Hangar 9 hosts Texaco Showdown semifinals Contestants in the fourth and final preliminary qualifying round of the Texaco Country Showdown took a step back in time this past weekend, belting out classic traditional country tunes at The Zone Lounge in Whittington. Five performers earned their way into the semifinals, which is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hangar 9 in Carbondale. Leading the pack was Kelsie Knapp of Du Quoin. Dressed in a short white dress and cowboy boots, she electrified the audience with a near-perfect rendition of Martina McBride’s “Broken Wing.” For her effort, Knapp was selected winner of the People’s Choice Award for the evening, which included a $100 check from HerrrinFesta. The local finals of the national talent search will be at 3 p.m. May 29 on the main stage at HerrinFesta. The winner must then advance through three more rounds to make it to the national finals at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Master-of-ceremonies Leann Rimes will present the winner with a check for $100,000. Eric Andrew Larsen of Anna had to overcome flooding and technical difficulties to move on to the next round. Larsen was the only contestant that performed an original song in the competition. His composition was titled, “It’s Hard to Hang on to Her (When She’s Holding on to Him).” The tune accentuated his unique vocals, although he had trouble getting his voice properly amplified because the microphone was blocked by the harmonica support hanging from his neck. Others advancing on Friday were: Jeannie Suedmeyer of Ewing, singing Miranda Lambert’s “White Liar;” James Craddock of Macedonia, covering “The Ride” by David Allan Coe; and Kevin Tucker of Ewing, performing a stunning version of Jack Greene’s “Statue Of A Fool.” — Vince Hoffard

The festival begins a day earlier, Friday, May 20, with hometown heroes Adam and the H-Bombs, a rock and blues trio featuring Paducahans Adam Horbovetz, Keith Culp, and Erik Eicholtz; Lew Jetton and 61 South; and headliner

All four of TNA’s divisions — heavyweight, tag team, X (high-flyers) and knockouts (women) — will be showcased during the event. The depth of the TNA roster will also be on display, as veterans like Angle and Jarrett share the stage with more homegrown and up-and-coming talent. This diversity represents a critical factor of the company’s success, Jarrett said. “I’ve been wrestling actively for 25 years now, and from the time I got in, before I got in, there’s always been that ebb and flow,” he said. “I’ve never seen a wrestling company that didn’t have a mix.” Tickets for the show are available now at the Rent One Park box office. Tickets range from $20 to $50 and can be purchased online at southernillinoisminers.com or by calling 618-998-8499. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, with a special meet-and-greet for VIP ticket holders, and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

show up,” Richards said with a rasp of a laugh. The legendary guitar player was given a surprising amount of spotlight during the sixhour premiere, which was really more of a popculture pep rally, with more than 700 fans paying $1,000 each to join invited guests and watch the 3-D film on a six-story outdoor screen, eat dinner and see the stars up close. With a big pirate grin, Richards went through it all, shrugging, bowing and staggering, the same bleary ballet that famously inspired much of Depp’s on-screen shtick as Sparrow when he was first putting his now-signature
character together for the 2003 film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” In this new movie, Richards is on screen maybe two minutes, but it’s enough time to kill a man, pass on some key knowledge to his offspring and deliver a line that gets one of the biggest laughs in the movie. “Well, basically, I tell Johnny what to do at one point, and then I get out of there,” Richards said. He had just arrived at the theme park in a black SUV and was waiting in a green room where two makeup artists stood by to touch up the Disney Channel starlets and MTV faces who showed up for
the all-hands-on-deck media event. It was a world apart from a Stones stadium show, but there was one thing Richards recognized. “You can hear ‘em screaming already,” he said, nodding toward the wall and the thousands of fans beyond who lined the park’s sidewalks and already had waited hours for a glimpse of the celebrity parade to the premiere. “This is so different than what I usually do, and I love to see how it’s made,
you know,” he said. “And I don’t have to really do a lot of work. We did it in London at Pinewood Studios, and it was the usual thing. You get there early, and you wait around a long time. The makeup takes a long time; it’s an incredible amount of makeup, and sometimes you’re sitting there next to a guy who’s getting scales put on. ... It’s a lot of preparation to do something that will be short, but it’s amazing stuff, as you expect.”
