Martini

Several weeks back I was in Milan (I know, fancy), staring up at the Martini & Rossi building in the Piazza Armando Diaz and wondering what kind of lead time I’d need to get a reservation at its rooftop bar, serving up the most classic of bougie cocktails: the martini, of course. Milan is not the company headquarters (that’s Torino), nor did I get a seat on the rooftop that day, but I think it still inspired me to drink as many martinis as one liver can handle once I got back home. Or was it the looming sense of dread about the status of women’s rights, so recently changed upon my return? I don’t know—but when it comes to

classic cocktails, nothing seems to say “numb the pain” like a shaken tumbler of vodka, vermouth and olive juice. And in Bend, no place screams “up-glass cocktail” more than 900 Wall, also home to a happy hour that brings out the crowds. Upon request, the bartender advised me that the most classic way to order this cocktail would be with Ketel One vodka, so I did. Infused with a heavy dose of olive juice, just the way I like it, it was everything one middle-aged feminist (who thought her days of battling the patriarchy were over) needed. Cheers to needing no reservations to imbibe one classic of classics. And F the patriarchy.

DESCHUTES BREWERY PUBLIC HOUSE

While Deschutes has followed its Black Butte Porter into national prominence—and has become one of the largest breweries in the country—they have managed to never outgrow their britches. While the downtown brew-pub can be a bit dusky, it is the place to go where everyone knows your name—and even if you’re new in town or visiting, there is a familiar embrace in the air. They offer many of the beers that have made them world-famous, but the brewery also branches out with spunky seasonals like Red Chair NWPA. Mirror Pond is a textbook representation of American pale ale, and The Abyss, offered annually since 2006, is an intensely flavorful Russian imperial

stout; with blackstrap molasses, brewer’s licorice from Italy, vanilla beans and cherry bark all popping up in the ingredients; it is a deeply engaging drink. Their connection to community remains strong, with an annual artist represented on their popular Winter Jubelale bottles. Bloody Mary By Chris Williams Brief history lesson: the Bloody Mary was invented by American bartender Fernand Petiot, who was working at the famous Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in 1921. It is the concoction of Russian expats introducing vodka to western Europe, and Americans bringing over canned tomato juice after World War 1. The original mixture of just vodka and tomato juice has been expanded on to the crazy meal-in-the-pint seen today, becoming a staple in brunch culture worldwide. My love affair with the Bloody Mary started about a year ago when I woke up feeling like a ragged mountain goat who had just taken a tumble off the mountain side desperately looking for a salt lick. Maybe it was the complete depletion of electrolytes from my body, or the desire to wash the taste of Jaeger bomb from my mouth, but that morning I needed the salt. Until this day I had a disdain for Bloody Marys. I was raised a mimosa guy and always opted for the fruity side of things with brunch. But when I crawled into Corey’s that fateful morning (probably early afternoon to be more realistic) I had to have a Bloody Mary. I left that day a convert. Full blown savory connoisseur. The lime, pepper and pickled goodies floating on top finally made sense. My hangover was cured and I left the highest goat on the salt lick. Here’s to you Bloody Mary, may I find my way back to you a bleary late morning sometime soon.

14 Happy Hour Guide

Back to Basics

Screwdriver By Jared Rasic The first time I entered the D&D, it was my 21st birthday and I was deeply intimidated to set foot in the dive bar I knew had a bullet hole still in its wall somewhere. When I walked in, it was like stepping back in time to a bar in a small coal mining town from the 1920s. It was pitch black inside, with old men hunched over their cups hissing at the light from the open door…at least that’s how I saw it in 2001. The only drink I really knew how to order was a screwdriver. I had heard that vodka was the drink of champions (at least according to my grandmother) and I knew I was a big fan of orange juice, so there was really no downside to starting my career as a grownup with a combination of the two. I’ve now been drinking at the D for 20 years and I never stray

away from the screwdriver filled with plain old well vodka. Ultimately, the reasons why are simple: the D uses Takaa vodka as its well vodka, which I will always prefer to HRD or some other rotgut bottom-shelf soul destroyer, but most importantly, because the D pours drinks like it’s the last one you’ll ever have. The orange juice is just a splash for color. It’s mostly just a pint of vodka and it tastes like adulthood. The demographic for the D skews younger now in 2022, with the kids that don’t have the $15 for a signature cocktail somewhere else downtown and just want something stiff that tastes like poor decisions. I notice them and they notice me, old and hunched over my cups.

The Simple Nostalgia of Rum & Coke By Jack Harvel

Back to Basics

The first drink I ever had was the simple mix of rum and Coke. I was huddled in a basement with some friends with a bottle of rum we stole from my parents’ liquor cabinet and a 12-pack of Coke. Is it the best mixed drink? No, but best mixed drink isn’t the theme of our little cocktail stories — the theme is classic, simple drinks. And what could be more classic than my first drink, and simpler than a mixture of rum and Coke? With a drink picked out I headed downtown around 9 pm and stopped at JC’s Bar and Grill. The rum and coke there is strong, definitely stronger than the ones my friends and I made when we were 15. Even though I didn’t make it for JC’s Happy Hour from 3-6 pm, the drinks were cheap, the music was loud and the pool tables, arcade games and lottery kept the young crowd busy. JC’s is a great spot to end a night of bar hopping but could just as easily keep a group occupied for

the whole night. There’s a good selection of beer, specialty cocktails and a menu that appeals to people who’ve had plenty of beer and specialty cocktails. As I sipped on my rum and Coke, a song from Good Charlotte’s sophomore album, “The Young and the Hopeless,” started playing. That’s the first album I ever bought, and there I was 20 years later listening to it while sipping on the first drink I ever had. I don’t listen to Good Charlotte anymore, and for the most part don’t drink rum and Cokes anymore. Both feel a little childish to me; Good Charlotte with its pop music disguised under a thin veneer of punk aesthetic, and rum and Coke with its sweet, sugary taste overshadowing the poison called rum. Still, the nostalgia was getting to me, and on the way home I picked up some Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and listened to the newest Good Charlotte single.
