You’ve called your Christmas album the most important of your career. Why?

inspired me was Bing Crosby’s Christmas album, which played in our house every holiday season. It was my introduction to jazz and melody and to emotion connected to music. It was a very small part. I was a sailor. I just needed the money—my singing career was nonexistent at that point.

Tell us about your worst pre-fame gig.

I did singing telegrams, but I wasn’t very good because I don’t have a big, loud voice. There were times I didn’t get paid. It was tough on the ego. What do you always take with you on tour?

I’m trying to learn Spanish, so I have my Spanish for Dummies book. And my wife bought me this little stuffed pig that she thinks looks like me—and it does, which is weird—so I bring that for good luck. He’s always there when I walk into my dressing room, looking at me with these big, sad eyes. How do you spend Sundays?

I’ll hang with Grandpa and his buddies at the local McDonald’s and talk hockey for hours. And I like to cook at home. I make a really nice asparagus risotto, and ﬂan with dulce de leche. Your songs are often played at weddings. What did you choose for the ﬁrst dance with your wife?

“You Make Me Feel So Young” by Frank Sinatra. Then we had one of her favorite singers, Ricardo Montaner, do a set. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had in a night. Do you want to have enough kids for a hockey team?

I hope not! Watching my best friend with his newborn, I think one is enough. This poor guy doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going. I went to see him the other day and he had poop all over him—and he was happy! I was like, “Wow, I can wait for that.”

When it comes to human papillomavirus (HPV), females are only half the equation. There are 30 to 40 types of HPV that will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

What is GARDASIL? Sitting down with him at the warm, spacious home of his son Tagg last month, I saw two sides of Mitt Romney. During our interview, there was the pragmatic CEO who surrounds himself with strong people, including Democrats, and considers every angle of an issue before making a decision or answering a question. Instead, Mitt wrote a letter to the hotel telling them he was upset with the staff, and then he faked a reply saying, “We’re so sorry. We ﬁred that person.” The trooper thought he was responsible for someone being ﬁred. Everyone else was in on the gag. That’s how Mitt got him. When my mother was 11, she moved to Paris with my grandparents, who sent her to boarding school in Switzerland. But she always returned to Paris for Christmas, and my grandparents’ French chef would make creamed chestnuts for the family. My mother loved them, and eventually she learned how to make them herself. Those chestnuts have remained part of my family’s holiday meal ever since. I grew up in Los Angeles, and we often spent Christmas there with relatives. Wherever we were for the holidays, my mother would make the chestnuts. Now that I have kids of my own, I love having this dish for Christmas dinner. It always makes me think of fireplaces and Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Songg (Chestnuts Roastingg on an Open Fire).”

P“Some people want creamed chestnuts sweeter, and some want them saltier. They have a bit of a sweetish taste, but the salt will give them an extra kick.”

1 (15.5-oz) can French chestnut puree 1½ sticks salted butter, melted and still warm 1½ cups heavy cream or half-and-half, plus more as needed ½ tsp salt, or to taste 1 (14-oz) can whole chestnuts in water, for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Spread chestnut puree in a large, lightly greased baking dish. 3. Stir in butter and cream; mix well. If mixture is too thick, add a couple more tablespoons of cream. Bake for 45 minutes. 4. Transfer puree to a

large bowl. Beat in salt using an electric mixer. Spoon into a serving bowl. 5. Drain whole chestnuts. Arrange on top of puree and serve. SERVES: 8 | PER SERVING:
