WALTER SCOTT ASKS…
Lucy Liu
The actress, 42, reprises her role as the voice of charming warriorsnake Viper in Kung Fu Panda 2, in theaters May 26. Do kids come up to you because of the movie? No. I don’t know if they really connect how it works. There’s a kind of naïveté and beauty in that. I don’t want to crush it! Is it true you play the accordion? I played it when I was very young, and then when I was on Ally McBeal, [co-star] Greg Germann was taking lessons from the same teacher, so we’d play in each other’s dressing rooms. What do you think of the new Charlie’s Angels TV show? It’s so exciting! I think it’s a great idea, and it’s amazing that it’s coming back to television. Any chance you, Drew [Barrymore, who is the show’s executive producer], or Cameron [Diaz] will make a cameo? I don’t think so. We get asked a lot if there will be a third movie, but that’s run its course. Now you’ll get it every week. Have a question for Walter Scott? Visit Parade.com/celebrity or write Walter Scott at P.O. Box 5001, Grand Central Station, New York, N.Y. 10163-5001.
A: “Yes, I’m doing a remix album of new songs and some of my hits to mark my 40th anniversary in music this year,” says the star, 62. “My life today is about health, so the CD will raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre [in Australia]. The first single is ‘Magic.’” Q: Did Joe Cocker invent air guitar? —Becky Alexander, Philadelphia
A: No, but he helped make it famous with his enthusiastic rocking out at Woodstock in 1969. The actual origin of air guitar remains debatable, with some pointing to the Diamonds’ Bill Reed and his fivesecond riff in 1957 and others finding early influence in Jimi Hendrix’s storied childhood practice of using a broom as a guitar.

LONG DRIVE HOME
by Will Allison, fiction ($22)
A moment of pique has lifeand-death consequences in this suspenseful, finely etched novel. Irritated by a speeding teenage driver, suburban dad Glen Bauer swerves his car in response, causing an accident in which the other driver dies. What results is a cautionary tale about guilt, responsibility, and how mistrust can tear a loving family apart.
heart-pounding disco dance anthems like the title track and the suggestive second single, “Judas,” Lady Gaga’s third album is sure to be one of the season’s biggest, buzziest new releases. ECLIPSE from Journey ($10, exclusively at Walmart) Though keyboardist
Jonathan Cain has called this a hard-hitting concept record, at its core, Eclipse is vintage arena rock. The songs have darker themes and spryer guitar licks than those of the past, as well as the energetic tenor of lead singer (since 2007) Arnel Pineda, but tunes like “City of Hope” feel like hits you’ve known for years.

Forever Young ock and roll never dies—it never even retires. when bob dylan
turns 70 (yes, 70!) on May 24, he’ll barely take a break from a nonstop touring schedule that has him playing everywhere from China to Israel. And he’s got egf plenty of gray-haired company in the world of rock. Neil Diamond, Mike Love, and Joan Baez already hit 70 this year, with Charlie Watts, David Crosby, and both Simon and Garfunkel following later in 2011. “These people came of age when you weren’t supposed to trust anybody over 30, and they’re on the road as grandparents and great-grandparents,” says Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of concert-industry trade publication Pollstar. Boomers aren’t the only ones taking notice (and maybe even a bit of inspiration). Taylor Swift, 21, says her hero is Kris Kristofferson—who turned 70 nearly five years ago. “Seeing these people still so excited about music and performing so well is an amazing example,” she says. Not that she’s making any promises about her own longevity. “I have no idea if I’ll continue to play when I’m 70,” Swift adds, sounding pooped at the mere idea of a half century of work ahead. “But the fact that it’s possible is a wonderful thing to know.” —Chris Willman

is a charming confection that asks the question, Is there a time you’d rather be living in than your own? Owen Wilson is at his most appealing as a writer who suddenly, and inexplicably, finds himself hobnobbing with bygone literary and artistic greats, played by the likes of Kathy Bates and Adrien Brody. The conceit resonates more deeply than you might expect, and the scenery is nothing short of magnifique.

Your doctor may do blood tests to check your liver before you start taking ZETIA with a statin and during treatment. Generic name: ezetimibe (e˘-ze˘t´-e˘-mı¯b)
Read this information carefully before you start taking ZETIA and each time you get more ZETIA. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or your treatment. If you have any questions about ZETIA, ask your doctor. Only your doctor can determine if ZETIA is right for you.
WHAT IS ZETIA? ZETIA is a medicine used to lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. ZETIA is for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet and exercise alone. It can be used by itself or with other medicines to treat high cholesterol. You should stay on a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking this medicine. ZETIA works to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. ZETIA does not help you lose weight. ZETIA has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks. For more information about cholesterol, see the “What should I know about high cholesterol?” section that follows.
WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE ZETIA? • Do not take ZETIA if you are allergic to ezetimibe, the active ingredient in ZETIA, or to the inactive ingredients. For a list of inactive ingredients, see the “Inactive ingredients” section that follows. • If you have active liver disease, do not take ZETIA while taking cholesterol-lowering medicines called statins. • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take ZETIA while taking a statin. • If you are a woman of childbearing age, you should use an effective method of birth control to prevent pregnancy while using ZETIA added to statin therapy. ZETIA has not been studied in children under age 10.
WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY DOCTOR BEFORE AND WHILE TAKING ZETIA? Tell your doctor about any prescription and non-prescription medicines you are taking or plan to take, including natural or herbal remedies. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including allergies. Tell your doctor if you: • ever had liver problems. ZETIA may not be right for you. • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Your doctor will discuss with you whether ZETIA is right for you. • are breast-feeding. We do not know if ZETIA can pass to your baby through your milk. Your doctor will discuss with you whether ZETIA is right for you. • experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.
HOW SHOULD I TAKE ZETIA?
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF ZETIA® (EZETIMIBE)? 7-MINUTE SOLUTION
In clinical studies patients reported few side effects while taking ZETIA. These included diarrhea, joint pains, and feeling tired.
HOW TO SHOOT A GRADUATION VIDEO PEOPLE WILL ACTUALLY WANT TO WATCH
Patients have experienced severe muscle problems while taking ZETIA, usually when ZETIA was added to a statin drug. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while taking ZETIA, contact your doctor immediately. You need to do this promptly, because on rare occasions, these muscle problems can be serious, with muscle breakdown resulting in kidney damage. Additionally, the following side effects have been reported in general use: allergic reactions (which may require treatment right away) including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat that may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing, rash, and hives; raised red rash, sometimes with target-shaped lesions; joint pain; muscle aches; alterations in some laboratory blood tests; liver problems; stomach pain; inflammation of the pancreas; nausea; dizziness; tingling sensation; depression; headache; gallstones; inflammation of the gallbladder. Tell your doctor if you are having these or any other medical problems while on ZETIA. For a complete list of side effects, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT HIGH CHOLESTEROL? Cholesterol is a type of fat found in your blood. Your total cholesterol is made up of LDL and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is called “bad” cholesterol because it can build up in the wall of your arteries and form plaque. Over time, plaque build-up can cause a narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing can slow or block blood fl ow to your heart, brain, and other organs. High LDL cholesterol is a major cause of heart disease and one of the causes for stroke. HDL cholesterol is called “good” cholesterol because it keeps the bad cholesterol from building up in the arteries. Triglycerides also are fats found in your blood.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ZETIA Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use ZETIA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give ZETIA to other people, even if they have the same condition you have. It may harm them. This summarizes the most important information about ZETIA. If you would like more information, talk with your doctor. You can ask your pharmacist or doctor for information about ZETIA that is written for health professionals. Inactive ingredients: Croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Issued July 2009 REV 21 29480885T
• Take ZETIA once a day, with or without food. It may be easier to remember to take your dose if you do it at the same time every day, such as with breakfast, dinner, or at bedtime. If you also take another medicine to reduce your cholesterol, ask your doctor if you can take them at the same time. • If you forget to take ZETIA, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not take more than one dose of ZETIA a day. • Continue to follow a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking ZETIA. Ask your doctor if you need diet information. • Keep taking ZETIA unless your doctor tells you to stop. It is important that you keep taking ZETIA even if you do not feel sick. See your doctor regularly to check your cholesterol level and to check for side effects. Your doctor may do blood tests to check your liver before you start taking ZETIA with a statin and during treatment.
Steve Stockman, movie and TV director and author of How to Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck, offers these tips (and, yes, they work for any occasion!)
Manufactured for: Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals North Wales, PA 19454, USA
THINK BEFORE YOU SHOOT Take a couple of minutes to plan what you want to record. Rituals like graduations follow a format. You know there will be speeches and your son or daughter will be picking up a diploma. If there’s a program, read it through before the ceremony, focusing on which parts you think might make great shots. SCOUT YOUR LOCATION Look around to figure out how you can get closer to the action for critical shots. Is there an unobtrusive place near the stage where you’re not going to get beaten up by other parents? Keep in mind that the light needs to be behind you, not shining right into the lens. ACTION! Don’t just start shooting at the beginning of the commencement ceremony and stop an hour later. No one wants to watch the event in real time. Your final video should be three minutes long. Think short shots: Record for 10 seconds, turn off the camera, look for something else that’s interesting, and shoot for another 10 seconds. The result will be a professional-looking video that moves along, covers all the important moments, and is still entertaining years from now.

Is your arthritis pain medicine putting you at risk for stomach issues?
Ask your doctor about VIMOVO. VIMOVO is a prescription medicine that combines a proven arthritis pain reliever with built-in medication that can help protect you from stomach issues common to NSAIDs. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can effectively reduce the pain of osteoarthritis. But they may also lead to stomach issues which may keep you from taking the medicine you need. VIMOVO combines a prescription arthritis pain medication with a built-in medicine that has been proven to reduce the risk of developing stomach (gastric) ulcers.* Medicine on the outside of VIMOVO helps reduce the risk of stomach ulcers.

never be used before or after a type of heart surgery called coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). As with all medications that contain NSAIDs, VIMOVO may increase the chance of stomach and intestinal problems, such as bleeding or an ulcer, which can occur without warning and may cause death. Elderly patients are at greater risk for serious gastrointestinal events. VIMOVO is not right for everyone, including patients who have had an asthma attack, hives, or other allergic reaction with aspirin or any other NSAID medicine, patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in VIMOVO, or women in late stages of pregnancy. Serious allergic reactions, including skin reactions, can occur without warning and can be life-threatening; discontinue use of VIMOVO at the first appearance of a skin rash, or if you develop sudden wheezing; swelling of the lips, tongue or throat; fainting; or problems swallowing. VIMOVO should be used at the lowest dose and for the shortest amount of time as directed by your health care provider. Tell your health care provider right away if you develop signs of active bleeding from any source. VIMOVO can lead to onset of new hypertension or worsening of existing high blood pressure, either of which may contribute to an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke. Speak with your health care provider before starting VIMOVO if you • Have a history of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines • Have heart problems, high blood pressure, or are taking high blood pressure medications • Have kidney or liver problems Review all the medications, even over-the-counter medications, you are taking with your health care provider before starting VIMOVO. Talk to your health care provider about your risk for bone fractures if you take VIMOVO for a long period of time. The most common side effects of VIMOVO include: inflammation of the lining of the stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, abdominal pain, and nausea. For further information on VIMOVO, please see the brief summary of full Prescribing Information, including Boxed Warnings on adjacent pages. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088. ‘This Is My Dream’
W

artist Samir Khurshid arrived in America as a political refugee last year, he came with little more than the clothes on his back and a few paints and brushes. After landing in Oregon in November, he longed to express what was on his mind—and in his heart. All the 32-year-old needed were art supplies and a quiet place to paint. The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO), a Portland group that helped thousands of immigrants and refugees from all over the world last year, treated Khurshid as it does every refugee. He was placed in jobtraining classes, given a $339 monthly stipend and English lessons, and matched with a job-training coach who knew his native tongue (Arabic). Then his amazing story was revealed: As a renowned artist in his homeland, Khurshid was ordered to paint 83 official portraits of Saddam Hussein before U.S. forces ousted the dictator in 2003. After that, Khurshid painted portraits for American soldiers until the Iraqi opposition learned of his work and threatened his life. In 2005, he fled to Turkey, where he lived for five years awaiting asylum, earning his living by painting but seldom signing his work for fear of being deported. Though Khurshid brought little from Iraq, he was able to keep a few paintings. One is a large canvas,

which he keeps rolled inside a packing tube. Although the painting is unfinished, it is precious to him because it depicts his mother and father. “When I paint, it means they are with me,” he said. “I see their faces while I am doing them. It’s them. Here. With me.” As more people at IRCO learned of Khurshid’s history, the desire to provide him with art supplies spread. His former caseworker, Ahmed Abimohamed, introduced him to the City Club of Portland, which offered to hang his new paintings.
Abimohamed told him, “Your fingers are gold in this country.” Because his stipend barely covered living expenses, Margaret Malarkey, director of community and donor relations for IRCO, bought him paint and brushes out of her own pocket and commissioned a few paintings. Khurshid, who for years had been told what to paint, could not believe Malarkey when she said he could paint whatever he wanted. Then, in February, the Oregonian ran a story about Khurshid’s plight. “Since I came here, I didn’t do much
painting,” he told the paper through an interpreter. “I want to tell the world I miss something when I don’t do this every day…. Always, I think about it. When I sleep: What do you do when you paint tomorrow? It is like a mother who has lost a son— what do I do when not painting?” Portland’s arts community responded to Khurshid with generosity. Donors sent $1,100 in checks and gift cards to supply stores. Twelve patrons commissioned paintings. Brian Wannamaker, who owns Falcon Art Community, a live-work space for artists, gave Khurshid the keys to a studio and apartment in March. (He had previously lived with four other Iraqi political refugees.) “I am always saying, ‘Thank you, thank you,’ ” Khurshid said through his caseworker. “This is my dream. I get everything. Now it is my turn. I work hard. I show everyone my art.” Khurshid’s stipend ended April 1. He’s now trying to live off his art instead of working at the boot manufacturer or food-processing plant that hires local refugees. He hosted his first show in Portland on April 22. “Making a living as an artist is incredibly difficult, even if you are successful,” Wannamaker said. “But it’s certainly attainable. Hopefully, that will prove true for Samir.”

Character Studies
In Out of Character, psychologists David DeSteno and Piercarlo Valdesolo uncover some of the surprising factors that can affect our moral compass. We spoke with Valdesolo about the myth of absolute integrity. We think of admirable people as having “good character.” But what exactly does that mean? Most people think character is a fixed trait—either you’re a good person or you’re not. But it’s more malleable than that. Character is a psychological tug-ofwar between our immediate interests (let me keep the $50 that I found in this wallet!) and our long-term interests (I should return the wallet because then BY THE NUMBERS

Advertisement I’ll gain admiration from my peers). Depending on the circumstances, either side could win out. So why are we always surprised when a “good person” falls from grace? Since we see people in these categories of “good” and “bad,” whenever someone violates his or her category, we’re taken aback. Everyone thought Tiger Woods was a great guy, and then we were shocked by his cheating scandal. Suddenly, we felt his “true self” had been revealed—it seemed like he was never good all along! But we’re all capable of a much wider range of vices and virtues than we think. You make the point that it’s impossible to be “good” all the time toward all people. How do we pick and choose who deserves our “best selves”? Our research has shown that we tend to direct our vice toward people who are different from us and our virtue toward people who are similar—even if those similarities are trivial. But if we step back and consciously try to see how other people are similar to us, it can trigger virtuous actions. As soon as you recognize that your moral compass is being influenced by outside factors, that influence can be controlled.

Sunday with... home has 14 TVs, but that’s nothing compared with his culinary gadgets. “I have a vacuum sealer, a sous vide machine, an ice-cream maker, a juicer, a Pacojet machine, and something called a blender,” he says proudly. The host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! talks cooking and gifting with Mary Margaret. “I would make a wonderful wife,” Kimmel, 43, admits.
PARADE You’re clearly a foodie. What’s your signature dish? I make a pretty good pizza. I make fresh pasta, I smoke, I grill. I’d like to try my hand at Chinese food. I once made chicken with broccoli, but it tasted like a frozen dinner.
How did you learn your way around a kitchen? I’m very lucky to have two close friends who are also some of the best cooks in the world—BBQ master Adam Perry Lang and the great pizza chef Chris Bianco. I learn as much as I can from them and read a lot of cookbooks. I own around 300 and use four or five of them. What’s with all the TVs? Believe it or not, I don’t watch a tremendous amount of television. I mostly watch sports, never my own show. I also enjoy Toddlers & Tiaras, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, and anything Gary Busey is on. So you don’t spend Sundays being a couch potato? My girlfriend, Molly, and I usually 22 • May 22, 2011

I don’t have a room so much ass a closet stuffed with gifts.. I don’t have much time to shop, so I buy gifts online and store ew them like a squirrel. I have a few ull Slanket blankets and a toolbox full of Mighty Putty. You feature a lot of family on your show. How do you choose who gets to go on? d My cousin Sal, Uncle Frank, and A Aunt Chippy are regulars. Myy brother, parents, and an occa-sional other cousin appear everyy once in a while. I have a general rule: If you ask to be on the show, the answer is no. I am much more interested in unwilling participants. How do you get celebrities to make fun of themselves? I think the trick is our track record. We have a solid history of making funny and popular videos.
Sometimes celebrities say no, but that usually has to do with schedules. Everyone wants to be funny. Do your kids think you’re cool? I’m pretty sure my kids [he has two, ages 19 and 17, with ex-wife Gina] don’t think I’m cool. Their friends might, but I think that has more to do with making them laugh than being on television. What’s it like being the first stop for axed Dancing with the Stars contestants? They get to my show an hour after being eliminated. Some cry; a few ome are too upset to talk. For ssome rt reason, once you start V, ballroom dancing on TV, you don’t want to stop. I watched my friend Adam Carolla [right] transform into a crosss between Joel Grey and Brian Boitano. Who’s on your dream guest list? Oprah and a tube of sugar cookies. Y legs look great in your show’s Your m mock workout videos.
