Though she lost that fight, she won a meeting with Soderbergh and the lead role in his latest film, Haywire. “It was amazing,” says Carano, who hopes to continue acting, about shooting the thriller. “I got my adrenaline fix without having to actually hurt anyone.” Go to Parade .com/carano for photos of the fighting beauty kicking butt on the set. I put that on a lot of mixtapes for girlfriends.
“I DON’T HAVE ANY CRAZY DEEP, DARK SECRETS. I GUESS I DON’T HAVE A TORTURED SOUL.”
You and your wife, actress Dagmara Dominczyk, have two sons, ages 2 and 5. Are they musical? Just yesterday my littlest one was singing singin a song, and he went ov over to the piano to play al along. Not the right keys—he keys—he’s no boy genius—but he sang and played in rhyth rhythm. The older one loves musi music too, but he’s shyer abo about it. What music do they like? They will say what they don’tt like more m than what they t like, and usua usually that’s determined by deter the girls, g who love Justin Bie Bieber. They will say, “Oooo “Oooo, Daddy, I don’t like Justi Justin Bieber”— or “Beaver,” as they say. But we’ll listen to songs, and I’ll point ou out voices to them. My 55-year-old knows Elvis Elvis’s voice. What are yyour Sundays llike? They’re al all about the family. I’m u usually con-

I grew up on one, and my kids know what to do [for safety]. I run a tight ship because I lost a tooth on a trampoline. My brothers and I used to settle our battles there—we’d pretend we were like the WWF [World Wrestling Federation]. What makes you angry? I don’t like being lied to. If I’m not going to get a part, tell me why. On A Gifted Man, your character’s ex-wife returns as a ghost. Do you believe in the supernatural? I’ve never had any weird experiences, but I’m certainly open to it. I don’t feel like life ends here, I guess.

The country superstar’s latest was mired in a contract dispute for more than a year, but it’s finally out— and it was well worth the wait. Sweet, mid-tempo tracks like “The One” play up McGraw’s vibrant Louisiana twang, while introspective ballads like “Only Human,” featuring pop/R&B singer Ne-Yo, showcase his musical depth and range.
What’s something people don’t know about you? I love to go to casinos with my wife. I play poker, and she’s an old-fashioned slot queen. She even has a visor. How’s your poker face? It’s okay. Inevitably somebody will go, “You’re an actor, I know who you are. ...” Usually they think if I’m a good actor, then I’m a good bluffer. Or they think I’m crazy rich and will go all in, when I’m a pretty conservative player. One guy was like, “You were in The Fast and the Furious.” And I said, “No, that’s Paul Walker.” He went away for a few minutes and came back and said, “I’ve got it—Into the Blue.” And I was like, “Still Paul Walker ...”

Manner Up! Ready to try to quit smoking? Meet another option.
Modern etiquette made easy
Q: My buddy often drinks too much when he comes over. The last time he did, we got in a fight when I asked for his car keys before he left. How can we avoid having that argument again? —Name withheld, Albuquerque, N.M.
A: You have two choices: Either don’t serve liquor when he visits or talk to him ahead of time (not when he’s already sloshing around your living room). Tell him he means a lot to you. Tell him you couldn’t live with yourself if anything happened to him on your watch, or to someone else because of him. (Not to mention the fact that if he’s underage, you could be thrown in jail, and if he’s an adult you could be sued.) Tell him it’s a house rule: No one gets behind the wheel after drinking. Then give him the website for the National Directory of Designated Driver Services: drinkinganddriving.org /tools/services.html. It provides phone numbers to call in almost every state when you need a lift home. Pretty nifty, right? It could save your friendship; more important, it could save lives. —Judith Newman Send your questions to Parade.com/mannerup
Trying to quit smoking but need some help? Talk to your doctor to see if NICOTROL Inhaler—the inhaled prescription nicotine replacement therapy—may be right for you. NICOTROL Inhaler, when used as part of a comprehensive behavioral smoking cessation program, may help you quit smoking by reducing your urge to smoke.1
For more information on NICOTROL Inhaler, visit www.Nicotrol.com/2012 Indication NICOTROL Inhaler is indicated as an aid to smoking cessation for the relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. It is available only by prescription and is recommended for use as part of a comprehensive behavioral smoking cessation program. Important Safety Information Do not use the NICOTROL Inhaler if you are hypersensitive or allergic to nicotine, menthol, or to any ingredient in the product. If you have cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, or bronchospastic diseases including asthma or chronic pulmonary disease, talk to your doctor about using the NICOTROL Inhaler. If you are under a doctor’s care for any condition, you should first discuss with your doctor the potential risks of using this product. You should stop smoking completely before using the NICOTROL Inhaler. You should not smoke or use other nicotine-containing products while under treatment with the NICOTROL Inhaler. Because nicotine is addictive, it is possible to become dependent on the NICOTROL Inhaler. It is important to use it only for as long as needed to overcome your smoking habit. The safety of treatment with the NICOTROL Inhaler for periods longer than 6 months has not been established, and such use is not recommended.
A special note about children and pets: The NICOTROL Inhaler can cause serious illness or be fatal in children and pets— even in very small amounts. If a child chews on or swallows new or used NICOTROL Inhaler cartridges, immediately call a doctor or call your regional poison center. The specific effects of the NICOTROL Inhaler treatment on fetal development and nursing infants are unknown. Therefore, pregnant and nursing smokers should be encouraged to attempt cessation using educational and behavioral interventions before using pharmacological approaches. You are likely to experience mild irritation of the mouth or throat, or cough when you first use the NICOTROL Inhaler. In clinical trials, the frequency of mouth or throat irritation, or coughing declined with continued use. The most common nicotine-related side effect was upset stomach. Other nicotine-related side effects were nausea, diarrhea, and hiccup. Smoking-related side effects included chest discomfort, bronchitis, and high blood pressure. It is important to tell your doctor about any other medications you may be taking because they may need dosage adjustment. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

We are three families with two kids each, and we want to carpool to school. Two families have cars that can fit all six kids; one family’s car can carry only four kids. How can we divide driving duties? —Elizabeth Thompson, Chicago
Sunshine® Cheez-It® Barbecue Mix
Here’s one solution. Call the large-car families #1 and #2; the regular-car family is #3. On day one, family #1 drives all six kids. Day two: Family #3 drives its own kids plus #1’s kids, and family #2 takes its kids alone. Day three: Family #2 drives all six kids. Day four: Family #3 drives its own kids plus #2’s kids, and family #1 takes its kids alone. Then repeat. In all, each family drives half the time. Families #1 and #2 drive two days in a row, followed by two days off. Family #3 drives on one day, then is off the next. Winter is here, and an icy, snowy drive on the way home from work is very stressful. I have two choices: a straight shot on a 20-mile city street with traffic lights, and a freeway with no intersections for out-of-control drivers to plow through. Which do you think is safest? —Margaret Sartori, Livonia, Mich.
I vote for the city streets, despite the fender benders. Freeways involve higher speeds, less lighting, tired drivers, and monster trucks. When accidents happen, they’re worse, and bad road conditions make them more likely. To ask a question, visit Parade.com/askmarilyn

n just seven days, more than 100 million of us will gather with Buds and brats, foam koozies and foam fingers, to watch Super Bowl XLVI (NBC, 6:30 p.m. ET) in homes across the country. And whether you’re hosting a party (see our tips on these pages) or attending one, the event is sure to be as behemoth a bash as ever. How the Super Bowl party became such a phenomenon has more possible explanations than Charles Haley has championship rings (he won a record five as a player). Some theorize the game’s midwinter timing plays a big role. “People have gone through the holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s,” says Robert Thompson, a professor of popular culture at Syracuse University in New York. “By the time the Super Bowl arrives, we’ve broken our resolutions and we’re ready for a party.” Another explanation: the success of the NFL’s halftime show and, as Thompson calls it, “the film festival that Madison Avenue puts on” to make the game an entertainment extravaganza for every viewer, fan or no. But perhaps there’s a more meaningful reason we come together on this Sunday each year. With so much that divides us politically and culturally, and so much that isolates us technologically, celebrating the Super Bowl has become a joyous communal rite. As Mike Mulvihill, senior vice president of programming and research at Fox Sports, says, “The Super Bowl stands as one of the few things, and maybe the only thing, that brings people together.” So break out the cheese dip and the chicken wings, America. It’s time to come in from the cold. —Hilary Sterne
Chow Down!
What does America eat on Super Bowl Sunday? Fill your buffet with these favorites. By Jane and Michael Stern
1
Anchor Bar’s Buffalo Wings Not so long ago, chicken wings were a throwaway part, fit for soup. But in 1964, Teressa Bellissimo of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, N.Y., changed all that. One night, faced with a group of hungry men—friends of her son—she deep-fried wings, tossed them with hot sauce, and served them with celery and bluecheese dressing. The men devoured them, the dish was added to the menu, and Buffalo restaurants soon created rival versions. The wings went national in the early ’90s, as the Buffalo Bills
were making four back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. On game day, the Anchor Bar will sell, literally, tons of wings. (Two tons!)
2
Tucson’s Jalapeño Poppers The food trucks of Tucson, Ariz., are famous for their Sonoran hot dogs, garnished with pinto beans, tomatoes, onions, mustard, hot sauce, and mayonnaise. But one side dish is just as stellar: the bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers. They became popular in the ’90s as Americans began seeking out spicier cuisine.
3
Amighetti’s Submarine Sandwich There are infinite regional names for the overstuffed sandwich on brawny bread: sub, hero, hoagie, po’ boy, zep ... And infinite variations in dressing them. In the Delaware Valley, it’s oil and vinegar. In New Orleans, Creole mustard is No. 1. At the original Amighetti’s in St. Louis, you’ll get its “special sauce”— creamy with a kick. Closed on Sundays, Amighetti’s makes an exception for the Super Bowl. Serve the sauce on the side—spread it right before the coin toss. continued on page 13

Ask the doctor about ARICEPT 23 mg for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. The highest approved dose of ARICEPT. You’ve shared so much with your loved one through the years. While you’re realistic about the nature of Alzheimer’s, as their caregiver, you want to do what you can. If your loved one is taking ARICEPT (donepezil HCl)10 mg, ask the doctor if ARICEPT 23 mg may help. ARICEPT 23 mg was compared to ARICEPT 10 mg in a large clinical study of patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. ARICEPT 23 mg showed improvement over ARICEPT 10 mg on mental function, though it did not show improvement on overall patient functioning. In the study, more people who took ARICEPT 23 mg experienced increased side effects. It’s important to remember that while ARICEPT may treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, it is not a cure. All patients with Alzheimer’s disease will get worse over time, even if they take ARICEPT 23 mg.
INDICATION AND DOSING ARICEPT® (donepezil HCl) is a prescription medicine to treat mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer’s disease. Before starting on ARICEPT 23 mg/day, patients should be on ARICEPT 10 mg/day for at least 3 months. The starting dose of ARICEPT is 5 mg/day and can be increased to 10 mg/day after 4–6 weeks. Please take ARICEPT as prescribed by the doctor.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ARICEPT is not for everyone, including people who are allergic to any ingredients in ARICEPT or medicines that contain piperidines.
drugs (NSAIDs), should tell their doctor because serious stomach problems, such as bleeding, may get worse. In a study, more side effects were seen with ARICEPT 23 mg than with ARICEPT 10 mg. Many more people taking ARICEPT 23 mg experienced nausea and vomiting than those taking ARICEPT 10 mg. These side effects may get better after the patient takes ARICEPT for a while. Other side effects that were seen more often with ARICEPT 23 mg were stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and weight loss. People of lower weight (less than 121 lbs) may have increased nausea, vomiting, and weight loss when taking ARICEPT 23 mg.
Tell the doctor if your loved one takes nonprescription or prescription medicines, including those used to treat Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease; anticholinergic medicines, such as allergy or cold medicine; medicines to treat bladder or bowel spasms; or certain asthma medicines.
Other side effects of ARICEPT may include diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, vomiting, or muscle cramps. Some people may feel tired or may have loss of appetite.
ARICEPT may cause slow heartbeat and fainting. This happens more often in people with heart problems. Call the doctor right away if the patient faints while taking ARICEPT. People may also have seizures while taking ARICEPT. They may also have difficulty passing urine. Lung problems, including asthma, may worsen with the use of ARICEPT. Tell the doctor that the patient takes ARICEPT before they have any procedure that may require anesthesia, including dental and medical procedures or surgery.

The Blue Willow Inn’s Deviled Eggs These sunny ovals are so treasured in the South—no church supper or holiday party is complete without them—that deviled egg plates are prized family heirlooms. The Fort’s Guacamole The 2012 Bowl will take place at Indianapolis’s Lucas Oil Stadium. If you scooped all the guacamole to be made next Sunday into that venue, it would fill it from end zone to end zone, more than 12 feet deep. No one knows the dip’s exact origins, but the late Sam Arnold of the Fort restaurant near Denver surmised that a cook accidentally dropped avocado into salsa and realized the combo was irresistible. Arnold, a culinary showman who claimed he taught Julia Child how to open a champagne bottle with a tomahawk, was firmly against adding garlic.

Camp Washington’s 5-Way Chili In the U.S., your choice of chili—Beans or beanless? Thick or thin? Ground meat or chunks?—can be as contentious a topic as your favorite NFL team. Cincinnati residents take pride in their Bengals—and their chili. Created by Greek immigrants, it’s called 5-way for its quintuple layers: spaghetti,
spicy meat sauce, beans, cheese, and onions. The version served at Cincinnati’s Camp Washington Chili has been dubbed “America’s classic.”

Pico’s Nachos As the story goes, in 1943 a group of U.S. Army wives went to a restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico, for a meal. Because the larder had dwindled to tortillas and cheese, the frantic maître d’—nicknamed Nacho—heated the tortillas, broke them up, melted cheese on top, and added sliced jalapeño peppers. His creation was called Nacho’s Especiales. While the dish can be
that simple, you’ll find a hearty rendition at Pico’s Mex-Mex Restaurant in Houston, where it’s crowned with cochinita pibil, or achiote-marinated pork baked in banana leaves.

Tomato Jam’s Pimiento Cheese Pimiento cheese is a utility player—it can be a spread for crackers, a sandwich filling, a burger topping, or a veggie dip. Its basic components are cheddar, peppers, and mayo. Tomato Jam, a café in Asheville, N.C., uses fireroasted peppers and green olives in theirs. The owner serves it on nachos for his own Super Bowl parties.

Harry Caray’s Meatballs It’s no surprise that Chicago is a sports-mad city—it boasts teams from all five major pro sports. The Game-Is-As-Important-As-AnOrgan-Transplant Guy This guest is as visible as a ref—he’s the one pacing, screaming, and exhorting the gods to favor his team. STRATEGY: Sadly, there’s little you can do. But take comfort in the fact that his behavior will give attendees something to gossip about on the way home.
The Tireless Talker This partygoer sincerely believes that his or her clever and constant commentary is enhancing the evening, but it’s only enraging the people who care about the game. STRATEGY: Give gabbers a space with their own TV, then watch them face off in another brutal sport: competing for listeners. The Nacho-Averse Since game-day fare tends to fall into the “heart-attack-on-a-plate” category, you’ll inevitably have guests with more delicate sensibilities and stomachs. STRATEGY: You needn’t offer up a whole healthy buffet, just one of these: a cheese plate with crackers, veggies with dip or hummus, or a fruit salad. Sky Masterson This guy is on the phone with his bookie nonstop, wagering on the coin toss and number of turnovers and songs sung at halftime—i.e., everything. STRATEGY: Create a $1 betting pool so every guest has a stake in the game. The grid with 100 squares is an easy way to play (find one at Parade.com/superbowl).

FOUR RULES FOR A FOOLPROOF TIME
Activities, crafts, and more to keep your party fumble free By Hollace Schmidt
1
Give guests a choice of party zones. Create two viewing areas, one for those who want to see every play and one for the chatters and snackers. Joe Trippi, a police lieutenant (and a Buffalo Bills supporter) from Great Falls, Va., has a 52-inch flat-screen in his basement for true football fans, and puts a TV in the kitchen for less serious watchers.
2
Provide activities for young partygoers. Jodi Fagert, a nurse, Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and mother of a 6-year-old, sets up a children’s room at her Oregon home. She puts out boxes of dress-up clothes and toy swords— plus clear juices that won’t leave stains— and hires a babysitter to supervise. Crafts can also keep kids busy and happy. 3
Offer extra entertainment to the grown-ups. Since the game can sometimes be dull, Shelly Everett and Rob Kreimes of Sandusky, Ohio, turned their shindig into the “SOUPer Bowl.” Guests bring pots of soup, and people taste them and vote. And the winner scores— a ladle! Also fun: Super Bowl bingo, where the squares are filled with showtime sights, such as a field goal or a car commercial. (Get 18 downloadable cards at Parade .com/superbowl.)
4
Prepare for the uninvited. Although Fagert does a pregame headcount, she’s learned to get food and drink for an additional 15 drop-ins. Andrew Schrage of Chicago, a New England Patriots loyalist, buys extra frozen appetizers that he can heat up if his spread is depleted.

The Over-Imbiber The big game evokes big emotions, which can mean lots of drinking. Fans will be mourning the season’s end; their spouses will be relieved (or not) about getting their mates back. STRATEGY: Start the party at 5 p.m., not noon, so there’s less time to indulge. By 9 p.m., cut off the booze and bring out the coffee.

BE YOUR OWN REFEREE
Don’t let guests’ unsportsmanlike conduct spoil all the fun. Here’s how to tackle five tough characters. By Judith Newman
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Beer is a safe bet— just be careful not to step out-of-bounds. “Respect regional loyalties,” says Marjorie Ingall, a veteran host in New York City whose husband is from Milwaukee. “Don’t get Packers fans St. Louis beer.” Other ideas: anything that celebrates your friend’s team or the game, like a cake in team colors, helmet-shaped coasters, or a “Football Man Candle,” with a dirt and leather scent (at perpetualkid.com). But one of the best gifts is free: staying to clean up afterward. —J.N.

Then he showed up. This was war. The first time I noticed the I bought a new feeder that squirrel, he was clinging to the promised to be squirrel-proof— top of the feeder and swaying like which proved to be a big, fat lie.
FAT AND HAPPY
Thanks to my 30-pound bags of birdseed, Floyd has grown to the size of a bear cub.
Next, I posted a photo of the squirrel on Facebook and asked for advice on how to thwart Floyd’s thieving ways. “You named him?” Sherrod said. “Don’t you have work to do?” I replied. I was seeing more of this squirrel than any of our children. Of course I named him. You learn a lot about people when you ask them how to get rid of a squirrel. Violence comes up. A lot. When I emailed a birder friend, she suggested I buy a feeder that flings squirrels into the air whenever they touch the perch. She included a link to a demonstration video. I clicked “play” and watched in horror as one squirrel after another was hurled through the air, each one emitting an animated, high-pitched “whoooaaa.” The voice may have been fake, but by then I was imagining my apologies to Floyd’s widow. I may have been losing perspective. Three 30-pound bags of birdseed later, Floyd has grown to the size of a bear cub. As a result, his success rate has plummeted. About 50 percent of the time, he leaps for the pole only to slide to the ground with a thud. Still, he never stops trying, and, by golly, I admire that. “Do you think I should move the swing over to make it easier for him?” I said last weekend to my husband, who immediately got that look on his face again. “Ho, ho, ho, kidding,” I said. “I’m kidding.” Maybe I am.
