Make your way to Murphysboro Apple Festival returns to Jackson County town BY ADAM TESTA THE SOUTHERN
n 61 years, Lois Murphy hasn’t missed a single Apple Festival. The Murphysboro native, best known for her role in restoring and operating the historic downtown Liberty Theater, has seen festivals come and go, but when early September rolls around each year, she finds herself excited for what lies ahead. The Apple Festival has become a mainstay in Murphysboro, a celebration of the town’s heritage and successes and a homecoming for residents who have moved away. For that one week a year, the city’s spirit is on display for Southern Illinois. “It’s just a good celebration here for our town,” Murphy said. To appreciate the present, sometimes one has to look to the past. And this year’s festival will give residents and guests alike a chance to do just that. The Liberty Theater will be showing historic films “Murphysboro 1926” and “Murphysboro 1938” at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 16-17. The films show what life was like in Murphysboro for the previous generation through photographs and restored video reels. “They’re very good,” Murphy said, noting people continue to ask for the films to be shown. “It sure gives you a perspective on what it used to be and what it is now.”

The screenings, made possible by the Jackson County Historical Society, will cost a donation to the ongoing renovation efforts at the Liberty, which was really added to the National Register of Historic Places. Apple Festival guests can step even farther back in time with a visit to the Murphysboro Event Center, where the General John A. Logan Museum will host an exhibit called “Caught in the Sweep of History: Murphysboro in the Civil War 1861-1865.” Through a series of informative panels and displays, the exhibit tells the story of how the War Between the States affected the Southern Illinois town. SIU theater department announces 2012-13 season Free canoe trips offered during Cache River Days CARBONDALE — Are you ready to feel the passion? That’s the question poised by the SIU Carbondale Department of Theater as it prepares for the 2012-13 performance series. “Passion elevates our sense of life and makes the ordinary epic,” the season description reads. “It makes us see things in a new way. It makes us strive to surpass boundaries.” The four-show subscription series begins Oct. 18-12 with the
acclaimed rock musical “Rent.” Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème,” which was presented during this summer’s Southern Illinois Music Festival, the Tony Award-winning play tells the story of young artists struggling to achieve their dreams in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and under the shadow of the HIV epidemic. In time for the holidays, the theater department presents “fun for all and all for fun” in a humorous and action-packed rendition of
the classic “The Three Musketeers.” The show, based loosely on the Alexandre Dumas novel, runs Nov. 29-Dec. 2 and tells of a young man who leaves his home to become a musketeer — except he must take his kid sister with him. The spring semester’s portion of the series opens with “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,” running Feb. 21-24. This show blends theater, music, poetry and dance to tell the tale of seven

African American women examining the struggles and challenges of their daily lives. The series concludes with the romantic drama “Reasons to be Pretty” by Neil LaBute from April 2528. The play tackles America’s obsession with physical appearance with a no-holds-barred approach. Tickets for the fourshow series are $56 for adults and $24 for students and are available now. Individual tickets for the productions are $16 for adults and $6 for students and will be available beginning Sept. 4. They can be purchased at southernticketsonline.com In addition to the subscription series, the theater department will also present three special productions. “The Three Seasons of Cora” by Erin Zimmerman makes its world premiere from Nov. 1-4. The new play tells the story of a young woman in 19th century West Virginia who is “claimed, tamed and ultimately changed” by the societal forces of the day. The comic opera “Cosi Fan Tutte” with music by Mozart and libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte tells of two men who set out to prove their lovers are faithful by courting them in disguise. The opera, which runs on Feb. 8 and 10, is performed in English with accompaniment by the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra. Finally, on March 28-31, the department presents the “Playwrights’ Festival,” a collection of new works from SIU writers. Works range from silly to serious and satirical to sensationalistic.

But time couldn’t keep them apart forever, and in 2010, Heart returned to the Billboard charts with the release of “Red Velvet Car” and a Top 5 DVD, “Night at Sky Church.” In the wake of the success of “Red Velvet Car,” the sisters decided the time was right to follow up on a frequent request: to write a book. But they didn’t want to go the route of a tabloidesque gossip collection. “We’ve had moments of failure and vulnerability and humiliation, sure, but ours is also the story of women who are being told there are rules to follow and just won’t do it,” Ann Wilson said in the band’s statement. The Wilsons collaborated with Seattle rock expert Charles R. Cross, who also wrote biographies of Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix, for their project. The result is a in-depth look at the moments that have defined the sisters as women and as performers. “There’s really no point in going through all of this if you’re going to write a white wash,” Ann said. “We really hung ourselves out there.” Through the years, the Wilsons have never lost their original mindset and attitude. They honor the past while celebrating the glory of the future, and that mentality is reflected in the defiant emotion that

s teenagers learning to play guitar, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard both dreamed of conquering the country music world. While their friends wanted to be the next Brett Favre or Michael Jordan, they fantasized of becoming a dominate industry force like George Strait or Garth Brooks. The plan of individual stardom began to slowly disappear when they attended prestigious Belmont University in Nashville a few years ago. After being introduced by a mutual friend, they started hanging out and writing songs together.

Adopting the name Florida Georgia Line, the duo was soon playing clubs in Music City and developed a large fan base with an infectious, highenergy stage presentation. “We met over at Belmont a couple years ago and started writing songs together,” Kelly said during a recent telephone interview. “It wasn’t a planned thing. We were playing these tiny clubs and hotel lounges and started tearin’ up the room. Good things started to happen pretty quickly.” Less than two months ago, Florida Georgia Line signed with the Republic Nashville branch of the Big Machine Label Group, home of Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts, and suddenly current single “Cruise” started soaring up the Billboard singles chart. “We knew we had

something special when we wrote it but had no idea it would create such a buzz and spread like wildfire,” Kelley said. “We have to pinch ourselves daily because it has been a very crazy last couple of months. We’re enjoying every minute of it.” Several months ago, the band was booked to play the Copper Dragon in Carbondale on Sept. 14. The show sold out earlier this week. Kelley said the best part of his day is when the band is performing. “There’s not a better feeling in the world than to be able to share the stage each night with your best friend,” he said. “This takes a lot of energy and hard work. We are dedicated to putting on a great show for the fans every night.” Despite the seemingly unlimited supply of energy

possessed by the duo, they were completely zapped of strength on a recent marathon day of shooting the video to accompany the “Cruise” single. “It was tiring but a lot of fun,” Hubbard said. “It was an important day because we got to use a lot of our family and friends on the project. There were people there we hadn’t seen in a while and it was fun sharing a little bit of what we do with them. It was an unforgettable day.” The video is in very heavy rotation on the CMT and GAC cable channels. It was filmed in one grueling day at a farm on the outskirts of Nashville and prominently features several bikiniclad females, an impromptu game of strip poker and a jacked-up Chevy truck with a towering lift kit. Selecting the name Florida Georgia Line was a no brainer for this duo, since Hubbard comes from Monroe, Ga., and Kelley hails from Ormond Beach, Fla.
With one member rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs and the other supporting the Florida State Seminoles, it was thrilling for the band to tour major college towns in the South to jumpstart their career, a route previous followed by their major musical influences Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert and the LoCash Cowboys. In December, the duo released a five-song EP titled “It’z Just What We Do,” which includes the “Cruise” hit, currently the No. 6 most downloaded country single on iTunes. The EP is available at all digital retailers. “We are in and out of the studio right now working on our next project,” Hubbard said. Not traditional country singers, both artists said their ultimate duet partner would be rapper Lil’ Wayne. The popularity of the band spiked this summer when it was invited to be part of the Country Throwdown Tour, which
featured major acts Gary Allen, Justin Moore and Rodney Atkins. It made a stop at Rent One Park in Marion on June 29. This summer, Florida Georgia Line also made its duet on the Grand Ole Opry and signed on as the opening act for Jake Owen’s “CMT On Tour” concert series, which begins Oct. 10 in New York City. Although tickets are sold out for the Sept. 14 concert in Carbondale, Florida Georgia Line will be appearing with Craig Morgan, Colt Ford and others on Sept. 22 at the Rowdy Ridge Music Fest in Sturgis, Ky., which is just over the bridge from Shawneetown. The two-day event also features David Lee Murphy, Darryl Worley, Bo Brice and others on Sept. 21. For more information, call 270-333-9316. Carbondale Rocks puts focus on local music CARBONDALE — The local music scene takes center stage this weekend, as various venues in downtown Carbondale come together for the Carbondale Rocks Revival. The three-day festival will feature more than 60 bands performing at nearly 15 venues. A number of different genres will be highlighted throughout the event. Rusted Root will launch the weekend with a concert tonight, Sept. 6, at Rustle Hill Winery in Cobden, the only participating venue outside of Carbondale. The nationally renowned band in known for it its combination of acoustic rock with worldly influences. Doors for that show open at 5 p.m. today, Sept. 6. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. The Kevin Lucas Orchestra will open. The idea for the festival was born last year when a group of local music promoters wanted to showcase the best of what Southern Illinois had
to offer. Last year’s event was planned on short notice, and organizers promise this year’s affair will be bigger and better than before. If the Revival continues to be successful, organizers hope to see it become an annual event. There have been several such traditions in Carbondale that have come and gone through the years, and they hope this can become a new regular replacement. lousy storyteller. Cooper, earnest as ever, nicely underplays Rory’s frustrations but does little to suggest a guy supposedly wracked with guilt over the limo lifestyle he’s stolen. As the Old Man, Jeremy Irons is the best natural storyteller in the cast, lending warmth to very generic narration of postWorld War II romance, tragedy and the fervor in which he created the novel that makes Rory famous. Ben Barnes and Nora Arnezeder play the young couple in the Old Man’s flashback within a flashback. Irons has the disarming twinkle of old age, but he can still turn on the steely glint of accusation and menace. No wonder Cooper looks in awe and ill at ease in their scenes together — the best scenes in the movie. If you were setting out to write the perfect fall film, you’d include much that’s in “The Words” — romance, romantic settings (New York and Paris), mystery, literary intrigue and longing. But for that “perfect” film, you’d have to heighten the emotions, make more of the characters and the relationships, find other ways for “temptation” and “retribution” to show themselves. And you’d probably trim a lot of words out of it, especially if the novels within the novel are as weak as the lines the screenwriters have Quaid narrate, the situations Cooper must act out and the script that only the old pro Irons can give the spark of life.

It’s time for movies to lure adults into the theater again: Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee, Ben Affleck, Sam Mendes and Andrew Dominik all have new films to share.
