Though most heart attacks don’t strike until decades later, the latest research shows that cholesterol and other gunk can start building up in kids’ arteries as early as age 2. As a result, a National Institutes of Health panel advised doctors to begin screening children ages 9 to 11 for high cholesterol and other risk factors for heart disease. Some doctors worry that cholesterollowering statins

like Lipitor, which haven’t been extensively studied in youngsters, will be prescribed widely to kids. But that’s unlikely, says Stephen R. Daniels, M.D., a University of Colorado pediatrician who led the panel. Daniels estimates that less than 1 percent of kids with elevated bad cholesterol will have levels high enough to require drugs: 190 mg/dL or greater (or at least 160 mg/dL if there’s also a

family history of heart disease or other risk factor, like obesity). The prescription for the other 99 percent? Eat right and exercise. If your child’s number is high and the doctor suggests a statin, get a second opinion from a specialist like a pediatric cardiologist, says Claire McCarthy, M.D., of Children’s Hospital Boston. “That doctor can make sure treatment is truly necessary based on such factors as your family medical history or whether your child has been diagnosed with other conditions such as diabetes,” McCarthy says.

While you’re realistic about the nature of Alzheimer’s, as their caregiver, you want to do what you can. If your loved one is taking ARICEPT (donepezil HCl)10 mg, ask the doctor if ARICEPT 23 mg may help. ARICEPT 23 mg was compared to ARICEPT 10 mg in a large clinical study of patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. ARICEPT 23 mg showed improvement over ARICEPT 10 mg on mental function, though it did not show improvement on overall patient functioning. In the study, more people who took ARICEPT 23 mg experienced increased side effects. It’s important to remember that while ARICEPT may treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, it is not a cure. All patients with Alzheimer’s disease will get worse over time, even if they take ARICEPT 23 mg.

INDICATION AND DOSING ARICEPT® (donepezil HCl) is a prescription medicine to treat mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer’s disease. Before starting on ARICEPT 23 mg/day, patients should be on ARICEPT 10 mg/day for at least 3 months. The starting dose of ARICEPT is 5 mg/day and can be increased to 10 mg/day after 4–6 weeks. Please take ARICEPT as prescribed by the doctor.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ARICEPT is not for everyone, including people who are allergic to any ingredients in ARICEPT or medicines that contain piperidines. Tell the doctor if your loved one takes nonprescription or prescription medicines, including those used to treat Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease; anticholinergic medicines, such as allergy or cold medicine; medicines to treat bladder or bowel spasms; or certain asthma medicines. ARICEPT can be taken with or without food. • ARICEPT 23 mg tablets should be swallowed whole without the tablets being split, crushed or chewed.

• ARICEPT ODT melts on the tongue. The patient should drink some water after the tablet melts. • If you miss giving the patient a dose of ARICEPT, just wait. Give only the next dose at the usual time. Do not give 2 doses at the same time. • If ARICEPT is missed for 7 days or more, talk with the doctor before starting again. • If the patient takes too much ARICEPT at one time, call the doctor or poison control center, or go to the emergency room right away. Happiness Really Is a Warm Puppy

t’s 7 p.m. my husband

walks through the door and immediately drops to the floor, sitting crosslegged in the center hallway. “Franklin!” he yells. “Franklin! C’mere, boy!” Our 5-month-old puppy rounds the corner like a cartoon rabbit and barrels toward Sherrod with no strategy for stopping. He slides until he crashes into the open arms of my 59-year-old husband, who is laughing so hard his eyes grow sparkly wet. “How’s my boy?” he asks, ruffling Franklin’s ears as he tumbles backward with the pup on his chest. “How’s my boy, huh?” Franklin erupts into a series of howls as he makes a rumpled mess of Sherrod’s dress shirt. “Ohhh, buddy,” Sherrod says. “We’re happy to see Daddy, aren’t we? Yes, we are, yes, we are.” I clear my throat. Sherrod looks up, brieﬂy, and smiles. “Oh, hi, honey,” he says, scratching Franklin’s tummy. “We’re glad to see Mommy, aren’t we, buddy?” Three months ago, we adopted 9-week-old Franklin from an animal rescue group. On the drive to pick him up, my husband insisted on boundaries. No. 1: “I’m not his daddy,” he said. “You’re not his mommy.” Second rule: No sleeping on our bed. I’m reminded of that one every time Franklin crawls onto my pillow and slips his

Chicken Parmesan ½ cup all-purpose ﬂour 8 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, pounded to uniform thinness ½ cup olive oil 2 Tbsp butter 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium onion, chopped 3 ∕4 cup wine (white or red) 3 (14.5-oz) cans crushed tomatoes 2 Tbsp sugar 1 ∕4 cup chopped fresh parsley, divided, plus more for garnish 1½ cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 lb thin linguine or other pasta, cooked al dente

1. Combine flour with salt and pepper to taste on a large plate. Sprinkle chicken breasts on both sides with salt and pepper, then dredge them in seasoned flour. Set aside. 2. Heat oil and butter in a skillet on medium-high. Fry chicken until golden, about 3 minutes per side. Remove from skillet; keep warm. Add garlic and onion to pan. Cook for 2 minutes. 3. Pour in wine and scrape skillet, getting flavorful bits off bottom. Cook for 3 minutes or until liquid is reduced by half.

4. Stir in tomatoes, sugar, and salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and cook for 30 minutes. Add 1∕8 cup parsley and 1 ∕2 cup Parmesan. 5. Arrange chicken on top of sauce; sprinkle remaining cheese over top. Cover skillet and simmer until cheese melts and chicken is hot. Sprinkle with 1∕8 cup parsley. Put pasta on plates; top with chicken, sauce, and parsley. SERVES: 8 | PER SERVING:

From our Oklahoma farm, it’s a 30-minute drive to the nearest grocery store—ﬁve miles down a gravel road to reach the highway, and then 15 miles beyond that. So I shop for food only every two or three weeks and try to keep a lot of staples on hand. I nearly always have the ingredients to make chicken Parmesan. My kids (Alex, 14; Paige, 12; Bryce, 9; and Todd, 7) are pretty picky, and it’s hard to ﬁnd a meal they all like. But one day, one of the kids ordered chicken Parmesan at a restaurant. The others loved it, so I came up with my own take. My kids and the man I’m lucky enough to have married like this dish because it’s hearty and delicious. It’s been inducted into my kitchen’s hall of fame.
