said Daphne Mitchell, director of the Cosmetology program. “We spend plenty of time learning new, trendy styles and new techniques, but they are definitely a spirited group. They love having a good time, cutting loose a little bit while they work and learn, and you can’t help but enjoy yourself and laugh with them. When you work as hard as our students do, there’s nothing wrong with having some fun.” The Cosmetology program, located at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon, can be completed in just 21 months and results in an occupational certificate. Students practice their skills by working with real clients under the supervision of the instructors. When they graduate, students are prepared to take the Illinois Cosmetologist licensure exam. Six classes are taken: Cosmetology Theory

Along with hair design, this industry offers opportunities in make-up, fashion photography, platform artistry and salon management, among others.” Last year, in response to student demand, an evening cosmetology program was established to accommodate working students. In addition, RLC offers a Cosmetology Teacher program for those interested in classroom instruction. Fall classes at Studio RLC begin Aug. 24. Financial aid is available. 1st Bank & Trust Murphysboro Back in 1889, a group of community leaders decided Murphysboro needed a bank. There were about 3,700 people who called Murphysboro home, a oaf of bread cost about three cents, and that bank evolved nto what today is First Bank and Trust Company, Murphysboro’s only home owned and operated bank. Over the years, First Bank and Trust grew from its opening assets of $69,547.28 to nearly $70 million today. As Murphysboro grew in population. First Bank and Trust was an integral part of the growth, supporting businesses, manufacturing, and agriculture. There were hard imes, too, from a depression, wars, crop failures and the Tri

State Tornado that devastated homes and schools, and the very fabric of life. As the area faced enormous challenges, First Bank and Trust continued honoring its roots in the community. Today, successful projects that foster stability and community spirit are a mainstay of a philosophy of progress. From the Southern Illinois Symphony and Music Festival, Apple Festival, Logan Museum, Relay for Life, church festivals, to scouting, and countless other community events, First Bank and Trust has consistently maintained a position of financial leadership combined with community service. “I believe the success of

Murphysboro is in direct correlation with the success of the bank,” Bank President and CEO Michael Cripps says. “We’ve been here for 120 years; we know everyone and we know their needs. That helps us be in service to our community and meet those needs.” The growth of the area is dependent on the financial support of those who care about its future. First Bank and Trust of Murphysboro, still locally owned and operated for 123 years, will continue to provide the stability those founders pledged, and offering the most modern and advanced banking services. Today, First Bank and Trust offers three locations, includ-

ing one in nearby Carbondale. There are four automatic teller machines available and a new one coming soon on the south side of Carbondale’s University Mall. Making banking convenient, easy and friendly is a hallmark of the way First Bank and Trust operates. “We are proud to be a true community bank,” Cripps adds. “Our customers can come in and talk to the decision makers and the owners. They don’t have to wait on the corporate office somewhere else to make a decision.” Those factors — doing business locally and supporting the programs of Murphysboro and Jackson County — will continue to be at the forefront of First

Bank and Trust in the future. Cripps says it is a very bright future. “I think we have an unlimited future,” he says. “There are things that we can do as we continue to grow to continue to serve our customers and our community.”

TJ's Fine Jewelry From the moment customers walk in the door of TJ’s Fine Jewelry in Carbondale, it is obvious that it is different than other jewelry stores. There’s no high-pressure sales pitch, the people are friendly and the surroundings are comfortable. You feel comfortable and welcome, free to look around and ask questions. “I know it sounds corny,” Martin says, “but the way we treat our customers is different. They’re not just customers, they’re our friends.” To take care of his friends, Martin and the rest of the staff will go out of their way to provide the very best in jewelry. He regularly makes trips to markets in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York to find the latest designs and trends—something that very few jewelers in the area do any more. Plus, the emphasis is not on making the sale, rather TJ’s Fine Jewelry wants to meet customers’ needs. “I love to educate and help customers gain knowledge of the products and earn their trust and business,” Martin explains. “Do not mistake our not being pushy for

not wanting your business. We’re very laid back, but at the same time, we’ll do anything we can to earn your business. The education process not only includes making certain customers understand the products, but also giving them the opportunity to shop other stores. Martin says his years of experience and contacts in the industry helps his store provide the very best jewelry at affordable prices. “We want you to know that you’re getting a good deal. If I can’t win you with quality, price and great service, then I don’t deserve your business,” he says. A long-time Southern Illinois resident, Martin also has a commitment to the region. The store frequently donates to charitable causes and supports local organizations and agencies. Plus, as an independently owned business, not a giant chain store, TJ’s Fine Jewelry is proud to be part of the community. “If you spend your money here, it stays within this community,” Martin says.

Hughes Dental Arts Dr. Christopher Hughes in not your average dentist. His concern is not just about how his patients teeth work, but also about how they look. It’s a concept around which he’s built his entire Herrin practice around. Even the name Hughes Dental Arts Centre reflects it. “I think the name emphasizes the artistic aspects of dentistry,” Dr. Hughes said. “As much as dentistry requires medical science and training, it also requires skills in artistry and aesthetics.” That means that patients not only turn to Dr. Hughes and his staff for routine dental care such as cleanings, filings, extractions and root canals, but also for improving their smiles. “We do cosmetic dentistry. We call it smile makeovers,” he said. Services include teeth whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks or other damaged areas of teeth. Services added in 2012 include Botox and Juvederm injections. Hughes grew up in Herrin and is a graduate of the SIU School of Dental Medicine in Alton. He also has completed advanced

training in aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry. Recently, Dr. Hughes achieved board certification in Implant Dentistry through the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. “We’re the only office in southern Illinois that does complete implant care,” he said. “We do the implant surgery as well as make the crown or denture that fits the implant(s). That makes us unique. In most other settings, you go to one dentist for the surgery and then another for the restoration. We do the entire procedure here without the need for another doctor.” For those patients who are a bit nervous about their trip to the dentist, Hughes also offers intravenous sedation. “We sedate patients intravenously (I.V),” he explained. “It is ideal for patients that want to get dental care done but are too scared to proceed. I.V. makes them feel sleepy, relaxed and less anxious.” Regardless if the care is a routine examination and cleaning or more advanced services, the staff of Hughes Dental Arts Centre focus on helping people look and feel their best.

Known for Ma Ma Chetta’s homemade lasagna and other pasta dishes, Villa Rosa is also gaining a following as one of the few places to find genuine Bonya Calda, a traditional Italian hot dip. “A woman recently told me she was thrilled that we offered it,” Steve Coloni said. “She said she had never seen it on the menu anywhere else.” The dish, like many of the other specialties, comes with generations of Italian cooking and a heritage of fine cuisine. The restaurant also offers pierogies, ravioli, spaghetti and other favorites passed

down from one generation to the next. “Mom and my grandmother always cooked traditional Italian food and our family goes back all the way to the Villarosa area of Sicily. It’s a family tradition,” he said. Diners will also find Villa Rosa to be a great place for other types of food, too. The restaurant is recognized as the home of fantastic mouth-watering steaks and a lunch buffet featuring fabulous Italian and American fare. On Sundays, the buffet includes fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy along with everything else you’d expect. Wednesday’s offerings include pork steaks and there’s often fish on Fridays. Coloni calls the buffet a perfect place for homemade American food. Daily specials, desserts, La Terra Wines and a full children’s menu makes Villa Rosa the perfect place for a family outing or a quiet, candlelit dinner for two.

Murdale True Value Murdale True Value, located on Carbondale’s west side has only one public entrance, but through those doors both professionals and do-it-yourselfers can find almost anything for practically any project. The reason, says Murdale owner George Sheffer, is that the True Value store is more than just a single entity. “We really have four different stores in one,” he says. “That all adds to the value our customers receive in price, service, selection and quality.” Sheffer says Murdale is a complete appliance retailer, a rental company, a hardware store and a full lock shop with locksmiths. He says that the combination of the four “stores” give Murdale True Value a different approach to serving customers. “If you are wanting to complete practically any project, here you can get the expertise to make your job easier along with the products and equipment you’ll need to do the job,” he explains. Sheffer offers the example of a homeowner who wants to paint his home. “A lot of places will sell you paint, but what people really need to know is that the job is not just about paint,” he adds. “It goes back to the knowledge of how to do the whole job the right way. The preparation of the surface is key. It means using the right products and the right applicators, too.” To make the task even easier, Murdale’s rental department offers everything from paint sprayers to motorized lifts. Beyond painting and staining, the same level of service, expertise and easy-to-use tools are available for a countless number of projects. “We add value for our customers by helping them get the end results they want,” Shef-

fer explains. “People need to understand that the true cost of a project can only be calculated when the project is all said and done.. That’s what sets us apart. We can help from start to finish. With us, the project is safe, easy and done.” He explained that the philosophy of Murdale True Value is to make things easier for the customer, not for themselves. “No matter what area or what type of project it is, if you go to other places you’ll see that they do one thing: what they think is easiest for them. For example, when it comes to selling things like nuts and bolts or nails, they want to put them into packages because it is the most convenient way for them to ring them up and keep track of how many they sell. But is it easier for the

customer?” Sheffer points out that customers can try nuts on to a bolt they bring in to the store to make sure they get the correct size instead of having to guess that the nuts in a package will fit. Also, Murdale will sell any number of many fasteners and other hardware items. “If you want to buy just one or two, you can buy just one or two instead of a dozen or more,” he said. “Buy whatever you need. We’re not forcing you into a package. It’s more of a customer-delight focus rather than just meeting their needs. It goes way beyond that in a nice way.” Customer service is plentiful in every department of Murdale True Value. The store boasts the largest selection of Weber grills and grilling accessories in

southern Illinois. “We feel that we are dominant in the grill business,” he says. “We have expertise that most places do not have in getting the most from your grill. Plus we’re a Weber warranty service center, so we can repair grills should they ever need it.” The same goes for appliances. Murdale has a vast selection of major home appliances. “We offer aggressive pricing on appliances, but our advantages don’t end there. We don’t have all of the other hidden fees that many other stores have.” Murdale does not charge for delivery or limit delivery just to the curb. “We do standard installation completely free,” Sheffer says. “We’ll come, put in the new unit, take the old one away if

you wish and do an environmentally-friendly disposal of it. We’ve done that for years and it’s just a service we do to take care of our customers.” Recently Sheffer heard from a customer who asked a Murdale team member in appliances for advice in connecting a refrigerator’s ice maker. The customer told Sheffer that the associate not only educated him on how to do it, he went with the customer to the plumbing department to make sure he got all of the correct fittings and tools for the job. “You come get the products you need, so however you want to do a project, we can help you. We have the expertise and the equipment to do it,” Sheffer says. Everyone at Murdale True Value is proud of the way they treat their customers, but they are also proud of their communities. The store frequently supports local charitable and civic organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale. Recently, Murdale was designated as one of the top five “Youth Friendly Businesses” in Jackson County by the Jackson County Positive Youth Development Coalition. “We try to be very involved in the community. We care about our community,” Sheffer explains. “We live here, we work here and we play here. This is not a stepping stone to somewhere else for us. Our kids go to school here, we plan on retiring here. That’s why we try to put a lot back into the community. We try to help out organizations and we’ll even put on fun days so the kids can come here and play for free. It’s all about giving back to the community.”

Sterling Mattress

Owned by Mike and Treena Wicoff, Sterling Mattress Factory in Herrin, creates handcrafted mattress sets, Memory Foam sets, adjustable beds, lift chairs, custom-size mattresses, headboards, and accessories – everything for a comfortable nights sleep. “The handcraftsmanship of our mattresses sets them apart from mass-produced products and provides ‘old-fashioned’ value that our customers can’t see, but it’s there,” Mike said. “For example, instead of using the standard one-andhalf pound foam, we use two to five pound. It’s a difference you really can’t see, but it raises the quality of our mattresses. Mostly it greatly decreases body impressions; and our customers love that!” Mike said that the biggest trend today is the no-flip mattress. Sterling however, offers both the newer no-flip and the traditional two-sided mattresses, so customers can have their choice. Their goal is the find a match for the customer, no matter what style of mattress it may be. Sterling mattresses are all in stock and ready to go, with custom orders usually take 2-10 days; most less than a week.

Sterling Mattress Factory cuts out the retail store part of the equation and sells direct from the factory to you. More than 26,000 satisfied customers from across Southern Illinois are testimony to the store’s success. “We can produce a quality hand-crafted mattress for about the same price or less than a mass-producing product, Mike said. “Yet, we put in the extra value that others don’t.” In addition to having competitive prices, the friendly and knowledgeable “Sleep Factory” staff makes the both shopping and delivery experience a pleasure. Master craftsman Brian Wicoff is the production manager and keeps the operation running smoothly and efficiently to ensure quality and on-time delivery. “Professional Sleep Expert” Bryan Shroeder not only crafts the mattresses, but also sells them. Rounding out the craftsmen staff at Sterling Mattress Factory is Joe Colvin. Wicoff says, “We’re dedicated to giving the people of Southern Illinois a good night’s sleep.”

Grumpy's Smokehouse

By the looks on the faces of people enjoying their meals, you wouldn’t believe that the name of the restaurant is Grumpy’s, but it is. In fact, Grumpy’s Smokehouse, is quickly becoming a Southern Illinois favorite. While there’s really no story behind the Grumpy’s name, there is a story behind the great tasting food at the restaurant, especially the barbecue, says co-owner Jenny Harris, who explains her husband (and restaurant co-owner) Mike has always had a passion for cooking great barbecue. “He really started doing it as a hobby, smoking pork” she recalls. “Everyone always told him how good it was and he always wanted to have his own restaurant. His enjoyment of cooking and feeding people is what brought him to this.” Today, there’s something fresh on the smoker every day. The restaurant is already known for its ribs, but barbecue pork shoulder and butts also have devotees. The brisket sandwich is big in size and in taste. “Everybody talks about that brisket sandwich,” she adds. “Barbecue is our

specialty.” There’s pork, turkey and chicken being smoked, too, but Grumpy’s is more than just great barbecue. The restaurant has a full menu—including breakfast featuring a traditional Southern Illinois favorite: biscuits and gravy. There’s an array of sandwiches, fresh fried catfish, salads and plenty of appetizers to choose from as well. All of it is prepared to order from the freshest ingredients. “Everything is homemade,” Harris says. Grumpy’s features a convenient drivethrough with family packs and barbecue and smoked items available in bulk, plus they also offer catering, from casual to elegant. “We can do as little or as much as our catering customers like. Our job is to make their job easier,” she says. The catering menu features everything from hors d’oeuvres to salads and light lunches to buffet as served meals, including options of pasta, barbecue and smoked items and even prime rib. Regardless of your tastes and whether it’s dine-in, carry-out or catered, go into Grumpy’s and leave happy.

First Southern Bank From humble beginnings in 2002 when four respected Southern Illinois bankers — John Dosier, Kevin Klaine, Stephen Schauwecker and Patricia Shay later joined by Greg Ingram and Mike Robison — with more than 70 Southern Illinois investors purchased the former Shawnee State Bank, First Southern Bank has become a banking leader in the region is a very short time. As First Southern Bank celebrates its tenth anniversary Locally Owned asked bank President and CEO John Dosier about the last decade. Q: How has First Southern Bank grown in the last ten years? Dosier: When we started we were the smallest bank

in the county with $18 million in deposits. Our total staff was made up of 13 people. Today, we have 48 employees and $210 million in deposits. We now are the largest bank in Carbondale and the county in terms of deposits. We also are one of the top producers of mortgage loans in Jackson County. Q: What does that growth say about First Southern Bank? Dosier: We never could have grown without our customers and the support they’ve given us. We are extremely pleased with the confidence our customers have had in us over these 10 years and with the growth that we’ve been able to achieve with their support. Q: Growth like that

must mean that the bank does things differently. What makes First Southern Bank special? Dosier: I think people enjoy banking with First Southern Bank. They like the relationships they have with our employees and the high level of personal customer service. We like to know customers by their first names; they are not just a number. We like to treat people the way that they want to be treated, taking the time to ask how they are. We also try to be very active in our communities, in civic and charitable organizations; not just by committing dollars, but with our time and efforts, as well. We want to be involved in these communities because this is where we live, too.

Q: Speaking of communities, what communities are served by First Southern Bank? Dosier: We serve customers from all over Southern Illinois with four convenient locations: two in Carbondale with both our main office downtown and our branch on the west side, as well as branches in Murphysboro and Grand Tower. In fact, our location in Grand Tower has been a bank since 1905. We’re proud of that. Q: Do you help in other ways? Dosier: We take pride in our ability to lend money. We have a very experienced staff of lenders that have been around Southern Illinois for most of their careers. They understand

the banking needs of local consumers and businesses and we feel like they provide excellent customer service. Being a community bank we also are able to make all of our decisions locally. Q: Things have changed since then, haven’t they? Dosier: We keep pace with all of the updates to banking technology, products and services. We are able to provide our customers with current technology such as online banking and mobile banking. At First Southern Bank we are pleased to offer a combination of technology and great personal customer service.

Southern Gas Co.

PROPANE FUEL IS...

“Propane is a clean burning fuel,” explains Carol Eaton Brandenburg, President of Southern Gas. With talk of alternative energy, it’s easy to overlook a common economical and reliable fuel source like propane. For home energy and vehicle fuel, propane is the green choice. Propane is used for refrigerators, cook tops, ovens and ranges, water heaters, furnaces, space heaters, gas logs, and generators. Propane can be used in outdoor applications as well, including fire pits, grills, pool heaters and yard lighting. These propane appliances allow consumers to protect themselves from power outages because many propane appliances don’t require electricity to work. A propane generator can be sized to supply power to an entire house or just essential appliances. “Now is a great time to invest in new propane appliances.” says Carol. “The Illinois Propane Gas Association offers rebates of up to $450 for qualifying appliances. We also carry a variety of tank sizes" she said “including underground

tanks if you don’t want a tank visible in the yard”. Since 1953, Southern Gas Company of Carbondale has taken pride in offering competitive prices, safe installations and a dependable supply. Southern Gas only sells quality HD5 propane. Because of our dedicated employees, Southern Gas customers can rest assured that WHEN YOU NEED GAS, THEY WILL DELIVER! Why should you choose Southern Gas of Carbondale? One reason is that if you call Southern Gas during business hours, you’ll speak to a live person in the Carbondale office, "not voice mail," says Carol. "We are a local company that cares about and respects our customers," she said. "Some companies offer bargain prices, but fail to deliver when you need it most," she said. Some have been known to jack the prices up when the weather outside is frightful. Carol promises "fair year-round pricing, not a really low price in the summer when you aren’t using gas and then a super higher one in winter, when you need heat."

Clean. Efficient. Green.

Propane is the GREEN ENERGY CHOICE

• Propane burns cleaner than coal, heating oil, or gasoline. • Propane is non-toxic and emits fewer lifecycle green house gases than gasoline or diesel fuel. • Propane water heaters heat water twice as fast as electric. • Propane cook tops allow instant temperature control. • Propane space heaters and gas logs provide excellent emergency heat because they do not require electricity to run. • Illinois Propane Gas Association rebates also available up to $450.

Why Choose Us? Local • Safe and Dependable • Competitive Prices Flexible Payment Options

Funky Rocks Jewelry Many women are always looking for just the right piece of jewelry: one that makes a statement; one that is unique and beautiful; one that is, well, funky. Those women will find just what they’re looking for from Funky Rocks Jewelry. Available through Amazon Salon in Herrin or by appointment, Funky Rocks Jewelry offers one-of-a-kind jewelry. “It’s all very cool, affordable, bold and unique,” says owner Natalie Murry. “People will automatically be drawn to something.” Murry started Funky Rocks Jewelry after working as a stylist and nail technician. Her customers always talked about trying to find the latest in styles and looks. With Funky Rocks Jewelry, she’s helping them. “I wanted to bring sterling silver and natural stone jewelry to people,” she says. Today she offers a variety of stones, including some not usually found in Southern Illinois. Her inventory includes turquoise, natural ruby, emeralds, sapphires, Italian glass, leatherwork bracelets and more. “A lot of people haven’t seen some of

these stones before. It’s all very different, but you can wear it anywhere. Whether with a nice dress or just with jeans and a shirt, you can do both,” she says. Much of the selection at Funky Rocks Jewelry defies description. Using her experience, Murry has a knack for finding jewelry that women will gravitate to and pieces that will be conversation starters for years to come. Yet, it all is very affordable. “I have some rings, for example that are just $25,” she explains. “Some of the bigger necklaces are around $200, but that’s still very affordable, especially compared to retail jewelry. I want everyone to have nice, original jewelry that will last a long, long time.” Murry currently sells Funky Rocks Jewelry through the salon, fundraisers, craft fairs and by appointment, but she adds that a website is coming soon. “People ask what kind of jewelry I have,” she says. “I have to tell them you have to see it; it’s all different kind of stuff. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything like it in the area.”

For 18 years owner Wes Ellet and the staff at Wesley’s Custom Graphics have been helping businesses get their message across through a variety of means. “We’re a full-service, one-stop advertising company,” Ellet explains. In fact, everything—design, printing, application and even repairs—is done in-house by Wesley’s. “We do logos and business cards to marquee signage, yard signs and more. We do almost everything except billboards.” Well, they do something sort of like billboards. Wesley’s is the area’s top designer and provider of custom vehicle wraps that can convert any vehicle—big or small—into a rolling advertisement.

“The custom vehicle wraps are our biggest seller right now,” he says. A custom wrap for a van can typically runs in the $2,200 range, and they’ll last for about five years.“ Even if you look at it just over three or four years, it’s still an investment of about $50 a month. You get a lot of viewers with it and you’re almost always with your sign or ad. It draws attention and makes you stand out from your competition. It draws people to your vehicle and what you’re trying to sell. That’s what it’s all about.” He says that many of his customers have told him of sales made as a direct result of a custom wrap. “We have a blast wrapping cars, but we do way more than that,” Ellet adds. “Our customers are friends and they become our friends because we take good care of them. I like to see business owners not only smiling because of the quality of work, but because they know they’ll see a great return on their investment.”

Appliance Wizard Finding the perfect home appliance and keeping everything from refrigerators and dishwashers to ovens and laundry units running perfectly is not something that requires a magic touch, but it certainly is easier with a wizard—The Appliance Wizard of Marion, that is. Since 2005, The Appliance Wizard in Marion has been a one-stop shop for home appliance needs of all types, including both new and refurbished units, as well as repair, and a giant selection of parts for the do-it-yourselfers. “We give you the opportunity to save your appliances,” Patti Dawson of The Appliance Wizard says. “It can be expensive to replace major appliances; our technicians are there when you need us.” Dawson says technicians will travel throughout most of Southern Illinois and not only does The Appliance Wizard service what they sell, they also work on all major brands, often making same-day repairs. “We provide fast and friendly service and provide the community with a great product at a great price,” she explains.

For those looking for new appliances for their homes, The Appliance Wizard recently added a full line of GE appliances and Blomberg dishwashers as well as Speed Queen brand washers and dryers. All new appliances come with a ten year major component warranty. There’s also an extensive selection of refurbished appliances available, all backed by extensive warranties. “Refurbished appliances are popular because of the cost factor,” she says. “If you’re not able to spend as much, but still looking for quality, the refurbished appliances can be a great option.” The selection is just another way The Appliance Wizard strives to serve clients and customers. “We’re most proud of the way we have adjusted and made changes in our business to fit the needs of our customers,” Dawson says. “We’ve changed our product line to offer more, created even better deals and worked hard to service customers and the community in the most efficient way we possibly can.”

LOCALLY OWNED

Baker's Group of America Losing weight can be difficult. In a world filled with diet plans and gimmick programs, it’s nice to find someone you can trust, a place with a medically-proven method to assist you in safely losing weight and keeping it off. Such a place can be found right here: SI Medical Weight Loss, with locations in Marion and Belleville. “We’re a medical clinic that specializes in weight loss,” explains Tracy Askari, one of the founding partners of the clinic. “That’s all we deal with; only weight loss.” Through counseling and personal attention, the professional staff at SI Medical Weight Loss Clinic creates a weight loss plan specifically for each client that utilizes a clinically-proven diet, a recommended exercise program, a pharmaceutical appetite suppressant as well as fat-burning medications. “Our main approach is changing diet and eating habits while adding exercise,” explains Dr. Griffin of the clinic. “It is different for every individual.” The goal of the program is to assist clients in reaching their target weight goal during what is called the active phase of the treatment, before helping clients learn to keep the weight off during the transition and maintenance portions of the program. More than 2000 frustrated dieters have turned to the clinic. Askari says practically all of them are satisfied with the results they have seen. “It’s very inspiring,” she says. “This has been the most fun job I’ve ever had. It’s so positive and I love seeing people come in the door and they’re just beaming.” The program is very affordable, with monthly visits just under $90. The fee includes visits with a doctor or nurse

practitioner as well consultation with a dietician and any prescribed injections, medications are an additional cost. “Sometimes we used medications such as appetite suppressants to help control cravings,” Dr. Griffin adds. “That helps give a better start and helps clients lose weight at first. That gives more motivation to keep going and once you change eating habits, you don’t need those anymore because cravings are controlled by the way you eat and what you are eating.” He adds that vitamin B-12 often is used to boost both energy and metabolism. The goal, Dr. Griffin adds, is for clients to lose weight safely. “As with any weight loss program people lose more weight at the beginning, but we like to see three to 10 or 12 pounds lost in a month’s time. We don’t want it to be too fast, because that can

mean a person is losing muscle. Our goal is to preserve the muscle and loose the fat.” He says that the staff at the clinic keeps a close eye on not only a client’s weight loss, but other factors including body mass index. Medical professionals and a registered dietician monitors every step of the program and meet with each client every month. “That makes us different from a lot of the so-called weight loss clinics,” Don Baker, co-owner explains. “Many of them are not medically supervised or do not involve dieticians; they’re more what we call pill mills. Bottom line is that they really are not helping people change their lifestyles so they lose weight and lose it correctly.” We were so fortunate to find the right medical professionals – Dr. Donald Griffin, Lito Tacedaras, APN, Sharon Ball, APN and

Brian Carrol, MS, RD, LDN were all key in developing the program. It is so exciting to see client’s expressions when they come in and have lost – we have a brass bell that they can ring when they have lost since their last weigh-in. Everyone has an off week here and there – we focus on next week. From their very first appointment, clients will see a difference with SI Medical Weigh Loss Clinic. A complete medical history is taken from every client and blood chemistry laboratory tests aid in finding the perfect weight loss program. After a consultation with a dietician, analysis of vital statistics as well as weight and body mass and the health history, Dr. Griffin or a nurse practitioner will prescribe an appropriate medication for appetite suppression. Clients will also receive detailed instructions on what (and how much) to eat as well as plans for an exercise program. With monthly follow-ups to review progress and provide support, encouragement and motivation, the program works. “As long as people keep coming and keep doing the program, they will be successful, but it’s not a magic overnight thing; it’s diet and exercise and the medications all working together,” Dr. Griffin adds. Speaking of the medications, SI Medical Weight Loss Clinic makes certain the suppressants they prescribe are safe. “We are really careful about getting research on all of the medications,” Dr. Griffin says. “The ones we use have been extensively studies and proven safe. They all come from American manufacturers with written guarantees of ingredients. They come to us straight

from the manufacturer within 48 hours of production.”These have been used for years and years and are readily available,” she adds. “They are held up to the standards of the FDA and other governmental agencies.” Si Medical Weight Loss believes that helping patients safely lose weight is the only way to lose weight. In fact, it’s one of their guiding values, along with honesty and integrity, adherence to ethical and moral standards and to innovation in weight loss through science and experience. It’s a proven plan that works, not a fad diet. “It’s a do-able diet,” Askari says. “It’s eating out of your kitchen. The program doesn’t mean you can’t have a small piece of cake or a glass of wine. You can still be social and still go out to dinner. We know you have to live a real life.” She says clients can eat salmon, steaks and even baked potatoes and still lose weight. “You’re not going to be deprived,” she says. “It’s not a diet of bars, shakes and supplements; it’s real food.” And it works. After just over a year, many patients have lost nearly 100 pounds thanks to SI Medical Weight Loss Clinic. “There are a lot of success stories,” she says. Paul Smith, also one of the founding members and coowners responded “I am so thrilled at the success of the clinic. We saw a need in our community for these services and the people of Southern Illinois have responded very well. We will continue to look for ways to help the overall health and well being of the community”
