FOR THE SOUTHERN

After two years of dedication and renovation, the owners of Kokopelli Golf Club and Restaurant are enjoying a boost in golf memberships and customer enthusiasm. It hasn’t been easy. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but we’re growing,” said David Hays, president of Kokopelli ownership, Green Grass Group. “When we took it over, we had 70or 80-member lines. The place had deteriorated and was on the brink of going under. Now we’re back up to 160 members … People are taking notice of the changes.” Creating a dining environment that was still

friendly to club golfers, yet offered an accessible option for the general public, was a priority for the new owners at Kokopelli. And although golf is still largely the focal point of activity, the clubhouse restaurant is deservedly drawing plenty of attention. With new access from Route 13 on Champions Drive, Kokopelli is just a short distance north of Rent One Park. New Executive Chef Kevin Fleming — a classically trained Marion native — is putting his own personal touches on the Kokopelli menu. Diners can enjoy everything from a

The resta—rant is always open to anyone.” Kokopelli’s is equipped to handle large groups and events – with facilities to accommodate 350 people. The Sunday dinner buffet has made the restaurant a popular place for diners to gather after church, and it’s Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Thanksgiving dinners are showing Southern Illinois that a delicious homecooked holiday meal for two or 22 can be as easy as picking up the phone to make a reservation.

Massac County native Stacie Lynn jumping back into Southern Illinois’ country music scene COUNTRY SCENE Vince Hoffard

tacie Lynn Hines was just 7 years old when she won her first singing competition. Cute and bubbly, the Massac County native went on to star at the Kentucky Opry and spent her childhood performing at festivals throughout the tri-state area. She has dropped out of the music scene for the past five years, concentrating on her education and earning a master’s in business administration degree at Belmont University. She

S

now works for a major insurance company. With paychecks finally coming in and an education to fall back on, if necessary, her pursuit of a music career has resumed, though the passion never left. “I’ve learned a lot through the years, especially with the classes at Belmont that dealt with specific parts of the industry, like publishing, booking and studio work,” the 23-year-old Stacie Lynn said. She has dropped Hines from her name for professional reasons. “I’ve made a lot of contacts, met some really cool people, and now I’m ready to put everything to good use.” Probably the “coolest” person on her list is boyfriend Zack Allen, a sound engineer at a major

studio. Together they cowrote “Let It Rain.” She sings a demo of the tune on reverbnation.com. Stacie Lynn is not a little girl singing anymore. Imagine a blend of Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert, and the content is very adult, as a 15-year-old deals with an unexpected pregnancy. “I’m trying to do all the session work I can. I got to do a project for Disney not too long ago and that got me super pumped. I’m just trying to get my name back out there. I have access to a great band and would love to do some fairs and festivals in Southern Illinois,” she said. As she matured, Lynn’s musical tastes have shifted from a mainstream traditional sound to the

fringe areas occupied by Sunny Sweeney and the Pistol Annies. Lynn says she misses home, but is glad she migrated to Music City.

“I still hope to make music my career,” she says. “I miss all my friends back home, but if I hadn’t moved down here, I would’ve missed a lot. I

love this city. I’m planted here now. I’m not moving.” VINCE HOFFFARD can be

Schmidt (Jonah Hill) was the insecure, nonathletic brainiac who always choked when the chips were down — asking a girl to the prom, for instance. Jenko used to pick on Schmidt. But when they help each other get through the police academy, they become best buds. And they’re naturals for the revival of an old program — putting baby-faced cops back into high school to hunt down the dealers and suppliers of a deadly new drug, HFS. Jenko is set to slide back into the Prom King status he enjoyed just a few years before, with Schmidt doomed to relive his chemistry whiz nobody liked. But the idiots botch their assumed identities. Schmidt is now the alleged jock, Jenko the brains. And high school has changed in the seven years since they graduated. The enviro-

nerd (Dave Franco) is king of the cool kids. Caring about schoolwork is cool, drama club is cool, and picking on a gay kid isn’t. Hill does his usual chubby-white-kidtalking-ghetto smack. But Tatum (“The Vow”), given the chance to cut up and cut loose, dives into this head-first, mocking his good looks and playing the male bimbo thing to the max. Having the hunk hang out with science and sci-fi geeks is funny. Having the lovelorn nerd fall for his drama club “Peter Pan” costar (Brie Larson) isn’t. Like high school itself, “21 Jump Street” hits the wall about halfway in and even prom night can’t save it. It relies on profane tirades from Ice Cube, yet another teen party that gets out of hand and overthe-top violence, and loses track of these two guys living the reverse of their high school days.
