Hoffman reflects on the beauty of longevity at Parade.com /hoffman

The actor, 75, makes his film-directing debut with Quartet (in theaters Jan. 11), a dramedy set in a home for aging opera singers and musicians. Why was now the right time for you to direct? I wanted to direct for years and years, and it’s my own private nuttiness that stopped me from doing it. But I wanted to tell this story. It’s about a retirement home for people who refuse to retire. I understand what it’s like to be someone who is no longer at their peak but still loves what they do. There’s a lot of beautiful music in the film. Do you have a musical background? Yes; I always wanted to be a jazz pianist, but I didn’t have the talent. If God were to bend down and whisper in my ear, “You could be a decent jazz pianist, but you can’t act or direct anymore,” I’d take it in a heartbeat!

t’s 9:45 a.m. and Al Roker bounds up the stairs from the Today show studio at Rockefeller Center to his second-floor office. His energy is striking, considering that the short climb once left him winded. Over the past decade, viewers have watched the 5-foot-8, 58-year-old Roker transform himself: After tipping the scales at 340 pounds, he underwent bariatric surgery in 2002 and within eight months had dropped 100 pounds. Then, five years ago, a family crisis plunged him back into his old eating habits, and he regained much of the weight. But, as Roker describes in his new memoir, Never Goin’ Back: Winning the Weight-Loss Battle for Good (out tomorrow), he has ended the yo-yo cycle at last by revamping his entire way of life and has trimmed down to 205 pounds. Winning that battle has not been easy. Roker, an avowed foodie, has wrestled with his weight since childhood. Still, he was laid-back about his size until age 15, when Bill Cosby’s “Fat Albert” character appeared on TV. “It was the embodiment of me: a fat black guy who is the center of attention and the butt of jokes.” The mortification launched him into a “vicious cycle” of emotional binge eating, followed by

bouts of self-loathing. “[I’d eat, then] I’d get into a funk, so I’d eat more,” he says. No longer. Four years after embracing a healthy lifestyle, Roker is confident he has found a sustainable routine, which he shares in his new book, along with funny, brutally honest stories of his sometimes difficult journey. PARADE spoke to Roker about how he’s finally transformed his body—and his state of mind. PARADE: Your mother cooked for a growing family on your father’s salary as a bus driver. What were your meals like when you were a kid? ROKER: All middle-income families use carbs

to stretch meals, across any ethnic group— whether it’s kugel or rice and beans or macaroni and cheese. I remember having pancakes for dinner. But as kids, we thought, “Breakfast for dinner? This is great.” In the book, you talk about your love of food, especially the comfort foods your mother made for you—grilled cheese sandwiches, vanilla layer cakes. Do you still eat those things?

On occasion I will. My old modus operandi was, if you’re going to have a grilled cheese

and bacon sandwich, don’t have one, have two. If you’re going to have vanilla wafers, you have the whole box. Now it’s two or three. You learn the secret of most normal-weight people, which is I’m full. From the outside looking in, what people see is a successful guy with a wonderful family. So why the need to binge?

I’ve thought about that a lot. Despite having a loving wife [ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts], three terrific children, and a great career, there were times when I perhaps didn’t feel that I was good enough. If I was having a bad day, eating was like selfmedicating. But if you abuse food, you still have to use that substance that you abuse every day. You have to learn to use it responsibly. Chris Christie has talked about that.

Chris Christie did an amazing job during Hurricane Sandy, and everybody talks about him as presidential material. But in the same sentence, they say, “But he’s going to have to lose weight,” because the general feeling is that if you’re overweight, you’re out of control. Although during Hurricane Sandy, you couldn’t have seen anybody who was more in control than Chris Christie. Why do you think being overweight still carries such a stigma?

pregnant with our son Nicky. I said, “Okay, I’m going to have to do something.” After the surgery, you lost 100 pounds. Then fi ve years ago, some of the weight came back on. What happened?

You write in the book that “food became the third person” in your marriage to Deborah. How so?

So you got into secret eating?

Because you’re fat, you feel that everybody’s watching every bite you take. So, you closeteat, and you think because nobody sees you eating, then you’re not eating. You know, if you’re eating a Big Mac in a closed car, can anybody hear you nosh? If I ate only what people saw me eat, I would’ve probably been about 170 pounds. In 2002, you went through bariatric surgery.

BREAKING OUT OF THE “FRIEND ZONE”

Roker on how he wooed his wife, Deborah Roberts—with food About a year after I met Deborah, I was single, and she was, too, so I thought I’d try to woo her. It was time to go big or go home. Great idea, except we were in what I call the “friend zone.” I was smitten with Deborah, but she viewed me as her buddy, her pal. If you have ever been in this situation, you know that it’s probably easier to break out of Alcatraz than to get out of the friend zone. Of course, Deborah said that she didn’t want to “ruin the friendship.” My real fear was that she wasn’t interested in me because I was heavy—that was my usual fallback excuse whenever I didn’t get the girl. As luck would have it, Deborah was being sent on an out-of-town assignment and asked if I would mind

My mom got really sick, and unlike my dad, who was gone before we knew it, her illness dragged on for months. I was out of my routine, commuting [to Long Island] to see her, and AL’S TRANSFORMATION Roker in 2000, two years before his bariatric feeling guilty—either that I surgery (left), and with his wife, Deborah Roberts, in 2012. wasn’t spending enough time Why did you decide to have that procedure? with the kids and Deborah, or that I wasn’t After my father was diagnosed with lung being there enough with my mom. It was cancer in 2001, he was at Memorial Sloanthis perfect storm, and I consoled myself Kettering, and I would go in every day. We’d with food. I got blindsided and, I think, to talk and joke, and then one day he got serious a certain extent, I got cocky. It’s like an alcoand said, “Look, we both know I’m not going holic who’s been sober for 10 years and has a to be here to help you with my grandkids, so drink and says, “Ah, but I can handle it. Just you gotta promise you’re going to lose weight.” one or two, I’ll be okay.” But no, you won’t. Seven days later he was gone. looking after her apartment while she was gone—you know, water her plants, grab the mail. I was happy she asked and more than happy to say yes. This would give me a chance to do a little reconnaissance on her lair and gather some intel. Now, most guys given this kind of access to a beautiful woman’s apartment might have rummaged through her bedroom, looking for lingerie or other personal items. Not me. I rummaged through her kitchen. I opened up her refrigerator and found the three main staples of every single woman in New York. A bottle of champagne. A jar of mustard. A slab of half-moldy cheese. Next, I opened her cabinets, and there was nothing but a stack of carry-out menus and some stale crackers. I opened the oven and there was still cardboard on the racks. What? It had never been used!

I was utterly amazed. Living like this was so foreign to me! My life was centered around food. I could never live with no food in my apartment— not even in New York, where you can get everything delivered in 30 minutes or less. I loved the idea of having a fresh start in someone else’s kitchen, especially a woman whose attention I was trying to get. I stocked her refrigerator and shelves with everything I thought she should have. I bought her milk, orange juice, cheese, eggs, butter, coffee, oatmeal, sausage, bread, cold cuts, fresh Listen to Al read an excerpt from Never Goin’ Back at Parade .com/roker

vegetables—and last, but certainly not least, I put some Häagen-Dazs in her freezer. I stocked her pantry with pasta, tomato sauce, beans, rice, and basic spices. I even left fresh flowers on the table so she’d come back to an apartment that felt more like “home.” Okay, I’ll admit, it was definitely a “move.” And she fell for it hook, line, and sinker. She took me out to dinner a few days later, and we’ve been together ever since. Cue the sirens, the floodlights. Release the bloodhounds and the guards. We have an escape from the friend zone! Somehow, Deborah was able to get past my appearance and see me for the man I was beneath that thick outer layer. She saw me for myself and not as the heavy, jolly weatherman everyone else saw. From Never Goin’ Back: Winning the Weight-Loss Battle for Good (Dec. 31, New American Library)

It was this cloud hanging over us. Deborah is very healthy, exercises, eats well. For all the right reasons, she wants her significant other to be in terrific shape, too, and I was thwarting her at every move. She was frustrated. [For her part, Roberts says the big challenge was “keeping my mouth shut. … You don’t know what to do. You love this person. I felt it was a reflection on me that I couldn’t help.”]

When it comes to human papillomavirus (HPV), females are only half the equation. There are 30 to 40 types of HPV that will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for others who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause cervical cancer in females and other types of HPV could cause genital warts in both males and females. And there’s no way to predict who will or won’t clear the virus. GARDASIL is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases. GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cervical cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients of GARDASIL, including those severely allergic to yeast, should not receive the vaccine. GARDASIL is not for women who are pregnant. The side effects include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Fainting can happen after getting GARDASIL. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child’s health care professional may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff. This may require evaluation or treatment by your child’s health care professional. Only a doctor or health care professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for your child. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Please read the Patient Information on the next page and discuss it with your child’s doctor or health care professional.
