Central Oregon’s Ever-Evolving Restaurant Scene From “appointment dining” to fast casual, takeout and delivery, our local food scene has a little of it all. If you’re finding it hard these days to keep track of what’s open, what’s recently closed and what new food places are coming onto the scene, you’re not alone. Central Oregon, as most know quite well, is a rapidly growing place, and its food scene has exploded in recent years, right along with the population. That’s why this guide you hold in your hands is so valuable: It gives you a moment to catch up with the new arrivals and remember those old favorites you’d nearly forgotten during the pandemic years. We build this guide through hard work and lots of phone calls to local establishments—and even after all that research, we still refer to the guide ourselves when we’re needing a reminder about that place we’ve long been wanting to try. Along with listings for the food carts and brick-and-mortar restaurants in Central Oregon, our annual Restaurant Guide also gives shout-outs to some of the places we believe are doing great work this year. Congrats to the Food Cart of the Year, the Rookie Cart of the Year, the Rookie Restaurant of the Year and our Restaurant of the Year! Throughout this guide, look for the truck icon to indicate which locations are food carts. And as always, remember that information, hours (and staffing situations!) can change quickly—so when in doubt, double check with the restaurant.

Look for the following icon throughout this guide! Food Truck Editor: Nicole Vulcan // Art Director/Production Manager: Jessie Czopek // Designer: Sarah Weiss // Photographer: Cj Juan, The Unique Bite Copy Editor: Richard Sitts // Sales Executives: Trinity Bradle, Ashley Sarvis, Ban Tat // Listings: Trinity Bradle, Chris Williams

ROOKIE RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR

SEN THAI NOODLES & HOT POT This year’s Rookie Restaurant of the Year turns one year old just after this Restaurant Guide comes out—and while this particular place is new this year, its owners have been around the Bend restaurant block a time or two. The Itti/Westlund family opened Sen in May 2021, roughly eight years after opening the wildly popular Wild Rose in downtown Bend. But Sen is not simply an extension of that Northern-Thai vibe at Wild Rose; instead, Sen boasts a different menu and a different atmosphere. Chatting with co-owner Rosie Westlund, we joked that Wild Rose sorta defines 2013 Bend—eclectic and casual, while Sen might define 2021/22 Bend—a tad more elevated, boasting enviable Deschutes River views, an amazing patio and a bright interior. And while the space itself makes one want to dine there, the food and drinks are still the stars of the show. Thai-style hot pot dishes offer an appointment-style dining experience—something you want to coordinate with friends to create a memorable night. Noodle dishes, noodle soups and a street food menu inspired by the informal eats of Bangkok and Chiang Mai offer a chance for passing around lots of dishes among friends.

As the restaurant evolves, the team hopes to add more creative dishes from the varying food traditions of Thailand to the menu, Westlund said. And even if the food wasn’t such a big draw, the creative cocktails are also worth making a special trip. “At Sen we have a really great bar program,” Westlund said. “Craft cocktails—everything our bar manager is producing is really great. We have a lot of customers who come because they say the drinks are so interesting.” Sen has also worked on building up a quality wine list, and also produces its own Riesling wine to pair with some of its dishes. With summer around the corner, Sen’s gorgeous patio will soon be the place to be for Deschutes River dining, encompassing all the greatest parts about Bend: Great food, delightful cocktails, an abundance of views and atmosphere… and the river, always flowing by. RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR

CHI CHINESE & SUSHI BAR Picture this: A popular local restaurant moves from its space overlooking the iconic Deschutes River to a former chain restaurant location on the edge of a shopping plaza… and then…. While it was definitely a selling point to have river views at the former Chi location, the restaurant gets Restaurant of the Year in this year’s guide precisely because somehow, it has gotten better after that view-removing move. Owners (and siblings) Di and Howie Long opened the original Chi along Newport Avenue about seven years ago, reopening in the former McGrath’s Fish House location in July 2020. Chi has always been that type of Asian-fusion restaurant where one can get a platter of delicious sushi rolls alongside (occasional) dim sum or General Tso’s chicken, or even a side of house-made kimchi. Now, though, it also wows with its eclectic atmosphere, where murals by a number of young local artists adorn the walls, and where bamboo trees help one transport from the bustle of Business 97 to a place where you want to sit and stay a while. Adding a pastry case to the entryway and seating for dozens more people has also made the place more accessible for more patrons to come and try it all out. “We have a lot of new customers that we didn’t have before in downtown, so that was a good thing. I guess we had a following that I wasn’t aware of,” said Di Long. When asked about the “secret sauce” that has contributed to Chi’s success, Long said: “We try to use the best quality stuff and give the best service that we can, obviously. I think you have to come and visit to know what sets us apart. Everybody here is really friendly and all of our staff is happy to work with us, so it shows.” CHI CHINESE AND SUSHI BAR 3118 Hwy 97, Bend 541-323-3931 bendsushi.com

ROOKIE FOOD CART OF THE YEAR

CHULITAS Food carts are often where budding restauranteurs get their start, trying out their concept without the high overhead that can come with opening a new brick-andmortar. That was the case for Chulitas—but instead of diving into the big, trailered food truck that so many start with, owners Olivia Carrasco and Edgar Tapia began with a brightly colored mini mobile cart that served aguas frescas—the fresh juice concoctions that anyone familiar with the Southern Cali dining experience will know quite well. After opening Chulitas on the streets of Bend in 2021 and gaining some traction (and followers, like me), Carrasco and Tapia added catering to their repertoire and were setting their sights on the next step. That’s when the owner of the new food cart lot, The Barn in Sisters, came in, inviting the couple to open a full-on food truck in the heart of downtown Sisters. By November 2021, Chulitas’ food cart was serving up its signature asada tacos, burritos and piles

of filling nachos to hungry patrons in Sisters. Want a pile of yummy street tacos or some esquites—the iconic Mexican street corn topped with tons of goodness? This is your go-to for Sisters. Aguas frescas are on the menu, too, of course. But this couple isn’t stopping there, either. “We wanted to expand, and we still do— even though we’re just in that one location right now, we are going to be opening our aguas frescas cart in the summer,” Carrasco told the Source. “Hopefully another food truck in Bend at one point, or we would love to open up a restaurant.” Wherever their dreams take them, Central Oregon is glad this dream started here. FOOD CART OF THE YEAR

MANZANITA GRILL In terms of growth in the food scene in Central Oregon in recent years, food carts are where it’s at. Sure, we’ve seen a host of new brick-and-mortars open up with much to-do, but food carts pop up nearly daily, giving budding restauranteurs a more accessible forum to share their talents. Tucked away next to Humm Kombucha on 2nd Street in the Bend Central District is Manzanita Grill—slowly and steadily gaining a following since its opening three years ago, even in spite of being among the handful of carts not attached to a food cart pod. At Manzanita Grill, one can enjoy a plate of mac ‘n cheese, a Mexican torta, or even a “secret menu” of chef Joaquin Lopez’s beloved tacos. Or maybe a Nashville chicken sandwich, or a Philly suits your fancy? They’ve got all that. This is the place our chef friends rave about—and while said chef friends might not relish us telling everyone about it, this is one spot those who have yet to try definitely need to. Launched by Lopez and partner Jade Sellers—two longtime restaurant professionals—

the “Southwest fusion” menu at Manzanita Grill offers a lot of the unexpected. “Let’s just pick all of our favorite foods that we love to eat—all of the best, and we’ll make a menu,” Sellers said of developing the cart’s concept. “We each picked our own things and came up with our own recipes.” What wasn’t initially on the menu, however, was much Mexican food, which Lopez grew up learning to cook from his grandmother. But one day, Lopez did tacos as a special—and customers loved it. “The Mexican food kind of grew on the menu,” Sellers said. Serving primarily a lunch crowd Monday through Friday, Manzanita Grill isn’t the fancy-night-on-the-town type of spot—but that’s just perfectly OK by us. This bustling Mexican-American bistro is conveniently located on Redmond’s main drag, yet remains one of the town’s best-kept secrets for family dining. Second place winner for Best Dinner in Redmond in our Best Of readers’ poll for 2017. The fruition of owner Pablo Pena’s dream, Madaline’s (named after his daughter) features an eclectic menu of hearty recipes gleaned his rich and varied culinary experiences. While the emphasis is certainly Mexican, Italian influences can be found in the many pasta dishes, Thai spices distinguish dishes such as the coconut shrimp, and steakhouse standards can satisfy good ol’ fashioned cravings for carne. Pena frequently revisits his childhood home in Mexico, and brings back new ideas from his mother’s traditional cooking. Particularly good is the signature item, prawns specially prepared with fresh mushrooms, onions, and green peppers, served on a bed of rice with melted Monterey Jack and a special mild sauce. Also outstanding is a seafood chimichanga, which consists of prawns, crab, sautéed veggies and sour cream served in a fried flour tortilla and covered with an absolutely delicious creamy sauce. 2414 Highway 97, madalinesgrill.com 541-548-9964.
