Mobile prospers as new businesses join the community By TiffanyTHOMAS
The City of Mobile continues to renovate and expand with a bevy of new businesses. While many Mobile shoppers have been delighted by the city’s two new Publix Super Markets, these additions are only the beginning of a new period of development. The next three years will see major growth in Mobile, which was spurred in no small part by the arrival of Airbus. Airbus is the world’s leading commercial aircraft manufacturer with subsidiaries in Beijing, Frankfurt, Hamburg and most recently Mobile, Ala. Mobile will go down in Airbus history as the global company’s first production facility in the United States. Airbus’s A320 family of aircraft, a line of commercial passenger jet airliners, will be assembled at the new Mobile location. Excitement has surrounded

Dunkin’ Donuts and Chipotle Mexican Grill have leased property on Airport Boulevard, as has Whole Foods. While these may seem like small changes, they add a welcome diversity to the typical Mobile restaurant and super market array. Mobile ranks amongst nerdwallet.com’s top ten cities on the rise alongside its fellow Alabama city, Huntsville. The NerdWallet article used a combination of population, median income, and airport passenger traffic to compile its list. Although Mobile has suffered a slight drop in employment, which is expected to change with the new flood of businesses, median income has been on a steady climb upwards.
The Spring Hill College campus receives a makeover By CarolineRODRIGUE
Spring Hill has worked tirelessly to improve campus infrastructure over the past two years; repainting railings around the Lucey Administration Center, replacing signs throughout campus for a uniform look, and touching up lines to denote the various parking spaces. This campus makeover has worked to blend its new modern acquisitions with the architecture and aesthetic beauty of the campus. Spring Hill continues to develop campus with the installation of an updated security feature at the Old Shell Road entrance. This is the only entrance for students and visitors who attempt to enter campus after 10 p.m. on weeknights. In previous years there has been a security arm that blocked this entrance, providing Public Safety with the opportunity to monitor

With the late arrival of the new gate, Public Safety has made several attempts to persuade students to slow down and stop without the forced barricade. “We put out cones which were ignored and run over. We try to have a Public Safety car in place to slow people down, but it’s dangerous to put a guard out there with nothing between them and a moving vehicle.” As of Monday night, a police barricade has been placed at the entrance to encourage slower speeds when entering campus. The new gate is set to arrive in approximately two to four weeks.

The Multicultural Student Union plans exciting events for the fall By GermainMCCARTHY
The Multicultural Student Union has big plans for their upcoming programming year. MSU executives have set a busy and exciting agenda to raise racial awareness and get students involved in cultural-based activities. Spring Hill College is definitely not lacking in clubs and organizations on campus, but the Multicultural Student Union has been quiet for the past couple of years. President Josh Rocha said, “I wanted to give the club a fresh start. I really want to do some special events for students on this campus, and let everybody celebrate their heritage.” Rocha and the members of the MSU have already started to carry out their exciting agenda by kicking off the year with a Hispanic salsa night, hosted on Sept. 19, to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Throughout the last week of September, the Union served hispanic foods
in the dining hall to close out the month. “Next month is Italian heritage month! We will be having student speakers and events to celebrate,” Rocha said enthusiastically. Rocha took an interest in the MSU his freshman year. “I was looking for an organization to get involved in and it appealed to me. There was a lot of room for leadership, and diversity has always been a topic that interested me,” replied Rocha. The club hopes to expand and attract more members with their activity plans for the year. “Our main goal is to go to the international food festival downtown,” said Rocha. The food festival will celebrate its 30th anniversary in November. Make sure to come out to some of the events the Multicultural Student Union will be putting on throughout the year and if you’re interested in joining or participating, contact Rocha for more. information.
SGA starts off strong with a full Senate and new agenda By TiffanyTHOMAS
The Student Government Association is up and active on campus for the 2013-2014 academic year. For those students unfamiliar with the SGA, the goals of the Student Government Association are as follows: to provide services to promote harmony in the college community, to protect student rights, to articulate student responsibility, and to aid in the academic and social development of a progressive campus life. As an organization, the SGA has hosted two events thus far. The first event was
an ice cream social held at McKinney’s on Sept. 1 which gave a sweet start to the new semester. The second event was Spring Hill College’s first ever color run - Purple for a Purpose. The philanthropic 5K raised money to benefit the American Cancer Society. Aside from orchestrating campus activities, one of the SGA’s duties is to allocate funds for other student organizations. To any student looking to start a new club on campus, it is the Student Government Association that will decide how much funding that club receives. Any other required money must be
raised by the club itself. On the SGA’s agenda this year is a reevaluation of the core curriculum, raising awareness for the alumni office, and collaborating with the Chief Information Officer on campus, Margaret G. Massey. The privatization of College Lane is also high on the SGA’s list of priorities. The Student Government Association recently held their induction ceremony, welcoming a number of new members. Vice President Mary Catherine McKinley said, “We have a full senate now and I could not be more excited for the year!”
SHC students spread their love for science to local middle schoolers By AnnaDEWINE
The biology and chemistry departments are partnering up with the Foley Center to offer hands-on help to students at Denton Middle School, providing afternoon tutoring and experimental lab days. Dr. Deborah Fox, associate professor of biology, and Dr. Carolyn Simmons, associate professor and department chair of chemistry, are giving some of their freshmen the chance for an experience that will focus on service as well as learning. Fox’s service-learning course, Biology Community Service, is made up of eight freshman biology majors. Every Tuesday, four SHC students provide one-on-one help to 7th-graders who are struggling with the week’s

They deepen their understanding for the material while generally exposing them to needs for education in the community. They learn how to talk about science, relate to people, and adapt to different learning styles.” Dr. Kathleen Orange, Director of the Foley Center, is equally excited for these two science programs. “These programs show students that service doesn’t just have to be ‘soup kitchen service’,” Simmons said.

First world problems: living in a golden age of television
By AislinnSHEVLIN Student Editor
In 1985, Hurricane Gloria wiped out power at my home on Long Island for eight days. I wasn’t alive yet, but my three older siblings, who were kids at the time, missed a cliffhanger episode of Family Ties with Michael J. Fox, due to the power outage. And they never got to see what happened until years later, when the show was in syndication. Doesn’t that sound like the plot of a horror movie? What if there had been a hurricane during the series finale of Breaking Bad on Sunday? No big deal, you can stream it later. Except you can’t. There is no instant streaming. No
Hulu, no Netflix, no illegal downloads. It’s all too disturbing to imagine. It’s a brave new world out there today. We can miss a show’s premiere, and it doesn’t matter, because we can watch it whenever we have time. When I went out this past Saturday night, I said to my friends, “I can’t wait to watch Saturday Night Live on Hulu tomorrow morning.” And I meant it! We are living in a golden

sible. Accessibility makes it harder to break through all the noise though. Not only are there heavyweight programmers like HBO and Showtime, which consistently produce great content, but on cable there’s also FX and AMC, which brought us Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Now even Netflix is producing original content, and their first original show, House of Cards, was nominated at the Emmy Awards.
I never watched Breaking Bad (I know), but the series finale on Sunday was a national event. It caused a sensation on Twitter and left fans devastated that their favorite show, one of the most lauded shows in history, was over for good. It made me think about how attached we can get to our shows and how personal a show can feel. TV dramas often require a recovery period after each new episode.
sort of get what all the hoopla is about. But it’s not that I was actively boycotting Breaking Bad, I just already have enough shows in my queue, so to speak. Since there are so many great options these days, it really makes picking a show to watch feel like entering a committed relationship. If you’re going to be exclusive, it better be worth it. At the end of the day, TV is a shared experience. Even if we’re watching our shows alone on our laptops, we participate in a dialogue the next day or tweet about them or rant to our friends about a plot twist. It’s nice to know that even in our culture of cynicism, we can all agree that meth addiction is riveting TV and Downton Abbey is an absolute treasure.

Riding Boots
Riding boots are a great fall/winter investment. Dress them up with nice pants or jeans and a cute top, or throw them on with leggings and a big sweater. They’re easy to wear and very versatile.
Scarves
Scarves are probably one of the easiest ways to bring some fun into the sometimes boring fall colors. Whether it’s a tank or a long-sleeved shirt, a fun printed scarf can help make your fall fashion wardrobe pop!
Fun socks
Add some fun high socks to wear with your riding boots! They come in all colors and designs and help express your personal style! They are great to add to a fun day outfit.
Vests
Vests are probably the most conventional clothing pieces in the South. Since it’s not quite cold enough to wear a jacket or coat, pair a vest with a long sleeve shirt and your favorite jeans, and you’re good to go.
Chambray Shirt
That’s right ladies, denim is back and an absolute must have for the fall. They come in many different shades and are extremely comfy to wear and easy to throw on!

How does Sha Sha do it? By DanielOCHOA
Sha Sha Buchanan is a two sport athlete playing on both the volleyball and basketball teams.
Imagine the amount of time and energy required for a student athlete to excel in the classroom and on the field. Now think about having to worry about playing two sports at the same time in addition to a full schedule of classes. Sha Sha Buchanan is a dual-sport athlete here at Spring Hill College, playing volleyball and basketball. These two sports are difficult enough on their own, but are exponentially more challenging since they overlap. This means that both sports are active at the same time. It is very difficult to manage time to study and practice at the same time. Buchanan
stated, “At times it can be extremely overwhelming because I have to be on top of my game at all times and find enough energy to study or finish my homework. Even though I have a tough schedule I just have to make sure I keep up with my school work before I travel or I’m on the road.” Buchanan has been playing basketball and volleyball most of her life so she can adjust to any changes that happen during the season. But being on both sports teams can really take a toll on the body, particularly if you have a long assignment or a project due. Buchanan said, “I have been playing two sports for my entire life so I’m used to
them overlapping. I usually miss about eight to ten games, which is tough because I want to be there from beginning to the end of the season. Transitioning from volleyball to basketball is a little hard on my body. No matter how rough it is on my body, I will always love the game, both of them.” Sha Sha is a very talented athlete and has been managing this routine for many years now. This task does not only need passion, but commitment as well and she has both. Come support the Lady Badgers at the next volleyball game Friday Oct. 4 at 7p.m. against Faulkner University in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreational Center.
