How to Choose a Good Weight Loss Clinic B
ased on recent statistics, a majority of us now need to lose weight. Excess pounds are not only tough to carry around but constitute a threat to our health. Losing weight can be quite a challenge as anyone who has tried can attest. The process requires diligence and dedication. Temptations are everywhere, and we all feel guilty after we “cheat.” Sometimes, we are unable to lose weight without assistance, and a good weight loss clinic may be the answer. Such a clinic will help you realistically identify how much weight you need to lose, discover problems and issues, offer assistance with planning and help keep you motivated and accountable. There are dozens of options available, and each weight loss clinic may have its own approach. Selecting the weight loss clinic that most closely suits your needs may help you reach your own weight loss goals. Many weight reduction clinics have flamboyant advertisements utilizing famous people. This does not necessarily mean that program is the best one for you. Here are a few tips to help you find the ideal plan for you. Start by looking up all of the
weight reduction clinics in your area. Look up their websites and review the information. This will give you an idea of what each has to offer, what pricing options there are and a feel for what to expect. Use the information you obtained from the websites to narrow down your choices, and then go visit each one. Bring a notebook to jot down information. Observe the way everyone there is dealt with by the personnel. They should be enthusiastic and professional with everyone, not just potential customers. Staff members should also be knowledgeable and competent to answer questions and address issues you might have. Visit all of the clinics on your list and do not register with anyone until you do and until you can check them out with the Better Business Bureau and online reviewers. Previous as well as existing clients are often willing to talk about their own experiences, negative and positive. Every clinic will seemingly feature a great plan. You need to determine which is ideal for you, and reading what others have to say will help you do that. It is always beneficial to gain an understanding of what others
have experienced and if they had positive results. Always remember however, that what is effective for just one individual will not necessarily benefit another. That’s why you should not necessarily be swayed by celebrity endorsements. Keep your personal requirements in mind at all times. You can ask the weight reduction clinics for the names of a few of their own customers. It is possible to get in touch with previous as well as existing customers to get some understanding of their experience. A clinic with a good reputation won't have any issue permitting you to consult with a few of their present and previous clients. It's essential to verify that the clinic also features a follow-up system to assist you maintaining a healthy and balanced way of life. It's always challenging to get rid of body weight as well as remain in shape, so it will be important that you always obtain assistance from the people who helped you accomplish your weight loss objectives to begin with. Before committing to a particular clinic, become familiar with the different plans they offer. Find out what support they offer such as motivation as well as factual as-
sistance. Find out whether you are going to need to buy prepackaged meals as well as follow a good stringent diet regime. If you prefer a system that permits you to prepare your own meals or budget, make sure this is permitted. Several clinics provide online courses, and some provide face-toface get-togethers and weigh-ins. If possible, ask for a trial membership. Many weight loss clinics will allow trial periods. This offers you an opportunity to try the system prior to committing to a complete membership. Use the time you spend to create good nutrition and exercise habits. After you have attained your own physical fitness as well as weight loss goals, you need to have these good habits to help you maintain your nee weight and fitness levels. All in all, utilizing the services of a good weight loss clinic can go a long way to helping you succeed. It is easier to adhere to a plan when you have the assistance of knowledgeable and encouraging people who can help you accomplish your own weight loss goals.

How to Choose a Storage Building C
hoosing an outdoor storage building isn’t as straightforward as you might think. You need to weight carefully the list of available options open to you before you sign the contract. Don’t be overwhelmed by your wealth of choices. Take a deep breathe, narrow down your list to include only those facilities that offer all the characteristics you require and then make a wellconsidered decision. Price and appearance aren’t necessarily the best criteria on which to base your decision. There are three core qualities an outdoor storage building should have if you’re going to get your money’s worth. CONSTRUCTION Price is important. Durability often goes hand in hand with a slightly higher tag, so look for a unit featuring quality material and construction for the best results over time. Unlike residential and commercial construction, there’s no standardized building code for outside storage buildings. Most companies take pride in their offerings and produce quality products with good craftsmanship and made from solid materials. However, some companies are out to make the fast buck and the
quick kill. Their reputation means very little to them because their goal is selling as many storage buildings as possible before they get out of the business. The best storage buildings share many of the construction details and features of a well-built home. The walls are sturdy and the decking and roof trusses are solid. Combine these components with a weather-tight roof and you have a storage building that will last for many years without leaking and ruining your possession. Flooring should be constructed of solid joists and decking thick enough to prevent sagging. The flooring is going to need to withstand the weight of a lawnmower, a garden tiller and similar heavyweight lawn and garden equipment. Insist on an outdoor storage building that meets or exceeds your expectations for the best results. Pay a little more and get a better floor. DESIGN Sturdy construction is only part of the story. The overall design of the storage unit will affect affordability but buy the best-designed building that fits into your budget. Floors, walls and roofing need to be sturdy, but all that durability is wasted if you can’t put your unit together easily. For the same
Page 4 Sunday, September 23, 2012 The Southern Illinoisan
reason, choose a design that provides plenty of room for installing shelving while still leaving enough floorspace for parking your tractor and storing your tiller. People use storage buildings for a variety of reasons. Yours needs to fit your individual requirements. Maybe you need more windows, a skylight or indoor electrical lighting. Perhaps you are going to need a wider door or one that opens in a specific direction to accommodate the tools and equipment you’re going to store inside. One shelf might be enough, or you may need more to hold all your power tools. Spaces for installing hooks might make storing long-handled tools more efficient. Spending a lot of money on a mini-Taj Mahal probably isn’t a smart move. On the other hand, an attractive storage building should complement the exterior of your home. You can choose from a wide array of siding, trim and roof shingles without overshooting your budget. You might not have much interest in the appearance of the storage building. You just want it to do the job, hold your possessions and kept out the wind and rain. However, an attractive exterior doesn’t add much to the price tag and adds to the appeal of your house and
property. THE RETAILER Choose your retailer with care. Remember, it’s your money and you want to get the best value and quality. If you’re all thumbs with hand tools, you might do well dealing with a retailer that offers building assembly on your property. Misinterpreted blueprints and unintentional gouges from a screwdriver detract from the appearance of even backyard construction. Let a professional handle the assembly while you admire the view from your kitchen window. Payment plans can be an invaluable option when you need the extra space a storage building offers but you are short on cash. By having the building in your possession, you save the monthly rental expense of a commercial storage facility. That’s money that stays in your pocket rather than enriching someone else. Weighing the variables of construction, design and a quality retailer against all the other factors in choosing an outdoor storage building makes good sense. This is the best way to get your money’s worth while gaining functional storage space that will last for years.

How to Choose a Gym W
e all know that exercise is good for us. However, if working out is so good for us, then why don’t we do it more often? Many people inexperienced with gyms have preconceived images of bulky weight lifting machines and fast treadmills, while in reality gyms offer much more. “A comfortable atmosphere at a workout facility is the #1 reason people will stick with their program”, says Michelle Cottonaro, general manager at World of Fitness in Herrin. The truth is that good fitness habits are hard to form and most fitness regimens are difficult to maintain. We create excuses or simply lack the time and motivation to exercise. If you are finished with excuses and are determined to live a healthier lifestyle, then finding a good gym is a great first step on the path toward a better way of life. The benefits of exercise are well known. It releases endorphins, which improve mood and fight stress while also increasing energy levels and improving sleep. Not only does exercise in and of itself burn calories, but the muscle you build from exercise helps you burn calories more effectively. Regular exercise also lowers blood pressure, while reducing the risk of some types of cancer, osteoporosis and Type 2 diabetes. “There is no doubt that a regular fitness routine can not only help treat health conditions you may already be expe-
riencing but in many cases, can stop future issues from starting”, Cottonaro said. Gyms help to cure the boredom sometimes experienced while working out. These facilities provide a variety of equipment, programs, classes and teachers, in an effort to mix up workouts and keep exercise interesting. Becoming a member of a gym increases your chances of working out; since you have already paid for the gym use, it is harder to make up excuses to skip exercising. Membership also provides you with the opportunity to meet other people with similar exercise goals, who can offer motivation and support. “If you can find a regular partner to come with you to workout, not only is the motivation greater, but it holds you
accountable to them as well”, Cottonaro said. Once you’ve decided to join a gym, the number of options available can make the choice daunting. The most important aspect in looking for a gym is to find one that helps its members attain their individual fitness goals by inspiring its members. The right gym for you may not be the right gym for someone else. Each fitness center has different classes, programs and services to help members work on their abilities and goals. Upon joining a gym, you should be made aware of the programs that are offered in order to fulfill each individual’s specific needs; not every place will have the right services for everyone. Personal trainers are useful, as they offer inspiration by means of encouragement, ranging from mild and up-lifting to severe and harsh. They are of most assistance to members who have mapped out realistic goals using the aid of exercise programs and professional guidance. “Personal trainers can greatly aid people new to exercise, in finding the right program to meet their individual goals”, Cottonaro added. A good personal trainer will not work toward a client’s personal goal; instead, they work toward goals over and beyond the original goal. This leads the client not only to achieve, but to surpass their goals. If your trainer seems
without compassion or pity, it is only because they are pushing you for your own good. “A little complaining about how hard the program is can be beneficial in the end”, Cottonaro said with a smile. Not only do professional trainers offer their guidance, especially to new gym members, but they also offer health assessments. This way, the trainers can push your body, but at a pace that is safe and healthy. Along with assessments, trainers also give advice on nutrition, creating gym routines and monitoring your workout progress. For those with health restrictions such as joint pain, low-impact workouts are available in wide varieties. One such low-impact workout is yoga, as it uses smooth motions and gliding actions to tone muscles and improve flexibility. Cottonaro added insight on this topic. “While many gyms offer classes, do your research and look for a facility your comfortable in and one that offers the specific types of classes to meet your needs. Not all instructors are the same either, so ask if a free class or two is available before deciding to join.” Lastly, when deciding on a gym, a potential member should look not only to his present goals but also to those in the future. Whether you are interested in yoga, weight lifting or just overall better health, your aim should be to improve constantly.

How to Recognize the Signs of Heart Attack ‘As human beings, we have a tendency to believe the pain we are having is not a heart attack. But more often than not, when the classic symptoms are seen, people really need to get to the emergency room right away.’
Author: Varadendra Panchamukhi, M.D. Interventional Cardiologist Prairie Cardiovascular, Carbondale, IL
S
igns of a heart attack vary by sex. However, if you think you are having a heart attack at any time, stop whatever you are doing and have someone call 911. Seconds are vital when treating a heart attack. Time is muscle.
MEN Chest Pain For men, the first sign of a heart attack is often chest pain that lasts several minutes. While everyone experiences minor chest pain from time to time, a person having a heart attack will feel severe chest pressure. This pressure will sometimes travel from the chest to the shoulder area, arms, neck, jaw, and back. Most ordinary chest pain passes when you force yourself to relax. The chest pain from a heart attack will not go away. Normally, it will intensify with the passage of time. Shortness of Breath The man who is having a heart attack will have a shortness of breath. It will feel like he is being smothered. Dizzy

The man who is having a heart attack will often feel dizzy. This is caused by lack of air in the body, especially to the brain. The man who is having a heart attack may get so short of breath that he faints. Teeth and Jaw Pain Interestingly, researchers have found that some men who have a heart attack will feel intense pain in his teeth and jaw, either isolated or as a radiation from chest. Cold Sweats The man who is having a heart attack may experience cold sweats. These sweats usually leave the man feeling cold and clammy, with a sense of impending doom. Frequent Burps The man having a heart attack may also burp frequently.
WOMEN The signs of a heart attack in women are harder to diagnose. Women are also sometimes not as quick to be diagnosed by a physician. Therefore, it is very important to understand the differences between how a man feels when he is having a heart attack and a woman feels when she is having a heart attack. While all the features listed for men are also likely to happen in women, the following are additional symptoms: Chest Pressure Like men, a woman having a heart attack will often feel chest pain. However, the chest pain is often lower. This leads some women to feel that the discomfort is coming from their stomachs rather than their chest.
Shortness of Breath Almost six out of 10 women who are having a heart attack feel that they are short of breath. Like men, this will cause the woman to want to rest, which will lessen the symptoms in some cases. Extreme Fatigue The woman having a heart attack will feel unusually tired. They just cannot seem to get enough rest. In fact, this extreme fatigue can precede a heart attack by several weeks. It is important to know the difference between men and women when they are having a heart attack. Knowing these signs can save a life. Seconds really do count, so make sure and follow through by seeking emergency treatment immediately. Call 911 if in doubt. Without prompt treatment, lasting damage may be inevitable.

Tips for choosing the right nursing home W
hen your loved one needs to move into a nursing home, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. What should you look for as you make that decision? Quality of care, cleanliness and safety are all important factors. But equally important are the intangibles. Determine how residents are treated Are residents treated with dignity and respect? Do they receive compassionate care? Are their needs and desires taken into consideration on a daily basis? You want your loved one to live in a place that can help him or her adjust to the lifestyle changes they’ll be making. Does the home offer a variety of activities for residents? Do volunteers spend time with residents? For faith-based nursing homes, such as Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin, these aspects are an important part of their ministry. Such homes also can provide spiritual comfort and encouragement to residents. With a chaplain on staff, Shawnee Christian offers onsite worship services, Bible studies and regular visits by the chaplain, if desired. Communication between you
give you a tour and discuss what they offer residents. While you’re there, ask yourself, “Is the staff friendly? Do residents look well cared-for? Will my loved one feel comfortable here?” Taking the time to investigate various nursing homes helps ensure that your loved one will live in a place where he or she can get the care and support they deserve. This will give both you and them peace of mind.
and the staff is another important consideration in selecting a nursing home. You want a place where you can work together as a team to make your loved one’s experience as pleasant as possible. Consider therapy options Therapy facilities are also important. Shawnee, for instance, offers a large, well-staffed therapy gym with state-of-the-art equipment and private areas for treatment. In selecting a nursing home, you may also want to ask your loved one’s doctor for a recommendation. Physicians are usually familiar with the level of care given at different nursing homes. You also will need to determine what type of payment the nursing
home accepts. Some, like Shawnee, accept Medicare, Medicaid, private pay and most insurance policies. Others are more limited. Visit the nursing home The best way to make a decision on a nursing home is to visit ones you are considering and determine what kind of atmosphere they have. Your loved one should also visit, if possible. Most nursing homes are glad to The Southern Illinoisan Sunday, September 23, 2012 Page 11

How to Choose a Medical Equipment Provider P
eople often need medical equipment to improve their comfort and quality of life as they age or confront a debilitating disease. Your physician prescribes the type of device or equipment you need to treat your condition. Follow his or her guidelines, then select an experienced provider in your area who can supply you with quality medical equipment and supplies that best meet your needs. RESPIRATION EXPERTISE If you’re a patient with a breathing problem, look for a medical equipment provider in your area whose personnel have extensive training and experience with CPAP machines and supplies, bottled oxygen and related equipment. There should be a certified respiratory therapist on its staff, someone well-qualified to teach you how to use your breathing equipment most comfortably and effectively. The best medical equipment companies not only deliver the right supplies to the right patients at the right time, but employ highly skilled and compassionate personnel. PERSONAL SERVICE Select a locally based medical
equipment provider if at all possible. You are more likely to receive personalized service and experience a shorter response time if you have an emergency. It is also easier to build and maintain a relationship with people you see frequently. This is difficult to do when dealing with a large, impersonal national provider. It is better to rely on a local company for some very practical reasons. Equipment fails and supplies run out. Dealing with a local company means you can pick up the phone and talk to someone right away. Your local provider will dispatch someone to fix your equipment or replenish supplies quickly. A larger company’s nearest facility may be a few hundred miles away, leaving you to wait several days for a technician or urgently needed supplies to arrive. GOVERNMENT BILLING Medical equipment and supplies are often covered by government health care plans such as Medicare and Medicaid. Choose a medical equipment provider experienced in handling patient billing for these plans. Government regulations are complicated, with reams of paperwork
to complete, deadlines to meet and rules to follow. In many cases, the equipment provider can bill Medicare or Medicaid directly, so you pay for very few out-of-pocket expenses. A good company that can do all this for you is worth its weight in gold. MOBILITY EXPERTISE Choose a medical equipment provider with long experience in walkers, scooters and wheelchairs if you have problems with mobility. The provider who carries a wide range of products is the one you should choose. You may only require a simple cane or walker at first, but in time you may need a wheelchair or a motorized scooter with several options. There may come a time when you need a lift chair to assist your mobility. Establishing a relationship with a medical equipment provider from the first is a solid foundation to build on as your needs change over the years. OTHER SUPPLIES Deal with a company that not only carries complicated equipment and devices but also a full range of other supplies. You may not need
them at first, but medical needs change. You may develop other physical conditions. At some time, you may require ostomy supplies; diabetic shoes, hosiery and supplies; home oxygen; CPAP machines and supplies and other types of treatment and monitoring equipment. Choose a medical equipment provider who becomes familiar with your needs over the years and who has developed a better sense of you as a person. You’ll often have a choice of a number of medical equipment suppliers in your town. Talk to your doctor and his or her staff, your family and friends and patients who are using these companies currently. Their recommendations and referrals will provide guidance in finding the supplier who is right for you. Look for a company with good track record of outstanding customer service, the ability to handle Medicare and Medicaid billing for you and respiratory therapists on staff. This is the type of company that can best help you adapt to your changing health in the years to come.

How to Choose an Orthodontist
perfect smile gives an impression of confidence, health, and happiness. While not everyone is born with that perfect set of teeth, a well-trained orthodontist has the skills to create one for his patients. A good orthodontist provides a treatment regimen that is customized to the individual and delivered with compassionate service. Licensed orthodontists all complete similar education and training requirements, but not are equally gifted and caring practitioners. Word-of-mouth recommendations from neighbors, friends, and coworkers provide some of the best information about the orthodontists in your town. People who have had a positive experience while sitting in an orthodontist’s office are usually eager to spread the good word. “Word of mouth from our patients is the best form of PR we could ever hope to have”, says Herrin, Illinois orthodontist Kyle Childers.
SERVICE Good service is one of the prime requirements when searching for an orthodontist. You’re going to be visiting him frequently for a year or more. It’s wise to find one with whom you can build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. “Finding a practice with a consistent and experienced staff can greatly enhance the ease of your relationship with your orthodontist”, Childers says. Most orthodontists offer free initial visits, so observe other factors that
will affect your treatment experience. The patient waiting area should be comforting and soothing. Pay close attention to the way the staff treats you and others. Orthodontic patients are usually children, so don’t overlook their actions and emotions. If they come in with a smile of anticipation, you will know you’re in the right doctor’s office. Dr. Childers, for example, achieves optimal results for his patients in an environment that is friendly and professional. His office offers fun décor, ready cool and warm beverages, and plenty of comfortable seating. His highly trained and experienced staff will ensure that your treatment is comfortable and on schedule. People lead very busy lives these days. An orthodontist who schedules his appointments to reduce waiting time is a treasure, so hold out for someone who respects your time schedule. You should expect to be seated on time for every appointment, as your time is valuable and you should not have to wait. The practice should also strive to stay on target for your complete treatment time. With progressive technology, like Suresmile, the treatment lengths are shortened, along with the number of visits. Dental assistants are active and contributing professional members of your treatment team, so it is important to form a good relationship with them. They perform a number of treatment adjustments and have undergone rigorous training
Page 14 Sunday, September 23, 2012 The Southern Illinoisan
to do this well. Dr. Childers says “Value your employees and provide a fun and professional working atmosphere that benefits both the employees and patients”. Susie, Dr. Childers’ lab assistant, has been with him since he opened in 1990. Most of his employees have also been with the practice quite a while. Having an orthodontist who listens to your questions and provides clear answers is a necessity. You should not just a number on a patient file at any office. Every orthodontist should regard you as a valued patient and treat you accordingly. It is important that patients and parents understand exactly what to expect and what it involves. Dr Childers adds “your orthodontist should be available to answer any questions throughout the course of the treatment process”. TECHNOLOGY There are several orthodontic systems for straightening teeth. The result will usually be the same with the different types, but there may be advantages to one over the other. Each system is quite different from the others in terms of appearance and function. The number of appointments and the length of time may vary between the different techniques used. . One of the newest types of orthodontic treatment is Suresmile. Dr. Childers offers this technologydriven process which offers several important benefits that make the whole “braces” experience much
easier for patients than conventional orthodontics! Suresmile offers shorter treatment times, fewer office visits and less overall discomfort. Invisalign is another breakthrough technique that straightens your teeth without braces, using a series of clear, comfortable aligners that are custom-modeled to fit your teeth. The virtually invisible aligners gradually reposition your teeth into a smile you’ll be proud of. Dr. Childers is an Elite Preferred Provider of Invisalign and has been very pleased with the results of the hundreds of cases he has completed, including the new Teen Invisalign. Dr. Childers also utilizes the Damon System which also delivers faster treatment, fewer appointments, greater comfort and consistent high-quality results. Damon passive self-ligating braces eliminate the need for metal “ties” and removes the need to have your braces “tightened”. You should ask questions about technology. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses and you should ask your doctor to explain why he/she prefers one over the other. Dr. Childers said your orthodontist should be happy to explain the differences between one system and another. A beautiful smile starts with a caring orthodontist that you know and trust. Don’t settle for anything but the best when searching out your new smile!

Considerations for Selecting a Physician A
mong the most crucial steps in ensuring you lead the healthiest lifestyle possible is to select an appropriate, qualified doctor. “It is important to find a physician who you feel comfortable talking with and whose practice style meets your needs,” says Patsy Jensen, Executive Director of Shawnee Health Service. Several critical elements should be taken into consideration anytime you begin searching for a new physician. INSURANCE It may be the case that your choice of doctors will be restricted by your health insurance carrier. It is not uncommon for insurers to maintain contracts with particular groups or professional practices, and you will not be able to venture outside the insurer's provider network without paying extra. The role of a primary care doctor is to see to your medical needs in a global sense, as well as to provide appropriate referrals whenever you require the expertise of a specialist. The physicians comprising an insurer's primary care network will have existing arrangements with the carrier, and using doctors outside the group can subject you to outof-pocket expenses for amounts not covered by your policy. There are, however, some insurance carriers that do not impose restrictions on physician choice. If
you have this type of coverage, you only need look to the local newspaper or print or online directories in order to identify a number of prospects. MEETING YOUR NEEDS It is wise to select a primary care doctor, a physician specializing in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. This doctor’s office should become your “medical home”, where you are known by the physician and his/her staff and where your medical record resides that contains your medical history, a record of your medications, allergies, procedures and hospitalizations. The advantage of choosing a Family Medicine physician is that they care for people of all ages so all members of your family can be taken care of in one location. There are some circumstances when it makes sense to select a doctor practicing within a particular specialty. For instance, a woman may feel most comfortable with an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/ GYN). Parents may prefer to have their child cared for by a pediatrician. Seniors may decide to have a geriatric specialist as their primary care doctor. ASK FOR REFERRALS Ms. Jensen says that perhaps the best way to find a new doctor is through referrals from friends, family and other trusted sources.
“People who like and trust their own physicians are usually eager to share their experiences.” Another useful source of physician referrals may be a “Find a Physician” service provided by your local hospital or other professional organization. You may also want to check with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to make sure the physician you have selected has a current license to practice. They will also be able to tell you whether the physician you have chosen is facing any pending disciplinary actions or complaints. OFFICE POLICIES Not every physician accepts new patients so you should contact the doctor’s office to determine whether they will accept you as a patient and if they accept the insurance you carry. It is wise to check with your insurance company and make sure that your visits to this doctor will be covered. You can also find out what the doctor’s office procedures are for payment. Does the physician’s office bill the insurance company for you? Are you expected to pay up front and wait for the insurance payment? Does the office accept payment by cash, check, debit or credit card? CONVENIENCE A significant factor in choosing
a doctor is convenience. You will want to make sure his or her office is easily accessible from either your home or your workplace and has office hours that work for you. You should ensure that the physician you have chosen has admitting privileges at a hospital where you would feel comfortable in the event you need hospital care. Y ou should ask whether your chosen physician is able to perform diagnostic tests and procedures in his or her own office, or if you will instead have to visit a separate facility when you need such services. Finally, verify how long it typically takes to book an appointment. Not every one of your medical needs will require a same-day office visit, but when an emergency arises, you will want to know your doctor has the ability to meet urgent needs. Are you able to speak with a nurse for general medical advice or to guide you to a decision about whether or not your need an appointment? Finding the right physician for yourself or a family member is very important and worth spending some time and effort to make a choice that works for you. Patsy Jensen Executive Director of Shawnee Health Service, believes you will find a number of excellent physician choices at the Shawnee Community Health Centers in Carbondale, Murphysboro, Carterville and Marion.

How to Choose a Real Estate Agent W
hen it's time to buy or sell a house, working with the right real estate agent can save you time, effort, and money. Conversely, choosing an agent who doesn't keep your best interests at heart can cost you a lot of time and money -- and headaches, too. Do yourself a favor and take the time to find a real estate agent who is perfect for you and your needs. This is one decision you won't regret. So how do you select a good agent? Here are a few tips to keep in mind. Real Estate Agent vs. Realtor First, what's the difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor? A real estate agent may or may not be a Realtor, but every Realtor is required to be a licensed real estate agent. To become a Realtor, a real estate agent has to join the National Association of Realtors (NAR); this allows him or her to attend industry meetings, receive NAR newsletters, and access software and educational tools. Choosing a Realtor gives you the peace of mind of working with
someone who has been trained well, who has solid knowledge of the real estate business, and who is bound by a strict code of ethics. Where to Start Looking One of the best ways to find a good real estate agent or Realtor is through word of mouth. Ask around to see if any family, friends or co-workers can recommend someone. Keep in mind that an agent who is good with buying homes may not be as good for selling home, so be sure to pick someone who is skilled at what you need. If you haven't gathered any suggestions, try contacting local brokers. With any luck, they may be able to connect you with a real estate agent in their office. Or, search the NAR directory online. Whatever route you choose, make sure you find a legitimate agent. Comfort Level When you conduct initial interviews with prospective real estate agents, pay close attention to how you feel while interacting with them. Are they genuinely concerned about your needs? In other words,
are they more interested in your wants and needs than in their own paycheck? Are they knowledgeable about the current housing market? Do they have the ability to negotiate a contract? Overall, how comfortable do you feel with each agent? Are you confident that the agent will work toward your benefit and help you secure a good deal? Do you trust the agent to behave ethically and to fulfill his/her end of the commitment?
cooperation.
More Resources To better equip yourself in buying or selling a home, do some research for yourself instead of relying on your real estate agent to know everything. Real estate magazines may contain good information and can be a great way to start the search for your next home. There are also a lot of good resources on the Internet, such as www.Realtor.com, which is associated with NAR and which contains Communication and Planning free, useful information. Look for a real estate agent who You'll find housing statistics, communicates effectively, both housing market forecasts, buying with you and with the other party and selling tips, and more. How to Choose a Physical Therapist P
hysical Therapy (PT) is NOT pain and torture. Although many injuries and post-surgical conditions by their nature are painful, appropriate Physical Therapy treatments should be designed to relieve symptoms and improve your function to speed your recovery. Physical Therapy treatments often involve effort on the part of the patient, but “no pain, no gain” has very little role in quality Physical Therapy intervention. Physical Therapy is an approach to treatment of joint, muscle, nerve and bone problems that is geared to relieve or eliminate pain, improve range of motion, improve strength, and optimize an individual’s ability to move and function in all aspects of life. Physical Therapy involves a comprehensive evaluation of an individual that includes taking a detailed history of the individual’s problems, goal for treatment, and medical issues. A detailed neuromuscular and functional examination of the individual is then made to determine the cause and best treatment of the problem. Physical Therapy treatments include manual techniques such as joint and soft tissue mobilization, and massage. Therapeutic exercises and activities to improve mo-
tion and strength, relieve pain, and improve function are always an integral part of a Physical Therapy program. Prevention, Posture, and Ergonomic Education will help individuals to improve and maintain the results achieved in treatment. When choosing a good physical therapist, it is important to check with your insurance company to see what requirements they have. You will usually have to pick a therapist that is in-network, rather
than out-of-network. Even with an in-network doctor, insurance companies may still limit the number of visits they are willing to cover. You will want to find a devoted set of Physical Therapist whose main goal is to work with you to retain optimal physical condition. Try to find a practice that will commit you to a devoted therapist that will be available for each visit. This helps create a much more personalized and effective course of treatment.
The most important thing to remember in this situation is that ultimately, YOU are the head of your personal health care team and you have a choice when it comes to selecting the Physical Therapist that best suits your needs. Your doctor will often make a recommendation regarding Physical Therapy, but the decision of where you go is ultimately up to you. HR Physical Therapy – 618-993-4024.

How to Choose an Assisted Living Facility A
t some point in the future, many people will find that living independently at home is no longer an option. When the time comes to look for an assisted living facility for yourself or a loved one, there are many things to take into consideration before making a final decision. Cost is often first on the list of factors when people are looking at facilities. Having a clear understanding of the costs involved in living in a facility is beneficial, but it's not necessarily the most important consideration. While one facility may be allinclusive, another may not be. Facilities may also charge separate fees for special services. A top consideration should also be the quality of care and record of satisfaction from current and former residents and their family members. While making a short list of facilities to visit, be sure to do an online check of the assisted living homes in your area. Many sites will have reviews from family members and residents. Personally visit any facilities that you are considering. Pay close attention to the condition of the buildings, look at the calendar of events and ask about any activities
available for residents. Try to visit when you are most likely to run into residents and their family members. Early evening and weekend days are best. Talk to some of these people and get honest opinions regarding staff, amenities and accommodations. In the first stages of your planning, you may find that your facility need meet only minimal requirements. You or your loved one may need a secure environment or someone on hand in case of a fall or illness. As time goes on, however, these needs may change. Be sure that the facility you are considering can change with your needs. If mobility issues become a concern, the size and layout of the center may become important. Eventually, you may find that you need someone to administer medication, manage your various appointments, provide transportation and provide more personal levels of care. There are assisted living facilities that provide increasing levels of care as the requirements of their residents change. Other facilities meet only a specified level of care and will require that you leave the facility should your needs increase.
Whether it is you or a family member that will become part of the assisted living community, it is important that your experience be a pleasant one. The move will be less stressful for all involved if the facility most closely resembles the lifestyle to which you are accustomed. Make a list of the things in your life that are important to you. Whether it’s gardening or crafting, everyone has a hobby. Look for a facility that will let you continue on with these hobbies once you’ve moved in.
If you enjoy exercise and are physically able to do so, look for a center that has a gym, exercise room or secure place to walk. If you are a social butterfly, look for a facility that allows plenty of opportunity for socializing with others. Moving into an assisted living facility doesn’t have to be stressful or unpleasant. With the proper research, you can ensure that you or your loved one will be well cared for while still being able to enjoy life.
