Q: Was Mr. Peanut
based on a real person? —Monica Neil, Raleigh, N.C.
Albert Brooks
A: No, he was the product of a child’s imagination. In 1916, a schoolboy by the name of Antonio Gentile won a contest to create the snack-food company’s logo. A professional artist later added a top hat, spats, a monocle, and a cane, bringing to life the Mr. Peanut that has appeared on almost every Planters package and advertisement since.

PARADE: Are your Sundays very different since you left SNL in 2008? They’re so different— I stopped being a vampire. Before kids, there wasn’t a night for 10 years that Will and I went to sleep before 2 a.m. I’d sleep until noon or one, and I thought 10:30 a.m. was early. Now I’m sound asleep by 11:30 every night, and the kids wake us up around seven— on a good day.

The Saturday Night Live alum, best known for her impersonations of Hillary Clinton and Kelly Ripa, now keeps viewers chuckling as the star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation (Thursdays, 9:30 p.m. ET). Here, she tells writer David Hochman about how she stays entertained. 4 • May 15, 2011
Do you still watch h SNL? I do, but not on Saturdays. I’ll watch it first thing on Sunnday. Then I’ll text Seth Meyers [her former cohost on the Weekend Update segments] to say what I liked. I’m a Sunday-morning comedy quarterback. Any other weekend rituals? We go to the farmers’ market and ooh and aah over the California produce. Avocados! I’m like, “Just take my wallet and fill up the basket.” Then, on a really awesome day, I’ll spend the afternoon cleaning out my closets. I love to organize. To me, there’s no greater grown-up pleasure than cleaning your drawers while listening to This American Life or Fresh Air on public radio. Your brain gets organized, and so does your underwear.
What’s your secret to distracting two kids under 3? I’ll bring my BlackBerry, and everybody wants it. But bring one that’s a few seasons old for them to play with and they look at you like, “Nice try.” Even kids under 2 seem to have a sense for technology and what the latest product is.

Q: I’m horribly allergic to cats. My sister-in-law puts her beloved kitties, Sonny and Cher, in a back bedroom when I visit, but there’s still cat hair all over the furniture, and it makes me sneeze. When I pointed this out to her, she thought I was accusing her of being a bad housekeeper. Now she’s insulted that I won’t come over. What can I do? —Joseph K., Tampa, Fla. A: Calm her down with your new best friend, Science. The problem is not cat hair; it’s dander in the fur. “Even with good housecleaning, dander floats in the air and can get in your nose and eyes,” says Clifford W. Bassett, medical director of Allergy & Asthma Care of New York. Once you’ve explained that your misery has nothing to do with your sister-in-law’s (excellent!) housekeeping, the question becomes: How often do you need to visit? If it’s only occasionally, you could load up on over-the-counter allergy meds beforehand. But if her home is a frequent gathering place, you might consider gifting her with a HEPA air filter or a HEPA vacuum cleaner, which will help reduce allergens in the air. A PIRATE’S LIFE Depp’s Captain Jack wades in with Cruz, who plays the scheming Angelica. Below, Ian McShane as Blackbeard.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (May 20)
Starring Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane It’s the fourth go-round for Depp’s iconic scalawag Captain Jack Sparrow, who’s off to find the fountain of youth (this time without original co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom). Along the way, Sparrow encounters the King of England, zombies, and shapeshifting mermaids. But the biggest plot twist happened offscreen, when a surprise stowaway was discovered about a week before filming began. Cruz, who co-starred with Depp in 2001’s Blow, had signed on to play scheming, lusty pirate Angelica, the con-artist daughter of evildoer Blackbeard (McShane) and a mysterious figure from Sparrow’s past. Then—shiver their timbers!—just as 3-D cameras were about to roll last June, the actress learned she was pregnant, a fact that wouldn’t be confirmed to the media for three more

months. (Cruz and Javier Bardem married in July in the Bahamas, and their son was born in January.) So, what to do? “We were like, uhhhhhh,” recalls director Rob Marshall, who had worked with Cruz on Nine. “I said, ‘Are you going to be okay sword fighting with a baby in your stomach?’ But she was up for it. She said she’d understand if we had to replace her, but she didn’t want to be replaced. It took more time, ultimately. But she was worth it. She’s so special in the movie. Still, Cruz felt the shakiness of the plank that the cast and crew found themselves walking. “It could have gone many different ways,” she says. “It’s really amazing how generous and kind they have been, because there were a lot of things to adjust.” While Disney execs must have been nervous about their gold-mine franchise, Depp doesn’t recall batting so much as one mascaralined eyelash at the revised game plan. “I knew it would be fine from the first second,” he says. “Everybody was incredibly watchful and protective of Penélope. She didn’t take any horrific risks, but she did a lot of sword fighting and stunty things. In terms of the logistics, when the belly got a little bigger, you’d tighten up the camera angle a bit.” That wasn’t the only strategizing required. Cruz’s most taxing fight scenes—there’s a huge, mutinous brawl aboard Blackbeard’s ship, among other set pieces—had to be pushed up in the shoot schedule. Her costume’s black corset (its ties replaced with elastic and hidden under a coat) and big white shirt with puffy sleeves helped slim her silhouette. And in some wide shots, Cruz’s look-alike sister, Mónica, doubled for her. THE SMURFS (Aug. 3) Starring Neil Patrick Harris,
Jayma Mays; with voices of Katy Perry, George Lopez Harris didn’t grow up a Smurfs fan (“They freaked me out,” he says, laughing), but he liked them as co-stars. “They never forget their lines,” he deadpans. In the franchise’s first animation and live-action hybrid, the Smurfs find themselves in Manhattan, bunking with Patrick (Harris) and Grace (Mays) as they try to return to Smurf Village. There will be new faces in the blue mix, but director Raja Gosnell vows, “All the characters people know and love will be there.”
GREEN LANTERN (June 17)
Starring Ryan Reynolds,
Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard A buffed-up Reynolds plays cocky test pilot Hal Jordan, who is transported by aliens to the planet Oa, where he’s drafted into a sort of interstellar police force. “He’s more like a Han Solo,” Reynolds says of Jordan. “Sarcastic, kind of witty, and definitely not the dark, brooding character you see in a lot of comic-book films.”

SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW | continued THE HANGOVER PART II (May 26) Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis
Their 2009 trip to Vegas grossed $467 million worldwide, and now the boys are taking the debauchery overseas, tearing through Thailand on the eve of Stu’s (Helms’s) wedding. They wake up in a decrepit hovel with a pet monkey and a tribal tattoo, but minus the brother of the bride. “It’s very different from the Frank Sinatra suite in the first movie,” says director Todd Phillips. “Fans will be surprised at the level the guys have to sink to in Bangkok.”
Black is back as the voice of Po, giddily training with his heroes Bl the Furious Five until the evil Shen (Oldman) forces them from their idyllic valley and into a fight for the survival of kung fu itself. the “We wanted to challenge Po with bigger, crazier locations,” says “W director Jennifer Yuh Nelson. The action sequences —now in dir 3-D—get a boost as well. “It takes things to another level and 3 puts you in the middle of the battles,” Black says. “We’ll be blowing minds.” After two films, Black feels a bond with the lovable panda. “There’s not much separation between Po and a young me,” he says. “I ‘d look up to my idols and dream about being one of them. That’s what Po’s all about.”
LARRY CROWNE (July 1) Starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts
Hanks directed, cowrote, and stars in this gently comic look at life after a layoff. “The future has become the X factor for many folks,” he says. “Not just making the house payments, but a deeper wonder of, What will people do with each day? Who will they be?” The star plays Larry, a downsized bigbox-store employee who enrolls in community college and romances his unhappily married speech teacher (Roberts). “What can he do but have faith in himself?” Hanks adds.
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (July 1) Starring Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson,
Patrick Dempsey, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Robots, romance, and rivalry, oh my! As if trying to help the Autobots beat the Decepticons in a space race isn’t enough, Sam (LaBeouf) must keep his new girlfriend, Carly (HuntingtonWhiteley), from falling for her car-collector boss (Dempsey). The Grey’s Anatomy star relished the adrenaline rush. “I went from the ultimate chick show to the ultimate male show,” Dempsey says. “There are lots of explosions, and I loved every minute of it.” 10 • May 15, 2011
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (July 22)
Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones Meet Steve Rogers (Evans), a scrawny, wannabe WWII soldier rejected by the U.S. Army, then turned into a Naziclobbering powerhouse by a military experiment. “He doesn’t have to work for it, doesn’t have to pump iron,” says director Joe Johnston. “It’s every man’s dream.” To make Evans look underweight at first, his head was digitally grafted onto another actor’s body—but he had to train two hours daily and eat constantly to become Captain America. “Some days I couldn’t move from the couch,” Evans says. “I felt like my stomach was going to burst.”
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 (July 15)
Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
Harry (Radcliffe), Hermione (Watson), and Ron (Grint) return to Hogwarts after Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes)—armed with the unbeatable Elder Wand—attacks the school and sets in motion the final showdown between the Chosen One and the Dark Lord. “There’s a bit about the wand that wasn’t in the book and will surprise fans,” hints director David Yates. “It’s a very poignant part, and it’s about letting go of certain things.” Grint feels the film’s massive scale will be a fitting end to the franchise. “I think there was pressure to really go out with a bang,” he says. “Part two is kind of like a war film, and we all become soldiers in a way.” In one scene of this final episode, fans will see the trio looking 19 years older. “I aged quite badly,” Grint laughs. “I don’t look pretty, but it was fun and a nice ending.”

HARBOR FREIGHT TOOLS Quality Tools at Ridiculously Low Prices FACTORY DIRECT TO YOU!
ZOOKEEPER (July8) Starring Kevin James,
Rosario Dawson It’s Dr. Doolittle meets Cyrano de Bergerac when a zoo’s animals reveal they can talk (Adam Sandler and Cher are among the A-list voices). The animals’ goal: to help their lonely caretaker (James) win his dream girl (Dawson) by teaching him nature’s rules of romance. To play veterinarian Kate, Dawson had to go above and beyond. “I’m a huge animal lover; my only problem is I’m allergic to them,” she says with a laugh. “There was a lot of medication involved.” Easier to cope with was James. “On set, he wasn’t just romancing me, he was romancing my boyfriend, too,” she says. “Everyone just loves him.”

PHOTO: COURTESY OF TRACY BENNETT
Starring Kyle Chandler, Joel
Courtney, Elle Fanning Is it a young-teen love story? An homage to coproducer Steven Spielberg’s aliens-among-us tales? Or a period piece (set in 1979) about an Ohio widower (Chandler) struggling to be a dad to his 14-yearold son (newcomer Courtney)? “It’s a cocktail of things,” says writerdirector J.J. Abrams. “The idea was to invoke the spirit of films that inspired me as a kid without xeroxing them.” Like Abrams at their age, the kids in Super 8 are budding moviemakers. One night while out filming their zombie movie, they witness a train wreck that unleashes a horrific beast. So what exactly is that awful thing? Don’t ask Chandler, who is sworn to secrecy. “You hear that surveillance helicopter?” the Friday Night Lights star jokes. “I gotta go.” May 15, 2011 • 11

SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW | continued
Starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard Stone is glad she hadn’t read Kathryn Stockett’s bestseller before auditioning. “I think I would’ve been too daunted,” she says of playing Skeeter Phelan, a white journalist who upends her 1960s Jackson, Miss., community by encouraging the town’s black maids (including Davis’s Aibileen, below) to tell their stories. “It’s like a rock concert because people are screaming and shouting and then they’re crying at the end,” adds producer Chris Columbus about the film’s early screenings. “And men are not embarrassed to love this movie as well.”
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (June 3)
Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence,
Nicholas Hoult, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Kevin Bacon Set during the Cuban missile crisis, this stylish story details the friendship and fallout between Magneto (Fassbender) and Professor X (McAvoy). “We wanted to explore how a group
of mutants suddenly became a fully equipped fighting team,” producer Bryan Singer says. “People cross sides, and as the action ratchets up, so does the emotion.” Bacon plays the villainous Sebastian Shaw as “a little bit Hugh Hefner, Donald Trump, and Ted Turner,” the actor says. “He’s very smooth and charming, but there’s a ruthless side to him.”
ONE DAY (Aug. 19)
Starring Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess
CARS 2 (June 24)
Voices of Owen Wilson,
True to the bittersweet novel it’s based on, this film follows the winding relationship of Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Sturgess), revisiting them on the same day each year for two decades after their initial meeting. For Hathaway, it was a challenge keeping up with 20 years of weight fluctuations. “I’d puff up and then all of a sudden have to lose it,” she says. But the tougher terrain was Emma’s Northern English accent. “I had visions of people from Leeds coming at me with torches,” she says with a laugh.
CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (July 29)
Starring Steve Carell,
Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone After his wife (Moore) walks away from their marriage, a depressed Cal (Carell) becomes a ladies’-man-in-training under the tutelage of playboy Jacob (Gosling). Although his abs get ample screen time, it’s Gosling’s comedic chops that impress. “When we heard Ryan was interested, we all scratched our heads,” admits Glenn Ficarra, who directed the film with John Requa. “But after five minutes with him, it was like, he’s a natural.” Stone is the woman who just might tame Jacob’s wandering eye. “She’s played everything by the books,” the actress says of her character, “but Jacob’s a pretty good reason to go off the beaten path.” 12 • May 15, 2011
COWBOYS & ALIENS (July 29)
Starring Harrison Ford,
MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS (June 17)
Starring Jim Carrey
This update of the 1930s children’s tale—about a man whose world goes topsy-turvy after some penguins come into his life—let Carrey channel his Ace Ventura mojo. “I’m not afraid to work with animals,” he says. “They like me. And who could be unhappy around penguins?” The set was kept ice cold for the birds, whose real-life antics were enhanced with computer graphics. “Jim had to wear long underwear,” says director Mark Waters, “but the penguins loved it.”
Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde Adapted from a graphic novel, this genre mash-up set in 1873 follows amnesiac Jake Lonergan (Craig) into a hostile mining town, where he encounters an old flame (Wilde) and an ornery rancher (Ford). When spaceships show up, everyone unites against the common enemy. Quirky premise aside, the big draw may be the leading men. “You have action heroes of different generations who’ve both done definitive work,” says director Jon Favreau. “It’s like watching two great fighters square off.”
Larry the Cable Guy While abroad for the World Grand Prix with pal Lightning McQueen (Wilson), tow truck Mater (Larry) sparks a spy caper when he’s mistaken for an operative. Director John Lasseter says the story is about how the big race “strains their friendship,” while Larry raves about animated settings so gorgeous, “I want to book my next vacation there.”

Elizabeth Williams Williams, a 6-foot-3 center, made more than 50% of her shots in high school and can rebound and block with the best players in the nation. She’ll be a star at Duke next year.

If you’re taking insulin, ask your health care provider about the beneďŹ ts of FlexPenÂŽ ÂŽ
Ask Marilyn
By Marilyn vos Savant Say that a box contains two coins. One coin has heads on both sides. The other coin has heads on one side and tails on the other. A coin is selected at random, and the face of one side is observed. If the face is heads, what is the probability that the other side is heads?
Insulin delivery that’s going places, just like you In a restaurant, at work, even at home, NovoLogÂŽ FlexPenÂŽ follows. FlexPenŽ—a discreet, preďŹ lled, dial-a-dose insulin pen.
—Randy Schantz, Detroit
Two out of three. Say you label the double-headed coin “heads #1 on one side and “heads #2 on the other. The regular coin is simply “heads and “tails. You have an equal chance of seeing any of these sides: (a) heads; (b) tails; (c) heads #1; and (d) heads #2. In the puzzle, you see one of the heads. This eliminates (b) tails. (You didn’t see tails.) Three possibilities remain: (a) heads (with tails on the reverse); (c) heads #1 (with heads #2 on the reverse); and (d) heads #2 (with heads #1 on the reverse). So the chances are two out of three that the other side is one of the heads. Why are the streets always wet in movies and television programs? —Debbie LeCavalier, Westminster, Colo.
Wet pavement adds visual interest, such as reection, and heightens the sense of drama. It makes the subject seem more vivid. To Hollywood, a dry street is a boring street! To ask a question, visit Parade.com/askmarilyn May 15, 2011 • 17

Patient Information NovoLog® (NŌ-vō-log) (insulin aspart [rDNA origin] Injection) This is a BRIEF SUMMARY of important information about NovoLog®. This information does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your diabetes or your treatment. Make sure that you know how to manage your diabetes. Ask your healtthcare provider if you have any questions about managing your diabetes.
𰀁𰁊 NovoLog® is a fast-acting insulin. The effects of NovoLog® start working 10 to 20 minutes after injection or bolus pump infusion. 𰀁𰁊 Do not inject NovoLog® if you do not plan to eat right after your injection or bolus pump infusion. 𰀁𰁊 The greatest blood sugar lowering effect is between 1 and 3 hours after the injection or infusion. This blood sugar lowering lasts for 3 to 5 hours. 𰀁𰁊 While using NovoLog® you may have to change your total dose of insulin, your dose of longer-acting insulin, or the number of injections of longer-acting insulin you use. Pump users given NovoLog® may need to change the amount of total insulin given as a basal infusion. 𰀁𰁊 Do not mix NovoLog®: 𰁊 with any other insulins when used in a pump 𰁊 with any insulins other than NPH when used with injections by syringe If your healthcare provider recommends diluting NovoLog®, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly so that you know: 𰀁𰁊 How to make NovoLog® more dilute (that is, a smaller number of units of NovoLog® for a given amount of liquid) and 𰀁𰁊 How to use this more dilute form of NovoLog®. Do not use dilute insulin in a pump. 𰀁𰁊 Inject NovoLog® into the skin of your stomach area, upper arms, buttocks or upper legs. NovoLog® may affect your blood sugar levels sooner if you inject it into the skin of your stomach area. Never inject NovoLog® into a vein or into a muscle. 𰀁𰁊 Change (rotate) your injection site within the chosen area (for example, stomach or upper arm) with each dose. Do not inject into the exact same spot for each injection. 𰀁𰁊 If you take too much NovoLog®, your blood sugar may fall low (hypoglycemia). You can treat mild low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) by drinking or eating something sugary right away (fruit juice, sugar candies, or glucose tablets). It is important to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) right away because it could get worse and you could pass out (become unconscious). If you pass out you will need help from another person or emergency medical services right away, and will need treatment with a glucagon injection or treatment at a hospital. See “What are the possible side effects of NovoLog®?” for more information on low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). 𰀁𰁊 If you forget to take your dose of NovoLog®, your blood sugar may go too high (hyperglycemia). If high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is not treated it can lead to serious problems, like loss of consciousness (passing out), coma or even death. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for treating high blood sugar. Know your symptoms of high blood sugar which may include: 𰁊 increased thirst 𰁊 fruity smell on the breath 𰁊 frequent urination 𰁊 drowsiness 𰁊 loss of appetite 𰁊 a hard time breathing 𰁊 high amounts of sugar and ketones in your urine 𰁊 nausea, vomiting (throwing up) or stomach pain 𰀁𰁊 Check your blood sugar levels. Ask your healthcare provider what your blood sugars should be and when you should check your blood sugar levels. Your insulin dosage may need to change because of: 𰁊 illness 𰁊 change in diet 𰁊 stress 𰁊 other medicines you take 𰁊 change in physical activity or exercise

Dr. Anne Camp Preventing diabetes by showing—not just telling— her patients how to eat right EVERY DAY, endocrinologist
Dr. Anne Camp sees people in danger of developing diabetes, but the typical prevention advice doesn’t work in her low-income Connecticut neighborhood. “The residents can’t afford to join gyms, and many buy their food in bodegas that have few fruits and vegetables,” Camp says. So she worked with staff to give patients more than just advice by starting a free diabetes prevention program at the Fair Haven Community Health Center. While attending bilingual nutrition and exercise classes, participants can grow their own produce. A neighborhood bakery donated space for a garden, and excess heat from the ovens is vented into a greenhouse. And an area cycling club is refurbishing donated bikes for participants. Since the program began in 2007, 200 families have enrolled, and a pilot study found that the average particiWHERE New pant lost 6.5 Haven, Conn. pounds, reducing WHAT SHE’S his or her diabeDOING Helping low-income tes risk by a families reduce third. —Colleen their risk for Shaddox diabetes
