‘Fire and Ice’ features Antarctic photography, steel sculptures COBDEN — Photographer William Schwartz of Murphysboro and sculptor Jeff Engbring of Cobden are the featured artists of “Fire and Ice,” a new exhibit at anthill gallery & vintage curiosities. Schwartz has traveled and photographed sites around the world and is displaying for the first time his images of Antarctica. His shots show the landscape of the frigid, frail end of the
world. His larger works will be exhibited at Yellow Moon Café, as well as the gallery. Engbring uses fire to forge steel into designs reflecting the natural world. His work, which also includes wood sculptures, pays homage to the beauty of nature and its creatures, from small birds to larger animals like horses. The exhibit runs through September. — Adam Testa

Presentation focuses on the history of southernmost Illinois COBDEN — Those individuals with a penchant for local history are invited to a special presentation this weekend exploring the past of part of southernmost Illinois. Ed Annable, president of the Johnson County Genealogy and Historical Society, will talk about the history of the formation of Johnson County in 1812 at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12. While Johnson county today is limited in size, at its founding it covered a much larger area.
The portion of the region encompassing modern-day Jackson, Alexander, Union, Williamson, Pulaski, Pope and Massac counties was originally part of Johnson County before each split into its own governing body. Annable’s talk will be hosted at the Union County Museum in downtown Cobden and is sponsored by the Union County Historical and Genealogy Society. — Adam Testa

There’s little that’s new in ‘Bourne’-again action revival The Bourne Legacy **

Edward Norton; directed by But if you’re bringing back Tony Gilroy; opening Friday at Treadstone, introducing a ShowPlace 8 in Carbondale new spy and new and AMC Centre 8 in Marion government overlords searching for him, you BY ROGER MOORE darned sure better grab us, MCCLATCHY-TRIBUNE NEWS straight out of the box. Tony Gilroy burns through You don’t need Matt 30 minutes of “The Bourne Damon to revive the Bourne Legacy without much film franchise. And you happening. He takes a good, probably don’t need Paul solid hour before getting this Greengrass, the quicksequel-reboot on its feet. cutting action auteur who And an hour of actors directed the best of the sputtering dense spy agency
jargon in a dimly lit “sit rep room full of computers, phones and TV monitors is more than a test of patience. It’s a test of whether this franchise deserves to go on. Events here are concurrent with the tail end of the “The Bourne Ultimatum. Things have gone “sideways, and the spy lords need to tidy up. The one agent they’re having trouble tricking into taking one last pill — the one that’ll kill him — is Aaron Cross. Cross uses all his skills to make his way back to the lab where he was altered, to get help from the doctor who
helped create him. Renner is a more credible action hero than Damon, but Cross is not a compelling character until he finds the doctor. Their scenes together are what bring “Bourne to life. Gilroy saves his big action beats for the latter acts and his great chase for the finale. He and his co-writer brother Dan revisit not just earlier Bourne characters, but earlier Bourne plot contrivances. The Gilroys don’t kill or wreck “The Bourne Legacy. But this Treadstone retread just treads water.
