A: We asked composer
Alan Menken, 61, who co-wrote the Golden Globe–nominated song “I See the Light” for Tangled, to weigh in: “I pride myself on the fact that, with my music, you can hear dialogue and lyrics, but I have noticed that these days ‘louder’ seems to mean ‘better.’ I think people feel like it makes more of an impact. Ironically, it’s the opposite: When music is very quiet, the impact is much greater.”
P Jennifer Lopez
Q: If Jennifer Lopez is
such a diva, why does she seem so nice on the American Idol promos?—B. Jones, Chicago, Ill.
A: It’s true, J. Lo has been
decidedly funny and sympathetic at the early Idol auditions. “I see that fear in their eyes as they come before us,” says Lopez, 41, “and it’s the same kind of terror I felt when I wanted
to be noticed.” Still, she isn’t going to gush nonstop: “I can be very direct—sometimes you have to be.” What’s been the hardest part? “The real difficult ones to decide about are the ones in the middle. Maybe they can sing, but you don’t see the potential of the whole package. Or maybe they have star quality more than talent. I can tell pretty fast if someone has a point of view and something they need to say.” As for that diva thing, Lopez protests: “Everyone who works with me calls me ‘Ma.’ And that started way before I had children.”

Why is the word “playwright” spelled with a “w” when the word “copyright” is not?
i’m sure you’ve heard the adjective and verb “wrought,” referring to work shaped by intellect, artistry, effort, etc. (For example: wrought iron.) The maker of the project is called a “wright.” In the case of a play, he or she is a playwright. “Copyright” refers to the exclusive legal “right to copy” (and sell, etc.) an original work of authorship, such as a book, photo, or play.

And I was plucked by Rupert Murdoch to edit the News of the World when I was 28. He drummed into me that in newspapers, you’ve got to break great stories. It’s the same with an interview show. As a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, you watched Susan Boyle cope with an unprecedented level of instant fame—she even wound up briefly in a psychiatric facility. Knowing what you know now, would you have done anything differently? She wasn’t left on her own, but I certainly think the attitude was, Give her a couple of family members and she’ll be okay. Of course, it was much bigger than that. The low point came when she was admitted to the Priory Clinic, because then we realized this was pretty serious. I think everyone regrets that we didn’t work that out quicker. Having said that, she just thinks that she needed a good sleep and couldn’t get one. The cynics say, “Let Susan Boyle go back to her old life; this is all too much for her.” But she says, “Why on earth would I want to go back to my old life?” She’s the biggest-selling artist in the world. my father’s birth, what accounts for his uncanny magic? He’s been gone from public life for nearly 20 years, dead for over half a decade, yet he’s remained alive in the minds of many Americans. Most people, whatever their political beliefs, relate to my father as president of the United States. For eight years, he was my president, too. But he was my father for my entire life. My memories start with him lifting me and “flying” me through the rooms of our house, mimicking the drone of a propeller engine, before swooping me into bed for the night. Using one of his early nicknames for me, he would sing in his soft, unself-conscious tenor:

the world made you want to shield him from harsh reality. His dreams might strike you as naive, but the way he cherished them made you reluctant to shatter his illusions. Who wouldn’t, after all, want to live in a shining city? We all grow up idolizing, dethroning, and, with luck, later befriending our fathers, but can we really know them? Do they care to know us? At his own father’s funeral, Dad was overcome by a wave of despair until, he said, he heard Jack’s voice telling him, “I’m okay.” I have not, as of yet, heard my father’s voice whispering in my ear, but I haven’t stopped listening.

was shot by John Hinckley Jr. as he was leaving the Hilton in Washington, D.C. My wife and I were in Lincoln, Neb., but we hurried back to D.C. and headed straight for the hospital. Dad was in surgery, and I gathered immediately that the situation was dire. My mother, unsurprisingly, looked pale and shaken. She seemed even tinier than usual in a room full of bustling, officious bodies, none of them telling her what she wanted to hear: Her husband was still alive, he would make it. Her prime directive for 30 years had been to support, nurture, and protect my father. Now, with his life hanging by a thread, she was locked out of the room, helpless. Much has been made of my father’s joking that day: “Honey, I forgot to duck”; “All in all, I’d rather be in Philadelphia”; and, to his surgeons, “Please tell me you’re all Republicans.” Del Wilber, a journalist working on a book about the assassination attempt, told me that Dad first tried out that last line in the emergency room, where the personnel were understandably in no mood for humor. So he filed it away for a more opportune moment—like surgery. There he got the properly appreciative reac-
tion, as lead trauma surgeon Dr. Joseph Giordano—a liberal Democrat—told him, “Today, Mr. President, we’re all Republicans.” Bleeding to death with a bullet in his chest, and he’s doing shtick. That was so Dad. Anyone reading this who knew him will be nodding and thinking: He was embarrassed to be putting everyone out. The idea that schedules had been disrupted, people’s routines upended, that he had been an agent of chaos, would have filled him with dismay. He was the one meant to bring order to the world. He was supposed to be the lifesaver. Between the moment he was shot and the time he left surgery, Dad lost roughly half his blood volume. That he survived is testament to the quick reactions of Jerry Parr and his Secret Service detail and the sterling care he received at George Washington University hospital. He was discharged after two weeks, and his recovery—a few complications notwithstanding—proceeded apace. A state-of-the-art home gym was installed in the White House living quarters. Before long, Dad was boasting that he’d added an inch of muscle to his chest. In a town where everything is rendered into political advantage (or its

opposite), Dad’s plucky response to near assassination earned him valuable capital during his first term. His cherished tax cuts were passed. However, they were scaled back when it became apparent that trickle-down economics was, indeed, “voodoo.” His approval rating in polls fell to 35% but then revived along with economic indicators. Before you knew it, another campaign season was coming round again. We children might have found it strange that our father, whom we had witnessed scampering about the house in his Y-fronts, could have become president. But from the moment he entered politics back in the ’60s and people began speaking of him as presidential material, none of us doubted that he could win. We never had second thoughts about his ability to fill the chair. This made my telling him that I didn’t want him to run for re-election in 1984 distinctly uncomfortable. I said: “You’ve already been shot once. That’ll only give other idiots ideas—and there are plenty of them out there. I don’t want to see anything like that happen again. I know you’ve already made up your mind, but I have to tell you, I’d prefer you didn’t run.”

Always running to the bathroom? Maybe your internal plumbing isn’t working like it should. This checklist can help you talk to your doctor about it.
YES
When I go out, I always make sure there’s a bathroom nearby.
NO
Once I get the sudden urge to go, I can’t wait. I wear pads sometimes because I worry I might accidentally leak. I’ve had enough, and I’m ready to do something about my urges and leaks. If you answered “Yes” to any of these, tear out this checklist and talk to your doctor about your results. Only your doctor can determine if you have overactive bladder. Once-daily VESIcare is proven to treat overactive bladder with symptoms of frequent urges and leaks.* That’s because it can help control your bladder muscle, day and night. So ask your doctor about taking care with VESIcare. *Results may vary. USE AND DOSE
VESIcare is for overactive bladder with symptoms of urgency, frequency, and leakage. The recommended dose of VESIcare is 5 mg once daily. If the 5-mg dose is well tolerated, your doctor may increase the dose to 10 mg once daily. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
VESIcare is not for everyone. If you have certain stomach or glaucoma problems, or trouble emptying your bladder, do not take VESIcare. VESIcare may cause allergic reactions that may be serious. If you experience swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue, stop taking VESIcare and get emergency help. Tell your doctor right away if you have severe abdominal pain, or become constipated for three or more days. VESIcare may cause blurred vision, so use caution while driving or doing unsafe tasks. Common side effects are dry mouth, constipation, and indigestion. Please see Important Patient Information on the following page. Clip here, tear out, and pipe up to your doctor.
Every word I spoke was true. But I had other concerns as well, ones I couldn’t share. Three years into his first term as president, I felt the first shivers of concern that something beyond mellowing was affecting my father. We’d always argued over this issue or that. He generally had the advantage of practiced talking points backed up by staff research, but I was an unabashed, occasionally effective advocate for my own positions. “He told me you make him feel stupid,” my mother once shared, to my alarm. I didn’t want my father to feel stupid. If he was going to shoulder massive responsibility, I wanted him to feel on top of his game. If he was going to fulfill his duties as president, he would have to be. Watching his first debate with 1984 Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale, I began to experience the nausea of a bad dream coming true. At 73, Ronald Reagan would be the oldest president ever re-elected. Some voters were imagining grandpa in charge of a bristling nuclear arsenal, and it was making them nervous. Worse, my father now seemed to be giving them reason for concern. My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses. He looked tired and bewildered. In the debate’s aftermath, Dad knew he’d performed badly but convinced himself he’d been “overtrained.” There may have been some truth to that. My earlier worries, however, remained. I flew out to Kansas City, Mo., for the second continued

With a sharp slap on the behind from his younger son, he entered the hall his usual confident self. The Mondale campaign effectively ended when Dad, responding to a question about his fitness for office, ad-libbed that he would not “exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.” Backstage afterward, I high-fived Dad and let out a loud whoop. He went on, of course, to one of the most dominant victories in presidential election history, with Mondale winning only one state— Minnesota, his home—out of 50. I don’t want to give the impression that my father was mumbling incoherently during this or any period. SundayDinner
Patricia Heaton, star of ABC’s The Middle, serves up a hearty, relaxed dinner that she made with her mom as a child
P “Don’t rush when you fry the meatballs in oil. Sometimes if I’m in a hurry, I turn the heat up too high. Then they get burned.”
cle
I have four boys. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of time on a big dinner you hope they’ll enjoy, and then— after you knock yourself out—having them push the food around their plates for a few minutes and ask to be excused. But most kids eat pasta, and mine love my spaghetti and meatballs. It was one of the dinners my mother made all the time. She died when I was 12, so I didn’t have that much time with her, but she taught me how to make meatballs. That was kind of my job, and I really looked forward to it. I would come home from school, wash my hands, and get to work browning them in the pan. It’s the sort of great, old-fashioned comfort food anybody can make. Recipes on the Food Network look fun—and there’s nothing wrong with trying new dishes—but we’re all so busy! The kids have homework and activities. But I know if I serve this with a red sauce, a nice salad, and some great buttery-hot garlic bread, we’ll have a relaxed dinner. It’s “mmmmmm.”

ADVAIR helps improve your lung function so you breathe better.* That way, you may be able to take more of a leading role in your own life. Unlike most COPD medications, ADVAIR contains both an anti-inflammatory† and a long-acting bronchodilator working together. ADVAIR is not for, and should not be used to treat, sudden, severe symptoms of COPD. It won’t replace a rescue inhaler. Ask your doctor about ADVAIR. To get your first full prescription free and to save on refills,‡ visit ADVAIR.com or call 1-800-520-4197. • if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins. Ask your doctor if you are not sure. BRIEF SUMMARY This summary does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. See full Prescribing Information for complete product information. What is the most important information I should know about ADVAIR DISKUS? ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects, including: 1. People with asthma who take long-acting beta 2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) medicines, such as salmeterol (one of the medicines in ADVAIR DISKUS), have an increased risk of death from asthma problems. It is not known whether fluticasone propionate, the other medicine in ADVAIR DISKUS, reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with salmeterol. • Call your healthcare provider if breathing problems worsen over time while using ADVAIR DISKUS. You may need different treatment. • Get emergency medical care if: - breathing problems worsen quickly and - you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it does not relieve your breathing problems. 2. ADVAIR DISKUS should be used only if your healthcare provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as inhaled corticosteroids. 3. When your asthma is well controlled, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking ADVAIR DISKUS. Your healthcare provider will decide if you can stop ADVAIR DISKUS without loss of asthma control. Your healthcare provider may prescribe a different asthma control medicine for you, such as an inhaled corticosteroid. 4. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may have an increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma problems. What is ADVAIR DISKUS? • ADVAIR DISKUS combines an inhaled corticosteroid medicine, fluticasone propionate (the same medicine found in FLOVENT®), and a LABA medicine, salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT®). - Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease inflammation in the lungs. Inflammation in the lungs can lead to asthma symptoms. - LABA medicines are used in people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). LABA medicines help the muscles around the airways in your lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your breathing and cause death if not treated right away. • ADVAIR DISKUS is used for asthma and COPD as follows: Asthma ADVAIR DISKUS is used to control symptoms of asthma and to prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and children aged 4 years and older. ADVAIR DISKUS contains salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT). LABA medicines, such as salmeterol, increase the risk of death from asthma problems. ADVAIR DISKUS is not for adults and children with asthma who: - are well controlled with another asthma control medicine, such as a low to medium dose of an inhaled corticosteroid medicine - have sudden asthma symptoms. COPD COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is used long term, 2 times each day to help improve lung function for better breathing in adults with COPD. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 has been shown to decrease the number of flare-ups and worsening of COPD symptoms (exacerbations).
What should I tell my healthcare provider before using ADVAIR DISKUS? Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions, including if you: • have heart problems • have high blood pressure • have seizures • have thyroid problems • have diabetes • have liver problems • have osteoporosis • have an immune system problem • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. ADVAIR DISKUS and certain other medicines may interact with each other. This may cause serious side effects. Especially, tell your healthcare provider if you take ritonavir. The anti-HIV medicines NORVIR ® (ritonavir capsules) Soft Gelatin, NORVIR (ritonavir oral solution), and KALETRA ® (lopinavir/ ritonavir) Tablets contain ritonavir. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist each time you get a new medicine. How do I use ADVAIR DISKUS? Do not use ADVAIR DISKUS more often than prescribed. ADVAIR DISKUS comes in 3 strengths. The 2 doses should be about 12 hours apart. Rinse your mouth with water after using ADVAIR DISKUS. • If you take more ADVAIR DISKUS than your doctor has prescribed, get medical help right away if you have any unusual symptoms, such as worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, increased heart rate, or shakiness. • If you miss a dose of ADVAIR DISKUS, just skip that dose. Take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take 2 doses at one time. • Do not use a spacer device with ADVAIR DISKUS. • Do not breathe into ADVAIR DISKUS. • While you are using ADVAIR DISKUS 2 times each day, do not use other medicines that contain a LABA for any reason. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if any of your other medicines are LABA medicines. • Do not stop using ADVAIR DISKUS or other asthma medicines unless told to do so by your healthcare provider because your symptoms might get worse. Your healthcare provider will change your medicines as needed. • ADVAIR DISKUS does not relieve sudden symptoms. Always have a rescue inhaler medicine with you to treat sudden symptoms. office. Had the diagnosis been made in, say, 1987, would he have stepped down? I believe he would have. Today we are aware that the changes associated with Alzheimer’s can be in evidence years, even decades, before identifiable symptoms arise. The question, then, of whether my father suffered from the beginning stages of the disease while in office more or less answers itself. Does this delegitimize his presidency? Only to the extent that President Kennedy’s Addison’s disease and Lincoln’s clinical depression undermine theirs. Better to judge our presidents by what they actually accomplish than what hidden factors may be weighing on them. We are entitled to approve or disapprove of my father’s conduct in office irrespective of his medical condition. That likely condition, though, serves as a reminder that when we elect presidents, we elect human beings with all their foibles and weaknesses. I find something courageous in my father’s dedicated pursuit—even in the face of his declining powers— of peaceful rapprochement with the Soviet Union, the world’s other nuclear superpower, throughout his second term. He never stopped wanting to save the world. Reprinted by arrangement with Viking Penguin, part of Penguin Group (USA) Inc., from My Father at 100 by Ron Reagan. © 2011 by Ron Reagan

w What would you do if you won the lottery? Buy a fancy car? That’s what Cynthia Stafford did after cashing in her $112 million ticket. She scooped up two Bentleys—a baby-blue convertible and a bright-orange sedan. Maybe you’d take a first-class trip to Paris? Or hire a personal

She predicted every bit of her journey. “I knew I’d get here,” Stafford says, as she sits in the elegant living room of her Los Angeles–area home. “It was just a matter of visualizing it.” Back in January 2007, Stafford was raising five children and struggling to pay the bills, so she

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BONIVA began lulling herself to sleep at night by imagining that she was holding a lottery check. She pictured the exact amount: $112 followed by lots of zeroes. The story seems implausible, and yet Stafford’s steady gaze and positive energy make you believe her, even the bit about knowing what she’d be wearing when she won: a lime-green blouse with a leaf print. “That part kept surprising me,” she says, laughing. “I thought I’d lose weight by then and wouldn’t still have that top.” But that’s what she was wearing the next Mother’s Day when she learned the $2 ticket she’d bought made her the sole winner in a drawing worth, yes, $112 million. “When I found out, I sat in silence for a minute because it confirmed how powerful our minds can be,” she says with a grin. “Then I started screaming and crying!” Stafford had always been generous, even when she had much less to give. As a 6-year-old, she forked over her allowance to UNICEF, and when her younger brother died in a car crash in 1999, she took in his children: Qumani, now 14; Sigourney, 15; Jahmil, 18; Charmaine, 20; and Presley, 22. Stafford opted to take a $67 million lump-sum payout from the lottery. So, after sharing the prize with her father and older brother, putting away funds for the kids’ education, and making a few giddy purchases, she wrote substantial checks to organizations including UNICEF, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and God’s Love We Deliver. Then she set about fulfilling her own continued

I know why millions of Americans are saving on their heating bills with the EdenPURE ® Infrared Portable Heater. And now you can save up to $192, our lowest prices ever on the 2011 EdenPURE® Personal Heater, the finest portable heater in the world. For over 30 years as your home improvement television host, I have reviewed and experienced thousands of products. I have an EdenPURE ® in my Massachusetts home and found it to be a very safe and reliable source of portable heat. This is one of those few comfort investments I can recommend for your home that will truly pay dividends. We all know heating costs are expected to remain at record levels. The cost of heating our homes will continue to be a significant burden on the family budget. The EdenPURE® can cut your heating bills, pay for itself in a matter of weeks, and then start putting a great deal of extra money in your pocket after that. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EdenPURE ® heats better, faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent. A major cause of residential fires in the United States is portable heaters. The choice of fire and safety professionals everywhere, the EdenPURE® has no exposed heating elements that can cause a fire. The outside of the EdenPURE® only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like my dog who has reserved a favorite spot near the EdenPURE®. Accept no imitations. The EdenPURE® can also help you feel better. Unlike EdenPURE® imitators, it will not reduce humidity or oxygen in the room. These imitators use ceramic plates instead of our

patented copper. Cheap ceramic plates reduce humidity, dry out your sinuses and make your skin dry. With other heating sources, you'll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen. The advanced space-age EdenPURE ® also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Other heating sources heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated high and to the center of the room. And as you know, portable heaters only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EdenPURE®, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room. How can a person cut their heating bill with the EdenPURE®? First, the EdenPURE® uses less energy to create heat than many other sources, but that is just part of why it will cut a person’s heating bill. The EdenPURE® will heat a room in minutes. You will immediately notice the difference! Therefore, you can turn the heat down in your house to as low as 50 degrees,
but the room you are occupying, which has the EdenPURE ® , will be warm and comfortable. Your EdenPURE® easily moves from room to room. Using zone heating keeps you comfortable and reduces your heating bills. This can drasti-
cally cut heating bills; in some instances, the savings may be substantial. The EdenPURE® will pay for itself in weeks. It will keep a great deal of extra money in a user’s pocket. Because of today’s spiraling gas, oil, propane, and other energy costs, the EdenPURE® will provide even greater savings as time goes by. The EdenPURE® Personal Heater comes with a comprehensive three year warranty and a 60-day, no questions asked, satisfaction guarantee – EdenPURE® will even pay for
