he kids from Glee had better watch out. In what’s being called the most expensive high school musical ever, scores of teenagers from Washington State hit the boards in Seattle this weekend to perform a rousing rendition of Oklahoma! With its eye-popping hydraulic sets—flying barn included—intricate choreography, symphony orchestra, and splashy costumes, the show gave “amateur” a whole new meaning. The Oklahoma! Project, a full-on production of the famous 1943 musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, was the brainchild of Bill Berry, producing director of Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. He had helped mount a professional version of the show that ran from Feb. 3 to March 4 (and shared a $2.5 million budget with the Oklahoma! Project). “We thought, why not do it with the kids, too? Oklahoma! is about forming a community and helping each other out. The act of putting on a show helps build those same skills.” Berry wanted the kids to learn more than just how to do the two-step

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SYMBICORT Important Safety Information About SYMBICORT for Asthma SYMBICORT contains formoterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). LABA medicines such as formoterol increase the risk of death from asthma problems. It is not known whether budesonide, the other medicine in SYMBICORT, reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with formoterol. SYMBICORT should be used only if your health care provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as an inhaled corticosteroid, or that your asthma is severe enough to begin treatment with SYMBICORT. If you are taking SYMBICORT, see your health care provider if your asthma does not improve or gets worse. It is important that your health care provider assess your asthma control on a regular basis. Your doctor will decide if it is possible for you to stop taking SYMBICORT and start taking a long-term asthma control medicine without loss of asthma control. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may have an increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma problems. SYMBICORT does not replace rescue inhalers for sudden asthma symptoms. Be sure to tell your health care provider about all your health conditions, including heart conditions or high blood pressure, and all medicines you may be taking. Some patients taking SYMBICORT may experience increased blood pressure, heart rate, or change in heart rhythm. Do not use SYMBICORT more often than prescribed. While taking SYMBICORT, never use another medicine containing a LABA for any reason. Ask your health care provider or pharmacist if any of your other medicines are LABA medicines, as using too much LABA may cause chest pain, increase in blood pressure, fast and irregular heartbeat, headache, tremor, and nervousness.
Patients taking SYMBICORT should call their health care provider or get emergency medical care: • if you experience serious allergic reactions including rash, hives, swelling of the face, mouth and tongue, and breathing problems. • if you think you are exposed to infections such as chicken pox or measles, or if you have any signs of infection. You may have a higher chance of infection. • if you experience an increase in wheezing right after taking SYMBICORT, eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts, decreases in bone mineral density, swelling of blood vessels (signs include a feeling of pins and needles or numbness of arms or legs, flu like symptoms, rash, pain, and swelling of the sinuses), decrease in blood potassium and increase in blood sugar levels. If you are switching to SYMBICORT from an oral corticosteroid, follow your health care provider’s instructions to avoid serious health risks when you stop using oral corticosteroids. Common side effects include nose and throat irritation, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, sore throat, sinusitis, stomach discomfort, flu, back pain, nasal congestion, vomiting, and thrush in the mouth and throat. Approved Uses for SYMBICORT for Asthma SYMBICORT is a medicine for the treatment of asthma for people 12 years and older whose doctor has determined that their asthma is not well controlled with a long term asthma control medicine such as an inhaled corticosteroid or whose asthma is severe enough to begin treatment with SYMBICORT. Only your health care provider has the training to weigh the risks and benefits of a prescription drug.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SYMBICORT? People with asthma who take long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) medicines, such as formoterol (one of the medicines in SYMBICORT), have an increased risk of death from asthma problems. It is not known whether budesonide, the other medicine in SYMBICORT, reduces the risk of death from asthma problems seen with formoterol. SYMBICORT should be used only if your health care provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled with a longterm asthma control medicine, such as an inhaled corticosteroid, or that your asthma is severe enough to begin treatment with SYMBICORT. Talk with your health care provider about this risk and the benefits of treating your asthma with SYMBICORT. Get emergency medical care if: ■ breathing problems worsen quickly, and ■ you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it does not relieve your breathing problems. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may be at increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma problems.
WHAT IS SYMBICORT? SYMBICORT is an inhaled prescription medicine used for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two medicines:
■
Budesonide (the same medicine found in Pulmicort Flexhaler™, an inhaled corticosteroid). Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease inflammation in the lungs. Inflammation in the lungs can lead to asthma symptoms ■ Formoterol (the same medicine found in Foradil® Aerolizer®). LABA medicines are used in patients with COPD and asthma to help the muscles in the airways of your lungs stay relaxed to prevent asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles in the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe, which, in severe cases, can cause breathing to stop completely if not treated right away SYMBICORT is used for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as follows: Asthma SYMBICORT is used to control symptoms of asthma and prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and children ages 12 and older. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. SYMBICORT 160/4.5 mcg is used long-term, two times each day, to help improve lung function for better breathing in adults with COPD.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE SYMBICORT? Do not use SYMBICORT to treat sudden severe symptoms of asthma or COPD or if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in SYMBICORT.
WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY HEALTH CARE PROVIDER BEFORE USING SYMBICORT? Tell your health care provider about all of your health conditions, including if you: ■ have heart problems ■ have high blood pressure ■ have seizures ■ have thyroid problems ■ have diabetes ■ have liver problems ■ have osteoporosis ■ have an immune system problem ■ have eye problems such as increased pressure in the eye, glaucoma, or cataracts ■ are allergic to any medicines ■ are exposed to chicken pox or measles ■ are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if SYMBICORT may harm your unborn baby
■
are breast-feeding. Budesonide, one of the active ingredients in SYMBICORT, passes into breast milk. You and your health care provider should decide if you will take SYMBICORT while breast-feeding Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. SYMBICORT and certain other medicines may interact with each other and can cause serious side effects. Know all the medicines you take. Keep a list and show it to your health care provider and pharmacist each time you get a new medicine.
HOW DO I USE SYMBICORT? Do not use SYMBICORT unless your health care provider has taught you and you understand everything. Ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have any questions. Use SYMBICORT exactly as prescribed. Do not use SYMBICORT more often than prescribed. SYMBICORT comes in two strengths for asthma: 80/4.5 mcg and 160/4.5 mcg. Your health care provider will prescribe the strength that is best for you. SYMBICORT 160/4.5 mcg is the approved dosage for COPD. ■ SYMBICORT should be taken every day as 2 puffs in the morning and 2 puffs in the evening. ■ Rinse your mouth with water and spit the water out after each dose (2 puffs) of SYMBICORT. This will help lessen the chance of getting a fungus infection (thrush) in the mouth and throat. ■ Do not spray SYMBICORT in your eyes. If you accidentally get SYMBICORT in your eyes, rinse your eyes with water. If redness or irritation persists, call your health care provider. ■ Do not change or stop any medicines used to control or treat your breathing problems. Your health care provider will change your medicines as needed. ■ While you are using SYMBICORT 2 times each day, do not use other medicines that contain a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) for any reason. Ask your health care provider or pharmacist if any of your other medicines are LABA medicines. ■ SYMBICORT does not relieve sudden symptoms. Always have a rescue inhaler medicine with you to treat sudden symptoms. If you do not have a rescue inhaler, call your health care provider to have one prescribed for you.
Call your health care provider or get medical care right away if: ■ your breathing problems worsen with SYMBICORT ■ you need to use your rescue inhaler medicine more often than usual ■ your rescue inhaler does not work as well for you at relieving symptoms ■ you need to use 4 or more inhalations of your rescue inhaler medicine for 2 or more days in a row ■ you use one whole canister of your rescue inhaler medicine in 8 weeks’ time ■ your peak flow meter results decrease. Your health care provider will tell you the numbers that are right for you ■ your symptoms do not improve after using SYMBICORT regularly for 1 week
■ ■
■
■ ■
■ ■ ■
WHAT MEDICATIONS SHOULD I NOT TAKE WHEN USING SYMBICORT? While you are using SYMBICORT, do not use other medicines that contain a long-acting beta2agonist (LABA) for any reason, such as ■ Serevent® Diskus® (salmeterol xinafoate inhalation powder) ■ Advair Diskus® or Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) ■ Formoterol-containing products such as Foradil Aerolizer, Brovana®, or Perforomist®
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS WITH SYMBICORT? SYMBICORT can cause serious side effects. ■ Increased risk of pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections if you have COPD. Call your health care provider if you notice any of these symptoms: increase in mucus production, change in mucus color, fever, chills, increased cough, increased breathing problems ■ Serious allergic reactions including rash; hives; swelling of the face, mouth and tongue; and breathing problems. Call your health care provider or get emergency care if you get any of these symptoms
■
Immune system effects and a higher chance for infections Adrenal insufficiency–a condition in which the adrenal glands do not make enough steroid hormones Cardiovascular and central nervous system effects of LABAs, such as chest pain, increased blood pressure, fast or irregular heartbeat, tremor, or nervousness Increased wheezing right after taking SYMBICORT Eye problems, including glaucoma and cataracts. You should have regular eye exams while using SYMBICORT Osteoporosis. People at risk for increased bone loss may have a greater risk with SYMBICORT Slowed growth in children. As a result, growth should be carefully monitored Swelling of your blood vessels. This can happen in people with asthma Decreases in blood potassium levels and increases in blood sugar levels
WHAT ARE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF SYMBICORT? get that across, and that’s a fine line,” Levithan says. Despite her enormous success, Collins has stayed largely out of the limelight. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and two teenagers, turning down interview requests while mulling over her next project; she’s stated there will be no more books in the
series. “Anybody who reads The Hunger Games will not be surprised that she has h no desire to be a part of celebrity culture,” Levithan says. When Hollywood came courting, Collins Col was adamant about finding a team that would preserve her ethos ethos. Director Gary Ross was among many m angling for the plum job, and though he had films like Pleasantville and Seabiscuit on his Pleasantv résumé, he h knew he wasn’t an obvious candidate. As part of his unoffi f cial audition, he videotaped his teenage kids and their friends talking about what the book meant to them. “It was Katniss’s humanity that people gravitated to. This is a girl who fights for survival and finds something she is willing to give her life for,” Ross says. “There’s so much instability in the world. In the face of a very uncertain future, the idea that you can preserve the human part of you, connect to others, and fight for your values is a very positive and uplifting message.” Ross worked closely on the script with Collins, who is also listed as an executive producer. The competition for the role of Katniss was almost as fierce as the action in the Hunger Games arena. In the end, Jennifer Lawrence, 21, won the coveted part. Though she was coming off an Oscar nomination for 2010’s Winter’s Bone, some fans griped that she was too old and blond for the part. The discontent

It shows they have a strong family.” Despite the violent content, educators have been among the series’ most ardent proponents. Nicole Mailloux, a seventh-grade teacher in Clark, N.J., saw her students fighting over her copy of The Hunger Games and bought three more with her own money. When the reading frenzy continued, Mailloux persuaded her school to buy enough copies for 60 students so she could base an entire semester on the trilogy, even staging a mock version of the Games. “It’s opening kids’ eyes to what’s going on in our society, the control and monitoringg by government using technology and how people are desensitized to violence in video games—issues that at we face every day,” she says. subsided when Collins offered her public support. “I love Katniss,” says Lawrence, who spent weeks in combat and archery training before filming began. “She doesn’t have a lot, but she’s happy, and she faces death out of love for her family. She doesn’t want to be a hero, but she becomes the symbol for a revolution, a kind of futuristic Joan of Arc.” Lawrence felt a deep connection to the broader themes in the books as well, particularly the pointed critique of the current mania for reality TV. “I was watching the Kardashian girl getting divorced, and that’s a tragedy for anyone,” the actress says. “But they’re using it for entertainment, and we’re watching it. The books hold up a terrible kind of mirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to trauma and to each other’s pain.” Katniss’s fellow competitor from District 12, Peeta, is played by 19-year-old Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right). Though Peeta has few survival skills and at first appears to be the weaker of the two, his inner strength slowly emerges. “Peeta is all about staying true to yourself,” Hutcherson says. “He goes into the Games and does everything he can to maintain what he believes in and not become just another pawn.” Hutcherson has taken that lesson to heart. “Growing up

New York Times columnist and cookbook author Mark Bittman puts his own spin on an Italian staple
Minestrone was considered exotic when I was a child. It seemed different from standard “American” vegetable soup because of a heavier hand with the seasonings, a bit of olive oil, and slightly more unusual vegetables. Sometimes minestrone contained beans, pasta, or tomatoes, and sometimes it had all or none of these. Years later, when I learned to make soup, I realized that the lines blur between all of these variations. I also discovered that soup is not made from “scraps” but from ingredients that are as fresh as those you would put in a salad. This minestrone from my new book is a simple, delicious vegetable soup made with olive oil, tomatoes, and Parmesan cheese. I’ve served dozens of variations over the years, often to my kids (who like it with beans). It’s no longer exotic, that’s for sure.

Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant
I often attend symphonies in a certain concert hall. The performances sound best to me when I’m sitting about halfway between the stage and the back of the hall, a bit to the right or left of center. My sister agrees. Why would the best sound be found in these locations rather than, say, the front row, where ticket prices are higher? —K. Key, Moreno Valley, Calif.
Ticket pricing is based on patron interests, and concertgoers often care more about other factors. These include getting up close and personal with the conductor and orchestra (front-row seats), arriving late or leaving early (aisle seats), or avoiding sitting in the middle of crowds (outermost seats). Views are also important, which is why front-row seats in the lowest balcony often carry a high price tag. In general, the best sound will be found in the center area of an indoor venue, but in a well-designed concert hall, good sound can be enjoyed almost everywhere. What do you think is the role of emotion in our lives?

TV audiences were impressed—and with good reason—when first lady Michelle Obama recently knocked out 25 push-ups on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Experts say that old-school, equipment-free workouts can be just as challenging—and beneficial—as anything you’d do at the gym. Here, the right (and wrong) way to perform three classic moves.
Push-Ups
This power move strengthens the chest, shoulders, triceps, and core.
Jumping Jacks A set of highintensity jumping jacks can offer the same cardiovascular benefit as jogging, says Jim White, a personal trainer in Virginia Beach.
Plank
A yoga studio staple, this move builds endurance and tones nearly every major muscle group.

Trainer tip: For maximum benefit, keep your hands more than shoulder-width apart. Slowly bend your elbows until your chest is two inches off the ground and hold before pushing back up. Beginner: Start with one set of five. Advanced: Aim for two or three sets of 20 each. Trainer tip: “A lot of people do this move halfway,” says White. “Clap at the top of each jump to make sure you complete the full motion.” Beginner: Jump and clap as fast as you can for one minute. Advanced: Build fiveminute sets into a circuit workout. Trainer tip: “Keep your abs pulled in,” says Mindy Caplan, a yoga instructor in Austin, Tex. “It’s easy to let your hips sink toward the floor, but that puts strain on your back.” Beginner: Hold the plank for as long as you can, even if it’s just a few seconds. Advanced: Hold for 30 seconds or longer. —Vanessa Gregory INCREASED RISK OF DYING FROM CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AMONG PEOPLE WHOSE SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE (THE UPPER NUMBER) IS AT LEAST 15 MM HG HIGHER IN ONE ARM THAN IN THE OTHER.
