THE SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2010
The holidays traditionally are a time for warmth, giving and sharing the joys of home and family. For some, though, the Martha Stewart image of a warm fire, a laden table and plentiful gifts is far from reality.
’Tis the season to give to others Loss of jobs, home foreclosures and reduced funding for social services have left many families in need. Fortunately, many Southern Illinois agencies and charities are working to provide food, clothing, emergency shelter, gifts for children — even diapers for babies and shelters for animals. Their generosity helps our neighbors through the tough times. Today, Thanksgiving Day, The Southern Illinoisan is continuing its tradition of publishing a list of charities that provide a helping hand — some just at Christmas
and others year-round. We hope those reading the list find some places where their gifts or their volunteer efforts can provide a happier holiday for those in need. Some of the efforts are regional; others are listed by the specific counties and cities they serve. The list begins on Page 4E. Please take a few minutes from your busy day to find one small way to help. One small way can be a big difference for one or many. Please see what you can do to help. — List lovingly compiled by Southern reporter Linda Rush

a children’s shoe drive. The two organizations are challenging all the nonprofit organizations, civic organizations, fraternal organizations and churches to help provide shoes for low-income children in the county. To help provide shoes for the children, contact Rhonda McCowen at 618242-8000. Toys for Kids of Jefferson County last year provided toys and stocking stuffers for nearly 900 children in the county. Numerous organizations and civic clubs contribute toward the effort. The group is seeking toys for children from newborns to age 14. It does not accept or give out toys that promote violence or have weapons. Children with a Medicaid card are eligible for the program. Registration of children will continue from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Toys will be given out on Dec. 3. Those who register will be given a pickup time. Donations will be accepted at Toys for Kids headquarters at Times Square Mall, or at the mall office. Donations to Toys for Kids of Jefferson County also can be sent in care of Curves, 301 N. 27th St., Mount Vernon, IL 62864.
“Nobody knows but the teacher and the family,” Alongi said. The program was coordinated by teacher Sue Logan for 11 years and now is directed by Jane Weinberg. As needs increased, teacher Logan went to some sororities, civic clubs and churches to seek additional funding. Now, as the need continues to grow, the public is asked to help as well. Donations can be sent to Clothes for Kids, P.O. Box 344, Du Quoin, IL 62832. Alongi says “nobody gets paid” for their work; 100 percent of the donations are used to buy clothing and shoes for the children. Toys for Kids Christmas project, sponsored by the Du Quoin Jaycees, is in its 33rd year of providing new and good used toys for children in need. Families needing help
