How to Choose a Storage Building Picking a storage building may seem straightforward, but the sheer number of choices available can make it tough to make a smart decision. In fact, if you haven't visited a storage building retailer lately, you may be surprised at all the options available. From the materials and construction to appearance and size, there is a wide range of choices that can suit any budget — but you want to make sure it's a building that can meet your needs for the long term. CONSTRUCTION The first thing you'll want to consider is how the building is constructed. Unlike regular houses — which are usually covered by standardized building codes to ensure consistent quality — storage buildings can vary widely in how they're put together. The very best storage buildings are built just as strong, if not stronger, than the home you live in. You'll want to look closely at the
roof to know what kind of shingles, decking and trusses are used because any corners that are cut here could lead to water damage over time. You should also look at the doors and walls to see how they're constructed and how sturdy they feel, including what type of hardware comes with the door. For the flooring, make sure your storage building has thick decking and a joist system designed to eliminate sagging and stay together. Most people put heavy equipment like lawnmowers in their storage sheds, so it's critical to use a well-built floor if your building is going to last. DESIGN Next, you'll want to look at how the building is designed, both from an appearance and usability standpoint. How much you enjoy your storage building will largely be dictated by how well it's laid out. If you
plan to use it as a garden shed, you'll probably want windows to let in sunlight, for example. If you plan to use it to store a car, then a garage door option is a must. The door location, floorplan and overall space can differ greatly from building to building, so you should also think about your site plan when picking the design. A long, narrow shed will look and feel very different from a short, wide one, so think about what you plan to store in the building and which layout would work best for your needs. Finally, the biggest surprise for many buyers is all the choices for the exterior style. From shutters and
windows to trim and roof color, you'll find lots of different options that can make your storage building look like a cute cottage, a rugged cabin or a classic American barn. THE RETAILER Finally, where you purchase your storage building can make a big difference in the overall experience. Some dealers offer a leaseto-own program, which can be a great way to pay for your building over time. Instead of paying a monthly fee for off-site storage, you can spend a comparable amount of money to lease a storage building on your own premises. A portion of each monthly
payment is applied toward the purchase price if you decide to buy. You will also want to find out about delivery and assembly. Some companies prefer to assemble the building on your property, but you'll get more consistent quality from a company that builds its structures in a quality-controlled environment off-site. Otherwise, the quality of your building could depend on which crew happens to be working and available that day. If you get all these things right — the quality, design and sales process — you're sure to get a building that will meet your needs for many years to come.

It is important for you to take meticulous care of your eyesight. It is extremely easy to forget about your annual eye exam, especially if you believe you are seeing well. Often, vision changes happen so gradually and are not realized until you are in the exam room. Many people do not believe that annual eye exams are a necessity, however, eye exams are just as important as your annual visit to your primary care doctor or dentist. Many serious vision problems are not realized until the condition becoes too advanced and has severely effected your eyes. Diseases such as macular degeneration, detached retinas, diabetic retinopathy and contact lens complications are just a few. Glaucoma is often known as the “sneak thief” of vision because there are no visible warning signs. When left untreated many diseases can often lead to blindness. Early detection is the key to preventing vision loss in these cases. For children, clear vision can lead to a better quality of life both in and out
How to Choose an Eye Doctor of school. Many visual disorders go unnoticed without proper eye examinations. Near sightedness, far sightedness, eye movement disorders and reading problems can all be diagnosed and treated with proper eye examinations. Athletes, both young and old also benefit from proper visual correction and eye movement. These are a few of the reasons regular visits to the eye doctor are so important. They can improve your quality of life through better vision and potentially diagnose and treat harmful or vision threatening disorders. It is of the utmost importance to select a knowledgeable doctor to assist you with the health of your eyes. The term ‘eye doctor’ can refer to either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. For your yearly check you will most likely visit with an optometrist. Optometrists can assess your need for corrective lenses, either spectacles or contacts lenses, as well as check your eyes for any signs of disease. A common misconception is that optometrists cannot treat
disease, however, most optometrists are trained and highly qualified to treat eye diseases that do not require surgery but can be treated with drops or oral medication. Optometrists can treat and monitor diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, eye infections and injuries. Optometrists obtain a bachelor’s degree before completing four years of post-graduate optometry school. Before they can obtain their degree they must complete a series of board exams and external rotations. Ophthalmolo-
gists are more specialized, completing medical school before going on to their eye residencies for disease and surgery. In most cases you will be referred to an ophthalmologist from an optometrist if your condition requires surgical intervention or more invasive treatment options. Choosing any doctor can be a difficult decision, even more so when it deals with your eyes. A doctor should be chosen who can best treat all of your needs whether you are just looking for glasses or have a red eye. Look for someone who is willing to
listen and spend the time needed to explain and address any problem you may be having. Asking friends and family may be beneficial as they will give you an honest opinion of the office and doctor. Do not be afraid to call the office and ask about any certain doctor. If you are in need of glasses, then an office should be chosen that carries quality products. Internet searches can be beneficial but can also be misleading in their content. Once you are in the office or exam room do not hesitate to ask questions about any testing that is being done; never leave the office without understanding your diagnosis. The best doctors will give a thorough explanation of why they are giving you a treatment regimen. If not, ask for one. Your eyes should be very important to you. Most importantly, choose a doctor whom you feel comfortable with and whom you can grow to trust. You and your eyes’ well-being should be of the utmost importance to the doctor and staff at the office.

How to Choose a Doctor “One of the most important things you can do to safeguard your health is to choose the right physician, someone you can trust to meet your health care needs” says Patsy Jensen, Executive Director of Shawnee Health Service. There are some important factors to consider when you’re in the process of selecting your physician. Often the personal physician you choose will be mandated by the type of health insurance you carry. Frequently your insurance company will contract with individual physicians or physician groups and you will be required to choose your personal doctor from within the insurance company’s primary care physician (PCP) network. In these insurance programs, your primary care physician is responsible for all your medical needs, and should you need the attention of a specialist, your primary care physician is responsible for making that referral. The doctors in PCP networks will have agreed beforehand to certain requirements and your insurance may not cover you if you choose a doctor who is outside this PCP network or if you see a specialist without a referral from your PCP. Some types of medical insurance, however, put no
restrictions on the doctors you can see. If that’s the case with your medical insurance, a quick review of ads in your local newspaper or phone book will yield many qualified candidates. The local hospital mayalso have a “Find a Physician” service. Most people will want to choose a generalist as their primary care physician, either a family practice or an internal medicine physician. Mid-level practitioners such as physician assistants or nurse practitioners work under the supervision of a physician and are often good choices for primary care. The best way to find a new practitioner is probably through a referral from friends, family or someone else whose judgment in this matter you can trust. Ms. Jensen of-
fers that “people who like and trust their own physicians are usually eager to share their experiences”. In some cases, you may want to choose a physician who specializes in a certain area of medical practice. A woman may feel most comfortable with an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/ GYN.) A parent may want to choose a family physician or pediatrician for their children. An adult with a chronic condition may want to choose an internal medicine physician or other specialist. Adults over age 55 may want to choose a geriatric specialist. Whoever your choice turns out to be, it is advisable to call the physician’s office to find out if that physician is taking new patients and if the physi-
cian accepts the type of insurance that you have. You may then confirm with your insurance company that your visits to this doctor will be covered. There are other factors to consider when choosing a physician. Much of this information may be available in a print brochure or on the practice’s web site. You should know if your physician is Board Certified. This means that he or she has passed a rigorous examination in his or her chosen field and maintains a schedule of continuing medical education. You’ll want to know that the physician’s office is convenient to either your home or your workplace and has office hours that work for you. You’ll want to make sure the physician you’ve chosen has admitting privileges at a hospital where you’d feel comfortable should you have to become a patient there. In addition, you may want to know if your physician is able to perform diagnostic tests and procedures in his or her own office or if you will have to visit a separate facility when you need these services. You should find out how your physician’s office manages appointments and urgent care needs. At times, there may be a long wait for an appointment.
Many physicians offer same-day appointments to established patients when the person has an urgent problem. Your physician may also offer the services of a nurse with whom you can talk on the phone about your situation and help guide you to a decision about whether or not you need an appointment. Some physician offices provide a phone call reminder about your appointment and some may charge a fee for a missed appointment. Does your physician offer evening or weekend appointments? Finally, you should inquire about the physician’s payment policies and procedures. Does the physician’s office bill the insurance company for you? Are you expected to pay up front and wait for the insurance payment? Does the office accept payment by cash, check, debit or credit card? The answers to these questions may be highly important to you if you must pay out of pocket for services or for insurance deductibles or co-pays. Finding the right physician for yourself or a family member is very important and worth spending some time and effort to make a choice that works for you.

How to Choose an Orthodontist Have you ever noticed that people with crooked teeth usually smile less than those with a perfect smile? The reason is simple: having crooked or imperfect teeth can make one very self-conscious, causing them problems which may last their entire lives. Imperfect teeth can cause people to become shy and have low self-esteem. This can hinder their lives in school, the workplace and even future relationships. Whither you are looking for braces for yourself or your child, it is important that you find an orthodontist who will be able to provide you with the best teeth and smile that you can have. During an evaluation, an orthodontist can look over your teeth and tell you what treatments will be necessary to give you the smile you always wanted. A good orthodontist will be able to explain how the treatment — be it braces, aligners or other appliances --will work to straighten your teeth while giving you assurance that it will not be a bad experience. Different orthodontists have different amounts of
training. Before you put your teeth into the hands of anyone, make sure that they have the credentials to back their business up. You can find out information about an orthodontist’s training by asking to see their diplomas, which are usually displayed on the wall, and reading reviews about them online. To have specialized training in the field of orthodontics, you need to have an additional two to three years of specific study. This is required to become a licensed orthodontist. “It’s also very important for the orthodontist to keep up with the newest trends in technology. I usually spend about four weeks a year attending continuing education courses”, says Dr. Kyle Childers. Find an orthodontist which is up-to-date on all the newest technology. In other words, if you know more about a new procedure than the orthodontist you are visiting then it’s not a good idea to do business with him. Although the old-time orthodontist may seem fine at first, it’s important to have an orthodontist who knows about the newest procedures that
could be of benefit to you. Some of the newer treatments, like Invisalign, only require you to wear aligners instead of braces. This is more esthetically pleasing. If you are interested in a mouthpiece rather than braces, discuss this with your new orthodontist. Do not attempt to procure a mouthpiece through a catalogue or over the Internet; it is important to have special equipment that is made for your mouth. An orthodontist’s office should be comfortable, making you feel at home and as if you have support while visiting or receiving treatment. Do not settle
for an orthodontist whose office makes you feel frightened or uptight. “We always welcome parents back into our clinic area”, says Childers. “Our team enjoys getting to know our patient families. We want our patients to experience some memorable and fun times throughout their treatment process”. Not only is it important that you like the orthodontist, but that you get along well with the dental assistants. The assistants will play a huge role in your treatment, so notice if they seem to take their work seriously and if they appear to know what they are doing. “All of our assistants have been accredited by
the Academy of Orthodontic Assisting and are required to complete yearly continuing education as well”, Childers added. Look over the orthodontist’s equipment. If it looks unclean or old, then a red flag should go up in your mind. Before-and-after pictures on the walls of an orthodontist’s office are a good sign. These pictures prove that other people have been treated by the orthodontist and achieved good results. You can learn a lot about orthodontists from wordof-mouth. Talk to your neighbors, friends, coworkers and associates to find out their opinions about orthodontists. These people will be able to give you the clear, unbiased views which you can’t find anywhere else. Choosing an orthodontist is an important part of your life. You don’t want to give your teeth over to just anyone. By taking the time to check out several prospective orthodontists, you can choose the perfect one for your situation.

How To Choose A Modular Home Builder Building a new home can be a daunting task. A number of issues can come up during the process, which is why choosing the right builder is essential to having a finished home that you can truly appreciate with a minimum of unexpected expenses and construction headaches along the way. Final pricing for modular homes average lower than traditional sitebuilt homes, but obviously depend on structure size and the scope of custom features. There are many key factors in choosing the right builder. Start by asking friends and neighbors for recommendations. When it comes to construction, word-of-mouth is a great way to find out information. When asking someone about the experience they had with a building project it is important to be specific. For 33 years, Contempri Homes in Pinckneyville has been manufacturing modular homes “the smarter way,” according to
President John Perry. Things to ask about include if they started on time, had any delays (other than weather), kept costs within budget and finished when they were supposed to finish. It is also important to ask if the crews were professional and cleaned up once the project was completed. Once all custom materials are delivered to Contempri, construction begins in the factory’s controlled environment. Framing, rough wiring, plumbing, drywalling and insulating can all be streamline manufactured within one week. Working from a controlled environment means no weather delays. Ask if repairs had to be made after the project was done. Some minor issues are expected, but if there are repairs or minor touchups that had to be done, ask if they were handled quickly. You want to make sure they have good follow-up service. This is a question you want to ask
Page 10 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
to past customers, who are likely to be more honest about it. It's a good idea to drive by homes the builder has worked on in the past. You might want to do so on the weekend, that way you can talk to the home owners and ask questions. Take a notebook with you with questions you want to ask and write down their answers. It will be easier to review your notes later and make a final decision. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even questions that seem insignificant can yield important answers. Ask the builder you are considering for references. When you contact the references ask the same questions. It is also a good idea contact your local Better Business Bureau and Home Builder's Association. Once you have compiled a list of three of four possible builders, set up meetings with them. It is recommended to meet at the site of the building to give them an
idea of what is required and to bring blueprints. Ask each builder to bring photos of work they have done. Prepare a list of questions. Ask how much of the work is done by their own crews and how much, if any, is subcontracted. Ask ahead of time how far they will go with the project and who will do the excavating, siding, roofing, insulation, cooling and heating, etc. Contempri offers two energy saving construction options. The first is the bio-closed cell, soybean based spray foam insulation and they also offer a geothermal heating and cooling system option. Some builders will subcontract out the work for the entire project, which means dealing with many other companies. If they do this, ask which companies they work with. Ask about the quality of materials used and for an estimate of the total cost involved. Ask if the builder will oversee the work on a daily basis or if they have
a project manager who will do this. This applies even if the work is subcontracted. You want to make sure that any possible problem is noticed and addressed quickly. If a problem is left undetected until the project is complete it could be very costly to correct it. It is generally much easier to catch a problem early on and correct it while the initial building process is still going on. Make sure the builder is open to questions and is good with communication. While choosing the right builder may take some time, in the end the efforts of being selective will result in satisfaction with the finished project. Perry asks his potential customers to consider the amount of time they save by using Contempri, as well as the excitement that accompanies moving into a fully customized dream home.

How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets One of the best ways to improve the value, beauty and function of your kitchen is to install new cabinets. Because the layout of your cabinets sets the overall shape and design of your kitchen — not to mention takes up lots of visual space in your home — it's critical that you pick the right ones that match your lifestyle and your sense of design, as well as your supplier. CUSTOM OR NOT? At the outset of your kitchen makeover, you need to make a big decision. Do you want custom cabinets, or can you settle for off-the-shelf units? The answer will depend in large part on your budget. Custom cabinets have a lot more options than the pre-built units you would pick up at your local home improvement store. Not only are custom cabinets completely unique to match your fashion sense, letting you choose the right materials and layout to turn your dream kitchen into reality, but
they're also typically built stronger than off-the-shelf boxed cabinets for big box stores. For budget-minded renovations, pre-built cabinets may be the only option, but keep in mind your choice of materials and layout may be limited, and they are often built with cheaper, lightweight particle board rather than solid hardwoods. That means they may not last as long or perform as well. Companies, like your local lumber yards, let you order cabinets from the factory to suit your exact measurements and materials. They offer cost savings like the pre-made cabinets stocked at retail stores, but they also offer more choices of materials, design, color and style. GET A DESIGN PRO Because a kitchen renovation isn't cheap — and will impact the look and value of your home for many years to come — it's a good idea to get a professional designer to help you make plans for your new cabinets.
While you may have an idea of what you want already, a great designer will take your ideas to a whole new level. The best ones actually save you money by helping you add equity to your home by creating a beautiful look that will withstand the test of time and are designed to suit your needs. See if your cabinet provider offers design services as part of their installation package. Many companies have software that will let you visualize your new kitchen cabinets on a computer screen, and some have their own in-house designer that specializes in cabinetry. INSTALLATION Even if you pick the highest-quality cabinets and have a brilliant design plan in place, none of that matters if the installation is not done properly. That's why you need to make finding a high quality, reputable installer your top priority. The best kitchen cabinet companies have been in business a long time and
have plenty of references in your area. If they're good at what they do, they'll be proud to show off their work and help you get in touch with their previous customers. One place to start is asking your friends and neighbors who they used for their kitchen renovation project and how happy they were with the result. You can also check the Better Business Bureau for feedback on local cabinet installers and ask your local Realtors who they recommend. Some other things to consider when picking the company to install your cabinets: — Make sure they're insured. Ask to see their insurance paperwork, and call to be sure their policy is still in effect. You could be held liable for any injuries on your property if the installers don't carry insurance. — Get everything in writing. You should know how much the project will cost, along with precisely what is included and what is not when you get a price quote.
— Ask about change orders. If you decide on different drawer pulls at the last minute, for example, will the contractor charge an extra fee? — Make sure you and the installer are in complete agreement on the timeline. A kitchen renovation can take days, weeks or months depending on the complexity, and you need to make plans for how you will prepare meals when the kitchen is out of service. Check references to see how closely the contractor stuck to their estimated schedule on previous jobs. If you do your homework, setting a realistic budget and finding a cabinet installation company with a long track record of quality work, you'll get great results in the end. The new cabinets will add value and style to your home that will make it a more enjoyable, comfortable place to spend time for many years to come.

Here is a recent letter we received from a Dental Implant patient: My name is Jean O. I had been searching for a dentist who performed dental implants. There was an article in the Carbondale newspaper talking about Dr. Hughes. I carried the article in my purse for a while. Soon I asked a friend if she knew of a dentist who did implants and was good, but also considerate of my fears and needs. She recommended Dr. Hughes. I felt good when I realized he was the doctor I had read about and saved the newspaper article on. Immediately I called and made an appointment. I was met in the office by a delightful staff that made me feel at ease. They showed interest and had a calming effect. Meeting Dr. Hughes immediately made me know I had selected the right doctor to perform my implant. My discomfort and concern about the procedure were quickly addressed. In no time I was ready to be calm and at ease. Dr. Hughes described each procedure as he continued to work. He constantly checked to make sure that nothing was hurting or in any way was I uncomfortable. After the implant, I had no problems. Dr. Hughes even called my home to see how I was doing. It is my opinion that I found a wonderful dentist who has a genuine love for his work. His passion for his work is so obvious. I am indebted to my friend who suggested Dr. Hughes. I have already shared my wonderful experience with other family members and friends. I have always had a fear of dentists. I am thankful that Dr. Hughes has eased my fears and has given me the smile that I always wanted. He has given me more confidence in smiling. Dr. Hughes offers a wide range of procedures that correct all problems and gives his patients a new sense of self-confidence. He uses the latest techniques to shorten his patients down time considerably. He does everything to enhance his patients smile. If you are looking for the right dentist to help you acquire an attractive smile and improve the quality of your life, you should call Dr. Hughes.

How to Know If Dental Implants Are Right For You Dental implants are cutting edge technology and are the state of the art way to replace missing teeth. They are the best way to regain a smile that is beautiful as well as functional and natural. Many people suffer from missing teeth. This can occur for a number of reasons such as gum disease, tooth decay and trauma. If a person is missing all their teeth, they will then have to wear dentures. In many cases the lower denture will not fit well. Dental implants can be used to secure a lower denture and return it to good function. Other advantages to dental implants include the fact they are anchored in bone and cannot decay due to their titanium makeup. If cared for properly, the implant can last the patient’s lifetime.
The stigma of missing teeth adversely affects a person’s self image and confidence. Frequently, people become self conscious or embarrassed because of their dental problems. “We have patients come to our practice all the time who desire to improve their self esteem by gaining a great smile”, says Dr. Christopher Hughes, of Hughes Dental Arts Center in Herrin. Losing permanent teeth can be devastating, particularly in a person who neglects to correct the problem. Dental implants are a wonderful way to get back your life. A person can chew the foods of their choice with comfort and confidence. This contrasts with those who wear full or partial dentures, and who have problems eating because of the insta-
bility of the denture or partial. “Being able to enjoy eating by chewing comfortably is an important quality of life issue”, Hughes says. Before you are determined to be a good candidate for the procedure, it is essential that your dental health be assessed. Healthy gums and good bone structure are requirements for dental implants. However, sometimes there is inadequate gum or boney support in the mouth. In this case, bone or soft tissue grafts may be placed to create enough healthy tissue for future implant placement. Successful implant surgery relies on excellent technique as well as healthy oral tissue. “Dentists that perform implant procedures will do a thorough analysis to determine oral health
status and feasibility first”, Hughes explained. “We want to make sure that before any specific treatment plan is decided upon, the patient has a solid foundation for implant treatment to be successful.” Smokers or individuals who use other tobacco will most likely be required to change this part of their lifestyle before they decide to undertake the procedure. “While tobacco use could certainly have led to the need for implants in the first place, continued use of these destructive products certainly compromise the health and longevity of the implants”, said Hughes. Quitting smoking is beneficial for general health as well as oral health. “Implants can be adversely affected by oral disease brought on from
tobacco use. Thus, it’s a good idea to stop unhealthy habits before getting implants”, Hughes said. Dental implants can be a source of pride and joy for many people, as they are able to begin to feel like themselves again. New advances in dentistry now allows for some patients to receive implants completed in one day’s office visit. “We just started offering the one day procedure a couple months ago and have seen very positive results from it”, Hughes said. “The qualifications are even more rigid than for standard implants, so careful analysis of the patient’s condition is required”. It is important to note too that dental implants are generally not recommended for tooth replacement
in children. In some cases however, mini implants anchors might be recommended as part of a child’s orthodontic treatment. Dental implants, like many other dental procedures, may not be covered by a patient’s insurance. It is recommended you review the specifics of your dental insurance coverage with the dental implant office administrator. “Dental implants certainly are the best way to replace missing teeth. They restore proper function, form and appearance of the teeth better than any other technology available now or in the foreseeable future,” said Dr. Hughes and he added “once patients experience how wonderful the results are, the satisfaction rate is very high.”

How to Choose an RV When you’re ready to buy a recreational vehicle, there are going to be a lot of questions running through your mind. A little research will go a long way toward making sure you get the best deal for your money, as well as making sure your RV is functional for years to come. A good resource when you’re getting ready for your first RV is other RV owners. If you have friends or family who are RV owners, ask to see their vehicles. Walk around and get a feel for what your money will buy you, which brands stand the test of time and which don’t, as well as what issues RV owners of today seem to have problems with. Also, it’s a good idea to research on the Internet. RV message boards are a dime a dozen as the nomadic lifestyle becomes more popular, and by reading up on brands and styles, you’ll save yourself a lot of wondering at the sales lot. Much like used cars, RVs are available previously owned from both dealers and private parties. These can range from affordable trailers or campers which fit on the back of a truck, to
ultra-luxury “land yachts” with features such as plasma TVs and full-service kitchens. Knowing what you want out of your RV experience is important. “We see customers come with the intent to buy one type of travel trailer, then realize they don’t have the proper vehicle to pull it”, says Marvin Oetjen, owner of Kamper’s Supply in Carterville. Ask yourself questions about what you want out of your RV. What kind of size, style, or brand are you looking for? How much are you willing to spend? Are you intent on the idea of a new RV or are you willing to buy a used one? What level of service fits you best? “Most dealerships have a wide variety of models, so it is important you look at each one and find the one that’s the best fit for your intended use”, Oetjen said. Answering these questions, as well as any others you can think of, will put you on the salesman's level when you reach the lot, and you’ll be able to converse confidently without becoming confused. Construction is an important issue with RVs as well. Will you be living out of your vehicle for an
Page 16 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
extended period of time while you tour the country, or will you be using it for one or two vacations a year? How many people will typically be traveling with you? Some RV parks have restrictions on size, so which RV’s are more widely accepted than others? “We have many customers who travel very extensively with their trailers, some going to other parts of the country for many months. Knowing what the requirements are of the places you’ll be camping at is essential to finding the right unit”, says Oetjen. Checking with the Better Business Bureau and the state attorney general’s office will help you find dealers who garner a large number of complaints, or even lawsuits. By study-
ing the data from these sources, you won’t be able to find a reputable dealer, but it will help rule out the sellers you want to avoid. Many dealers will also provide incentives to buy from them, such as free upgrades or excellent terms of finance. While these add-ons can rope you in, always be skeptical of whether or not you’re getting a good deal, or if you’re just being suckered into a bad one. “A deal may sound good, but again, you must be careful that you are buying a unit that fits your needs”, Oetjen says. Once again, education on the subject comes in handy here. It’s a good idea to take an RV owner with you to the lot, if possible. Most RV owners will be able to
share their experiences and assure that you don’t get snowed under by special deals designed to rid the lot of faulty merchandise or overpriced vehicles. Make sure your dealer has an on-site service department, or at the very least a contract with a reputable RV repair shop. RV repairs are very specialized and different from regular vehicles, and the last thing you want is to have an awesome warranty on your RV that is backed up by a sub-par service shop. “Make sure you check the credentials of the service department and make sure they are well-trained. Excellent maintenance of your unit is essential to having a safe feeling while on the road”, says Oetjen. With a little bit of research, you can make a wise choice in your RV, and probably get an excellent deal to boot. Browse many lots, many websites, and talk to RV owners to see what they say about particular models or manufacturers. Read magazines with reviews on RVs, especially the type you’re looking for. By educating yourself, you’ll ensure that you get the most out your RV for years to come.

How to Choose an Assisted Living Facility For many people, the time will come when living independently at home will no longer be a viable option. When you begin looking for an assisted living community for yourself or for a family member, there are a number of things to consider before making a final decision. Of course, the cost of the community will play a large role in the decision making process. You need to have a clear understanding of the cost and what is included with the cost. Some facilities have an all-inclusive monthly cost, while others have additional charges for special services. There are programs through the state that may offset the cost of assisted living if you meet the requirements. “Most communities work very hard to help families understand the financial criteria that one must meet in order to qualify for financial aid in assisted living, says Amanda Garver, Administrator at River to River Residential in Herrin. The quality of care and
overall record of satisfaction others have experienced should also factor into your choice of community. You can do an online check of many assisted living communities, apartments, or facilities. Checking directly with people who live within a community or who have family members living there will give you valuable information. You should always visit the communities you are considering as possible options. While visiting, look carefully at the condition of the building, view their calendar of events to see if they offer activities that interest you or the person you are helping with the decision making process. Talk with residents, share a meal, and ask questions both of the staff, the residents, and the management team. “Most communities have staff on duty at all times that can give tours to families interested in their community”, says Garver. When you initially begin planning a move to an as-
Page 18 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
sisted living community, your requirements may be minimal. You or your family member may simply need a place to live where there is more security and less responsibility. Having someone readily available in case of a fall or illness may be a main reason for moving into an assisted care community. “Make certain the staff at the community you are visiting can assist you with all activities of daily living”, Garver says. It is very important to consider what the community can offer you as your needs change. You may begin having mobility issues, which means the size and layout of the community would be a concern. It may become necessary for you to rely on someone to assist you in self administration of your medication, manage your doctor appointments, provide transportation, and even at some point provide personal care for you. “Transportation to and from doctor appointments is usually a big concern, as these are often
things that family member find hard to make time for, but are vital for residents of the community”, says Garver. Some assisted living facilities provide care at a progressive level. Others require that you be able to maintain a certain level of independence in order to continue living there. In most cases, it is best to select a community that can and will accommodate changes that occur in your level of independence. You want your experience or the experience of your family member to be positive while living in an assisted living community. You can be more assured that the move will be less stressful and more pleasant if you choose a community that closely resembles the lifestyle you are accustomed to. “Many facilities have a wide range of activities available, some offered onsite and others that require transportation offsite. You want to make sure what is offered is of interest to you”, says Garver.
If you are in relatively good health and like to exercise, you should look for a community that has an exercise room or a secure place to walk. If you enjoy socializing with others, check out the common areas of the community. Look for a library and a shared activity room. If you are the type of person who enjoys time outdoors, you should definitely check out the possible outdoor areas available to you at the community. An enclosed patio or small garden area can be a welcome diversion that will prevent a feeling of confinement. Keep in mind, the choice to move isn't easy. Your goal is to find the best possible alternative to home. You also want to find a comfortable, affordable place that will satisfy your long term needs. “Make sure you understand with how the community will adjust to your changing needs, as this will be your new home and you should feel as comfortable as possible there”, says Garver.

How to Choose a Gym Joining a gym is an excellent step on the path to a healthier lifestyle, for both experienced fitness enthusiasts and those newly resolved to get in shape. The benefits of exercise are well-known: it releases endorphins, elevating mood and fighting stress; it builds muscle, which more effectively burns calories; it increases energy and improves sleep; it can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of some types of cancer, osteoporosis, and Type 2 diabetes. “At many gyms, the age of members has no limit”, says Michelle Cottonaro, General Manager for World of Fitness in Herrin. “Exercise gives young children and teens the energy to handle the hectic lifestyles they lead, while regular exercise for older adults maintains their flexibility and allows them to partake in active functions”. However, any fitness regimen can be easy to begin but difficult to maintain. The excuses are varied. Lack of time, lack of motivation, or simple boredom all get in the way of forming good fitness habits. A gym works against the latter problem by providing a variety of equipment, programs and teachers to switch up workouts and keep exercise interesting. Membership is a great way
to meet other people with similar goals, who can help offer motivation. And because you have already paid for the gym use, it is more difficult to claim lack of time as a reason to skip exercising. “Consider a gym that has very flexible hours or allows you to use as you wish through card access”, Cottonaro recommends. “This will allow you to use the gym at your leisure and hopefully, allow you to go more often”. Once the decision has been made to join a gym, the choices can be rather daunting. The key is to look for a gym facility that can help attain individual fitness goals by motivating and inspiring its members. The right gym is not necessarily the most popular one; not every gym has the right services and programs for everyone’s abilities and goals. “Make sure the gym has equipment and programs that fit your fitness goals”, says Cottonaro. Both the seasoned gym member and the new patron who has never set foot on a treadmill should have a clear idea before signing the paperwork of the gym’s programs and services, so that the individual’s specific requirements will be fulfilled. Personal trainers will appeal to gym members serious about reaching
Page 20 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
their goals with realistic programs and professional guidance. They also offer motivation by means of encouragement, sometimes gentle and sometimes more rigorous. A good personal trainer can occasionally seem without pity or compassion, but they will always work toward the client’s victory over personal goals, leading the client to not only achieve but surpass them while ensuring that healthy progress is kept. “A good personal trainer will recommend to you a schedule that will challenge you, but not overwork you to the point that the workout is too tough”, Cottonaro says. New gym members value personal trainers not only for their guidance but also for their health assessments, ensuring that the body is pushed to improvement, but at a healthy, safe pace. Trainers can also offer advice on nutrition in addition to devising a gym routine and monitoring physical progress. Many people inexperienced with gyms have a preconceived picture of weight lifting machines and treadmills, but gyms offer much more. Low-impact workouts are available in wide varieties to make workouts accessible to those with joint pain
or other health restrictions. Pilates is one such option that makes use of smooth motions and gliding actions to tone the physique and improve flexibility. “Make sure your gym has a variety of classes or that what they have are at an introductory level so if you are new to working out, you can participate and build up your intensity”, says Cottonaro. Another option available at many gyms is participation in aqua aerobics. This involves a comprehensive workout, which made easier on the body due to the buoyancy of the pool and also challenging due to the resistance of the water. While most gyms offer a pool, not all provide an instructor for water aerobics. Those who suffer joint pain or some disabilities would do well to inquire about
the availability of group or private instruction for an excellent workout that involves both cardio and endurance. Finally, in choosing a gym, a potential member should look not only to present goals but to the future. Whether interested in pilates or group aerobics to music, weight lifting or water aerobics, the goal is to constantly improve. The gym coordinator should be able to advise members on available class levels to ensure that goals can be met and set higher as skills continue to increase. Cottonaro added, “You should challenge your gym staff to ensure that you are achieving goals you’ve set or find ways to improve your plan to do so”.

How To Choose A Dentist Choosing the right dentist can make a world of difference in a person’s smile and overall health. More than ever before individuals are choosing a dentist in hopes of finding a friend and ally ready to help create a gorgeous, healthy smile while offering a pleasant dental experience. Word of mouth referrals from friends and family are one of the best ways to find the dentist that is right for you. After a referral is obtained you will want to view the dentist’s website to learn about the dentist’s background, education, experience, and dental specialties as well as office policies and services. The next step is to make your first call to the office. You will want to inquire about the features of the first exam in their office. The first exam for an adult should be a comprehensive exam to evaluate overall dental health. Be sure to ask if you will have enough time with the dentist to have your concerns and questions answered or, when necessary, whether a follow-up consultation is
included with your visit. Dr. Guebert in Energy, IL provides a thorough initial exam; “First we spend time with patients to learn what they want from us as their dental team. We then take a full set of x-rays, intraoral camera photos, and probe for gum disease. A new technology in light enhanced early oral cancer detection is also done. We then discuss our findings with the patient. We will also do a cosmetic evaluation if the patient is interested.” Next, inquire about the
dentist’s standard for overall care. Ensure that the office regularly checks for periodontal (gum) disease and is committed to a regular regimen of x-rays for early detection of cavities and bone loss. Inquire if oral cancer screenings are a regular part of every hygiene visit. You should evaluate whether the dental staff is friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. You will want the reception staff to make you feel welcome to the office. Because dentistry is a very personal,
one-on-one type of medical service, you will want to find a dental team that gives you quality time to build a relationship. You should not feel that the team rushes through your treatment or that you are just a number. Be sure that the dentist thoroughly discusses treatment and possible options for care. You will also want to know about financial policies. Inquire if the office will submit your insurance claims for you and give you an estimate of your out-of-pocket expense before your dental visit. Ask if the office provides affordable payment plans. If you have dental anxiety, be sure to ask about services to make your dental treatment more comfortable. Dr. Guebert uses NuCalm in his office. “NuCalm is an all natural technology that reduces dental anxiety by inducing deep relaxation. With NuCalm there are no shots or drugs and the patient feels refreshed at the end of the appointment. It makes a big difference for patients with anxiety,” says Dr. Guebert.
If your needs include cosmetic procedures, be sure that the dentist provides before and after photos of cosmetic cases done in his office. These photos are often posted to the office website. Ask if the office will provide a complimentary cosmetic evaluation. If the dentist does not perform certain procedures, ask about their referral process. The purpose of a dentist’s collaboration with specialists is to make available to patients the most advanced training and experience possible for specific procedures. Be sure the dental team provides you with the necessary referral information and is willing to assist you in the process. Outstanding dental offices will have quality, professional relationships with specialists. Your teeth and smile are important to your overall health and appearance. Be sure to take the time to find a dentist that is your friend and ally in maintaining a healthy, attractive smile!

How to Choose a Health Mobility Company If you are suffering from a lack of mobility, either in the short term or the long term, finding the right mobility equipment can make a big difference in your life. Unfortunately, choosing the mobility equipment that is right for you can be somewhat difficult. This issue is only complicated by accessibility requirements, medical needs and the limits of your financial situation. This makes the large number of options both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on how you want to think about it. The good news is that the large number of choices available means it is almost always possible for you to find an option that is perfect for your needs. If you take the time to narrow down exactly what it is that you are looking for, it will make the search much less difficult and the results more satisfying. The first thing that you will need to do is determine what type of equipment is going to be necessary and whether or not it will be enough to suffice in the future. As an example, a patient who is older is
more likely to have a growing need for assistance with their mobility. In many cases it is possible for you to form a long lasting relationship with a health mobility company. They will be able to work with you and your changing needs as circumstances continue to move forward. Not all future needs can be predicted, of course, but mobility specialists can help you gain an understanding of what may be necessary. Advanced Mobility of Carterville has over 50 years of experience to help with all of your mobility needs. The search can be narrowed down by considering your current level of mobility. Is walking assistance required, or will the full body weight need to be supported? If it has been determined that a cane or walker is all that is necessary, it should not be too difficult to find the right equipment. These can be found in many places, including pharmacies and large department stores. On the other hand, if a device for full transportation is necessary, there are a few different options to
Page 24 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
consider. The most important thing is that the machine can be used by the patient to its full capacity. As an example, if a person can not use their fingers or forearms, scooters are not a good choice because of the fact that they require both hands. Alternatively, power chairs have many more options when it comes to
steering. Another consideration is the amount of weight that the device will need to be able to support. If the capacity of the device is exceeded, the warranty will be voided. This means that an expensive repair cost will be incurred, or an entirely new device will be required.
A power chair or scooter needs to be stored, of course, and this is another factor to take into consideration. If it needs to be moved around a great deal, the weight of the device is important, and it is nice to choose an option that can be folded. If, on the other hand, it does not need to be transported a great deal, it is better to choose an option based primarily on its comfort. Once the needs have been properly addressed, the next step is to determine how the purchases should be made. Online businesses can be convenient because you do not need to leave the home. At the same time, there is no face-to-face contact, and you have no opportunity to see or try the equipment before you make the purchase. The benefit of a physical store is that you can communicate with people directly about what they have to offer. If you need further assistance, you can simply go back to the store again.

How to Choose a Medical Equipment Provider As people age or face debilitating diseases, the right medical equipment can make a big difference in the quality and comfort of everyday life. Choosing the proper medical equipment is critical. Whether a person needs home oxygen, personal mobility products or CPAP machines to help with breathing at night, medical equipment ought to be sturdy, comfortable and engineered to do its job effectively. How do you know what equipment will be best for you? Always follow your doctor's advice, of course, and look for an experienced, local company to provide for your needs. RESPIRATION EXPERTISE One of the most common reasons to look for a medical equipment provider because of breathing problems. Oxygen delivery is one of the most frequent needs that arises, and CPAP
machines and supplies are becoming more common for people with sleeping or breathing issues. If possible, look for an equipment provider that has a licensed respiratory therapist on staff. They can help you use the breathing equipment properly so that it is comfortable and effective, and they have the specific training to give you advice that could help you breathe better. PERSONAL SERVICE It's also a good idea to find a locally based equipment provider because of the in-person service you can expect to receive over the long haul. Picking the right medical equipment takes experience, so it's important to find a company that can help you not only get the right supplies delivered on time, but also with the staff that can teach you how to use your equipment and give you the personalized service you deserve. There are some national
Page 26 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
companies that sell medical equipment, but a hometown provider is often a better choice. If there's a problem with the equipment, for example, you can pick up the phone and call someone right in your own city to talk about it. And if you need medical supplies quickly, you won't have to wait on something to arrive from out of state. GOVERNMENT BILLING Because medical equipment is usually covered by government health care plans — either Medicare or Medicaid — you should look for an equipment provider that can handle the billing for you. Dealing with government agencies isn't easy. There can be a lot of paperwork to file, rules to follow and deadlines to meet, so always look for a provider that knows all about Medicare and Medicaid billing. In many cases, Medicare or Medicaid can be billed directly so that the
patient pays little or no out-of-pocket charges for their equipment. Picking a company with lots of experience in this area can help make the process go smoothly to save you time, money and hassle. MOBILITY EXPERTISE Since another common medical issue is mobility — requiring walkers, scooters or wheelchairs — you should look for a company that has experience in this area. They should offer a wide range of products at different price points to meet your needs, from motorized scooters with all the bells and whistles to simple canes or walkers. Lift chairs can be another option to help with mobility. They're as comfortable as they are useful, lifting up from the base to help a person stand up on their own. OTHER SUPPLIES Finally, you should look for a company that offers a
wide range of other products, even if you don't need them right now. Since medical needs can be unpredictable, it's always good to have a full-featured medical equipment and supply provider that you're already familiar with. Finding a full featured medical equipment and supply provider with a pharmacy is also very beneficial in creating convenience with a “one stop shop” location for your healthcare needs. Common needs include diabetic shoes and supplies, ostomy supplies, and all the accessories that may be required with oxygen or CPAP equipment. If you can find a company with a long track record of good customer service — including a well-trained staff, thorough selection and the ability to bill Medicaid and Medicare — it can be a big step toward living a more healthy, comfortable and active life.

How to Choose a Physical Therapist Physical therapy can help you function at your personal best. Whether your pain is in your neck, shoulders, back, feet, or anywhere in between physical therapy has the ability to alleviate it. Physical therapists are health care professionals who exam and provide treatment to individuals who have medical problems or health related conditions that limit mobility including the ability to perform functional and recreational activities in their daily lives. During a physical therapy examination, an individualized treatment plan is developed to promote movement, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. Physical therapists help people to understand their body in order to achieve long-term health benefits. In many instances, physical therapists can help individuals avoid painful, invasive and expensive surgery. For example, it is known that physical therapy along with comprehensive medical management can be just as effective as surgery with relieving symptoms of moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee. When surgery is necessary physical therapy is also a
major component in the recovery process in order to regain movement and function. Whether surgery is required or not, physical therapists use a “hands on” approach in order to meet an individual’s personal needs. A variety of treatments are offered including: therapeutic exercises, aquatic therapy, functional training, electrotherapy,
Page 28 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
ultrasound, traction, light/ low level laser therapy, iontophoresis, taping and personalized education just to name a few. Some of the common conditions treated by physical therapists in an outpatient setting are: arthritis, back pain, neck pain, joint problems (knee, shoulder, hip, spine, elbow, wrist, ankle and joint replacements),
fractures, sprains, strains, balance disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, fractures, hand injuries, headaches, osteoporosis, weakness, work related injuries and sports injuries. Physical therapy can also be provided in a variety of settings for other medical conditions and injuries. In addition to providing treatment, physical therapists can provide other services such as Pre/Post offer employment testing, Fit for duty testing, Job site analysis, Ergonomic Consultations, Nerve Conduction Studies, Fitness programs, Sport screening, Balance screening and Scoliosis screening. Physical therapists are highly trained health care providers that apply research and proven techniques to help restore function and alleviate pain. Physical therapists graduating today are required to have a graduate degree (either master’s degree or clinical doctorate) from an accredited physical therapist program. All practicing physical therapists have passed the national and state licensure examination prior to practicing physical therapy. In Illinois, physical therapists and physical
therapists assistants are required to attend continuing education prior to renewal of their state license every two years. The state board may be contacted to confirm licensing status of your physical therapist. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a national professional association with the goals of promoting physical therapy practice, research, and education. The APTA is also a tool that consumers can use to learn about physical therapy, conditions, view health related articles and find physical therapist in their area that are APTA members. Individuals can find information at the APTA website at www.apta.org or by phone at 800/999-APTA (2782). Choosing the right physical therapist is vital to successfully reaching your goals. It is important to find a physical therapist that has experience in treating your personal condition in order to help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent further injury. Physical therapy care is a personal experience, so you will want to choose a therapist that you can trust and are comfortable with.

How to Work With an Interior Decorator By Angela Rowe, DDCD Whether purchasing a new home or redecorating an existing one, most homeowners find themselves facing the age-old questions of “where do I begin?” and “how do I turn this house into my home?” Strangely enough, when homeowners need work done in the home, professionals are immediately called in – plumbers, electricians, landscapers, and roofers. Why then do so many still shy from using the services of a professional interior decorator when making important decorative decisions and purchases for their home? Once considered a luxury for only the very wealthy, decorating services are more of a necessity for today’s busy homeowner who simply can’t afford to make costly mistakes. Professional decorators know how to work with your budget,
your lifestyle, and your design vision. Selecting the person you want to decorate your home is a combination of compatible personalities and tastes. During your initial consultation, ask to review the portfolio of the decorator to assure yourself that (s)he is capable of working in diverse styles. This is also the time to judge whether your personalities are a good fit. Remember that you will be working together for several weeks, if not months. Working with a professional designer should be an enjoyable experience. Since interior decorating projects are highly personal and collaborative, the final results are always much more successful when the lines of communication are open and ideas are freely discussed. Be candid with your decorator regarding such important elements as priorities, timing, budgets and tastes. If
a style, color, or item is suggested that you do not like, feel free to tell him or her. The best way to make the project yours is to communicate because when all is said and done, the designer won’t be living there, you will. To ensure that you get off to the right start with your decorator and also get the results you are looking for, keep in mind the following tips and basic guidelines to follow before the project actually starts. Be a keen observer. Consciously make note of what catches your interest as you peruse decorating magazines and/or the internet for interesting rooms and makeovers. Start a file of colors, patterns and designs that appeal to you. You may notice a chandelier, mirror, color combination, or window treatment that you like. Once you clip and track these for a brief period, you will be better able to draw a conclusion as
Page 30 Sunday, September 25, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan
to your personal style and be better able to communicate these tastes to your interior decorator. Take an honest inventory of your existing décor to determine which pieces you want to keep. Assess your furnishings the way you periodically review your wardrobe. • Are you overrun with inherited mismatched pieces? • Do you have too many permanent floral arrangements? • Do you have too many knick-knacks with no rhyme or reason? • Do you resemble a dorm room with handme-downs? • Are your furnishings and color combinations completely outdated? Plan to keep the pieces you truly love and put all others on the to-be-replacedeventually list. Talk and the decorator should listen. Discuss your family’s lifestyle with the decorator. • How do you want
your home to feel? • Do you entertain? • Do you have children, grandkids, and/ or pets in the home? • Do you have a timetable for completion? • Establish your priorities. Which rooms or projects are most important for you to complete? Do you and your spouse agree on these priorities? • Determine a budget! If you are not sure how much to investment in your project, the decorator will be able to help you to establish and set goals. Based upon your initial consultation, your designer will present you with fabric samples, sketches, and pictures for your project. Since professionals have access to a world of options unavailable in retail stores, be reasonable about asking to see more and more of everything available. One of the most important services a professional offers is sparing you the confu-
sion of the myriad choices available. Trust your decorator’s advice and stay focused on the overall design goal. Give your decorator some latitude to decide for you the small details such as trims, pillows, accessories and botanicals. Your project will move forward more smoothly if (s) he doesn’t have to get your approval on every button and candle. The last piece of advice is to give change a chance. The most dramatic changes usually come from introducing a new color or a different pattern. Don’t panic! Just remember that all change – even for the better – requires a period of adjustment. Most homeowners who have redecorated their home will be quick to tell you “I should have done it sooner!”
