‘The Music Man’ headed to Shryock CARBONDALE — A Tony Awardwinning musical has been announced as the latest stage show headed to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The national touring production of “The Music Man” will take the stage at Shryock Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2. Tickets for the performance go on sale to the general public at noon Monday, Dec. 13. Tickets can be purchased at Southern TicketsOnline.com or by calling 618-453-6000. Star Club members will receive a $3 discount on tickets. “The Music Man,” the story of fasttalking traveling salesman Harold Hill, is filled with memorable and timeless
songs including “Ya Got Trouble (in River City),” “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Goodnight My Someone,” “Gary, Indiana” and “Till There Was You.” The show won five Tony Awards, including best musical, when it opened on Broadway in 1957. A 1962 film adaptation starred Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. In the story, Hill dupes the people of River City, Iowa, into buying musical instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize. His plans to skip town with the cash he’s made are thrown into chaos when he falls in love with Marian, the town librarian. BY ADAM TESTA THE SOUTHERN
PADUCAH — Upon graduating from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, this spring, Nikki Bohne set out following the footsteps of so many aspiring actresses before her.
She packed her bags and moved to New York with only very few contacts and one prevalent ambition — to perform on a Broadway stage. “It wasn’t a goal or a plan,” Bohne said. “It was a dream, and I wasn’t sure if it was even an attainable dream.” But within weeks of arriving in the Big Apple, the young actress found herself auditioning for a familiar role — a character on a journey to overcome the odds. Ultimately, she was selected for the role and has been performing on Broadway and touring as Elle Woods in the musical adaptation of the 2001 film “Legally Blonde.” The musical, which
comes to The Carson Center in Paducah for a 7:30 p.m. performance tonight, follows the same premise as the movie. Woods, a stereotyped attractive blonde, follows her ex-boyfriend to law school in an attempt to win his heart back and discovers that she may be more savvy and intelligent than anyone had imagined. “She definitely ends up proving she’s more than a dumb blonde, and she ends up on top,” Bohne said. Just like Woods, the Utah native has had to adjust to her own life changes as she’s headed out on the road, living out of a suitcase and spending several hours each week on a bus. Spending time with her co-stars and the crew, who
have become close friends, helps make the time on the road easier, she said. And a certain group of colleagues stand out from the pack — and they do so on four legs. Chico and Roxy are two of the Chihuahuas who play the role of Bruiser, Woods’ loyal companion, in the musical. For Bohne, they also make wonderful travel partners. And both of them, along with the other canines who fill the role, have their own stories to share, as they were all rescued from shelters. “They’re the real Cinderella story,” Bohne said. “They went from rags to riches. They went from being beaten and abused to being Broadway stars.” adam.testa@thesouthern.com

Five local authors to sign Easton Corbin to play HerrinFesta 2011 their works at Bookworm MARION — Five authors of books about Southern Illinois history will join together for a special signing event this weekend. Marion historian Jon Musgrave will appear at the Bookworm store in the Illinois Centre mall from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 11. John Griswold, William Iseminger, Bonney Hogue Patterson and Kay Rippelmeyer will appear from 1 to 4 p.m. Musgrave has just published “Secrets of the Herrin Gangs,” an inside account of Bloody Williamson by gangster Ralph Johnson and annotated by Musgrave. The book retails for $10. His other works include “The Bloody Vendetta of Southern Illinois,” “Slaves, Salt, Sex and Mr. Crenshaw: The Real Story of the Old Slave House,” and “The Handbook of Old Gallatin County.” Griswold, who grew up in Herrin and now teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois, is most recently the author of “Herrin: The Brief History of an Infamous American City,” which sells for $20. He has also written “Ghosts of Democracy,” a novel based on the 1922 Herrin Massacre. Iseminger, assistant site manager at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Park, is the author of “Cahokia Mounds: America’s First City.” He has worked at the site for nearly four decades, which helps him tell the story of the place and it’s ancient and contemporary cultures with clarity and confidence. That book
sells for $20. Patterson’s new book, “Hunted in the Heartland,” is a memoir of her neighbor’s 1978 murder in Marion, which went unsolved for 20 years until a police investigation connected the murder to serial killer Timothy Krajcir. The book tells the story of Krajcir’s life and his victims and ends with his April 2008 conviction in federal court. The book’s price tag is $12.50. Rippelmeyer’s large format book, “Giant City State Park and the Civilian Conservation Corps,” focuses on the development of the park in the 1930s and tells the story through the eyes of the men who were part of the project. The hardcover edition sells for $35 and the paperback retails for $20. — Adam Testa
Nearly six months before the gates are scheduled to swing open, organizers for Herrinfesta Italiana have secured a major country act for the 2011 celebration. Easton Corbin, who reached the top of the charts with his first two singles “A Little More Country than That” and “Roll With It,” has been signed to appear on May 29. “We have already logged hundreds of hours planning for the 2011 festival,” said Jim Gentile, executive director of the event. “We have looked at many acts, and there are not many out there that have had back-to-back No. 1 records. Easton Corbin is an outstanding talent and he gives us a solid foundation to build on.” Gentile said ticket prices have not been established and a date for tickets to go on sale has yet to be determined. A University of Florida graduate, Corbin migrated to Nashville in 2006 from his native Florida. He worked at Ace Hardware during the day to finance his musical endeavors, eventually signing with Mercury Records in 2009. Corbin became Mercury’s best selling debut artist in seven years when his self-titled album sold 43,000 units

Blend, a Southern Illinois-based a cappella group, will be performing its first full Christmasthemed concert event, ‘A Doo Wop Christmas,’ later this month at the Varsity Center for the Arts in Carbondale. Shows are scheduled for Dec. 17, 18 and 23. The members are Johnathan Estes (clockwise, from left), Andrew Smith, Joe Woodard and Anthony Deaton.
time, we really need to be thankful for things,” he said. Before these performances have even begun, the members of Blend have already begun preliminary discussions about the possibilities for next year’s Christmas season. Estes said he would like to see the group find a regular home for the season and perform more than just three shows, possibly performing nightly for the two weeks leading into Christmas. And if the organization running the Varsity Center for the Arts would be interested, Estes said they’d be thrilled to use that venue as a seasonal home, as
they’re excited about their upcoming performances there. “We were looking for a venue that was smaller but still had elegance,” Estes said. “It just has an at-home feel to it.” Having a local venue would also help keep Blend in Southern Illinois. In the past few years, they’ve negotiated deals for full-time set-ups in Branson and Hannibal, Mo., and Paducah, but not taken any offers. Instead, they remain based in the region where they began, touring on weekend during the spring, fall and winter and full time during the summer. Looking back at the beginning when the group formed at John A. Logan College as an entrant for the HerrinFesta talent show, Estes expresses his amazement at how far Blend has come and how it’s members — now including about 13 alumni — have evolved through the past five and half years. Pop The Black Eyed Peas “The Beginning” ** After the painfully dumb but multiplatinum “Monkey Business” in 2005, the Black Eyed Peas got it right with last year’s winningly dumb and even more multi-platinum “The E.N.D.,” perhaps the most successful hip-hop album ever to hit the bar mitzvah

What made “The E.N.D.” work was the way will.i.am took his concise and inherently optimistic raps straight to the dance floor, making the Peas over as an Auto-Tuned electro-dancepop band that went “Boom Boom Pow,” both figuratively and literally. Not surprisingly, “The Beginning” follows “The E.N.D.” with the same

Michael Logen will take the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at Rustle Hill Winery, 8595 U.S. 51. Growing up in a Mennonite family in Pennsylvania, Logen began playing piano at age 6, guitar at 8 and writing and performing at 13.
After high school and some touring, he moved to Nashville, where he attended college and pursued his dream of being a musician. In 2005, he backpacked through Europe, where he wrote most of the songs for his debut album, “Things I Failed to Mention,” which was released in June 2007. Songs from that release were featured on MTV’s

Ions’ works on display at Carbondale Civic Center CARBONDALE — A display of paintings by Southern Illinois artist George Ions will remain on display at the Carbondale Civic Center Corridor Gallery through the end of the year. Born in County Durham, England, George Ions took early retirement to move to the United States and focus on his paintings in a personal studio. He had been drawing and painting throughout his life, including being influenced by visiting the workshop of renowned painter Edward Seago, who became an influence for his own work. Ions calls his work the “Art of the Imagination and Color” and the variety of his subjects is a reflection of what stimulates his interests or imagination at any given time. His work has been displayed in the United States and Europe. — Adam Testa
