The

Rabbit Patch

For more than 20 years, The Rabbit Patch Cottage has been one of southern Illinois’ favorite and most unique shops. “We specialize in country décor as well as florals, candles, lighting accessories, quilts, signs and much, much more,” said owner Melissa Harper. She said the old and new “primitive” furniture is a specialty of the store. They can take most pieces of old furniture, add a little paint and TLC, and create a new piece for your country home, without breaking the bank! “We offer a lot of “new” primitive furniture in your choices of colors as well as styles. We also do a lot of custom pieces, just bring in your measurements.” The store offers everything from entertainment centers to tables and chairs, all with the loved and worn look. “Everything has that country feel,” she added. You’ll find an outstanding selection of braided rugs, candles and melts, Gooseberry Patch cookbooks, lamps, pictures, shelving and tart burners. When you shop at The Rabbit Patch, you instantly become one of their family and you’ll notice the care and concern Melissa and her staff take in making sure you find exactly what you want.

Hughes Dental Arts Centre Dr. Christopher Hughes in not your average dentist. His concern is not just about how his patients teeth work, but also about how they look. It’s a concept around which he’s built his entire Herrin practice around. Even the name Hughes Dental Arts Centre reflects it. “I think the name emphasizes the artistic aspects of dentistry,” Dr. Hughes said. “As much as dentistry requires medical science and training, it also requires skills in artistry and aesthetics.” That means that patients not only turn to Dr. Hughes and his staff for routine dental care such as cleanings, filings, extractions and root canals, but also for improving their smiles. “We do cosmetic dentistry. We call it smile makeovers,” he said. Services include teeth whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks or other damaged areas of teeth. Hughes grew up in Herrin and is a graduate of the SIU School of Dental Medicine in Alton. He also has completed advanced training in aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry and implant dentistry.

“We’re the only office in southern Illinois that does complete implant care,” he said. “We do the implant surgery as well as make the crown or denture that fits the implant(s). That makes us unique. In most other settings, you go to one dentist for the surgery and then another for the restoration. We do the entire procedure here without an outside referral.” For those patients who are a bit nervous about their trip to the dentist, Hughes also offers intravenous sedation. “We administer a sedative through an IV,” he explained. “It is ideal for patients that want to get dental care done but are fearful. It makes them feel sleepy, relaxed and less anxious.” Regardless if the care is a routine examination and cleaning or more advanced services, the staff of Hughes Dental Arts Centre focus on helping people look and feel their best. “We want people to feel good about their smiles, because that impacts how they feel about themselves and ultimately has an influence on their lifestyle and their confidence.”

In today’s day and age it is rare to know where any product you purchase is made. Even more rare is knowing who created the item. However, that’s not the case at Country Crafted Furniture in Mount Vernon. For more than 20 years, owner Richard Strite and the staff at Country Crafted Furniture have been selling Amish-made furniture, most of which is made in Illinois. Every piece is signed by the craftsman who made it. “The builder put his name right on the back or the bottom of the furniture. They’re willing to sign their names to it, so their own personal reputation is built right into the furniture,” Strite said. Buyers won’t find pressed wood or particle board in the pieces offered by Country Crafted Furniture. Strite said that the store’s history has shown there is real satisfaction in owning quality-made furniture, especially when compared to the frustration of dealing with cheaplymade import products. “I always tell customers that this type of furniture is an investment. It will hold its value or even increase in value,” Strite said. “This is furniture that will last and

is the type of thing that customers will want to pass along to their children.” Each piece of furniture comes with a lifetime warranty. Strite said furniture can be made from a variety of woods and with a number of different stain finishes, so customers can match their existing home décor. They even can build custom furniture from customer’s ideas, photos and plans. “With our many options, you can have your furniture built just the way you would like it,” he said.

A-1 Buildings A 1 Buildings have been in business for over 20 years, and build approximately 100 buildings a year. That is a lot of crews and coordination, but it is a labor of love, say the owners David and Leslie Andrews. Each building requires a rolled metal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to find a reliable source for metal that was near by. That was not a hurdle for this innovative couple. The simple solution was to manufacture the panels themselves, so in February of 2009, Heartland Metal Sales was started and the company grew even more. “With thirty years in the post-frame building industry, it was a natural decision for us to offer these metal services as well,” Leslie Andrews said.

Locally Owned Business

“We know what kind of quality is needed to build a good building and how to make it look good and how to get the job done quickly and on time.” Heartland Metal Sales produces a variety of metal panels for buildings, roofs, commercial buildings, farm structures and carports. The company can provide metal for commercial, residential and agricultural application and complete accessory trim components. “We also offer Energy-Star qualified metal sheeting for building. This provides a tax incentive as well as energy savings that can help reduce costs.” she said. Andrews said that the company offers

nearly 20 colors of metal, all produced to specifications given by the customer. Any length is available and with the wide variety of colors, we can work with our customers to make the buildings fit in with their existing homes. “Our customers have been pleased that we take the time to work with them and find out what their needs are. Our building knowledge, coupled with the fact we can manufacture on site, gives us the perfect product for them. Quality, looks and an affordable price. It seems to be working. We’ve been at it now for over 20 years and we have a great crew.” She said. Even as a new company, Heartland Metals holds true to the same philosophy that customers of A-1 Buildings have

come to appreciate – high quality products and an excellent reputation. “People deal with us because of our honesty,” David Andrews said. “We work hard to make sure our customers get the kind of job delivered we would want.” Heartland Metals and A-1 Buildings serve about a 150 mile radius and include portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky. They can be reached at their factory in Pittsburg, Illinois at 618983-5909 or 618-983-8600. www.heartlandmetalsales.com website or email us at heartlandmetalsales@mychoice.net.

The goal, Bacher says, is to educate the public. “That way, you can make an informed decision on what you would like to purchase, rather than being sold a product which may not fit your desires or needs.” As a fine jeweler, the store offers original productions and repairs on-site.

J. Bacher Fine Jewelry has a history of bringing some of the finest products available to the region. “We work closely with small manufactures to enable unique styling and fine detail with lower overhead,” Bacher says. Southern Illinois Paint Supply There’s nothing that the staff of Southern Illinois Paint Supply likes to hear more than satisfied customers who come back to thank them for their help, with a proud, “It looks great!” And it’s something they hear regularly. As the area’s premier source for everything needed for any painting, staining or coating project, Southern Illinois Paint Supply has the name-brand paints and accessories along with expert advice. “No matter how large or small your painting project, we have the right product at the best price around,” says Paul Deuel, manager of Southern Illinois Paint Supply. The company, located on Reed Station Road east of Carbondale, originally opened in 2007 as Southern Illinois Wholesale Paint Supply, supplying Glidden paint, interior and exterior coatings as well as a full line of painting sundries to both commercial and retail customers. “Since then we have dropped the ‘wholesale’ portion of the name to clarify our retail presence. Customers can buy quarts, gallons and five-gallon

quantities, and we’ve expanded our product line to include Pittsburgh Paints,” Deuel said. More than paint, Southern Illinois Paint Supply also offers commercial coatings, Wood Pride stains and concrete coatings. They even offer parts and service for spray pumps. The professionals at Southern Illinois Paint Supply can help you in picking out the perfect colors for your job. Plus, if you need to match an existing wall or some feature in your home, they offer computer color-matching to give you an infinite choice of colors. Additionally, when you have questions about any aspect of the painting process – from prep work to choosing the right kind of paint and how to clean up – the experts at Southern Illinois Paint Supply are there to help with professional and experienced expertise. “As a locally-owned business, we take pride in the service and products we offer,” Deuel adds. “A coat of paint can make all the difference in brightening up a personal space. Our goal is to see your project through from the beginning to the successful end.”

Mr. Tuxedo & Bridal For years, gentlemen have turned to Mr. Tuxedo to look their best for weddings, proms or special occasions. But did you know that Mr. Tuxedo is actually Mr. Tuxedo and Bridal? Yes, the Carterville store is the perfect place to rent a tuxedo. They offer on-site alterations to make sure tuxedos fit perfectly and even offer in-stock basic black tuxedo rentals, so there’s no worries about formal wear arriving in time from out of town. But it is also the perfect place for women’s formal wear as well. Mr. Tuxedo and Bridal carries a complete line of wedding gowns, prom gowns and special-occasion dresses available for purchase. They offer a variety of veils and headpieces. “We’re a full-blown bridal shop with gowns and headpieces with more than 4,000 square feet,” Teresa Hubbs, owner, adds. With more than 20 years of experience in formal wear, Hobbs personally works with each customer to make sure they get the style, look and fit they desire. She also keeps a keen eye on the latest trends for weddings and dances, making certain

Page 12 Thursday, June 23, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan

that Mr. Tuxedo has all of the latest styles. “Short gowns look like they’re going to be very popular for the homecoming dances this fall,” she explains. “We have a large selection of the short gowns in stock now.” She adds that the store also stocks fulllength long gowns for formal events in a variety of styles, colors and price ranges. Many designer lines at Mr. Tuxedo and Bridal cannot be found at any other Southern Illinois retailer. The store also offers many one-of-a-kind gowns and items. Hubbs says that unlike in years past when fashion trend dictated the look for weddings and formal occasions, looks today are more likely to reflect personal tastes and preferences. “Everybody’s more into what they personally like instead of what everybody else is doing,” she says. “Everybody now seems to be doing their own thing, and we can cater to that.” Mr. Tuxedo and Bridal is located just off Route 13, east of Carterville.

Fifth Season Residential The Fifth Season Assisted Living homes in Benton and Marion offer private and individual living experiences that come with a promise: to provide assisted living at its finest. Locally owned, and operated, Fifth Season Living offers an assisted living community that truly feels like home, but includes such things as medication and around-the-clock security. The facility design and unique personal lifestyle programs are intended to instill a feeling of self-worth and value to residents. Specifically, the programming aims to offer quality of life while slowing the aging process. Alzheimer’s care, exercise, interactive music therapy, beauty salon services, mental stimulation and socialization all combine to create a complete experience. Fifth Season offers services to those residents who need limited assistance with the daily living activities through 24-hour staffing, while encouraging all residents to remain as independent as possible.

“At Fifth Season, our residents judge their experience by the way they are treated as a person,” Robert Bradley, owner, says. “We believe the most important thing we do is hire and retain cheerful, kind and empathetic people, who by the nature of who they are, go above and beyond to create a truly wonderful living experience for all of our residents, regardless of their decline with aging. Our staff focuses on what our residents can do, rather than what they cannot. We believe that in spite of aging, an older adult still has a world to experience...and we are there to support them.” Those caring and compassionate staff members provide residents with the assistance they need for daily living including help with personal care, dressing or bathing. Additionally, the facility offers comfortable and modern studio apartments and deluxe suites; both with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, utilities and cable television, housekeeping and laundry

services as well as fire alarms and sprinkler systems and an individual emergency call system. Other amenities include activities and community events, as well as three meals served each day in a pleasant social setting. “We have designed residences that serve Senior Citizens in a beautiful, friendly environment. Our focus is to respect each resident's right to make choices, and to value each resident as one would a family member,” Bradley says. “We provide a safe, well maintained environment, beautiful surroundings and 24-hour assistance. Our services allow each resident to maintain a dignified lifestyle that is pleasant and worry-free.” Bradley adds that Fifth Season stresses community. “We truly believe that Fifth Season is very special. It's not just a place for your loved one to stay when they can no longer live alone, but a place to live, laugh, enjoy life, make new friends, and be loved when you cannot be with them. It is truly

a place to call home.” Fifth Season Assisted Living offers three locations: one in Benton and two in Marion. More information about Fifth Season is available online at www.fifthseasonassistedliving.com.

Whimsey Photography Nichole Smelter, owner of Whimsey Photography had 11 years of experience as a photographer and trainer before opening her own shop in July of 2009. Since then they have been growing rapidly and having a great time sharing moments with people. “I’m proud of the growth the studio has had in the first few years, we have already doubled appointments from our first year! Most of our new appointments have come from happy client referrals” Smelter feels that her biggest strength is that she has been working with children and families for over 13 years. “That experience helps us tailor your appointment with our clients’ personal needs and wants. I am unique in the fact that I am a mom so I approach each session as that” She says each family isn’t picture perfect; children don’t always cooperate and babies need to be fed so we capture you as you are in a fun and relaxed session. Whimsey is offering a new line of jewelry and photographic display products. Some of our best specials are our mini sessions offered 4 to 5 times per year usually around a seasonal setting

Ralphs Small Engine, A Cut Above the Rest Ralph's Small Engine in Elkville stands as one of the regions largest lawn-care equipment dealerships. Since 1995, own¬ers Ralph and Joann Millers have seen tremendous business growth. How did they do it? Simple. Sell quality products, give the customers "over the top" service, and give great value. Ralph Miller started a repair and parts shop in 1993 and just seven years ago, expanded to sell new mowers. The first summer, he sold approximately 30 Hustler mowers. His effort has earned him the Rising Star Award from Hustler, given to dealers who show tremendous growth in sales of Hustler products. After talking to Ralph for just a couple of minutes, you will find out why he is successful. No hard sales pitch, just his honest assessment and knowledge of the products he sells. He will work hard to find you the right mower to fit your needs. Whether it is a Hustler, Toro, Gravely, Ariens, Lawn Boy or Echo you are looking for, Ralph's Small Engine has the knowledge and products you need.

Ralph grew up around Elkville and said that Southern Illinois has always been his home, and starting a business here was the only option he'd consider. He said he opened the business because he felt there was a need for a dealer in the area who specifically dealt with equipment and service. While many other stores sold mowers and chainsaws, there was no service or repair included. And for those reasons, customers, pass up the Big Box stores and travel to their humble shop on Highway 51 one mile south of Elkville. Both Ralph and Joann are experts on the brands they carry: Hustler, Toro, Echo and Gravely. They have a wide, selection of commercial and personal lawn mowers, lawn tractors and zero-turn mowers along with accessories. Add lawn trimmers, edger's, chain saws and a top-notch service department and you can see why Ralph's Small Engine Repair is your complete one-stop shop for keeping your yard immaculate.

Eliminate your dependency on electricity. Propane can be used for refrigerators, cooktops, ovens, ranges, water heaters, furnaces, space heaters, gas logs, and generators. Propane can also be used in numerous outdoor applications. They have a variety of tank

says owner Melise Smith. Inventory at Melise’s changes constantly, offering something new to customers every time they come to the store. Plus the jewelry selection is being expanded. Glass by JenRuss The store opened in November, 2009, mainly selling engraved glass items, and did surprisingly well for a brand new business opening at an odd time of year and in a downturned economy. During the postChristmas slump, however, I needed something else to work on; glass engraving is a messy business and can't be done at the store. I remembered that I had some glass beads, and decided to make jewelry. I think the biggest strength of the business is the flexibility I offer. There are glass items that I have already engraved, and items and designs for a customer to

choose from. Also, I can engrave glass that is brought in and I can help someone design their own. There are lots of beads and colors to choose from. I'm most proud of the support my family has given me, especially the husband who puts up with the frequent bouts of singlemindedness while I try to plan something. My granddaughters wear the jewelry, make the web page and Facebook page, help clean the store, and sometimes run the place if I have to be away.

Omaha Furniture Unofficially, the address for Omaha Furniture is most of main street in tiny little Omaha. The huge super store, however, does not really need an address because the 52,000 square-feet of furniture and accessories take up practically all of both sides of the village’s streets. The store offers the latest in furniture and accessories from companies including Ashley, Best Home Furnishings, Eagle Industries, Lane, Powell and Sealy, complemented by free delivery up to 100 miles and personal service. In fact, decades after H. C. Williams first opened a small appliance store in 1932, business is still done the same way, with value, service and trust. “For three generations, Omaha Furniture has been located in Southern Illinois,” President Karen Williams said. “With no corporate ties, our store has been proudly supporting the local economy for more than 79 years. We’re still family owned and proudly serving the tri-state area.” Of course, the business (and the showroom) has grown over the years,

going through several remodels and expansions to keep up with the latest designs and tastes of homeowners. All the additional space means customers get a larger selection of furniture from which to choose. “With an ever-changing furniture lineup, Omaha Furniture is working hard to keep up with America’s furniture trends,” Williams added. The goal of Omaha Furniture is to help you furnish your home with the furniture that best suit your wants, needs and sense of style. The retail industry is changing and we understand all customers want to be informed consumers. That’s why the Williams family invites you to visit the store, try out furniture you like and ask lots of questions. You’re certain to get answers and find the perfect furnishings for your home.

Chocolate Factory The melt-in-your-mouth delightful tastes of The Chocolate Factory in Golconda are a Southern Illinois favorite. Now there’s another way to share that great taste and make a fabulous impression for your business, celebration or event at the same time. With the addition of new equipment, The Chocolate Factory can create unique chocolate creations featuring a logo or name in a variety of sizes. “These custom-made Southern Illinois chocolates are ideal as a thank you for

customers, employee recognition, public relations, tourism promotions or retirement celebrations,” Lind Meherg, owner of The Chocolate Factory, explains. Of course, The Chocolate Factory continues to offer all of their regular favorites too, including assorted boxes of chocolates to novelty chocolates, all made right here in Southern Illinois. “We do chocolates from tooth brushes to guitars,” Meherg adds.

Shawnee Winery Shawnee Winery Cooperative was formed to create a market for a group of small grape growers in the Southern Illinois area. The goal was to develop a market for area producers. In meeting that goal, the cooperative has also established itself as a source for some of the finest wines this region has to offer. A full palet of wines ranging from dry and semi-sweet wines to sweet wines like Dreamcatcher or Eagle Ridge Red to the

popular Voyage Into Night dessert wine is available by the bottle or case, and you can also shop their gift shop featuring art from many local artists. Shawnee Winery, located near Vienna, is a great spot for reunions, birthday celebrations or other special events. There’s always something happening at Shawnee Winery!

Herrin Drug Looking for a hometown pharmacy that knows and cares about the community and its people? Look no further than Herrin Drug, a real hometown pharmacy where you can get courteous and professional service from people you know and trust. “I think that people like doing business with people that they know and trust and who they can see face-to-face,” David Mattingly, pharmacist and owner said. “We support and are involved in the community—in church, in local organizations, in youth sports. Our involvement is important and that separates us from the big chain stores.” For nearly three decades, Herrin Drug has been locally owned and operated. The pharmacy is fully accredited, meaning you can trust the products and advice you receive. Unlike big corporate stores – where service is impersonal and sometimes hard to find – at Herrin Drug, education and free consultations about prescriptions and other medications are the norm. Getting prescriptions from Herrin Drug is easy: come into the pharmacy, use the new drive-up window at the convenient downtown location or have your

medications delivered directly to your home. At Herrin Drug, customer service is the top priority, since the staff members are your neighbors and friends. Customers can even drop off dry cleaning, avoiding an extra stop on their errands. A Hallmark Gold Crown store, Herrin Drug offers greeting cards, and gift wrap. You will also find all of the great gifts and supplies to make any occasion extra special. The selection has been expanded over the past year to include more variety and items you’d expect in a larger town. Herrin Drug also carries home health care items and a full line of medical supplies, from first-aid items all the way to hospital beds and liquid oxygen, all with courteous, knowledgeable and professional advice. Herrin Drug carries a large selection of diabetic care supplies including shoes. The friendly staff works with your medical insurance company for your convenience. All of it combine together to make Herrin Drug one of southern Illinois’ most innovative pharmacies. “We are a complete, full-service pharmacy,” Mattingly added.

SIU Credit Union The old advertising adage “Membership has its privileges” could easily be applied to the SIU Credit Union. What began more than 70 years ago as a credit union for people affiliated with Southern Illinois University Carbondale has evolved into a regional financial institution serving more than 27,500 Southern Illinoisans. “We’re very proud of our SIU roots,” says Chris Sievers, marketing director for the SIU Credit Union, “but we’ve expanded with community charters. Anyone in southern Illinois can join the credit union.” SIU Credit Union members benefit from a number of convenient branch locations. There are two in Carbondale, one in Marion and a Metropolis branch serves Massac County. Plus, Sievers says a new location in Energy will be opening later this summer. Sievers explains that a credit union functions like a bank, with one unique characteristic. “The difference is ownership,” he says.

“Banks are owned by other people, but all of our members are owners of the credit union.” Membership in the SIU Credit Union is just $5. Because of the member-owners, credit unions usually have lower fee structures and better returns on investments. “All of our products and services are basically the same as banks, but typically at a credit union, members will see lower fees, better deposit rates and lower loan rates,” he says. Sievers adds members often also see a difference in service. “We work for the members and our members are our owners,” he explains. “We really deliver on offering competitive products and great services. When you walk in the door, we’re going to treat you like an owner because you are an owner.” Members of the SIU Credit Union have access to more than 65,000 free ATMs around the country. Sievers says the network is larger than those of some

national financial institutions, including Bank of America. Plus the ATMs often can be found in convenient locations

including retailers and gas stations. Investment management and advisory services are provided through a partnership with Certified Financial Planner Scott McClatchey, who assists members with money management,

retirement and educational planning and the purchase of a variety of investment products. The SIU Credit Union offers a variety of savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, loans of all types, safe deposit boxes, and debit and credit cards. Debit card users enjoy the benefits of Power Points, an SIUCU program that reward members for doing business with the Credit Union. “A lot of our members take advantage of it, and it’s just a reward for being a member,” Sievers says. “Everybody uses a debit card, why not be rewarded for it?” In the program, members earn points for transactions, savings balances and the use of other services. The points can be exchanged for increases in CD balances, decreases in loan balances or as gift cards. “It’s just another of the unique benefits of credit union membership,” Sievers says.
