Q Watching a sad movie the other day, I wondered: Is it difficult for performers to see themselves or their spouses in dangerous or tragic situations onscreen?—C. Holt, Atlanta, Ga.

A It can be. “When we saw Rabbit Hole together, Keith [Urban] wept,” says Nicole Kidman, 43, who plays a woman mourning the loss of her young son. “He was totally in shock. 27 seasons ago to its 6000th, which aired in October? AT At the beginning, it was the intellectual elite who tried out. Now people with limited formal education are going, “Hey, I know this stuff—I’m smart, too.” And they succeed! It’s great. WS How have you changed? AT I looked at one of my early shows, and I was going a hundred miles an hour. I’m not pushing as hard these days. Fans used to challenge me because I was supposed to know everything. Now they just want to get to know me. I like that. WS Do you think you could win Jeopardy!? AT I would do all right in a contest against my peers. Go back to bed. Jan. 3 is Festival of Sleep Day, and, boy, do we all need a solid night of rest! Scientists now know that sleep is essential to memory—your brain uses those hours to arrange memories so you can better recall key emotional moments. Other good reasons to put in the pillow time: People who skimp on sleep show elevated levels of

inflammation (a risk factor for heart disease and stroke) and crave highercalorie foods because of hormone imbalances. “Good sleep equals good health,” says Dr. Stuart Quan of Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine. Track down your forefathers. After seeing our families over the holidays and hearing stories of long ago, some of us want to learn more. That’s why January is such a popular month for researching relatives on ancestry.com, the largest source of online family histories, with 6 billion records. “Everybody wants to know whose shoulders they stand on and where they came from,” says Anastasia Harman, an ancestry.com genealogist. Among its newest offerings are over 2000 oral histories from immigrants who entered the U.S. via Ellis Island; written applications to West Point from 1805 to 1908; and World War II draft cards for the “old man’s registration”—the 230,000 men between the ages of 45 and 64 who joined up in 1942.

Trivialize your time. Thirty-one years after the invention of Trivial Pursuit, games that revolve around knowledge of minutiae are hotter than ever. According to the Toy Industry Association, grown-ups are going mad for board games like Bezzerwizzer (from the German besserwisser, which means “know-it-all”). The game has 20 categories and combines trivia with tactics. Another way to keep your mind sharp and forget about that office inbox: Head to a local bar or restaurant for a game of Team Trivia, a live-points game waged by rival groups. Typically, teams are given the time it takes to play a song to come up with their answers. Never has your knowledge of the cast of Eight Is Enough or the ’86 New York Mets lineup been more useful. Double-date. Think you and your spouse are just too busy to hang out with other couples? A new study has found that those who go on regular double dates with another pair feel much better about their own relationship, according to Richard Slatcher, assistant professor of psychology at Wayne State University and co-author of the study. “One thing that drives commitment is how much the lives of husbands and wives intersect. When you have a good experience with another couple, it makes you happier, adds something fresh, and reinforces the continued

healthy aspect of being a twosome.” The more time you clock with other couples, the better. “You’re rooting for the other relationship to succeed— and by extension, yours, too,” Slatcher says. Look to the stars. There’s been a worldwide spike of interest in astronomy, thanks in part to the spectacular photos of distant galaxies coming in from the Hubble Space Telescope. People are flocking to observatories in Hawaii, New Mexico, Arizona, and California—or taking advantage of free stargazing nights at local colleges and planetariums. But really, “you don’t have to drive anywhere to stargaze,” says Rick Fienberg of the American Astronomical Society. “There is plenty you can see from your front yard with a pair of

More and more people are having virtual high school reunions on Facebook. All it takes is one person to scan in all those 30-year-old yearbook photos, create a group, and send invites. In no time, word will spread, and people who’ve been out of touch since graduation will be sharing updates on kids and jobs—and admitting to some long-ago crush on that quiet girl in trigonometry. Ready to Rethink your treatment for osteoporosis?

Ariadne W., Cadillac, MI Novartis spokesperson and actual patient since 2007

I did. I asked about Reclast.

Go to www.reclast.com to hear more stories like Ariadne’s

Think Reclast

What to Expect

Reclast is a bisphosphonate like Fosamax,® Actonel® and Boniva.® With oral bisphosphonate treatments, only a fraction of the medicine gets to the bone with each dose, so you have to take them more frequently.

The benefits of Reclast last for a year. Most common side effects don’t. The most common side effects include flu-like symptoms, fever, muscle or joint pain and headache. Most occur within 1–3 days of treatment and can last up to 7–14 days. If you’ve taken oral bisphosphonates in the past, you are less likely to experience side effects. Taking a mild pain reliever like acetaminophen up to 3 days after treatment may reduce these symptoms.

With Reclast, it’s possible to significantly increase your bone mass without taking weekly or monthly osteoporosis pills. Reclast is the only once-yearly osteoporosis treatment, and is given through an IV by a doctor or nurse for at least 15 minutes.

How It Works One annual dose, along with daily calcium and vitamin D, helps to increase bone density, protecting and strengthening your bones. Reclast is given through an IV. It bypasses your stomach to go directly through the bloodstream to the bones, fortifying them and making them stronger for an entire year.

The Cost The average cost of a Reclast treatment is under $60 if you’ve already paid your yearly deductible. That’s less than the annual cost of other drugs — including generics! As Reclast is an infusion, costs are covered by Medicare Part B, not Medicare Part D.

Talk to Your Doctor Only your doctor can determine if Reclast is right for you. Ask your doctor about Reclast today.

Please see next page for a brief summary of Important Product Information.

Prescription Reclast is approved to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. Important Safety Information: You should not take Reclast if you’re on Zometa® (zoledronic acid) Injection because it contains the same active ingredient. Additionally, you should not take Reclast if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, you are nursing, have low blood calcium, kidney problems, or are allergic to Reclast. It’s important to drink fluids before getting Reclast to help prevent kidney problems. Tell your doctor if you have dental problems because rarely, problems with the jaw have been reported with Reclast. Discuss all medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements. If you develop severe bone, joint, or muscle pain, numbness, tingling or muscle spasms, contact your doctor.

you, ACE suggests going to ideafit.com/fitness-boot-camps.

Create your own life coach. New phone and computer apps can help you get on top of what most needs doing. There are great ones for going on a diet (Lose It!); organizing your bills (Pageonce); getting nutritional info (My Family Food); avoiding rush-hour delays (Beat the Traffic); finding the freshest local produce (locavore); and getting the best coupon deals (GeoQpons).

Plan a getaway. In recent years, taking a “staycation” seemed to many of us like a smart (and frugal) way to use vacation time. Now another trend is gaining traction: the “togethering” trip, a convening of extended family or old friends in one spot. Meet up with your favorite cousins for a week of shows in Branson, Mo.; book a long weekend with your softball league in Cooperstown, N.Y., to tour the National Baseball Hall of Fame; or recruit your college sorority sisters to join you at a yoga retreat. Have little ones? Indoor-water-park hotels are a popular winter destination.

Work out like a grunt. Atten-shun! Fitness boot camp is the new exercise of choice for people wary of gimmicks and expensive gym fees. Led by certified trainers, boot-camp groups meet (anywhere from 55 to 90 minutes) in gyms,

ladders—from P.E., but that doesn’t mean they’re easy. “There’s a sense of pride for people in these camps because you’re doing the same things as athletes,” says Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist at the American Council on Exercise (ACE). To find a boot camp near

didn’t begin 2011 by whipping up a New Year’s resolution list. There was no piece of paper scribbled with hopeful reminders like “Exercise more!” and “Eat six helpings of fruits and vegetables.” Fifteen years ago, she decided that resolutions only set you up to stumble, so she came up with a new plan: Every year, in early December, she starts identifying “pre-resolutions,” things she hopes to achieve by her birthday on March 18. “If I want to trim down or something, I do a little bit here and there,” she says. “That way I don’t have to go cold turkey on New Year’s Day.” This is vintage Latifah. The immensely popular star—who grew up Dana Owens in Newark, N.J., the daughter of a policeman and a teacher—is known for keeping her own clock, often running hours behind schedule yet still managing to get everything accomplished. At 40, she has made her mark in almost every medium: as an award-winning rapper, singer, Oscar-nominated actress, producer, author of two memoirs, and the driving force behind the Queen Collection, her own line of CoverGirl cosmetics. As she puts it, “My mom raised me not to put all of my eggs in one basket.” Fans will see her next on Wednesday night, when she hosts the 37th annual People’s Choice Awards on CBS. “The thing I like most about it is that it’s about the fans and their favorites,” says Latifah, who has emceed the show four times before. “It’s the top of the year, so it continued

But when the two were on set, Fanning wondered how she should address a woman who answers to everything from Day to Latifah to Yo. “I’d hear so many names that I actually asked the director, ‘What am I supposed to call her? What does she prefer?’ ” Fanning recalls. “I settled on La.” Faced with the same predicament, Ron Howard, who directed Latifah in the buddy comedy The Dilemma (in theaters Jan. 14), gives royalty its due. “Queen works hard and makes it fun. People love her,” he says of early reactions to the film. He also marvels at how Latifah turned in a key performance as a business-savvy consultant for the auto industry while keeping all of her other enterprises going. “She’s spinning a lot of plates, and she’s fascinated with them all,” he adds. “She gives off this casual vibe, yet there’s all this productivity coming out of her world.” Latifah, who splits her time between New Jersey, Miami, and Los Angeles, says that in 10 years, she hopes to be “on cruise control, with a couple of kids under my belt.” Is she making a move in that direction? “It’s in the Lord’s hands.” Meanwhile, her overarching goal right now “is just to enjoy life more. I work a lot. I want to make sure I’m living life to the fullest and checking in with me.” Here, she shares her insights about some of the lessons life has already taught her.

Finally, Latifah has some advice for Kate Midd leton, as one queen to a future royal: “Make sure you have a sanctuary, because everybody in the world is going to be in your business. He happened to be born a prince; you happened to go to college and meet him. You’re two kids who fell in love. I just hope you have a happy life. And don’t take anything personally.” See more photos from our shoot with Queen Latifah at Parade.com/latifah

Sunday with... You wrote a blistering piece on Politico about Sarah Palin in November. Did you hear from her? No. I will say I flinched when I wrote it, because I know the personal impact words can have on candidates’ kids and spouses. But I just know she’s not qualified to be president. By the way, I don’t think she’s going to run. I don’t think it was a coincidence that a lot of that presidential talk came when she was releasing her book. As Newt Gingrich said, “Tell people you’re going to run for president—it helps move books!”

INE YEARS AGO, JOE SCARBOROUGH WALKED AWAY

from politics—he was a Republican representative from Florida—and crossed over to the other side: the media. Since then, he has happily confounded expectations. He’s a die-hard conservative who has hosted the Morning Joe show on liberal-minded MSNBC for more than three years. He’s openly critical of both President Obama and his own party. He’s an avid fan of the Beatles but prefers their more experimental period, not their clean-cut early days. In his office at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, surrounded by Beatles posters and a guitar (he’s also a songwriter), Scarborough, 47, revealed to David Browne why’s he’s anything but a regular Joe. PARADE Do you get to sleep in

on Sundays? Unfortunately, I’ve gotten so conditioned, it’s hard to sleep past 4 a.m. When I’m in town on Sundays, I sometimes go down to the Central Bar in the East Village to watch English football.

But my natural inclination now is to get in the car with my wife and kids and get out of town. I’m like a dog—I look out the window and I’m mesmerized: “Trees!” I guess I’m becoming more of a New Yorker.

What’s in that cup in front of you on Morning Joe? That’s an iced latte, skinny. I have a couple of those. Mika [Brzezinski, his co-host] is a little more addicted—she has a supersized caffeinated drink. The caffeine leaves my system around 4, and I struggle to stay up till 9 each night. At 6, my wife will say, “Don’t leave me! Stay awake!” What traits does Mika share with your wife, Susan? They’re both tough. They both T think I talk too much. And they both plot and scheme against me at all times! There’s a steady sstream of text messages between tthem while we’re on the air. Mika

What advice do you have for the incoming Tea Party members? In 1994 we were elected because of [dissatisfaction with] Bill Clinton, and we were seen as overreaching and shrill, so we effectively re-elected Clinton in 1996! If Republicans overreach in 2011, they will re-elect Barack Obama in 2012. They need to focus but make sure they don’t scare little kids and pets. This is the Republican Party’s last chance—not just for me but for the American voters. They will either mean what they say or be swept aside. In your 2009 book, The Last Best Hope, you favorably compared Barack Obama to Ronald Reagan. Would you still make that comparison today?

No, I wouldn’t. Ronald Reagan knew who he was. Barack Obama is still working through that equation politically.

COPD?

Find out if ADVAIR® can help you breathe better and take center stage in your own life.

What Democrat do you admire most? Hillary Clinton. She’s doing a great job as secretary of state. I was surprised that the woman we were deriding as an out-of-touch left-wing elitist in 1993 became the hero of working-class Americans in 2008. It was a remarkable transformation. What Beatles songs did you download on iTunes? It was so embarrassing. I have the records and CDs, and yet I went click, click, click and probably downloaded 40 songs. I was so swept away that I downloaded “And Your Bird Can Sing” twice.

ADVAIR helps improve your lung function so you breathe better.* That way, you may be able to take more of a leading role in your own life. Unlike most COPD medications, ADVAIR contains both an anti-inflammatory† and a long-acting bronchodilator working together. ADVAIR is not for, and should not be used to treat, sudden, severe symptoms of COPD. It won’t replace a rescue inhaler. Ask your doctor about ADVAIR. To get your first full prescription free and to save on refills,‡ visit ADVAIR.com or call 1-800-520-4197. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is approved for adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. You should only take 1 inhalation of ADVAIR twice a day. Higher doses will not provide additional benefits.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 FOR COPD:

Who’s on your wish list of guests who haven’t been on Morning Joe? I want Paul McCartney and Pete Townshend. In Washington, I found myself as a 31-year-old in a room with the president, vice president, and secretaries of state and defense, and I was unfazed by it. But get me around a rock star I grew up with and I have trouble completing sentences. What would make Joe Scarborough consider running for office again? Find out at Parade.com/scarborough

• if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins. Ask your doctor if you are not sure. BRIEF SUMMARY This summary does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. See full Prescribing Information for complete product information. What is the most important information I should know about ADVAIR DISKUS? ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects, including: 1. People with asthma who take long-acting beta 2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) medicines, such as salmeterol (one of the medicines in ADVAIR DISKUS), have an increased risk of death from asthma problems. It is not known whether fluticasone propionate, the other medicine in ADVAIR DISKUS, reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with salmeterol. • Call your healthcare provider if breathing problems worsen over time while using ADVAIR DISKUS. You may need different treatment. • Get emergency medical care if: - breathing problems worsen quickly and - you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it does not relieve your breathing problems. 2. ADVAIR DISKUS should be used only if your healthcare provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as inhaled corticosteroids. 3. When your asthma is well controlled, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking ADVAIR DISKUS. Your healthcare provider will decide if you can stop ADVAIR DISKUS without loss of asthma control. Your healthcare provider may prescribe a different asthma control medicine for you, such as an inhaled corticosteroid. 4. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may have an increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma problems. What is ADVAIR DISKUS? • ADVAIR DISKUS combines an inhaled corticosteroid medicine, fluticasone propionate (the same medicine found in FLOVENT®), and a LABA medicine, salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT®). - Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease inflammation in the lungs. Inflammation in the lungs can lead to asthma symptoms. - LABA medicines are used in people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). LABA medicines help the muscles around the airways in your lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your breathing and cause death if not treated right away. • ADVAIR DISKUS is used for asthma and COPD as follows: Asthma ADVAIR DISKUS is used to control symptoms of asthma and to prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and children aged 4 years and older. ADVAIR DISKUS contains salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT). LABA medicines, such as salmeterol, increase the risk of death from asthma problems. ADVAIR DISKUS is not for adults and children with asthma who: - are well controlled with another asthma control medicine, such as a low to medium dose of an inhaled corticosteroid medicine - have sudden asthma symptoms. COPD COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is used long term, 2 times each day to help improve lung function for better breathing in adults with COPD. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 has been shown to decrease the number of flare-ups and worsening of COPD symptoms (exacerbations).

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using ADVAIR DISKUS? Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions, including if you: • have heart problems • have high blood pressure • have seizures • have thyroid problems • have diabetes • have liver problems • have osteoporosis • have an immune system problem • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if ADVAIR DISKUS may harm your unborn baby. • are breastfeeding. A new study that followed 299 adults for 13 years found that walking six to nine miles a week may stop your brain from shrinking as you age. “Exercise increases the amount of blood going to the brain,” says lead study author Kirk Erickson, a University of Pittsburgh professor. “This means that more of the important nutrients necessary for the brain to Exercise function are increases distributed.” Researchers blood found that the flow to more particithe brain. pants walked, the more gray matter they retained (though exceeding nine miles a week provided no additional benefits). Those who walked the most had half the risk of developing memory problems as those who walked the least. “Some loss of brain matter is normal with age,” Erickson says. “But with increased exercise, the parts of the brain that support memory function—the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus—are spared. The earlier you start exercising, the better, but it’s never too late,” he adds. “Any amount you do will help.” 18 • January 2, 2011

P “For a diabeticfriendly lasagna, I use lowcarbohydrate pasta, which is better for postmeal glucose levels,” Paul says.

Fun by the Slice

For actors Paul & Mira Sorvino, sticking to a healthy diet is a family affair

cle

Mira My dad’s a type-2 diabetic, and

he used to not be in control of his blood sugar. One time he had a big bowl of pasta fagioli—pasta with beans, a Neapolitan delicacy—and his blood sugar got extremely high. He turned a different color and got very faint. That was a wake-up call for me: that I needed to help him stick to his treatment plan. Paul So she makes a salad as big as the Bronx! Cooking is a huge part of our lives, but now we do things differently, like this lasagna. Mira Dad always sings Neapolitan songs while he cooks, and it’s really fun. Paul “O Marenariello,” which means “the little sailor boy,” is good for singing while making marinara sauce. It’s really a sailor’s sauce. It was created in Naples on little fishing boats. Mira Speaking of songs, “O Sole Mio” was actually written about Dad’s aunt when she was a little girl. Paul The family Sorvino lived next to the lyricist Giovanni Capurro. After a rainstorm, he saw my aunt sitting in a window with beautiful long blond hair and big blue eyes, and he said, “The sun comes from this child’s face.” “O Sole Mio” means “my sun.” 20 • January 2, 2011

Finally, a cell phone that’s… a phone!

“Well, I finally did it. I finally decided to enter the digital age and get a cell phone. My kids have been bugging me, my book group made fun of me, and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones are so small I can’t see the numbers, much less push the right one. They all have cameras, computers and a “global-positioning” something or other that’s supposed to spot me from space. Goodness, all I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! The people at the store weren’t much help. They couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were complicated, confusing, and expensive… and the contract lasted for two years! I’d almost given up when a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being able to stay in touch… with a phone I can actually use.”

Questions about Jitterbug? Try our pre-recorded Toll-Free Hotline1-877-743-5233. The cell phone that’s right for me. Sometimes I think the people who designed this phone and the rate plans had me in mind. The phone fits easily in my pocket, but it flips open and reaches from my mouth to my ear. The display is large and backlit, so I can actually see who is calling. With a push of a button I can amplify the volume, and if I don’t know a number, I can simply push one for a friendly, helpful operator that will look it up and even dial it for me. The Jitterbug also reduces background noise, making the sound loud and clear. There’s even a dial tone, so I know the phone is ready to use.

Did you know osteoporosis runs in families? My mother and I both have it. I tried to keep my bones strong, but it wasn’t enough. Now, once-monthly BONIVA is helping me do more. Studies show, after a year † on BONIVA, 9 out of 10 women stopped and reversed their bone loss. BONIVA is a prescription medication to treat and prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Ask your doctor if BONIVA is right for you. Important Safety Information: You should not take BONIVA if you have certain problems with your esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach), low blood calcium, cannot sit or stand for at least 60 minutes, have severe kidney disease, or are allergic to BONIVA. Stop taking BONIVA and tell your doctor right away if you experience difficult or painful swallowing, chest pain, or severe or continuing heartburn, as these may be signs of serious upper digestive problems. Follow the dosing instructions for once-monthly BONIVA carefully to lower the chance of these events occurring. Side effects may include diarrhea, pain in the arms or legs, or upset stomach. Tell your doctor and dentist about all the medicines you take. Tell them if you develop jaw problems (especially following a dental procedure) or severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain. Your doctor may also recommend a calcium and vitamin D supplement. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

1. Country Strong soundtrack (CD/$13) This one’s jammed with goodies. Gwyneth Paltrow’s countrification on behalf of her latest film has been much scrutinized, but her woebegone wail on “Me and Tennessee,” a duet with Tim McGraw, may make you a believer. Her fellow thespians Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund strut their stuff equally well. And let’s not forget Nashville royalty like Ronnie Dunn and Sara Evans—who’s fantabulous on the rousing “A Little Bit Stronger.”

4. Despicable Me

5. Gryphon: New and Selected Stories (fiction /$28)

(DVD/$30)

We love a villain whose heart melts when he meets three little girls. Add robot cookies, yellow “minions,” and a splendid vocal cast, and you’ve got an animated film that the whole family can enjoy again and again.

A feast of affecting encounters from the author of the celebrated The Feast of Love. Charles Baxter’s indelible characters—most of them unarmed “against the infidelities of the future”— include a man determined to buoy his orphaned nephew (by faking positive horoscopes for him) and a mysterious substitute teacher who veers well away from the lesson plan.

2. Blue Valentine (film/Dec. 31) Ryan Gosling has described this poignant drama as a sort of companion piece to The Notebook, in that it shows what can happen to love after the honeymoon period. Fair warning: The couple played by Gosling and Michelle Williams have a tumultuous union marked by sex, anger, and disappointment. But you’d be hard-pressed to find two finer performances.

6. I Used to Be Fat (MTV/ Wed., 10 p.m. ET/PT)

Tired of weight-loss stories that are all about extreme competition? This series, which each week follows a new teen struggling to drop pounds, informs and inspires precisely because it proves that real-life success comes only in small, hard-earned increments.

7. Southland (TNT/Tues., 10 p.m. ET/PT)

3. Dog, Inc. (nonfiction/$26) John Woestendiek’s outstanding look at dog cloning explores what goes down when science, personal loss, and financial opportunism collide. It is also a larger, more melancholy take on the wild demands we now make on man’s best friend.

In the sea of current cop shows, Southland remains the grittiest and most compelling. Missing out on its stellar ensemble cast and documentary-like camerawork would be nothing short of criminal.
