How to Choose the Right Service Department I

f your car needs repairs or service -and they all do eventually -- it pays to shop around before you need a mechanic's help.

Find out if this facility will use brand-name parts, which are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and might come with a warranty. Your auto repair shop might also employ technicians who are certified by a car manufacturer or the National Institute for Automotive Service (ASE). If they do, they will display the ASE symbol.

If you line up a service department before your car needs any servicing, you won’t be pressed by an urgent need to have something fixed. Remember that spending on maintenance will help you keep your car running longer, ensure you of a smooth ride and help you to stay within your budget.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Some service departments feel that at least 60 percent of all new customers come to them because of a recommendation from a coworker, friend, relative or neighbor. If this isn't the case with you, ask the service writer you consult for references. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau in your area to determine if a service department’s reliability and performance measure up to appropriate standards of technical expertise and professionalism. These are the factors you should

always consider before going to the service department offering the lowest price. If you travel extensively, find a service department offering a national warranty, which usually covers labor and parts for 12,000 miles or 12 months. Also, if the service department doesn’t have the advanced equipment needed to diagnose your car’s problems in the 21st century, this might mean you have gone to the wrong place.

To ensure your peace of mind, look for a service department offering an acceptable customer satisfaction policy, and do your part by giving the service technician enough time to do the job properly. When choosing a site, pay attention to the condition of the equipment, the lighting, organization and cleanliness. Determine if the service department can provide a range of services, including

work on electrical and brake systemsl. Ask if they have weekend and evening hours, and if they will do repairs under your warranty, if you have one. Some facilities provide loaner cars, offer onsite car rental or provide a shuttle to bring you to and from work while they are working on your car. Comparison shop for the usual services a service department performs, including tune-ups, so you can find a facility that is in

AAA approval is another good sign, because this indicates that the shop’s customers were surveyed and have given the site an approval rating of 90 percent or better. You also will know they are prepared to handle the jobs they claim they can do. After you have made your choice, make an effort to establish a good working relationship with them, and remember that preventive maintenance is the goal here, just as it is in maintaining your health. Doing this will also prove to be less costly. For a “trial run,” visit the service department to have an oil change or a check-up on your air-conditioning or brake system.
