Fall Drinks: The Simple Black Coffee
By Jack HarvelFall brings a whole slew of season al coffees. It’s not just pumpkin spice; coffee nerds have a bunch of fall fla vors they bring out for spooky season infusing cinnamon, pecan, caramel apple and more. I, however, am not a coffee nerd — I drink Red Bull most mornings, for Christ’s sake. I’ve never drunk anything that’s been delicate ly poured to look like a leaf. I’ve had espresso maybe twice in my life. The only coffee in my cabinet is a stale Costco-brand roast.
So, when my editor tasked me with a coffee write-up, I’m not going to lie—I was at a loss. I’ll drink the stuff but only to satiate my ruinous ad diction to caffeine. I said f--- all this seasonal nonsense, I’m going to get a black coffee and I’m going to get it from somewhere that’s one of the best at their craft in Bend: Lone Pine Coffee Roasters.
Ordering a black coffee from Lone Pine is almost embarrassing. You can see people in the back of the store working with massive sacks of high-quality coffee beans sourced from around the world. There are delicious pastries on display. Work ers behind the counter are operating mystery machines that I assume make the fancier coffees that I’m not getting. When my order is just a pour from a pot, I feel like I’m missing out on some serious fanfare.
But, like I said, I’m no coffee nerd. Coffee is fuel, the kind of fuel I need to write articles about things I have no idea about. And this fuel did exactly what was needed. Before I knew it I typed 300 words about my mundane experience buying a black coffee and my eye was twitching. I’m not the best judge of what makes a good coffee, but can say Lone Pine is definitely a better brewer than whoever fills the pot at the office, than me brewing on
my $20 coffee machine and better than the McDonald’s workers brewing McCafe.
Oregon native. This pair somehow created delicious vegan southern style dishes, well worth a try or two... you probably won’t believe it’s vegan.

Low Key and Delicious at Los Jalapenos breakfast Burrito Roundup
By Nicole VulcanNot too long ago, I found myself waiting for a breakfast burrito outside a makeshift window, wind whipping around me while I dreamed of bacon, eggs, grilled peppers and salsa. I’d biked there, so there was no choice but to wait out in the wind. These were the lengths I would go to in order to get my breakfast-burrito fix at Los Jalapeños. It was the height of the pandemic. Some businesses were open only for takeout; oth ers were forced to shut their doors. Los Jalapeños, a longtime staple of Mexican food in Bend, made it work by opening up a window on the side of its building, serving up its bags of takeout from, literally, a take out window, a set of temporary steps
allowing patrons to reach up and grab the goods.
Los Jalapeños serves food all day long, six days a week, but for me the breakfast burritos are the star of the show. I like the Bell Burrito with bacon, featuring a healthy dose of the meat alongside yum my grilled peppers and onions, hash browns, two eggs and cheese. I’ve even been known to leave downtown Bend during the workday— where we have a wealth of food options—just to grab a breakfast burrito from this spot.
Chef and owner Gonzalo Morales has been serving his recipes to Bend since opening Los Jalapeños in 1994, so on top of being my personal favor
ite for breakfast burritos, it’s clear that many other Bendites have long chosen this place as their go-to.
Today the takeout window is gone and we’re once again able to grab food from Jalapeños’ low-key indoor food counter, taking it home or deciding to hang out on its inviting, shaded patio to marry burritos with a margarita or mi chelada. Oh wait—we’re talking about breakfast burritos here… so in order to maintain some type of dignity, forget that I ever suggested that my breakfast burrito also occasionally comes with a breakfast marg. Who does that??

breakfast Burrito Roundup
Bend Breakfast Burrito’s Meteoric Rise
By Jack HarvelBend Breakfast Burrito started in 2021 and quickly became a town favorite, snagging the win for Best Breakfast Burrito in the Source Weekly’s annual Best Of poll. Starting as a catering and delivery service, the business would even tually find its current home at Boss Rambler on Galveston in Bend.
Bend Breakfast Burrito quickly be came a Bend favorite because it kept
it simple and specialized. You want a lunchtime burrito, go somewhere else, but if you want the most important meal of the day to go a long way you’re picking up one of their bacon breakfast burritos — or chorizo, or one of their bowls or vegetarian if you’re into that sort of thing. It also helps that they’ve got three great salsas to drown your burritos. My go-to is equal parts avocado crema and the spicy red salsa, but the tomatillo green salsa also has

Olive Garden

By Nicole VulcanSuperfans of the Source Weekly may remember one issue in the fall of 2016, when we poked a bit of fun at the Pumpkin Spice Latte by superim posing a #PSL “tattoo” on the arm of designer Annelie Kahn for that week’s cover. Since then, it seems that the PSL phenomenon has only gotten more in tense. There are the typical knockoffs, such as PSL-flavored ice cream and cof fee creamer (for the at-home cheapos who listen to their financial advisors). There are the marginally tasty-sound ing items including PSL granola bars and PSL cider. And then there are the downright WTF PSL food items, such as PSL kale chips, PSL marshmallows and PSL dog treats. I mean, WTF. This kind of stuff makes me want to be like Source Reporter Jack Harvel and only laud the coffee that comes dark and black and dangerous.
A pumpkin spice latte, to me, con jures images of a certain Bend-mom archetype in autumn: Tall boots, a flowy sweater, a Havstad hat, a doodle dog in
one hand and the PSL in the other. But not being one to capitulate to the other Bend-mom cliché—the one who wears thrift-store clothes, smokes weed to cope (while off the clock, of course) and drives a van they may have to live in one day, I decided to grab a PSL of my own one recent fall day.
Backporch Coffee Roasters always serves up a solid cup of the dark-andblack type, so in there I went, scrunch ing up my shoulders to appear as self-deprecating as possible while or dering fall’s cliché drink.
Backporch’s PSL has the required flavor of pumpkin and fall spices—cin namon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger—but isn’t too heavy on any of them. Nor is it too cloyingly sweet; just the right amount of perky flavor and sweetness to make me think it could rival my regular drink once in a while. It may be the fall cli ché to beat all fall clichés, but sometimes, cliches exist for a reason. In any case, it does not appear that PSL is quiet-quit ting the Bend scene any time soon.

Strictly the yummiest Breakfast Burrito
By Allie NolandIt may not be the first place you think of when you think of burritos, but it’s a go-to spot to satisfy the big breakfast burrito craving that ev eryone experiences.
Anytime I walk by, drive by or go into Strictly Or ganic, I almost always see people leaving the shop with a smile on their face and a big bur rito in hand. This break fast burrito brings more joy than should be allowed.
Located in between Downtown Bend and the Old Mill, Strictly Organic is in the most ideal spot for a quick breakfast or lunch. The menu features a variety of
options, including rice bowls, salads, soups, bagels and sandwiches. But, the reigning champ of the menu is the breakfast burrito.
It’s simple. It’s fast. It’s delicious. It’s satisfying. It’s right near the Box Factory.
Ringing in at $8, the classic burrito serves as the base to all the tasty variations, with two eggs, potatoes, cheese and your choice of red or green salsa. From there, you can elevate your morning/midday feast by ordering the ham, turkey ba con, veggie, vegan, soy sausage or the
bronco breakfast burrito.
Wondering what the best order is? The veggie burrito with green salsa on a flour tortilla is hard to beat, but you might have to go try one for yourself.
After the first bite, you’ll fall for the simplicity and mastery of the Strict ly Organic breakfast burrito. Layered with eggs scrambled to perfection, melty cheese and hearty potatoes, it is the best way to start your morning if you wake up with a burrito-sized hole in your stomach.

Burrito Sunrise is a Lifeboat Meal breakfast Burrito Roundup
By Nicole VulcanBeing a work hard-play hard type of crew here at the Source Weekly, we fairly regularly find ourselves, after one of Bend’s many awesome concerts happening on a “school night,” needing the heavy sustenance that a breakfast burrito provides. With that, it didn’t take this crew long to discover the bright yellow truck on Greenwood Av enue that serves up delicious versions of our favorite hangover food. After a stint near Fitness 1440, Burrito Sunrise parked out front of the Midtown Ball room (coincidentally, where we some times find ourselves for a school-night concert) in March of 2021, and by April 2021, Source staffer Ban Tat and I were pretty regular customers—enough so that I wrote a review of the place in April 2021.
Here I am again, writing about this place for our breakfast-burrito round up in the Breakfast and Lunch Guide, because it’s still just as good as it was back then.
Owner Devin Kennedy calls his burritos “Cali fornia-style,” in reference to the salsas he serves with heavy doses of garlic and on ions, blending them with vinegar and oil until they’re emulsified into yum my goodness. The potatoes are both creamy and crispy, and the meats come in hearty chunks—all the flavors meld ing into one special offering. For those eschewing meat, the veggie option is also filling and delicious, with chipotle black beans adding plenty of depth.
This friendly neighborhood bar and grill in Redmond hosts Karaoke Wednesday and Thursday nights, as well as a DJ or live band on Saturdays and Sundays at 8pm-close.

Fall Drinks: A Splash of Flavor at The Commons
By Allie NolandHolding a hot, spicy, sweet drink in hand while walking in the chilly weather is a feel ing that’s hard to beat when rounding up fall activities. It’s a simple pleasure that we forget about in the spring and summer months.
This autumn season is all about drinks with a splash of fall flavor—and not the syrupy sweet tooth overload of pumpkin spice. When I drink coffee in the mornings, I want to taste it and feel the energy of the fresh brew.
Fall is a fantastic excuse to add a little sweetener to your morning and to explore new flavors, like cardamom, cinnamon, maple, brown butter, nut meg and more. It’s about highlighting the coffee flavor, not masking it.
The Commons Cafe, tucked in the trees by the river in downtown Bend, serves hot coffee and a wide selection of teas from 8am-8pm every day in the historic Rademach er House. If you want to feel like you’re soaking up all that this autumn season has to offer, this coffee shop is where you must go.
With vintage couches and chairs, hanging indoor plants, a river view and an opportunity to watch the changing colors of the leaves through the big windows, The Commons Cafe serves as a cozy spot to enjoy sweater weather.
This spot has many fall flavors for customers to enjoy, including carda mom rose, lavender and its very own pumpkin spice. Order your favorite
drink, whether it be an Americano, latte, black coffee, white tea or iced coffee, and ask for a splash of your fa vorite fall flavor. A touch of sweetness will go a long way.
Don’t immediately lurch for the pumpkin spice latte this fall. Local cof fee shops take the time to curate in novative drink menus for the autumn season, and it’s worth checking out. Ask for an extra hot latte with a splash of cardamom rose, grab a spot, read a book and glance out to the color of falling leaves.
