Words From the Wise Writer: Mr. Tyler Saxton | Designer: Audrey Hameister
Dear Brookfield East High School Senior Class of 2020, I’m going to be selfish here and discuss how grateful I am to write this letter, and how you’ve made my four years at East truly remarkable ones. My first year at Brookfield East was the fall of 2016 when you all were freshman. A lot like you, I didn’t know the school very well. I had to learn where the copy room was; I had to learn not to let kids dial 711 “for fun”; I could never remember which key opened which door; and I always forgot which door I parked next to (still have this problem). But one thing that was easy to do at East, was teach. I’ll never forget walking into room 224 on our first day of school in the fall of 2016 ready to teach World History. Every kid was staring at me, silent, and so began the lengthy conversation about the meaning of education a conversation many of us continued to have throughout our four years together. I had over 100 of you in freshman World History that year and got to know many more of you throughout our four years. I truly want to thank you for accepting me from the beginning. You accepted my teaching style, my nature and me as a person. I never verbalized it well, but it meant more than you could imagine. As you are now graduating and leaving the walls of Brookfield East High School, in a unique way,
I too feel as though this is the last chapter in one of my life’s books. We’ve shared many laughs, tears, and stories. There is something really special about a teacher’s fourth year in a building; I got to watch you grow from freshman to seniors. You will always be sincerely and uniquely special to me, and I want to leave you with a few parting words that I wish I would have heard upon the eve of graduating high school, words that would have helped me navigate this crazy, difficult, but oh-so-beautiful world we live in. The world is continually getting more complex, so now more than ever it is important to use many of the skills you’ve learned at East. Think critically and evaluate various perspectives before making decisions or developing opinions. Don’t be a robot who believes the first thing they read or hear. There is much to do in our community and in our country. The tragic death of George Floyd calls on you to be advocates and leaders for equity, respect, and empathy.
“Remember to always choose love and respect over anger and narrowmindedness.”

Remember you don’t have to solve all the world’s problems; live where your feet are and shrink the change. I remember telling a professor of mine in college that I want to change the world, and he replied with a simple,
“Change where you are, and the world will see your example.” Throughout your life, you will meet people with different backgrounds, stories, and experiences. Ask questions, listen to understand, and appreciate the differences you find between you and others. Some of my best friends I met after I graduated from high school and many of you will do the same. Some were from East St. Louis, California, Colorado and some from the middle of nowhere Missouri. I went to all of their homes and met with all of their families; I encourage you to do the same. I found a common theme in meeting all their families: they loved knowing I cared to know what their lives were like and in return, we created enduring relationships.
Promise me you will continue to grow in your academics, but more importantly, as a person.
Many of you will become leaders and professionals as you move forward, and as you find success, be sure to demonstrate humility. In the words of the great Tim McGraw, “always be humble and kind.” Getting through college and/or finding a job that provides success can be very difficult. Let’s face it: difficult times are on your horizon. Embrace that opportunity to grow. Yesterday, my son, Kendrick, was whining because he couldn’t fix his Lego. I told him, “Whining won’t help you get the Lego together; thinking, staying positive, and eventually asking for help will give you your best shot.” As you navigate life and hit bumps in the road, know you have a family here at East that you can always reach out to and use as mentors. More importantly, FIND A MENTOR. They will be your rock when you need it the most.
If you look hard
enough, even in the dreariest of times, you will always see a silver lining.
Think about what you endured in your senior year with COVID and quarantine, missing a typical graduation, dances, etc., see that as motivation to get through difficult times as you grow older. Especially when it comes to sacrifice and committing to what you start, seeing it through to the end. Even in times of tribulation don’t wish it away. Be happy to have another opportunity to prove you are resilient to yourself, family and community. Last couple of thoughts.
Follow your heart in everything you do and live with a purpose
When you live with a purpose, live with confidence and don’t waiver from your beliefs; you will live with very few regrets. I don’t like good-byes so, see you later :) Peace and love, make good choices, and be home by 9…well I guess we can make it 10 now that you’ve graduated!
With gratitude, love and best wishes,
