He kept saying, ‘I’m gonna die,’ and that ate me up because he had a 4-month-old daughter he had never seen.” Harris promised that if he made it home, he’d ﬁnd Eisenhardt’s wife and daughter and tell them how he died. Those were the preInternet days, though, and Harris was unable to locate them. It wasn’t until 60 years later that he made good on his vow. Jennifer Bowen, a reporter from the Belleville NewsDemocrat in Illinois, heard Harris’s story and tracked down Eisenhardt’s daughter, Bea Harrison, in Pennsylvania. “It overwhelmed me that there was someone who knew my dad,” Harrison recalls. On May 3, the two ﬁnally met. “I told Bea her father was a good man doing a dangerous job,” Harris, 81, says. “Everybody in the company liked him.” At the end of the visit, he told her: “I’ve waited 60 years, but it feels so good to do what I said I would.”

Not that his castmates from Men of a Certain Age are very impressed. “Hey, careful of your back, Ray,” Scott Bakula, 56, teases. “Yeah,” says Andre Braugher, 48, “we don’t want you to tweak anything.” Romano, 53, puts down the ball. “You’re probably right,” he says with a smirk. “I should go check my blood pressure.” Who’d have thought the guys from Everybody Loves Raymond, Quantum Leap, and Homicide: Life on the Street would reinvent themselves as poster boys for the midlife set? On Men of a Certain Age, a drama (with laughs) now in its second season (TNT, Wednesdays, 10 p.m. ET), the three actors play old college friends balancing the joys—and joint problems—of middle age. You guys all look great. How do you feel personally about the passing of the years? BRAUGHER: I

love my geezerhood. Time only ďŹ&#x201A;ows in one direction, as far as we know. You have to go with it, because these are the only times weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got. These are the good times. No, I do not look as good as I did at 26, but guess what? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not 26. ROMANO: I think I have more of a degree of dreadâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not even 50 yet, Andre. I do the numbers in my head and go, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe this is happening.â&#x20AC;? BAKULA: Aging is a state of mind. Happily, because we all have young kids, that keeps us young. [Bakula and actress Chelsea Field were together for 14 years before marrying two years ago. They have two sons, and Bakula has two older children from a previous marriage. Braugher and actress Ami Brabson have been wed for 19 years and have three sons. Ray and Anna Romano have been married for 23 years and have four children.] Maybe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m kidding myself, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a trick that works for me. BRAUGHER: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not kidding yourself. You just have to be careful. A couple of years ago, I came home and my kids were playing basketball. I jumped out of the car and started playing. Next thing I knew, I had a fractured ankle.

Sounds like a moment plucked from the show. How much of Men of a Certain Age is drawn from your own lives? ROMANO: Unfortunately, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a

lot of me in my character. On Raymond, we wrote what we knew, but we sitcomized it, so things came out in a bigger, broader way. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not saying Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m playing myself here. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not. But things deďŹ nitely come up. BRAUGHER: Like being invisible. ROMANO: Yeah, we did a little run on the show about the fact that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an entire generation of women for whom guys like us donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be at a stoplight next to a woman in another car. In the old days, I might have gotten at least a slightly illicit glance back. But now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing their grandpa. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re completely invisible to them. Imagine if you werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t famous! ROMANO: Yeah, at

least give me that! I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even get â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the old guy from TV.â&#x20AC;?

What is GARDASIL? GARDASIL is a vaccine (injection/shot) that is used for girls and women 9 through 26 years of age to help protect against the following diseases caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV): • Cervical cancer • Vulvar and vaginal cancers • Anal cancer • Genital warts • Precancerous cervical, vaginal, vulvar, and anal lesions GARDASIL is used for boys and men 9 through 26 years of age to help protect against the following diseases caused by HPV: • Anal cancer • Genital warts • Precancerous anal lesions The diseases listed above have many causes, and GARDASIL only protects against diseases caused by certain kinds of HPV (called Type 6, Type 11, Type 16, and Type 18). Most of the time, these 4 types of HPV are responsible for the diseases listed above. GARDASIL cannot protect you from a disease that is caused by other types of HPV, other viruses, or bacteria. When I was growing up, my parents would make us kids pretend we had glue stuck to our bums to keep us at the dinner table. Whoever stayed put the longest was crowned the winner for the night. Now I do the same thing with my children, a 3-year-old and an 8-year-old. Kids, at least boys, are always jumping up and down. But on taco

Chicken Tacos 1 cup brown rice 2 cups chicken broth 1 can black beans 1 onion, sliced into thin strips 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 4 chicken breasts, cut into strips 1 package taco seasoning 8 ﬂour tortillas (6–7 inches) 1 cup shredded lettuce 1 cup shredded cheese 1 fresh avocado, sliced

1. Cook rice according to package directions, using chicken broth, not water. Heat beans on low. 2. Sauté onion in olive oil on medium-low, about 10 minutes. 3. Add chicken; cook on medium until meat is cooked through. For last 2 minutes, brown on high. Mix 2–3 Tbsp taco seasoning with a little hot water; add to chicken. Simmer on low, 1 minute, stirring until mixed. 4. Heat oven to 250°F. Wrap tortillas in foil. Place in oven 15 minutes before dinner to warm. 5. Serve chicken, rice, beans, lettuce, cheese, and avocado in small bowls. Other add-ins to try: scallions, tomatoes, red onions.
