Q I’m loving Elizabeth

Q Criminal Minds is a very interesting show.

Banks on 30 Rock. She has such great chemistry with Alec Baldwin. Do they get along in real life?—Sue Chuang, Los Angeles, Calif.

So why don’t the actors—Joe Mantegna and Thomas Gibson especially—get nominated for Emmys?—Cindy Lachin, Rockville, Md.

A “Get along” would be

putting it mildly. “Alec Baldwin is my blue-eyed husky—I just adore him,” Banks feels like a major-leaguer now says the actress, 36, who also hit it off with Russell Crowe in The Next Three Days. “Working with both of these guys is like getting called up from the minors to play in the big leagues. That’s how I feel: I got the call, I’m in the game, and I’m having the time of my life.”

Q Does Mark Valley perform his own stunts on Human Target?—J. Chase, Las Vegas, Nev.

A Many of them, yes. Val-

ley, who’ll turn 46 on Christmas Eve, doesn’t mind getting his feet wet—as long as they’re Valley prefers thrills to chills warm. “For me, the toughest stunt wasn’t jumping from a helicopter or even fighting five other guys,” he says. “It was when I ended up in the water with a T-shirt on. I wasn’t faking hypothermia—it was freezing!”

Q Olivia Wilde looks superbuff in the Tron: Legacy trailer. How did she bulk up?—Ry Clancy, Chicago, Ill.

A “I had to do an incredible amount of cross-training and martial arts,” Wilde, 26, reveals. “Suddenly I had all these Tough-talking muscles, and I thought, Oh Wilde my God, if somebody jumped me while I was walking home, I could take them! Maybe not true, but I felt that way, and that was part of figuring out who my character was. That kind of inner strength affects the way you stand, the way you walk. It was extraordinary.” 2 • December 19, 2010

A “I think sometimes we fly under the radar,” says

Mantegna, 63, who plays David Rossi. “But the fans love the series. I’ve been in the business for over 40 years, and I’m probably reaching more people now than I ever have. That’s the power of TV.”

A In fact, she did: “Cruisin’ ” was on

the soundtrack for the 2000 movie Duets. “I love to sing, so it was fun to pretend to be a pro,” she told us when that film was released. These days, though, Paltrow’s not just pretending. Thanks to her appearances on Glee and at thee has CMAs, the Country Strong star, 38, h more than proved Paltrow: Something ing her pipes. to sing about

accomplished Amy Roloff on Little People, Big World. Why did they decide not to come back for another season?—Jean Zorzoli, Ashland, Miss.

A According to Matt, it’s just time to move on.

Q Are the people on courtroom TV shows compensated for their time? Do they have to pay if they lose the case?—Fran Gonda, Conneaut, Ohio

A “If we want the case badly enough and the per-

son doesn’t want to travel, we might offer them a hundred dollars for the hassle,” reveals TV judge Alex Ferrer, 40. As for restitution, he says, “When you sue somebody and win in real life, you get a piece of paper you may never collect on. We write you a check on the spot just for bringing the case to us.”

Walter Scott asks…Jessica Alba

Actress, 29, co-starring in Little Fockers WS What was it like being the new kid on set? JA It was a pinch-me moment. Robert De Niro is such a great

guy, and Dustin Hoffman is hilarious—he actually gave me pointers on how to be playful. My goal every day was to try to get Ben Stiller to laugh during a scene. WS Besides Dustin Hoffman, who inspires you? JA Lucille Ball was my hero growing up. Now it’s my 2-yearold daughter, Honor, because when I’m with her I’m not self-conscious. I’ll do whatever it takes to get her to giggle. WS Has becoming a mom changed your career goals? JA Making my family happy is the only thing I really care about. I love my job, but it’s not the reason I get up in the morning. I get up to make my daughter smile. Have a question for Walter Scott? Visit Parade.com/celebrity or write Walter Scott at P.O. Amy Adams

Unwrapped She has a new movie (The Fighter), a new baby (Aviana), and a new focus on the things that matter most BY ROBERT MORITZ

A

my Adams is still thoroughly enchanting. Let’s just state that for the record right here and now. In her black skirt, red chiffon top, and purple pumps with the fourinch heels that levitate her to the 5-foot-8 stature she believes God actually intended for her, she remains the irresistible charmer who played a princess in the 2007 hit Enchanted. Still, several things are remarkably different about Adams today—starting with her latest film, a 180-degree turn from the sweet-tempered roles she’s best known for. In The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale— the true story of junior welterweight boxer “Irish” Micky Ward, whose memorable bouts in the early 2000s made him the pride of Lowell, Mass.— she plays Ward’s girlfriend,

Charlene, a whip-smart, nononsense, working-class barmaid who can land a few punches of her own in a street brawl. “You don’t mess with Charlene,” says Adams. “She says what she means, and I love that.” But the most significant change in the 36-year-old actress’s life happens to be teething in the room next door at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons Hotel. In May, Adams gave birth to Aviana, her daughter with fiancé and fellow actor Darren Le Gallo. Now she’s looking forward to celebrating her first holiday season as a mom. “There was always a lot of energy around my house during the holidays growing up—a lot of food, a lot of football. The whole season has a magical feeling for me that I don’t think ever goes away,” says this middle child of seven kids, who grew up mostly in Colorado and whose parents split when she was 11. As she does every December, she’ll call her dad to get the recipe for the family’s traditional Banana Ice (a frozen whipped concoction featuring bananas, orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, ice, and Sprite or 7-Up). This year, she’s also looking forward to starting some new traditions: “Just little things, like a certain candy in a certain dish,” she says. “I find that it’s the simple things that remind you of family around the holidays.” Adams realized she was starting her own family one morning when she tugged at her refrigerator door. “I saw almond milk in the fridge—Darren drinks it, but I’d never tasted it—and it triggered an animal response,” she recalls. “I was like, ‘I need that,’ and I drank continued December 19, 2010 • 5

the entire carton in 10 minutes. I looked at Darren and said, ‘I think…yeah, I’m pregnant.’ ”

She describes the months that followed as one of the most liberating periods of her life. “Being pregnant finally helped me understand what my true relationship was with my body— meaning that it wasn’t put on this earth to look good in a swimsuit,” she says (though anyone who saw her 2008 pictorial homage to Rita Hayworth in Vanity Fair might disagree). “I was like, ‘Look, I can carry a baby! I’m gaining weight right, everything’s going well.’ And I’ve had that relationship ever since.” Since the birth, she adds, “I’ve been working out when I can, and I’m trying to eat in a healthful way, but losing weight is not my number-one priority. It’s part of my job to return to some semblance of what I was before. But I don’t feel I’ve ever made my career on my rockin’ bod.” It’s this kind of forthright, level-headed attitude that has made Adams such a relatable star—and it’s one reason director David O. Russell wanted the two-time Oscar nominee (for Junebug and Doubt) to play Charlene in The Fighter. “She’s the last person you’d think of for this part,” he admits.

“But she’s fearless, and it’s great to see her bring her sweetheart qualities to a very strong girl who’s going to say the tough things and help the guy in the tough situations.” The role required Adams to wear short shorts and a crop top for the bar scenes and lingerie in the bedroom with Wahlberg. “David said, ‘This is kind of how we see her dressing,’ ” she recalls, “And I said, ‘I’m getting in a gym, ’cause there’s no way I’m going to end up not looking my best.’ ” But Russell KO’d that impulse, telling her he didn’t want her to look like an actress who’d gotten in shape for a role. “He said, ‘I want you to look like a girl who drinks beer,’ ” the actress recalls with a laugh. Adams’ discovery that she was pregnant, just as she finished filming The Fighter, brought back memories of her role as an expectant mother in Junebug— not all of them pleasant. “Because of how that film ended”—with a delivery-room stillbirth—“a lot of women have talked to me about their own similar experiences and how much that character touched them,” she says, clearly moved. But “having played somebody who went through that, I was terrified.” To combat her anxiety, she threw herself into research. “That’s how I prepare for anything— I read whatever I See more can get my hands photos and behindon, talk to people. the-scenes video of I’m a bit of a nerd Amy Adams’ shoot at like that.” She took Parade.com /adams. birthing classes with Le Gallo, who provided the support she needed for a natural, drug-free delivery. “He

The Shoestring

who aren’t on the radar of the large aid groups. One day in Kolkata, India, a rickMeet three shaw ferrying Gold Americans who’ve been broke down, and the inspired into action driver wept. An inby Gold at Parade.com terpreter explained /shoestring. that the vehicle was the man’s livelihood and home. Gold paid a mechanic $40 to repair the rickshaw and requested that the driver use it once a month to transport others in need. In Gyantse, Tibet, he saw a girl struggling with a large cart, which held her paralyzed mother. Thanks to him, the mother has a wheelchair and the daughter goes to school. “Someone once asked me if I was playing God,” Gold says. “The people I help don’t ask questions like that. They only know a stranger is willing to help them.”

W Marc Gold rejoices with students at a Tibetan orphanage school in 2008 after telling them they’d be receiving 10 donated soccer balls.

He raised $2000. Today, his donors —through his nonprofit, 100 Friends—exceed 4000. But outside of keeping them informed with a newsletter, he sends no mass mailings and has no paid employees. His mantra is simple: “You give it to me, and I give it to them.” Five years ago, Gold pared down his belongings to a few duffel bags and boxes. Formerly a teacher in San Francisco, he works out of a Bangkok hotel room and lives off retirement savings and a modest pension. He keeps his expenses— which may include hiring a transla-

tor or a van to deliver, for instance, the tools to help a young man open a bike-repair shop—low. When he meets someone, Gold sits down to chat and maybe shares a cup of tea. Mostly, he listens. He has a knack for spotting people

With Gold’s small donation, a widow was able to buy a sewing machine and start a business

hile Gold has helped pay for the building of some schools and libraries, the bulk of his giving is small. Rather than expand, he encourages others to become shoestring philanthropists, sharing his experiences and contacts and often giving them their first $100. Arlene Butler, a social worker and minister from Cape Charles, Va., heard about his work in 2006. “I’d saved $300, so I called Marc and asked if he’d help me give it away,” she recalls. Instead, he gave her advice, so she sent out e-mails seeking donations, netting $3000. That year, she went to Thailand and gave the money to sick children. “Now our kids are involved in our philanthropic travel. In Panama, we helped fund the education program of a tribe in the jungle,” Butler says. “It changes you inside when you have a chance to do these things.”

is the season to give, and few people embody the spirit of altruism better than Marc Gold. For 22 years, he has trekked through Asia handing out money to the needy in small amounts, as little as 50 cents and rarely exceeding $500. But even though the dollar figures are small, the impact is big. In Vietnam, a modest donation was enough for a widow to buy a sewing machine and start a business. In Aceh, Indonesia, a fisherman fixed his boat and returned to self-sufficiency. Compared with global aid organizations and their billion-dollar budgets, Gold’s operation is tiny, but by his own estimate, he has touched over 50,000 lives. An energetic cross between Santa Claus and Johnny Appleseed, Gold, 61, spends four months a year raising funds in friends’ living rooms and the rest on the road finding more individuals to help. In 1989, while touring India, Gold met Thinlay, a Tibetan refugee, who invited him to his home. Thinlay’s wife, Tsering, welcomed him but kept holding her ears— she was suffering from a painful, deadly infection. Gold found her a physician and bought the antibiotic she needed. It cost just $1— and saved Tsering’s life. Then Gold spent $35 on a hearing aid so she could return to work and her son could go to school. “When I pressed the switch to turn on the hearing aid, her burst of joy burned into my brain,” Gold recalls. “I was thunderstruck, realizing I could restore her hearing for a relative pittance. I thought you had to be wealthy to do such things.” Returning to the U.S. with a new sense of purpose, Gold wrote to 100 friends, hoping to raise $200 to give away on his next trip.

was really calm,â€? she says. Le Gallo has also turned out to be “a great swaddlerâ€? and helpmate in managing the work/ parenting balancing act. The couple, who met in acting class, have been together nine years, but the birth of their daughter has deepened their relationship, Adams says. “Now we understand the importance of teamwork. And if we have a disagreement, we work toward a solution.â€? They have a policy of never spending more than two weeks apart. For example, when Adams went to New Orleans in August to ďŹ lm an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, Le Gallo and Aviana joined her for the 11-day shoot. At home in Los Angeles, they share baby night-shift duties and have a dinner date once a week. As for a wedding, she says it’s going to happen but isn’t sure exactly when—she hasn’t been able to wrap her head around the planning process. Mostly, Adams says, she’s been learning to focus on the moment and not be too hard on herself. “The best advice I’ve gotten as a parent is, ‘You’re not gonna be perfect‚’ â€? she says with a chuckle at the understatement. “Take today—she’s teething and I want to be in there with her. But I also want to do a good job here for everybody who worked on the ďŹ lm.â€? She pushes back a lock of her naturally strawberry-blond hair. “I actually love my work more now, ’cause I feel if I’m going to be away from her, I’d better enjoy it. I’m trying to be more present in each moment of my life. She’s taught me that.â€?

Sunday with...

Chris O’Donnell It’s a wonderful life: five kids, great partners (onscreen and off), fun with LEGOs, and…the Boss!

C

Chris O’Donnell even apologizes for not mustering a short answer to a short question. We forgive the 40-yearold actor the occasional ramble, because his day job, chasing down criminals on NCIS: Los Angeles, is calm compared to the kiddie-land chaos at home. O’Donnell and wife Caroline wrangle a brood of five. “On Saturday morning,” he says, “it’s like we’re shot out of a cannon.” Family weekends begin—no joke— with four soccer games, two football games, and a riding lesson. “My wife and I split up and cover the town,” he explains. “All day we text each other scores.” No wonder the former Boy Wonder can only talk while he’s at work. That’s where Kate Meyers caught up with him. PARADE Are your Sundays

calmer than Saturdays? Sunday is payback to my wife for the rest of the week, so I usually pick up the baby and then get the full spread going—Swedish pancakes, maple-syrup-flavored sausages, bacon, and fresh orange juice. We try to get to 9:30 Mass as often as possible. Then at this time of year we race home for the Bears game, which is must-see TV in our house. We TiVo the first half and watch the second half live. Afternoons, we tend to go to the beach. That’s quite a routine… I am an incredible creature of

habit. If I go to a restaurant and order something and love it, I’m going to stick with that for years. Do you have a routine for your weekdays, too? On my commute to work, I play Howard Stern. It’s like an addiction. When he goes to a commercial, I switch to sports talk radio. If I have a late start, I drive the kids to school. They bop between hit stations until I’ve had it. Then I’ll say, “You know what today is? Today is Daddy’s turn.” What music plays when it’s Daddy’s turn? Every time I ask my kids, “Who’s this?” they know it’s either Bruce Springsteen or Jimmy Buffett. They’re my guys. I want my kids

to know all the Springsteen songs. I’ve seen him all over the world. Have you ever met him? I have. It was surreal. This one time, I was with a buddy in Portland and a stage manager aid, “Hey, do do recognized me and said, you guys wanna comee back and meet Bruce?” Bruce comes over in his terry-cloth bathrobe, and he’s like, “Hey, Chris,, how you doin’? Come on in. Have a drink.” And he says, “What do you want?” and I say, “What are you having?” and he

says, “Let’s have some Jack.” So I’m just drinking straight Jack Daniel’s with Springsteen in his dressing room. He was so nice. It was too perfect. Continuing in a musical vein, ho how’s it going with rapper/ ac actor Todd Smith (a.k.a. L LL Cool J), your partner in cr crime-fighting? He’s super-positive and incredibly confident but very humble. It’s funny—you work with ssomeone on a show like this and you feel like you’re in anothe another marriage. We laugh about it it. In the morning we go to

What’s the best part of working on NCIS: Los Angeles? I’m not gonna lie to you. It’s kind of fun to go around shooting people and ripping around in cars. I watch my kids at home running around playing cops and robbers. I’m doing the same thing on TV—and getting paid. Do you have a hidden talent? My kids think I’m pretty good at LEGOs. I can also drink a beer off my forehead without using my hands. I learned that in college. It wasn’t my major, but I did learn it there. What else do you love to do with your family? Grocery shop! The kids love to go to Target or Costco with me, because they know I’m obsessed. I have to walk down every aisle. They know I’ll say, “Yeah, throw one in.” They’re like, “Daddy, we don’t need one of those,” and I’ll say, “Yeah, but it’s probably good to have another one.” When I was a kid, we’d do a big shop on Saturday. You know, Mom and Dad aren’t looking, and you’re piling Cocoa Puffs into the cart. Visit us at PARADE.COM

SundayDinner

Corny? You Bet.

Suspense novelist Dean Koontz offers a holiday side dish to make your heart swoon

“At holiday meals, each person at the table tells a story about a relative or friend— even a pet—who has passed on. Remembering is a way of keeping them in our lives.”

cle

I fell in love with my wife, Gerda, in high school. Her wit, intelligence, beauty, grace, and humility won my heart in the first 10 minutes of our first date. My enchantment grew when she invited me to Sunday dinner with her family—and one of the side dishes that she contributed was baked corn. Baked corn! I had fallen in love with a goddess! All these years later, I remember no other food at that dinner besides the corn. The sight of the thin crust, golden overall and golden brown in places, brought tears of joy to my eyes. I can recall the precise aroma of that delicious dish on that long-ago evening. I’m sure that Gerda smelled wonderful, too, but her baked corn was an olfactory triumph. Gerda and I recently celebrated our 44th anniversary. Her many fine qualities have been the glue that keeps our relationship strong. But if you’re young and hoping for a long marriage, a good baked-corn recipe cannot be overvalued.

“We roast a turkey each year, so at some point during dinner, we ‘roast’ one another, too. Being able to laugh at yourself fosters humility.”

The Best Baked Corn “The flavor, the texture—this is what God expected when He sat down at His table.” 1 cup milk 2 Tbsp butter 1 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbsp flour 1 15-oz. can of corn (whole and drained) 2 eggs (well beaten)

Boil 3/4 cup milk with butter and sugar. Dissolve flour in 1/4 cup milk. Pour flour mixture into milk mixture to make a thin white sauce. Add to drained corn in a 1- to 1.5-quart Pyrex loaf pan. Mix in eggs. Bake 1 hour at 400°F.

Koontz’s new novel, What the Night Knows ($28), is out Dec. 28.

Stay Healthy

Now you can help protect both your son and daughter with GARDASIL.

by Emily Listfield

Because HPV disease can impact males and females.

Avoid Holiday

There are over 30 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for 30 women a day in the US (about 11,000 women a year), certain types of HPV lead to cervical cancer.

Weight Gain

Y

es, you can enjoy the season without packing on the pounds. Judith Beck, Ph.D., author of The Beck Diet Solution, offers these tips:

Other types of HPV can cause genital warts in both males and females. It is estimated that each minute in the US, there is a new case of genital warts.

• Follow the 300-calorie rule.

“Don’t restrict yourself unreasonably. Instead, eat a little of what you love. One good rule of thumb: Allow yourself up to 300 extra calories only on days you have special events. You may gain a pound or two, but not the five or 10 you might otherwise.” • Have a party strategy. “If it’s not a 300-extra-calorie day, first fill up on diet drinks. At the buffet, look over everything before choosing, then take moderate portions of the three or four foods you love most. And limit yourself to one alcoholic drink.” • Don’t let one slip-up throw you. “If you eat an extra cupcake,

you probably won’t gain weight. But if you say to yourself, ‘I can’t believe I did that! I might as well eat whatever I want today and start my diet again tomorrow,’ you could gain two pounds overnight. Think of it this way: If you made a mistake and went through a red light, would you continue to go through red lights for the rest of the day? Of course not.” • Don’t write off exercise. “Take every chance you can to get it. Walk up the stairs. Get off the elevator two floors early. Park far away from stores. It all adds up.”

GARDASIL is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. M

Y NAME IS CONNIE,

and I’m a Christmasmusic addict. In just the last hour, Brenda Lee was rockin’ around the Christmas tree, Andy Williams had the hap-happiest season of all, and Bing Crosby crooned “Mele Kalikimaka,” which always makes me want to grab a lei and do the ho-hohula across the kitchen floor. If you don’t know that song, you’ve probably never taken the time to listen to Crosby’s album, best known for its title track, “White Christmas.” Not that I blame you—you never spent the month of December with my parents. I grew up visualizing “the land where palm trees sway,” because “Mele Kalikimaka” was on one of Dad’s favorite Christmas albums, second only to one recorded by Dean Martin. Dad liked Dean Martin since he was from Steubenville, Ohio, which was less than 100 miles from our house in Ashtabula. Dad also liked Dean Martin because he was convinced he sounded just like him, especially when he was singing along to “Marshmallow World.” Whenever my father sang, I went straight for favorite-daughter status by saying, “Wow, Dad, you sound just like Dean Martin.” He’d grin, and I’d pretend not to see Mom roll her eyes and mouth, “Shame. On. You.” I love the holiday season and every corny song that comes with it. So many memories. Take the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s “Linus and Lucy” from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Instantly, I see Snoopy

Family Tree: The author and her younger siblings, Chuckie, Toni, and Leslie, in 1965

and the rest of the Peanuts gang bobbing their heads with their arms plastered to their sides, which is exactly how half the guys I dated danced at wedding receptions. Talk about memories. Christmas was always a magical time when I was growing up, and not just because we had a whole month when Dad stopped yelling at us to turn off the lights. Mom would turn our house into one big snow globe. She was locally famous for her TV-top Nativity scene, which she plopped onto a pile of fake snow and accessorized with an eyepopping assortment of Christmas kitsch.

I love the holiday season and every corny song that comes with it. What are your Top 5 holiday songs? Vote at Parade.com/songs.

Every family on the street had a crèche, but only in the Schultz house could you find red snowmen, green elves, and 14 wise men hanging out with Baby Jesus. One year, Mom decided we needed new Christmas stockings because our old ones didn’t match. She was big on matching, which had a tremendous impact on me. To this day, I can’t trust men who wear paisley ties with striped shirts, because once Mom tugged on my arm and pointed to a guy wearing just such a combo while we were standing in line at the drugstore. “Would you look at that?” she said. “Makes you wonder.” Mom wanted new Christmas stockings, and there I was: 15 and the family whiz on the Singer sewing machine, having six years earlier made a pincushion and a pot holder in my single year with 4-H. To Mom, I was practically Oleg Cassini. “You could make new stockings,” she said. “Think of the pride you’d feel.” Off we went to Woolworth’s, where we bought enough felt to carpet the living room. When I asked if she had a design in mind, she smiled. “Surprise me,” she said. A week later, four new stockings were hanging in the living room when she came home from work. Mom was a nurse’s aide and usually looked exhausted when she walked through the door, but she sure snapped to attention that Friday. “My goodness,” she said carefully, trying hard to smile. “Those stockings are as big as your little brother.” I nodded and immediately agreed that stuffing the little pest into one and letting him hang there until

Christmas was a fine idea. Which turned out to be not even close to her point. For the next six years, my Christmas stocking bulged with oranges, hand towels, and personalhygiene products. “That Santa,” Mom would say. “He thinks of everything.”

I wanted to stop my bone loss. But I did more. I reversed it with BONIVA.*

A Few of My Favorite Things… 1. “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” by Burl Ives, as sung by the snowman in that television classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. In my mind’s eye, I can still see the Norelco Santa riding his electric shaver down snowy slopes, just the way he did during the commercial break in 1965. 2. “Trepak” (“Russian Dance”), from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, performed by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Whenever my husband hears this song, he dances. Every marriage has its secrets. 3. “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” by Bette Midler. I always sing along with Bette and imagine it’s me, not her, pulling off candy-apple-red gloves one finger at a time as fake snow blows through my hair and the crowd roars. Don’t tell me you haven’t had the same fantasy. 4. “Cherry Cherry Christmas,” by Neil Diamond. Neil and I, we go way back. My childhood dog was named Shilo, which makes Neil practically kin. I’m sure he joins me in wishing you a very merry cherry cherry Christmas, and a holly holy holiday, too. —C.S.

All of the many types of virgin olive oils are made from the first pressing. They vary mainly in acidity. The more virginal, the less acid! However, the differences are slight. It’s easy to pay a high price for qualities that you’ll never notice—or miss. “Premium extra-virgin” is considered the finest, but cooking with it is a waste of money. Better to use it as a dip for bread or drizzled onto a special salad. At the opposite end of virgin territory is “semi-fine virgin” oil. It’s good for cooking but lacks enough flavor to be enjoyed alone. Several types of virgin olive oil reside between these poles. To save money, experiment with a small bottle of the least expensive kind to see if it satisfies your needs. December 19, 2010 • 19
