Students display talents on the Hill KatelynGARDNER news editor Spring Hill will host its first Undergraduate Research Symposium where students will discuss their senior seminar projects, classroom assignments, and individual research to other students, faculty members, and friends. The Spring Hill College Undergraduate Research Symposium (SHCURS) will be held in the Gautrelet Room during the Honors Convocation reception on April 13. Students will have the opportunity to present their research to a larger audience on a more personal level through posters, videos, computer designs, and display boards. Everyone is welcome to attend. Jamie Franco-Zamudio, a psychology professor at Spring Hill, explained that research is an important aspect of learning. Franco-Zamudio and Gentry Holbert, Director of the Library and Information Resource Services, are giving students a new outlet which allows them the opportunity to publicly discuss their research, offering the students both education and experience. The Research Symposium will be held during “Undergraduate Research Week.” The goal of SHCURS is to be inexpensive as well as convenient. Parents will already be on campus and those who attend the Honors Convocation will be enjoying their reception as they view the research surrounding them. The major difference between Cool Day and SHCURS is the aspect of one person presenting at a time. At a
Research Symposium, many students are presenting their work to different people at various times. Holbert stated, “It takes the pressure off the students since we are now focusing on research rather than presentation.” Prior to the Research Symposium, students who would like to present their research have filled out an application and are encouraged to post their projects online, if possible. Coming from a research institution, Franco-Zamudio said that by getting involved in SHCURS, students will have the opportunity to build up their resumes and get research experience under their belts, allowing students to receive a competitive edge when applying to graduate schools. SHCURS will be held from 3:45 p. m. to 4:45 p.m., immediately following the Honors Convocation. The Friends of the Library have sponsored a special collections award as well as a print and digital collections award, both valued at $250. These awards will be given to students based off their utilization of the Burke Memorial Library’s research tools. Franco-Zamudio reminds students that everyone from all majors is welcome to present their projects during SHCURS, no matter if you are a freshman or a junior. For more information contact Gentry Holbert at gholbert@shc.edu or Jamie Franco-Zamudio at jfrancozamudio@shc.edu. Don’t miss out on the SHCURS workshops starting next week. Dates are posted online at http://badgerweb. shc.edu/ICS/IR/Research_ Match.jnz.

Badger Brawl gives back Out of 98 donors, 81 units of blood were donated at Monday’s blood drive KatelynGARDNER News Editor
Badger Brawl commenced with a bang during Monday’s blood drive competition held in the LeBlanc Ballroom. Students from Spring Hill College challenged the University of Mobile students to see who could donate the most blood. Whoever wins will receive a trophy along with the honor of beating the rival. The LifeSouth Blood Center accepted donations from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., providing students the opportunity to give blood in between their classes and busy lunch schedules. LifeSouth supplies blood to Alabama, Florida, and Georgia hospitals. Since the number of blood transfusions has increased to five million per year, LifeSouth is in need of over 250,000 blood donations. With such a large number of donations needed, students are crafting ways to get other students involved in the donation process. Jonathan Sealy, Secretary of the Press, said that the Student Government Association wanted to find a way to give back. After looking into other schools, Sealy realized that blood donations could benefit others and still have a competitive twist. Sealy stated, “The blood drive lets the student body give back to the community,” offering a beneficial way to compete during Badger Brawl week. Those who participated in the blood drive gave hope to those in need. Sophomore Britney Jones stated, “Giving blood is not something new for me. I give blood because it’s one way to help people who are sick or injured.” By creating a competitive edge,

So if you missed out, there are plenty of chances to pick up a ticket and be entered into the raffle, just attend any Badger Brawl event. On Thursday, students are encouraged to eat their lunch in the Cloister and enjoy the film “Silence of the Lambs” at noon. Friday’s event is a pep rally at Rydex Commons. Enjoy music, food, and free t-shirts, all starting at 8 p.m. On Saturday, students will start tailgating at 4 pm with the big game held in the Outlaw Recreation Center. The winner of the iPad will be named at the men’s game halftime. This year, Badger Brawl has many things to offer including activities and prizes that any college student would want. Matt Jones is enthusiastic about giving blood and helping out the community and the competition.

As I walk up the stairs to my apartment, I have to carefully step over the broken glass, the crushed Keystone cans, and mutilated Budweiser boxes. You’d think we didn’t have trash cans or something. This unique decoration of the apartment stairwell inspired me for this week’s article. I’m concerned for the student population of Spring Hill. I’m concerned that some of you were dropped on your head as child. Or maybe some of you are just now going through your teenage rebellion stage. Whatever it is you need to grow up and get over it. We’re in college. College is supposed to be the greatest, craziest time of your life. I hope you can fulfill that, but why do people feel the need to be stupid in the process. I’m all for having a good time and I am always up for a game of beer pong or chest bump. But there is definitely a difference between making amazing memories and being destructive and stupid. So get ahead and cross things off your Bucket List like skinny dipping or exploring the buildings/secrets of Spring Hill, but breaking elevator lights and spraying a fire extinguisher is not on my list. So to all the stupid people on this campus I hope you grow up as well as grow out of your rebellion and teen angst stage soon. All you do is ruin it for everybody else. As for everyone else, party on Spring Hill. All I ask is that you find a trash can and stop breaking bottles in front of my apartment.

Let me start first by saying that I LOVE GOSSIP. Anyone that knows me knows that fact. I am not going to delve into the morality of gossip or start dishing dirt, I am just going to explain my reasons behind the passion for gossip. Some of the things I have learned by being around others would absolutely shock and amaze you, such as how they spread information about others. When someone starts talk-

ing about some stuff going down, my little ears instantly perk up. I would say rarely do I pry for the info other then to get the other person on a roll. I know how to listen and not run my mouth. That is the key to being a good gossip is to know enough to get the other person started and watch them spill it all. Let me tell you when certain people, and you know who you are, start telling it makes me feel the most satisfied. I feel it goes to my core some how and allows me to feel special that I know
something which not many others do. In addition to feeling special, it can entertain and bring somewhat distant friends even closer by uniting them under the silent bond of gossip. How many people talk about the opposite sex to warn their friends of bad behavior or a crazy ex? That is gossip too. And I realize that by me going public as a gossip, I am limiting the information I will be privy to now, but come on who doesn’t love juicy gossip from time to time.

Axe vs. Old Spice Body Spray, which one delivers? KeliMAZZA & MattBOSARGE
Axe and Old Spice are competing in the commercial market for male buyers with ads that suggest that their products will make men more sexually attractive. Axe uses over the top ads which contend that bikini clad girls will run through the forest like wild animals or swim through the ocean like hungry sharks all to arrive at a guy spraying himself with Axe. Old Spice approaches their audience differently with an ad of a well-built man riding a horse backwards telling the audience that Old Spice is preferred by women, 100 billion times more often than other brands. Being highly trained in research procedures and putting all the necessary resources that the SpringHillian could muster we decided to put these two products to the test. In the most scientific method on Friday night, February 10, we challenged four guys to test these product claims. Splitting the men into two teams: Team Axe (Ste-
Team Old Spice Cody Lowery Blake Leger
ven Schnell and Pat Sullivan) vs. Team Old Spice (Cody Lowery and Blake Leger) we strongly warned each that they might be overpowered by young females once they were “sprayed”. All you ladies out there, if you were stopped on Friday night and were asked to sniff don’t be offended for it was all for the sake of science. The competitors met up in the New Hall
lobby to be sprayed down and begin their quest to find the answer to whether the commercials lived up to their advertisement. The boys walked around campus looking for unsuspecting females to determine the answer, always on the alert that they might be jumped at any moment. The goal was for the guys to be told they smelled good by as many girls as possible in one hour or for us to have to rescue them from the overwhelming mobs of females who might catch a whiff of their scent. Team Old Spice started out strong in New Hall racking up six votes while Axe struggled to get only two votes. After leaving New Hall, Team Old Spice racked up 13 girls that either claimed they smelled attractive or more attractive than Team Axe. “I just saw a sparkle in their eye when they realized I had Old Spice on,” said Lowery after a long night of dodging girls with the inability to resist his new-found scent. Leger faced the same problem as Lowery, and it
Team Axe
Steven Schnell Pat Sullivan
even forced him to leave his vehicle while driving back to Skip’s Place. “I felt like they deserved to get a whiff of what I was providing,” said Leger when explaining why he jumped out of his truck when passing the apartments. “They were glad I stopped. Most of them wanted to smell me more than once and I can’t really blame them.”
Leger and Lowery both landed some “double-takes” from a few curious girls throughout the night. Lowery, a self-proclaimed ladies man, claims to have worn Axe body spray before and says there is really no comparison with Old Spice. “There is really no doubt in my mind [that Old Spice is better]. Chumps wear Axe. Old Spice is for men.” For Team Axe, Schnell was told by one girl that he smelled delicious when entering a pod. As the hour came to a close Schnell (Axe) would out-smell Lowery (Old Spice), finishing the race with a 35 to 19 advantage. While Axe seemed to have more success around the campus Old Spice seemed to be the favorite in New Hall but to the disappointment of our male subjects there were no mob scenes or hoards of fanatic females. So guys when you are looking for that something special “Axe” yourself if either of these products will really “Spice” up your love life? photos by KeliMAZZA

From celebrities to your best friend, Twitter allows the user to follow their interests through humor and controversial comments. Through today’s new technologies, Twitter users can track their favorite celebrities, shops, friends and events through instant updates on their smart phones. At any given moment, a tweet-a-holic can find out where @Kim Kardashian is having lunch or who @Kanye West is talking smack on. According to twittercounter.com, the top five most followed people on Twitter are @Lady Gaga, @Justin Bieber, @Britney Spears, @Barack Obama and @Ashton Kutcher. To those of you who haven’t

Too many apps and not enough time MaryRIES Lifestyle editor
Nowadays, there is an app for everything. From finding the nearest gas station to posting pictures to your Facebook, apps are changing the way that people communicate and live their everyday lives. With so many apps to choose from, how do you select the best ones? Here are a few of the top apps you may want to check out. shazam- Have you ever been in the car listening to the radio and wonder who is singing the song that is playing? Shazam allows you to hold your phone up to your speaker and after it hears the song, it tells you the artist and song title. Shazam can also be programmed to send the information it obtains and to your iTunes for you to later download the song. OmniFocus- OmniFocus is perfect for a busy person. OmniFocus allows you to program all your errands into it. Then when it is time for you to complete that task, OmniFocus reminds you of it when you are near its location. The program uses GPS and WiFi to track where you are so
that it can remind you when it’s the most opportune time for you to do your task. For example, if you have to pick up your dry cleaning, it will remind you when you are near the dry cleaners. Find My Car!- How many times have you wondered around a parking lot searching for your car? With the help of Find My Car! you will never have to wander around aimlessly anymore. Men’s fashion trends for spring JonathanSEALY Co-Editor
It is never too early to think about updating your wardrobe for the upcoming season. Here are some of the trends men should follow for spring 2011. While it may be cold one minute and hot the next, spring may be a seemingly distant thing. Nevertheless, spring will be here sooner then you think. As with every season, there are specific “it” pieces and not every guy can pull off every “it” look that comes into style nor should they try. Here are some of the wearable spring fashion trends for men to prepare for. Linen is going to be huge this spring. It is a casual look, and it looks great as wrinkled as it can be. Buying yourself a pair of linen pants is a must. Ties should be plaid. Plaid has been around
for a couple of seasons, but this spring, upgrade to bright colors and pair them with a classic, white button down. Bow ties are still in style, but they are sadly on their way out. Jeans this spring should not be blue or black, but rather other colors. Gray, white, and light blue jeans are what are in style this spring. Wearing a colorful tee to balance the subdued color of the jeans is the trend for spring. Try also losing the skinny jeans and go for the a standard loose fit. If you’re daring to be bold, old style doublebreasted jackets will be here, but make sure the jacket has a slimmer cut. It does not have to be as formal as you may think; a pair of jeans with a tee can be a suitable casual look. There are more looks, but these are the most popular men’s fashion trends for spring 2011. Now, we just have to wait for warmer weather.
Broke but not busted: a guide to free films KeliMAZZA Movie Critic
You spent all your money this past Monday on Valentines Day and are in need of getting your film fix. You don’t want to spend your last ten dollars to see a film in theaters or make the drive to a Blockbuster or even hit up a Redbox. If this is the case, then you are in luck because there is a place you can go that is only a short walk away, your own Burke Memorial Library. The library has a variety of films for you to check out for your movie fix from comedies to action, foreign films to documentaries and everything in between. But what makes it even better it is completely free. Are you in the mood for action and adventure this week? Check out “The Bourne Identity” (2002). This is the first of a three film series starring Matt Damon. The film is loosely based
on Robert Ludlum’s novel and tells the story of a man who is suffering from amnesia after being rescued by fisherman. The film revolves around Damon’s character, Jason Bourne, figuring out his identity. Upon discovering his identity, in a bank vault, he finds out he is in the middle of two assassination plots designed by the CIA. This action adventure flick is sure to keep you entertained especially if you are a fan of action and spy movies. If you are looking for something with a more fun and an upbeat feeling, check out the classic “The Breakfast Club” (1985) starring Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall. The film is centered around five high school students who have nothing in common but spending a Saturday together in detention. The film revolves around the students’ growth to understand each other and step outside the stereo-
types that they live on during the regular school week. It’s a fun film for a chill night with friends. If you’re looking for something different, “M” (1931) might just be the film for you. The film centers on a man who has been murdering children in a German city and the police trying to solve these crimes. In the film, the police haven’t had any success in catching the killer. The criminal underworld steps in and begins its own search for the killer in order to try to restore normal crime world order. If you’re looking for a little suspense and something that is not on your typical mainstream film list, take the time to check this film out. If you are looking beyond action movies check out the other films that are available. You are sure to find something that sparks your interest at our own Burke Library. And best of all it won’t cost you a dime.

The Spring Hill men’s basketball team left the University of Mobile earlier this season knowing they were too close to getting a huge road victory against their arch-rival. For Coach Thompson’s crew, close just isn’t going to cut it. “This is the last chance that our three seniors (Sylvester Twiggs, Nick Brown, and Greg Gardner) will have to beat Mobile and they will definitely be ready,” said Coach Thompson before the showdown against Mobile. The main problems for Spring Hill in its first encounter with the Rams this season came late in the game on the offensive end. “We need to get the ball inside to Nick. He’s our anchor offensively. We had trouble scoring late against them last time, but if we can get it to Nick consistently that should help,” said the Spring Hill head coach. Brown has been an absolute force for the Badgers lately. The 6-foot-8-inch senior dropped 30 points on Clearwater Christian College Saturday, snagging 11 boards in the process. On the defensive side of the ball, Spring Hill must contain Mobile’s leading scorer Donte Walker. Walker averages just over 15 points per game for Mobile and according to Coach Thompson, brings much more to the table for his team. “The main thing he brings them is leadership. He’s been in their program for a few years now. We must keep him out of the paint because that’s where he likes to get most of his points.” I think it’s safe to say that Nick Brown and company will be ready to rock come Saturday night at 7:00.
