Garage got you down? Tips for cleaning, organizing baskets.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Use all your available space. For items you only need occasionally, such as holiday decorations, consider overhead storage units. A 4square-foot platform, for example, holds up to 250 pounds and can be lowered with a cable system. If you want a workbench but don’t have a lot of room, consider one that folds into the wall.

arages may have started out as a place to store cars, but gradually they’ve become a place to store almost everything else, from sports equipment to dog food to holiday decorations.

As the weather gets warmer and the spring cleaning urge gets stronger, it’s a good time to take stock of your garage. Is it a functional space or just a repository for junk? Are there more logical ways to store your belongings? Before you rush out and buy new shelving and cabinets, professional organizer Cindy Tyner recommends putting some serious thought into how you want to use your garage. She says the No. 1 mistake people make is pulling everything out of the garage first and then getting overwhelmed when they try to cram it all back in. “People go out and buy things, like storage systems and bins, and say, ‘This is what I need to get me organized,’ but the things don’t fit the purposes they need,” said Tyner, who owns an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based

Store things close to where you need them, and in logical places. All the gardening equipment should go together, for example, and the bike helmets should be next to the bikes. “Everything has got to have a home. Otherwise it just gets piled up and it’s a snowball effect,” Hunt said.

Pick a sunny day and clear out all your belongings. Decide what will stay, what can be donated and what should be thrown away.

to keep it? If it’s important to keep it, how can you use it? If it’s a family heirloom, should it be sitting in the garage where you can have a variety of problems and moisture?” said Sean Hunt, president of Garage Specialists Inc., a San Bernardino, Calif.-based company that cleans and organizes a few hundred garages a year.

“If you haven’t used it in a year, you need to ask yourself, does it make sense

paint can brighten the walls, and paints made especially for garage floors protect them from oil and gas stains, and prolong the life of the concrete. Consider what kind of storage you need. Costs vary significantly, from $40 plastic shelving to $350 steel shelving. You can use old kitchen cabinets or buy new ones. There are also heavyduty plastic tracks that run along the wall and can be fitted with cabinets, hooks or

Store some things outside. Consider a deck box for children’s toys or a storage shed for gardening tools. Tyner says you just need to make sure to use the new space properly and don’t let it become your new catchall for junk.

Reasons To Keep Your Car's Service Current owner's manual, it will contain a treasure trove of information about not only when the maintenance is required, but also what types of fluids your car is designed to use. You should do your best to follow the instructions precisely because it will keep your car running properly. Failing to follow the instructions could even void your car's warranty.

ext to buying a home, a car is one of the biggest purchases you will make in your lifetime. Considering how it's such a big investment — and one that's so important to your day-to-day life — it's important to make sure your car will last as long as possible.

N

Keeping your vehicle's service current is the best way to do that. For starters, it will save you a lot of money over time. These days everyone is looking for ways to save, and paying attention to the needs of your car is one way to do it. Getting regular oil changes, rotating tires, and occasional tune-ups are all part of maintaining a car. While it's true that an oil change can cost you anywhere between $10 and $50, having this done every 3,000-5,000 miles will keep your car running better. In the long run, this saves a lot of money because it keeps your engine running longer and stronger. Without keeping up with the basic service, bigger problems can arise that will cost much more than the price of a few oil changes, tire rotations or tune-ups. Another reason to stay on top of your car's service is

that a well-maintained car will run more efficiently. This will allow your engine to run smoother and require fewer trips to the gas station to fill up, which in turn will save you money. In addition, maintaining your car and servicing it regularly will keep you safer. Regularly checking your tire pressure is important for many reasons. Car tires with too low of pressure can wear the tires out and cause the tread to be ruined. Tires that have too much pressure have the risk of potential blowouts, which can be dangerous and even fatal.

Likewise, brakes should be checked once or twice a year to make sure they are working properly, or checked if you notice anything unusual about them, such as squealing, grinding, or the need to push on the brakes harder than normal. Obviously, not having properly working brakes on your car is dangerous. Furthermore, regularly servicing your car will make it worth more if or when you decide to sell it or trade it in. By doing simple tasks like keeping the inside of the car clean and washing it frequently, you will keep your car looking nicer and

improve its value. Cleaning the underside of your car is important, especially during the winter months in cold climates, to prevent snow and sludge from corroding the parts. A car that has been regularly serviced, maintained, and looks great on the inside and outside will get you more money when you decide to sell it. A few people even get more money for their car than they originally paid for it, just because they have taken such good care of it. How do you know when it's time to do the maintenance? If you still have your car's

If you don't have the owner's manual — or would be more comfortable having a professional look it over — then you could get the advice from a reputable auto mechanic. These professionals, whether at car dealerships or independent repair shops, will be able to look up information about your car and examine it to see what kind of maintenance you need. Buying a car is part of the American dream. It's a big purchase that should not be taken lightly. Maintaining and servicing your car regularly is imperative and necessary to keep your car in tip-top shape. Doing so will save you money, keep you safer, and make it worth more in the long run. Take pride in your car keep its service current. It will only help you in the long run.
