They faced angry mobs who beat them and firebombed their buses, but 450 volunteers persevered for the egf next five months. “Walking into the ‘Whites Only’ waiting room in the Jackson, Mississippi, train station was chilling,” recalls Helen Singleton, 78, who spent 39 days in jail for her actions. “But back then, my family couldn’t stop for lunch or use a restroom on a 14-hour car trip to visit my grandmother. We had to do something about hate in America.” The Freedom Riders’ bravery paid off—segregation was ultimately struck down. “We took the fight for civil liberties out of the courtroom and into the streets,” says Roy Innis, national chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality, which organized the first bus protests. “Black and white Americans stood together and put themselves on the line to make the world a better place for our children.” One of those children was Barack Obama—born in August 1961, just a few months after the Freedom Rides began. Statins, a good option, work mainly with the liver. ZETIA works in the digestive tract, as do some other cholesterol-lowering medicines.
A healthy diet and exercise are important, but sometimes they’re not enough to get your cholesterol where it needs to be. ZETIA can complement your efforts. When added to a healthy diet, ZETIA can lower bad cholesterol (LDL) by an average of 18%. Individual results may vary.
LIVER
DIGESTIVE TRACT
Important Risk Information About ZETIA:
ZETIA is a prescription medicine and should not be taken by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you have ever had liver problems, are nursing or pregnant or may become pregnant, a doctor will decide if ZETIA alone is right for you.
Manner Up! Modern etiquette made easy
Q: Someone in my office wears low-cut tops that are inappropriate for work. I don’t know where to look when I talk to her. Advice? —John R., Boston A: You could crank up the AC, but if you don’t want to force your colleagues to work in a meat locker, the best solution, says Beverly Weinstein, a recruiter and the president of Markham Media, is “to have a senior female executive take the woman aside and gently talk to her about what works for an office environment.” There’s no need for the conversation to be accusatory; it should be along the lines of, “It’s natural for people to stare at nice-looking figures, but you don’t want to be distracting.” To avoid any potential misunderstanding, it’s important that a woman exec give the talk, not a man. —Judith Newman
Unexplained muscle pain or weakness could be a sign of a rare but serious side effect and should be reported to your doctor right away. In clinical studies, patients reported few side effects while taking ZETIA. These included diarrhea, joint pains, and tiredness.
Cholesterol from food is absorbed when it enters the digestive tract.
You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Please read the more detailed information about ZETIA on the adjacent page.
For more information, call 1-800-98-ZETIA or visit zetia.com.
ZETIA is unique in the way it helps block the absorption of cholesterol that comes from food. Unlike some statins, ZETIA has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks.

ZETIAÂŽ (EZETIMIBE) TABLETS PATIENT INFORMATION ABOUT ZETIA (ze˘t´-eÂŻ-a˘) Generic name: ezetimibe (e˘-ze˘t´-e˘-mĹ¯b)
Read this information carefully before you start taking ZETIA and each time you get more ZETIA. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or your treatment. If you have any questions about ZETIA, ask your doctor. Only your doctor can determine if ZETIA is right for you.
WHAT IS ZETIA? ZETIA is a medicine used to lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. ZETIA is for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet and exercise alone. It can be used by itself or with other medicines to treat high cholesterol. You should stay on a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking this medicine. ZETIA works to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. ZETIA does not help you lose weight. ZETIA has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks. For more information about cholesterol, see the “What should I know about high cholesterol? section that follows.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE ZETIA?
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF ZETIAÂŽ (EZETIMIBE)? In clinical studies patients reported few side effects while taking ZETIA. These included diarrhea, joint pains, and feeling tired. Patients have experienced severe muscle problems while taking ZETIA, usually when ZETIA was added to a statin drug. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while taking ZETIA, contact your doctor immediately. You need to do this promptly, because on rare occasions, these muscle problems can be serious, with muscle breakdown resulting in kidney damage. Additionally, the following side effects have been reported in general use: allergic reactions (which may require treatment right away) including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat that may cause difďŹ culty in breathing or swallowing, rash, and hives; raised red rash, sometimes with target-shaped lesions; joint pain; muscle aches; alterations in some laboratory blood tests; liver problems; stomach pain; inflammation of the pancreas; nausea; dizziness; tingling sensation; depression; headache; gallstones; inammation of the gallbladder. Tell your doctor if you are having these or any other medical problems while on ZETIA. For a complete list of side effects, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT HIGH CHOLESTEROL? # + cholesterol is made up of LDL and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is called “badâ€? cholesterol because it can build up in the wall of your arteries and form plaque. Over time, plaque build-up can cause a narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing can slow or block blood ow to your heart, brain, and other organs. High LDL cholesterol is a major cause of heart disease and one of the causes for stroke. HDL cholesterol is called “goodâ€? cholesterol because it keeps the bad cholesterol from building up in the arteries. Triglycerides also are fats found in your blood.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ZETIA Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaets. Do not use ZETIA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give ZETIA to other people, even if they have the same condition you have. It may harm them. This summarizes the most important information about ZETIA. If you would like more information, talk with your doctor. You can ask your pharmacist or doctor for information about ZETIA that is written for health professionals. Ask Marilyn
By Marilyn vos Savant If human life were to vanish from Earth, leaving only animals and plants, how long would it take for the environment to return to a pristine state? —Rod Strassburg, Winston-Salem, N.C.
buildings, roads, dams, and bridges would become ruins in just a few centuries, but they’d take thousands of years to disappear entirely. Meanwhile, nuclear waste in long-term storage would gradually become harmless. Without human attention, our hundreds of active reactors would catch fire or melt down and release radiation, but even that wouldn’t stop nature’s rapid return. (Many plants and animals seem to be flourishing in the contaminated area around Chernobyl, the scene of a nuclear disaster in Ukraine only 25 years ago.) Excess carbon dioxide would be cleansed by the oceans over tens of thousands of years. By then, added methane would be long gone. The toxic impact of pollutants such as DDT wouldn’t last even a century. So the planet would forget all about us in maybe 50,000 years—far less time than humankind has existed. And if an unaltered atmosphere isn’t an essential part of what you call a pristine state, our influence would be gone in less than half that time— and maybe much less. father’s love. I had it, and I have it still. As charming a star and as remarkable a gentleman as he was, Cary Grant was a more thoughtful and loving father. For the last 20 years of his life, I had the privilege of experiencing the full, vital passion of his heart. I wrote my new book, Good Stuff, to share my memories of what made my father so very special. Here are some cherished photos and mementos from our time together.

When I was a kid, chalupas were like our PB & Js after school. They didn’t require a lot of cooking, because my mom would have the beans and tostadas (crisp, fried tortillas) ready for us. It was all about assembly. And they were kidfriendly—we could add cheese or whatever we wanted to build them the way we liked. I remember being so small and thinking our kitchen was huge—it was always the busiest room in the house. But I went back to look at it recently, and in fact it was so tiny! I mean, really, you could reach out your hands and touch wall to wall. I thought, “How did my mom feed five hungry mouths out of this itty-bitty kitchen?” And it was noisy! People say I have a really loud voice, and that’s because I’ve always had to fight my sisters for attention. They speak loudly in order to be heard, so I’ve always had to speak loudly, too!

T
hanks to a young
waiter, I only recently discovered that a friend of 20 years was once a yo-yo virtuoso. “Oh, stop it!” Jackie said when I started laughing during our dinner at the Mad Greek in Cleveland Heights. “I was, too. I had a Duncan Butterfly yo-yo and—aaand— I knew how to ‘Walk the Dog.’ ” “Wow, really?” said our waiter, Jumario Simmons, flashing a big smile at us. “Don’t encourage her,” I said. “What else could you do?” he asked. “I did ‘Round the World,’ ” Jackie said, now ignoring me completely. “That cradle thing, too.” This stunning revelation unfurled after I’d asked Jumario what he did when he wasn’t waiting on tables. The lanky 24-year-old was so smart and witty that I knew there had to be more to his story. Turns out he won a regional yoyo competition last year. He also gives free lessons to kids. “It gives them something to do,” Jumario said. “Keeps them off the streets.” One of the great things about eating out is this kind of impromptu table talk with strangers, which reminds us that everyone has a life and a name. But the other day I heard on NPR that some restaurants are extinguishing this oh-so-human interaction between diners and servers. I listened to the reporter describe how 26 • May 1, 2011
these establishments are allowing customers to text orders from their tables to speed up service. The reporter got my attention with this sentence: “Five minutes after typing ‘I’m at table 3. I want a tossed salad with ranch dressing,’ a meal arrives at the table.” Forget for a moment—and only for a moment—that there wasn’t a “please” with this order. Which should have been a request, by the way. If you’ve ever waited on tables, you know that the last thing you need is yet another way for a customer to be obnoxious.
Most servers already cater to our every epicurean whim while balancing trays the size of UFOs. They’re constantly mediating between customers’ requests for substitutions and overworked cooks’ accusations of treason. Except at high-end restaurants, servers also have to hover like mothers of preschoolers so that we might deem them worthy of a large enough tip to lift their pay to minimum wage. Now, add to this stress the flurry of text messages from people with the manners of feral cats. My prediction: Some of those UFOs
are going to take flight, and soon. Texting a server from a table a few feet away is the modern-day equivalent of snapping our fingers and shouting, “Hey, you!” It was rude in 1957, and it’s rude now. And if you think you’re too busy or important to endure a threeminute interaction with another human being, boy, does life have some surprises in store for you. You won’t ever find me texting a waiter or waitress. I’m selfish that way. I never know when I’ll meet a server who reminds me life is lived one glorious moment at a time. Individuals like Jumario Simmons, who whipped out a Duncan Imperial yo-yo and, for 60 seconds, cast a spell on two middle-aged women one night in Cleveland. Jackie giggled as he rattled off the names of yo-yo tricks: “Eli Hops.” “Arm Grind.” “The Green Triangle.” Then he served us coffee and bowed farewell. I turned and stared at Jackie. “Twenty years I’ve known you,” I said. “Twenty years, and you never once mentioned this.” “You never asked,” she said, smoothing her napkin. One second…two seconds… “You should have seen me with a Pogo Stick,” she said. “Nobody jumped higher. Nobody.” See Jumario Simmons do the “Salvanters” and the “Broken Heart” at Parade.com/yoyo

At some restaurants, you can now text your order to your waiter. This, my fellow Americans, is not progress.
