these: ·· Lavender for reducing feelings of anxiety and promoting peaceful sleep patterns. ·· Damiana for an energetic euphoria and a libido enhancer. ·· Garden sage to boost one’s mood and ease digestive upset. ·· Catnip for its calming effect, to ease anxiety and respiratory congestion. ·· Raspberry leaf as a mood lifter, and for musculoskeletal relaxation; it’s particularly good at easing effects of menses. Avoid salvia, as it’s a powerful hallucinogenic. And by all means, ask your herbalist for suggestions. They know much more than I do. LEAFLET by Source Weekly 31
