ayden Thorn Hall remembers the day back in fifth grade when he visited a friend’s home. The friend’s parents, who own a restaurant, asked if he’d like to order something to eat from the restaurant. “Just getting offered food like that, that really blew my mind,” said Thorn, now 18. “I’m not used to eating from restaurants, and I didn’t know what to say when they asked me what I wanted to eat. I just ended up getting ribs, and I ended up not eating them, and I felt absolutely horrible,” especially knowing his background. His background, Thorn explained, was one where he was often hungry and so poor that he sometimes borrowed clothes to wear from friends. He was among the region’s top highschool graduates honored this past Tuesday night at 45th annual Southern Illinois Society for High School Achievement banquet, co-sponsored by The Southern Illinoisan. He graduates from Christopher High School. The 195 students come from 34 of the region’s high schools, honored for their scholastic, leadership, community service and athletic accomplishments by staff at their schools. The Southern’s Editor Autumn Phillips and Assistant City Editor Marilyn Halstead presented the students with certificates at the banquet. After graduation, Thorn is headed to Stanford University in California, where he plans to major in psychology before going on to medical school; Thorn, who will be the first in his family to attend college, wants to become a psychiatrist. He said learning he’d been accepted into Stanford, which costs about $70,00 a year, was one of the best days of his life; he was encouraged to apply to the university after receiving information from QuestBridge, an organization that provides scholarships to some of the country’s most elite schools for high-achieving, low-income students of all backgrounds. “That was probably one of the best days because I did not think it was possible,” Thorn said.

Davarae Edmonds: Driven to be successful‌

Davarae Edmonds appears to be as busy as ever in his final weeks before graduation, taking a dual-enrollment English class at Shawnee Community College, helping out with his 8- and 10-year-old sisters, while trying to work at his grandfather’s carpentry business. That’s on top of being an excellent student at Meridian High School, where he is on the Youth Council and BETA club and has played as forward for the Bobcats’ basketball team.

“I just want to prove to everyone that I can be successful.” Davarae Edmonds, Meridian High School senior

either at the Carbondale or Evansville campuses, to pursue pre-med studies. He’d like to enter the medical field, which he believes will provide a job that will help him provide for his current and future families. In addition to his two sisters, he lives with his grandmother and mother, whom he describes as his role model. “I just always had this thing where I want to make everyone happy and proud of me,” Edmonds said, “and I guess that what I’m striving for.”

“I just want to prove to everyone that I can be successful,” said Edmonds, 18. “That’s what drives me the most — that I want to be successful and provide for my family when I get older, so I don’t have to worry about all the things that I have to worry about now.” Edmonds plans to continue his drive at Shawnee, stephanie.esters@thesouthern.com then maybe transfer to SIU, 618-351-5805
