Welcome to the greatest get-together in Southern Illinois: The Du Quoin State Fair. During the run of the fair, we will roll out the red carpet of fun and enjoyment, providing our visitors with an opportunity to be entertained and educated from morning until late into the night. Whether it’s the roar of the crowd inside the Illinois Lottery Grandstand as some of the greatest songs and music in America are being played, or the screams of children being thrilled on some of the biggest carnival rides in the country, the Du Quoin State Fair has a rich history of being one of the happiest spots on Earth. Throughout our 1,400-acre fairgrounds, you will find hundreds of events — many that are free of charge — including horse and livestock competitions, expositions, car shows and some incredible, breathtaking events, such as our Hollywood stunt drivers. Also, don’t forget for the first three days of the fair, families can have their photo taken with the lovable Lightning McQueen. This year’s theme is “Wheels and Deals.” Put yourself in motion and enjoy everything the Du Quoin State Fair has to offer, as we continue to make it affordable and fun. As manager of the Du Quoin State Fair, I am pleased you are here and welcome you back as often as you can return throughout the festivities. Fairgoers enjoy a break in the weather at the Du Quoin State Fair on Sept. 2, 2012. Th e S

At the Du Quoin State Fair, ‘Anything’s Possible’ Overview

Four major names performing free concerts Is it possible four major concerts will have free admission at this year’s Du Quoin State Fair? With the support of Illinois Lottery and a handful of local sponsors, including Continental Tire of Mount Vernon, anything is possible, said John Rednour Jr., manager of the Du Quoin State Fair. “This is an incredible opportunity for Southern Illinois,” he said. “Thanks to these great sponsors, we are not charging $60 a ticket like it would take to attend one of these shows almost anywhere else in this country; we are offering them for free.” The free shows include Gretchen Wilson and Darryl Worley at the grandstand and Aaron Tippin and Uncle Kracker in the beer tent. “It’s taken some major financial backing to make this happen, and I can’t begin tell you how proud we are of the sponsors who stepped up,” Rednour said. Sponsors include the Illinois Lottery, Black Diamond Harley-Davidson, Jackson Pools and Spas, Pass One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning, Continental Tire, Peoples National Bank, the Cellular Connection and Republic Services. Thanks to Black Diamond Harley-Davidson and Jackson Pools and Spas, Uncle Kracker, an American rock musician known for his singles “Follow Me,” “Smile” and “Drift Away,” will play free in the beer tent at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23. “Uncle Kracker is extremely popular in Southern Illinois, and the crowd that turned out for this show two years ago proved it,” Rednour said. “We heard from a lot of people who said we should have him back.” On Sunday, Aug. 25, country music sensation Darryl Worley, whose hits include “I Miss My Friend,” “Have You Forgotten” and “Awful, Beautiful Life,” will play free in the Illinois Lottery Grandstand during the fair’s second Veterans Appreciation Night. The show includes a fireworks display after the concert. “Every person in Southern Illinois and all

surrounding areas needs to be here for this show,” Rednour said. “This is a chance to show your deep appreciation for the freedoms of this great nation of ours and to salute the men and women who have fought and are fighting to keep us free. I cannot emphasize enough that this is a show you don’t want to miss.” Francis Pass, owner of Pass One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning; Continental Tire of Mount Vernon; Peoples National Bank of Southern Illinois, and the Cellular Connection in Du Quoin are sponsors of the Darryl Worley concert. On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the “Redneck Woman” herself, Gretchen Wilson, is coming to Du Quoin. “This is a hometown girl, a Southern Illinois born and raised musician who made it big in country music,” Rednour said. “Who hasn’t heard Gretchen’s Grammy Award-winning single ‘Redneck Woman?’ That song became a national sensation. She has followed that up with another 13 singles that made the Billboard country charts.” The Illinois Lottery is sponsoring the Gretchen Wilson show as part of the Illinois Lottery’s Anything’s Possible Music Series that will be taking place throughout the state. “When a large group of friends and neighbors in Pocahontas won $1,000,000 in last year’s St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle, we had no idea that our relationship with that beautiful community would extend to the star attraction at the Lottery stage,” said Michael Jones, superintendent of the Illinois Lottery. “We’re proud to be ‘here for the party.’ “ “Everyone knows her as the ‘Redneck Woman,’” Rednour said. Wilson, 39, grew up in Pocahontas, a rural Southern Illinois

community, with only the support of her mother. She dropped out of school at age 15 and began working as a cook and bartender. “Gretchen Wilson is an American success story,” Rednour said. “She overcame great odds to become a star.” On Sunday, Sept. 1, country music star Aaron Tippin will play in the beer tent, thanks to a sponsorship from Republic Services. Tippin is known for his singles “You’ve Got to Stand for Something,” Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly” and “Kiss This.” “This is going to be another great show and a great way to start winding down the fair,” Rednour said. “Aaron Tippin has charted more than 30 singles. Of his nine studio albums, five have gold certifications and one has a platinum certification.” Tippin will perform at 10 p.m.

Leading the pack: Disney’s Lightning McQueen serving as parade marshal Southern Illinoisans are in for a special treat as a famous 800-horsepower racecar will serve as the fair’s parade marshal on Friday, Aug. 23. “For the first time in the fair’s history, we are going to have something other than a person serve as parade marshal,” said fair organizer Shannon Woodworth. “We are very excited to announce that our parade marshal will be none other than the Lightning McQueen car.” Lightning McQueen is an animated Disney character, but animation became a live creation when the Lightning McQueen car was built. The car resides in Illinois at the Volo Auto Museum. “Lightning McQueen is a red-blooded race car,” said Volo Museum Director Brian Grams. “Built to NASCAR specs, it is a full-blown, ready-torace muscle machine with an 800-horsepower Chevy V8 engine and fourspeed transmission. It has a fully caged chassis, special race seats, radio communications, four-wheel disc brakes, adjustable suspension and much more. In fact, everything you would expect to see on Dale (Earnhardt) Jr.’s car.” Following the parade, the car will be placed on display at the fair through Sunday, Aug. 25. Weeks of West Frankfort is sponsoring Lightning McQueen’s visit. “I think there will be a lot of children and other fair visitors who will want to have their picture taken with this car,” Fair Manager John Rednour Jr. said. “It’s one of a kind, and, as many people know, Lightning McQueen Provided by Scott Richa has worldwide popularity.” rd

Harness Racing Countless men and women have spent innumerable hours building the reputation of the Du Quoin State Fair to its present status. Of course, there were a few animals that played their parts, as well. Since the fair’s earliest days, horse racing has been an integral part of the equation. Racers and riders of all backgrounds and varieties have made their way around the tracks on the fairground, competing both for pride and monetary stakes. The fair has hosted major racing events, smallscale competitions and everything in between. The Hambletonian and World Trotting Derby once called Du Quoin home, and, today, the tradition continues in the form of three days of harness racing. Races take center stage as the grandstand entertainment on Friday, Aug. 23. They begin at 7 p.m. on the Magic Mile track. Harness racing continues at noon Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25. These days feature the fair’s high-stake prizes.

Muscle Hill makes his way down the final stretch en route to winning the World Trotting Derby on Sept. 5, 2009, at the Du Quoin State Fair.

The title of country music star Billy Currington’s new album says it all. The Georgia native’s “Enjoy Yourself” sums up his philosophy as a musician. “That’s what I want people to think about doing when they hear my music,” he said. “I want them to have a good time.” Currington’s four-record résumé has landed him nine Billboard Hot Country singles, with six of them topping the charts. His topranking songs include “Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer,” “That’s How Country Boys Roll,” “People Are Crazy,” “Don’t,” “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” and “Good Directions.” He’s also appeared on the country charts with “Party for Two,” a duet with Shania Twain, and his own non-album single “Tangled Up.” Fairgoers will have the opportunity to join Currington’s party at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, when he takes to the grandstand stage. Sunday Aug. 25 Darryl Worley performs ‘Have You Forgotten’ at the 38th annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas in 2003. He will do it again on the grandstand stage Aug. 25, and it’s free.

Darryl Worley In 2003, country music artist Darryl Worley asked the world a heart-wrenching question, “Have You Forgotten?” The top song of that year, off an album of the same name, invoked memories and paid tribute to those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington. The tune became Worley’s second No. 1 hit, reaching the top of the charts five weeks after its release and holding its position for the next seven weeks. Today, the song remains a popular memorial and tribute to one of the darkest days in

American history. Worley has also amassed other hit songs, including two other chart-toppers in “I Miss My Friend” and “Awful, Beautiful Life.” Nine other songs have appeared on the Top 40. It’s a likely bet Worley will perform those top songs and many more when he takes to the grandstand at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, for a free concert, part of the fair’s Veterans Appreciation Night. A fireworks display will be presented after the concert.

One of the rare acts that actually became a star directly from winning “Star Search,” country-rocker group Sawyer Brown has enjoyed a long, hit-filled career. A self-titled debut album was released in 1985, and debut single “Leona” climbed into the Top 20. Its follow-up, “Step That Step,” went all the way to No. 1, and the album fell just short, landing at No. 2. That was just the beginning for Sawyer Brown, however, as the group continued producing chart-dominating tunes. Sophomore album, “Shakin’,” produced another top-five single in “Betty’s Bein’ Bad.” To date, Sawyer Brown has released more than 20 album and more than 25 Top 20 singles. The band has been recognized with several awards, beginning with the 1985 Country Music Association Horizon Award. Sawyer Brown will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the grandstand. Tickets are $20 and $25. Lee Roy Parnell and Grace Askew are the opening acts.

Matt Maher’s career has taken him a long way from the hotel piano where his musical journey began. A native of Newfoundland, Canada, Maher’s parents recognized his talents early in life and enrolled him in piano lessons. The young boy explored a wide range of music, playing in concert and jazz ensemble, singing in choir and performing with a garage rock band. He started his collegiate studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland but left Canada after receiving a scholarship from the jazz department at Arizona State University. In Phoenix, he funded the first three years of his schooling by playing piano in a hotel. Wednesday Aug. 28 Gretchen Wilson performs at the 50th Grammy Celebration Concert Tour presented by T-MOBILE SIDEKICK with Kid Rock at Granada Theater in Dallas in 2008. She will perform Aug. 28 at the grandstand. The concert is free.

Gretchen Wilson The Du Quoin State Fair isn’t quite a homecoming for country music’s mostrenowned “Redneck Woman,” but it’s pretty close. Gretchen Wilson was raised in the small Bond County town of Pocahontas. Born to a 16-year-old mother and a father

18 Du Quoin State Fair : Summer 2013

who abandoned them shortly thereafter, she certainly didn’t have the life of a princess. She and her mother lived in a trailer park; her mom worked as a waitress, and Wilson dropped out of school at 15 to help support the family. She began singing at bars in the St. Louis area, and, at age 18, she was discovered by a Springfield, Mo., bar owner and asked to come play at her venue six nights a week. After two years of doing so, Wilson moved back home to Pocahontas and then traveled to Nashville. Success soon followed. Wilson’s 2004

debut, “Redneck Woman,” became a No. 1 Billboard Country hit and earned the newcomer a Grammy Award. When she released the follow-up album, “All Jacked Up,” she made history, as the title track became the highest-debuting single for a female country artist. In total, she has charted 13 singles; five have reached the Top 10. Among her other hit songs were “Here for the Party,” “When I Think about Cheatin’” and “Homewrecker.” Wilson performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the grandstand. The concert is free.

OPEN HOUSE

Theory of a Deadman will perform Aug. 29 at the grandstand.

Theory of a Deadman Honesty is always the best policy, and rock band Theory of a Deadman adheres to that age-old adage on the band’s fourth album, “The Truth Is …” The platinum-selling Vancouver quartet builds arena-ready hooks around hard-rocking stories of good times, bad times and everything in between. “Lowlife” is a raucous anthem celebrating simple pleasures, while “Hurricane” stirs up a storm of emotions over an orchestral hum of guitars and massive chorus. Then there’s “Head Above Water,” which delivers an uplifting, contemplative message encased in mid-tempo rhythms. The band is signed to Roadrunner Records, as well as Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger’s 604 Records. The song “Head Above Water” was featured on the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” soundtrack in 2011. Theory of a Deadman takes the grandstand stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. Tickets are $20 and $25. Trapt will open the concert.

Friday Aug. 30 Eddie Montgomery (left) and Troy Gentry perform as Montgomery Gentry at Walker’s Bluff in Carterville last year. The duo will perform Aug. 30.

Montgomery Gentry Sometimes, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. When Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry united, they found a musical formula that worked much better than respective singles efforts. The two began performing together in the 1990s as part of two different bands with Montgomery’s brother. Gentry won a talent contest in 1994 but reunited with Montgomery after failing to find a solo record deal. Collectively, they

became known as Montgomery Gentry in 1999 and have spent the past 15 years securing their place in country music history. The duo has released six studio albums and produced 18 Top 20 hits, including five charttoppers. Their most successful singles are “If You Ever Stop Loving Me,” “Something To Be Proud Of,” “Lucky Man,” “Back When I Knew It All” and “Roll with Me.” Both the Country Music Association and

Academy of Country Music recognized Montgomery Gentry with Duo of the Year awards in 2000. They’ve been nominated for the same award from both organizations every year since then, too. In 2009, the two singers were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. Montgomery Gentry performs at the grandstand at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30. Tickets are $30 and $35. Drew Baldridge will be the opening act.

Du Quoin State Fair : Summer 2013 25

Forty years ago, the members of Kansas set out with a simple mission statement. “From the beginning, we considered ourselves and our music different, and we hope we will always remain so.” Little did the legendary rock group realize back in the early 1970s, what seemed to be different was actually ahead of its time. The band has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-platinum records, one platinum album and a million-selling gold single, “Dust in the Wind.” Kansas appeared on the Billboard charts for Kansas will perfo more than 200 weeks throughout the rm Aug. 31 at th e Du Quoin Stat e Fair. For many racing competitors, a victory in front of thousands at the fair will be a career milestone. For others, it’s only the beginning, a step toward a national championship or the first major win of what they hope will be a long and glorious career. Auto racing continues for a second day on Monday, Sept. 2, with a 100-mile contest sponsored by the Automobile Racing Club of America. The 60th Federated-Southern Illinois 100 and 18th Oldani Memorial will be part of ARCA’s UMP DirtCar Modified Series. Qualifying begins at 11 a.m. with racing starting at 12:15 p.m. at the Magic Mile track at the grandstand. Tickets are $25 for adults in advance, or $30 day of show, and $10 for children.
