Last year, he and his four teammates from Skagway, Alaska, worked egf through the night to perfect a 12-foot-high sculpture of an Inuit hunting a polar bear on the last iceberg at the North Pole. It paid off—Team Alaska won the People’s Choice Award for their effort. (Other winners included Canada’s giant head of a geisha and Mexico’s Aztec altar.) This Tuesday, Lucchetti’s team will be at it again, competing against 15 other groups from around the world in the 21st Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championship. Each squad will have 65 hours to turn a 10 x 10 x 12–foot block of snow into art with nothing but a set of hand tools. Lucchetti plans to carve “Alaska Stories,” a large book with Jack London’s White Fang jumping out of the pages. Manner Up! Your guide to modern etiquette
Q. My husband has been texting nonstop with a female coworker. He insists it’s just business, but it really bothers me. How can I get him to stop?
LOW COOKER
—Nancy F., Salt Lake City, Utah
A: Let hubby know that his texting feels both secretive and intrusive of your time together. Ask him how he’d react if you were constantly pecking out notes to a guy he didn’t know. Then suggest this agreement: If it’s urgent, he can talk to his co-worker on the phone—in front of you. But no more private texting. If he continues to click away during family time, there may be a larger problem. The question looming is whether he’s being honest with you. Ask yourself: Does he run an organ-donation bank? No? Then what is so critical that it can’t wait a few hours? There can be periods when contact after-hours is necessary because of an emergency. But if texting with this woman is a constant assault on your husband’s time at home, there’s something wrong. You’re going to have to make him come clean about the real reason for it. —Judith Newman Send your questions to Parade.com/mannerup Visit us at PARADE.COM

COPD?
Find out if ADVAIR® can help you breathe better and take center stage in your own life.
by Marilyn vos Savant Here’s a real-life problem: My friend Rick and his partner, Dave, did a flooring job together. They agreed to split the profits: 40% for Rick and 60% for Dave, as the latter had more working knowledge. But Dave had to leave early on some days, so Rick ended up working nine hours more than he did. They worked together for 30 hours, so the job took 39 hours to complete. Their net profit was $6,000. How much should each receive? —Jim Burr, Sunland-Tujunga, Calif.
the job took a total of 69 man-hours. That’s about $86.96 of profit hourly. For the hours the men worked together, which is what they had intended, I would divide the profit according to their agreement. So for 30 hours, Rick would get $69.57 hourly (40% of the $173.92 for two man-hours) and Dave would get $104.35 hourly (60% of $173.92). For the hours Rick worked alone, I think he should receive the profit for one man-hour. So for nine hours, Rick would get $86.96. He could offer Dave 20%, the cut he granted him when they worked together, but if I were Dave, I’d decline such an offer. In sum, Rick would earn $2,869.50 (about $2,087 for 30 hours plus $782.50 for the nine hours), and Dave would earn $3,130.50 (for the 30 hours he worked with Rick). • if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins. Ask your doctor if you are not sure. BRIEF SUMMARY This summary does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. See full Prescribing Information for complete product information. What is the most important information I should know about ADVAIR DISKUS? ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects, including: 1. People with asthma who take long-acting beta 2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) medicines, such as salmeterol (one of the medicines in ADVAIR DISKUS), have an increased risk of death from asthma problems. It is not known whether fluticasone propionate, the other medicine in ADVAIR DISKUS, reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with salmeterol. • Call your healthcare provider if breathing problems worsen over time while using ADVAIR DISKUS. You may need different treatment. • Get emergency medical care if: - breathing problems worsen quickly and - you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it does not relieve your breathing problems. 2. ADVAIR DISKUS should be used only if your healthcare provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as inhaled corticosteroids. 3. When your asthma is well controlled, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking ADVAIR DISKUS. Your healthcare provider will decide if you can stop ADVAIR DISKUS without loss of asthma control. Your healthcare provider may prescribe a different asthma control medicine for you, such as an inhaled corticosteroid. 4. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may have an increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma problems. What is ADVAIR DISKUS? • ADVAIR DISKUS combines an inhaled corticosteroid medicine, fluticasone propionate (the same medicine found in FLOVENT®), and a LABA medicine, salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT®). - Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease inflammation in the lungs. Inflammation in the lungs can lead to asthma symptoms. - LABA medicines are used in people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). LABA medicines help the muscles around the airways in your lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your breathing and cause death if not treated right away. • ADVAIR DISKUS is used for asthma and COPD as follows: Asthma ADVAIR DISKUS is used to control symptoms of asthma and to prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and children aged 4 years and older. ADVAIR DISKUS contains salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT). LABA medicines, such as salmeterol, increase the risk of death from asthma problems. ADVAIR DISKUS is not for adults and children with asthma who: - are well controlled with another asthma control medicine, such as a low to medium dose of an inhaled corticosteroid medicine - have sudden asthma symptoms. COPD COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is used long term, 2 times each day to help improve lung function for better breathing in adults with COPD. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 has been shown to decrease the number of flare-ups and worsening of COPD symptoms (exacerbations).

Sela Ward has traveled the world, but the “sweetness of life” in her hometown of Meridian keeps drawing her back by Dotson Rader When I was a child, I felt I was living in a small room and there was this big world out there just waiting for me,” Sela Ward says. “I had such a thirst for life. I wanted that big world.” She pauses thoughtfully. “Sometimes you don’t know what you have until you leave it.” Sitting inside a Manhattan hotel suite, the picture of cosmopolitan chic in a black cashmere mockturtleneck sweater and black wool slacks, Ward, 54, is reminiscing about the dreams that took her away from Mississippi at 18—and the qualities of life there that lured her back. “I used to be very attached to my career in terms of my identity,” says the Emmy-winning actress, who gained fame on the series Sisters and Once and Again and now co-stars on CBS’ CSI: NY. “But it was meaningless. The sweetness of life is elsewhere. That’s the lesson I’ve learned in Meridian.” Ward’s hometown (population just under 40,000) is in the hill country, some 90 miles east of Jackson. “Meridian was once the rail crossroads of the South,” she says. “You had to go through there to get just about anywhere else. spent outdoors. “Nature nurtured me,” she says. “We were outside until dark every day, cane-pole fishing in the lake, playing flag football in the field. The lake had a dam and spillway, like a waterfall, and I’d sit underneath it, water cascading over me. Or I’d walk among the trees, the sun dappling through the leaves. I felt a sense of connection, peace. It was beautiful.” At home, however, things weren’t always so peaceful. “My father was a wonderful man—until he drank,” she confides. “I knew the moment that ice went in his glass he F would become a different January 23, 2011 • 11

person, an angry drunk. It was confusing to me, because sober he was very lovable. The atmosphere was tense, heavy. I didn’t understand that he was an alcoholic. In the South you just don’t talk about those things.” Ward, who took voice lessons to expunge her Southern accent after she set her sights on acting, lapses into a Mississippi drawl when she talks about her family. “Mama said to me on her hospital deathbed, ‘I think maybe I married the

wrong man,’ ” she recalls. “I looked at her and said, ‘Mama, are you just now figuring that out?’ She was a strong woman, but she wasn’t strong enough to leave Daddy. Probably because she feared the unknown. Divorce was still shameful. She had four kids—she was overwhelmed. And, you know, she just really loved him.” Ward’s mother succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2002. “After Mama died,” Ward adds, “Daddy stopped drinking. He beat the disease, and during the last chapter of his life, he was really there.” Her father passed away in 2009. The Meridian Little Theatre loomed large in Ward’s childhood—but not for the reason one might think. At 12, she was cast in a production of The King and I, and the experience almost turned her off forever from performing. “I can’t sing a note,” Ward recalls, laughing, “but the director thought I was cute enough to be a lady-in-waiting, and I got the part. In rehearsals the woman standing next to me said, ‘Someone is singing dreadfully off-key!’ and so I just mouthed the words. At that point, any idea of acting went out the window.” Her teenage years were spent at a private school, Lamar, and she joined a junior sorority. She also had her first kiss, at a spin-the-bottle party, and her first big crush. “In high school, girls would drive by boys’ houses,” Ward recalls. “One day, Eric Gunn was out in front washing his car. We drove by at a snail’s pace, and I was totally caught looking. He and I went out a couple of times. Then a continued on page 20

It is not known whether budesonide, the other medicine in SYMBICORT, reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with formoterol. SYMBICORT should be used only if your healthcare provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as an inhaled corticosteroid, or that your asthma is severe enough to begin treatment with SYMBICORT. While taking SYMBICORT, never use another medicine containing a LABA for any reason. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if any of your other medicines are LABA medicines, as using too much LABA may cause chest pain, increase in blood pressure, fast and irregular heartbeat, headache, tremor, and nervousness.
Patients taking SYMBICORT • may experience serious allergic reactions including rash, hives, swelling of the face, mouth and tongue, and breathing problems. • may have a higher chance of infection. Meditation 101 meditation is not just for swamis (or Julia Roberts, above). Mainstream medicine is finding that even brief stints of sitting quietly and thinking about your breath can improve concentration, lower stress, and maybe even reduce your risk of disease. In a new study from the University of North Carolina, people who meditated for 20 minutes a day performed 10 times better than their nonmeditating peers on a test that measured focus. Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation, offers these easy steps for beginners.

Mothers Without Borders
I needed my mom, and my daughter needed me; somehow, we bridged the distance
Sandra, is tiny but fierce, 5 feet and 100 pounds of red hair, wry humor, and steely will—like Nietzsche wrapped in Susan Sarandon. She was living in Switzerland when she was hit by a car, fracturing both legs, and was still recovering as my first pregnancy took a tragic turn. One of my twins, a boy we’d named Ames, died in utero, and I was put on bed rest to stave off pre-term labor and save his sister. (It was not our best winter.) Though wheelchairbound and unable to fly, my mother wasn’t about to let 4,500 miles keep her from coming to my aid. While I lay on my couch at home in St. Paul, Minn., and later in a hospital bed, she orchestrated a relief effort that provided by proxy the comfort she couldn’t give in person—a rotating crop of friends and family to keep me in companionship, distraction, and food. I gave birth to my daughter, Simone, on Feb. 8, 2008—15 weeks early. She weighed 1 lb, 11 oz, with fingers as slender as the tines of a salad fork. As I kept vigil in the neonatal intensive-care unit, my mother and I exchanged a nearconstant stream of e-mail messages. Hers were filled with solace, worry, and admonishments to eat. And each evening one of her henchmen would appear at the hospital with

dinner for me and my husband. I was grateful for her transatlantic ministrations, and now I understood them in a way I hadn’t before. Like me, she was watching her daughter endure pain she’d have done anything to alleviate. Her maternal instinct was frustrated by distance; mine by the plexiglass of the incubator separating me from my child. Simone lay covered in wires and was often too fragile to be touched for more than a moment. On the worst days, I stood by helplessly as alarms sounded and my tiny baby
arched her back in distress. I clung to what little I could do. I cupped Simone’s feet through the doors of her incubator. I read to her; I sang. I pumped every few hours, grimly satisfied by the knowledge that though she was fed through a tube, it was my milk doing the nourishing, and I knew the relief it must have given my mother to take care of my meals. I learned early on what all parents come to know: We face barriers in caring for our children. You can’t always be at the playground to stop a fall, or keep them from discovering that not everybody likes them. If all goes well, your kids will grow up and move out, phone calls will dwindle for a while, and parenting will be done
nd in the end, most
barriers are rendered irrelevant. By Jul y, Simone had been home for six weeks, slender tubes from her nose to an oxygen tank her only remaining tethers. My mother was visiting, and she’d climbed the three flights to my apartment without a crutch. That afternoon, almost six months to the day after I’d dialed to tell her of Ames’ death, she was with me for another call—from a nurse, with test results showing my daughter was ready to breathe on her own. I burst into tears and grabbed for the tubes encircling Simone’s cheeks, and my mother helped remove the tape securing them. We gaped at my baby’s face, fully visible for the first time. “Free! Free at last!” we whooped as my mother swung Simone into her arms. The three of us danced through the halls, without wires or plexiglass or oceans between us, put back together so neatly you’d never guess we’d been broken at all. Alexa Stevenson is the author of the memoir Half Baked, about her daughter’s first year. Follow Simone’s progress from preemie to toddler in a slideshow at Parade.com/stevenson

BONIVA, a bisphosphonate, is a prescription medicine used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, characterized by weakening of the bone. Taken once a month in tablet form, BONIVA may stop and reverse bone loss in most women. It has been clinically proven to help build and maintain bone density, which can help reduce fractures.
What is the most important information about BONIVA? BONIVA may cause serious problems in the stomach and the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach) such as trouble swallowing, heartburn, and ulcers. Who should not take BONIVA?

Make sure your baking soda and powder haven‘t expired—old leaveners lose their rising power. And sniff your spices. If they don’t have a lot of fragrance, neither will whatever it is you‘re making.

Don’t be a slave to the timer. Check on your treat before the time’s up, and don’t be afraid to let it bake a little longer if necessary. Time is only one clue to doneness—color and texture are important, too.

About 15 years ago, it was still illegal for shops to be open on Sundays in Britain—basically only petrol stations could be. So throughout my childhood, Sundays were quiet. Imagine telling your kids today: “Phones off. Computers off. TV off.” Everyone would say, “Are you crazy?” But it forced us to get to know each other. Now on Sundays I like to make what I call “fast/slow dishes”: stuff you can get into a pan in five minutes—like chicken, short ribs, shins of beef— and then slow-cook. Let the oven do the work while I chase the kids. I have four! It’s anarchy in the house, you know.
P To check if your chicken breasts are cooked through, stick a sharp knife into the thickest part. If the juices run clear (not bloody), you’re good.

She laughs. “What a thing to say! Well, I wasn’t ready to marry Bob or anyone else. I needed to experience a lot of life first.” Upon graduation in 1977, Ward went to New York (“It spoke to me—life on steroids,” she says), where she worked in advertising, modeled, and took acting classes. In 1983 she headed on to Los Angeles and was immediately cast in Blake Edwards’ The Man Who Loved Women. She discovered that what she loved was performing. The personal side of her life fell into place years later, when, after relationships with actors Richard Dean Anderson and Peter Weller, she met entrepreneur Howard Sherman on a blind date in 1991. “You know what Howard has that the others didn’t?” she asks. “He listened. He wanted to know me. I felt cherished. I was used to anger and chaos with men, but Howard is very gentle—kind, funny, even-keeled. Even before we kissed, and he’s a great kisser, he had me.” Finding the right partner made Ward realize how deeply she yearned to go home, and within a month of marrying in 1992, the couple began looking for property in Meridian. “I wanted my children to have a life that is authentic, not one that’s about striving for material things,” she says. Today she and Sherman have a son, 16-year-old Austin, and a daughter, 12-year-old Anabella, and though they live mainly in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles, the family spends summers and holidays at Honeysuckle Farms, their 500-acre Mississippi retreat just outside the Meridian city limits. The first structure they built there is called the Rose Cottage, and Ward’s parents and an uncle are buried on the hill behind it. The farm is clearly where her heart lies, and Ward wants to connect the next generation to the place as well. “I’m trying to teach my children the lessons I learned in Meridian—genuineness, belonging, caring about others,” she says. “Treat people as valuable in themselves, not for what they can do for you.” For her part, Ward found that there was much she could do to give back to her hometown. She has helped raise money to restore Meridian’s 19thcentury Grand Opera House, a building long boarded up that had “obsessed” her as a child. “In third grade I saw a picture of it in its heyday,” she says. “All these amazing people, like Gershwin,
signed the dressing-room wall there. Now it’s used as a concert hall.” She has also been instrumental in helping to preserve Weidmann’s restaurant, which dates from 1870. The inside was changed, sadly, but the building remains. “I wanted to save Weidmann’s more than anything,” See photos of Sela Ward she says. “It was the heart and soul of through the years, from that town, the place you’d go for SunSouthern belle to awardday lunch and see everybody.” winning actress, at Parade Most important, she has helped .com/ward found and support Meridian’s Hope
Village for Children, which provides shelter and care for neglected, abused, and abandoned children (go to hopevillagems.org for more information). “These kids have bounced from one foster home to another,” she says. “Some have never had a birthday party, never slept in a bed. It’s outrageous! At Hope Village, they have a sense of belonging. They feel safe, valued.” And that’s exactly how Meridian makes Ward feel. “I’ve gone back to the place I once wanted to leave behind,” she says. “I understand it now. My journey has been a journey home.”
