The Cure 4 Kids Walk raised $3385.89 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this past Sunday, Feb. 27, with the help of students, friends and faculty. Seniors Jessica Edgar and Brooke Turlich organized the one-mile walk around Spring Hill’s Campus, raising money and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. As a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority on campus, Edgar has worked with St. Jude’s Hospital since her initiation. Given that Edgar has background experience with the hospital, the donations were able to go directly to their research funds. Each day, it costs about $1.6 million for St. Jude to care for its patients and run its research programs according
to st.jude.org. The research and hospital facility treats children with catastrophic diseases at no cost to their families. The hospital has treated kids from all 50 states without “denying any child because of financial payment issues,” stated Turlich. Prior to the walk, Edgar and Turlich handed out free t-shirts as well as cancer awareness ribbons to those who participated in the walk. About 150 participants, including students, family members, friends, and faculty, walked towards St. Joseph’s Chapel from Dorn Field then retraced their steps, ending the walk back at Dorn Field. Donations were given in order to participate and both Edgar and Turlich were excited about the amount of funds the event raised. By joining the Cure 4 Kids Walk, students showed their support for St. Jude’s effort in saving the lives of children.

Election results in SGA run-off? As of press time on Tuesday evening, Attorney General Mistich announced a run-off between candidates Jordan Biggers and Matt Jordan to see who takes title as President. KatelynGARDNER News Editor Elections for Spring Hill’s Student Government Association were held this past Tuesday, March 1. Winning the run-off for SGA’s Executive President and VicePresident positions are Jordan Biggers with running mate Kevin Curca-Reilly and Matt Jordan with running mate Max Westendorf. Students will vote today, March 3 to decide who wins the title of SGA’s Executive Presi-
dent and Vice President for the 2011-2012 semesters. For students to run in the election, they are encouraged to attend one of two mandatory informational meetings. Attorney General of the Student Government Association, Tipper Mistich, stated that students were “required to submit an Intent to Run form to the Office of Student Affairs in order to ensure their eligibility to run, which includes a minimum GPA requirement.” However, students do not have to be on the current SGA staff in order to run for office.
In regards to publicizing a candidate, Mistich stated, “There are virtually no campaign requirements; however, it is in the best interest of the candidates to make posters and other campaign literature in order to market themselves to their constituents.” Most students either dorm storm or hang posters in order to provide an adequate campaign of their candidacy. This year, students used Survey Monkey to vote in the elections due to its efficiency. Polls will be open until 11:59 p.m. so remember to vote.
Population increase for graduate school KatelynIKNER editor emeritus
The number of applications to graduate schools has increased by 8.3 percent, according to the annual Survey of Graduate Enrollment and Degrees. This increase in graduate school enrollment is believed to be a result of the recession and the consistently high unemployment rate. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current unemployment rate is at 9 percent. Although, as the next class of college seniors prepare to graduate they are weighing their options between continuing their education or entering the workforce. At Spring Hill College, Career Services Coordinator Elizabeth Dexter-Wilson said students are worried about the job market, which is why many students are increasingly choosing graduate school. “At this point I am starting to see more of an increase,” said Dexter-Wilson. Typically, she said that of the students that come and visit her, about 28 percent of those graduating seniors plan on attending graduate school. However, Dexter-Wilson just completed a survey of the Spring Hill College class of 2010 graduates. This survey shows that of the Spring Hill College students that graduated last year, there is a 10 percent jump in the amount of students who are in or will be enrolling in graduate school. “No, the recession and economy are not the
reasons to choose going to graduate school, but I think that is probably why they are choosing that route,” said Dexter-Wilson. She believes that what someone’s overall goal with their career should be the best reason why someone should continue their education. Though, she encourages those obtaining a liberal arts degree to continue their education. “An advanced degree is probably going to be what you need to get enough skills and qualities to work in that particular industry,” said Dexter-Wilson. Liberal arts majors include: history, psychology, philosophy and theology; which Dexter-Wilson said these majors, “do not necessarily translate into job titles.” Dexter-Wilson recognizes that for other majors graduate school may not necessarily be a must, but rather an independent choice. Majors such as: business, finance and communications; are not necessarily majors that need to further their education for her. “They get a pretty good amount of skills and qualities that you can step right out of a job with a bachelor’s degree,” said Dexter-Wilson. Although, she admits that no matter what someone chooses there are certain skills that can be only be taught on the job. Spring Hill College senior Caitlin Teahan is an integrated communications major who plans on attending graduate school in the fall. Teahan states, “I actually enjoy learning and being challenged in an academic environment,” said Teahan. Teahan
hopes that attending graduate school will help her attain a better job and advance quicker in her chosen career. “I want to be the best in my field and I feel to be the best I need grad school,” said Teahan. Teahan hopes to attend either New York University or American University in the fall. She feels that no matter where she attends graduate school she will be able to attain a job afterward. But, Teahan has another obstacle when it comes to finding a job in the recession. “It is making paying for grad school more difficult but that is why I plan on obtaining teaching assistantships,” said Teahan. “I don’t have a specific job that I’d like to one day obtain. It’s more of what can I do for my field and for those who benefit from it. If I can add something or better either of those at any point in my professional career. I’ve accomplished something,” said Teahan. The other option for graduating seniors is entering the workforce. Which Dexter-Wilson said has a lot of students going into fear mode. Many graduating students fear going into the job market not only because of the economy and recession, but also the mounting competition for jobs. She said that there are many people who have either been laid off and looking for jobs and that proves to be competition for new graduates. “These people have experience so that makes it more difficult for see PoSt-GRAD

Celebration of the Arts honors Black History Month JasmineWilliams Contibutor
On Monday, February 28, 2011 Spring Hill College’s Cultural Impulse Step Team hosted “Celebration of the Arts”, a black history event at 8 p.m. Students presented original poems, spoken word, songs, a performance by a jazz band and black history facts all performed on the stage in the Student Center. Students from both Spring Hill College and the University of South Alabama were in attendance and performed. Cultural Impulse Step Team president Alicia Manzie stated that “The Step Team wanted to inform people in a creative way. Programs like ‘Celebrate the Arts’ are important here because our community at Spring Hill is so diverse. We want to inform other people about African-American culture and the diverse history.” Senior Erica Wright attended the event and stated, “I really enjoyed the singing. The whole event was just so heartfelt it literally gave me goosebumps.” Sophomore Kristin Rogers also attended and said that the singing was her favorite part. Rogers says, “I really enjoy programs like this. More people should come out!” “I love to see Spring Hill doing things for
Black History Month” stated senior Devon Arnold who was also in attendance. “The facts were awesome and Delta Chi and some of the other Greek organizations were out in full force which was great.” Rhonda Lucas, Spring Hill College professor and advisor of the program beamed as she said “It’s about black history, culture and everything that makes Spring Hill a liberal arts college. We had a lot of really diverse groups and a lot of good talent and it was overall a really good program. I was very impressed with the turnout. As an advisor, programs like this really make it worth getting up in the morning. I love teaching, my passion is the students and seeing them do this makes me feel like a proud mother. I know that these students will be successful outside of Spring Hill because I am here.” The Step Team ended the program with a memorial celebrating the life of Spring Hill College student Jessica Sylvester who died a year ago. Jessica’s friends are still collecting money to build a tree in her memorial. Sylvester was a sophomore and graphic design major. Refreshments were served and the Step Team made sure to emphasize its signature acronym S.T.E.P, scholarship, teamwork, evaluation and preparation. Increasing gas prices influence driving KatelynGARDNER News Editor
Freshman Matthew Menesses experiences a significant loss in money as prices at the pump steadily increase to over $4 per gallon in some states.
With gas prices reaching $3.29 per gallon, students are beginning to experience the set back of unexpected expenses. Although the effects may be minor, as the gas spike continues, students will be forced to cut back once gas is in high demand. Whether students are destined for a “cool” spring break location or just trying to make it home for Mardi Gras, everyone is sure to be shocked after they fill up at the pumps. Commuters are feeling the budget cuts at high rates. For the students and faculty
who drive to school, they are witnessing the influx of prices on a daily basis. Sophomore Elizabeth Bridges stated, “I try to make other people drive me around now” since her commute to school accounts for majority of her gas expenses. According to midlandsconnect.com, the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs has some tips on how to save at the pump. First, carpool with friends. Also, try to use cruise control whenever you drive on the highway. Drive the speed limit as well. By slowing down, you save on gas. Remember, don’t carry access stuff when making
trips because “an extra 100 pounds in the trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel economy by up to two percent,” stated the Consumer Affairs Department. In addition, keep up with maintenance by rotating and inflating your tires. Also, be nice to the pedals. Try to avoid hitting the gas and break pedals with excessive force. Moreover, let your car rest with the engine off. Try not to sit idle for long periods. Lastly, use the proper octane levels for your car. See your owner’s manual for specifics. Student artists to celebrate 100th anniversary of St. Joseph Chapel Mobile, Ala.—Spring Hill College student artists will present an exhibition of works celebrating the 100th anniversary of the college’s historic St. Joseph Chapel. The exhibition runs from March 14 - April 10, 2011 in the SHC fine arts center and will coincide with the annual Homecoming on the Hill alumni weekend April 8-10. The chapel’s 100th anniversary celebration began in March 2010 with a special Mass celebrated by Mobile Archbishop Thomas Rodi. Construction began on St. Joseph Chapel when a 1909 fire destroyed the wooden building that housed Spring Hill’s student chapel. The cornerstone for St. Joseph was put in place on June 13, 1909, and the building was completed in 1910. Modified Gothic in style, it is constructed of brick covered with stucco. A red slate roof, amber windows, and creamcolored stucco walls and buttresses are the defining features of the building. The chapel is thought by many to be the most beautiful in
Mobile. St. Joseph underwent its first renovation during the 1970s. The most recent and extensive renovation was completed in 2004. Exterior improvements included a new roof, fresh paint, and the repair of both structural and non-structural cracks. Inside the chapel, a new main altar and baptismal font were installed. The original wood floors and pews were finished and restored, along with the Stations of the Cross. A new lighting system was added to highlight the building’s unique architectural details, and a new organ and state-of-the-art sound system made the transformation complete. A special Website at www.shc.edu/chapelanniversary was created to allow alumni and friends to share their stories and memories of St. Joseph Chapel and post pictures of their weddings, baptisms, etc

new grads to sort of break in,” said Dexter-Wilson. One of the Spring Hill College seniors who is choosing to go into the workforce post graduation is English and philosophy major Kristy Farley. “I know that at this point in my life right now I really need real work and world experience, so that I can grow and fully cultivate that side of my life,” said Farley. Farley wants to earn a living that will sustain her life. Farley cannot deny that she is a little intimidated by the current recession. “I feel like companies are narrowing the scope of who they are willing to take in even for entry level employment. Even though Farley is not going directly into graduate school does not mean she is not considering it. Farley’s decision to attend graduate school will be dependant on whether or not she can finance it on her own or whether she has a job that will pay for her furthered education. Currently though, Farley is concentrating on the job search. Farley is networking and keeping up with her resume. “Hopefully, all of this will work out in my favor and help me gain the dream job I will love,” said Farley. No matter which choice a graduating senior makes, they will be stepping into a new experience. They will either be entering the new experience of going to graduate school or learning hands-on skills in the workforce.

I got a feelin’: GreenberryTaylor Contributor
One day, everyone will experience it. Avoiding it is like trying to dodge the inevitable. It might be one of the worst feelings the human soul can endure, besides sitting through an 8:15 a.m. after a heavy night of drinking. And even then, I’d rather have the hangover. The feeling has eluded me so far this year, although, I knew it couldn’t escape it. A visit to the hill a couple of weekends made sure I hadn’t forgotten this inconvenient truth. There I was, leaning against a breezeway wall on the second story of the middle apartment building when I saw her. She cut through the cigarette smoke with the charisma I had been so attracted to. I hadn’t seen her since Christmas Break; she looked amazing. Walking in my direction, I eased from the swank stance I had been positioned. I imagined picking her up and twirling her around through the smoke, giving her the biggest hug ever. But, while playing this out in my head, I saw something. I pushed myself back against the pale, nicotine and booze stained wall – she was with someone else. Stop. Before you assume you know where I’m going with this article, give it a chance. In fact, right now might be a good time to use this page a coaster, or perhaps a makeshift umbrella, the choice is
yours. Give your eyes a rest, and remember how terrible the feeling is. Awful, right? (for those who deny having ever felt this, to say your life is sad would be a vast understatement). Some call it heartache, others call it heartbreak, but I’m pretty sure the word “sucks,” sums it up best. However, I wouldn’t trade this feeling for the world. Relationships are like the wind. They come and go. Every now and again you convince yourself this really is “the one.” If I had a dollar for every time I told myself this, I’d be livin’ the SBXI (Spring Break ’11) life for the rest of my days. Sadly, the saying typically brings empty glasses and a trashcan full of expensive bottles. A week later the weather was cold. My hands were pretty much cash (done), regardless, I couldn’t help but push myself further. My arms were trembling and my nose had started to bleed when my legs finally buckled, sending me falling a good 30-feet before my rope caught. Suspended in mid-air, I looked up towards the sky and then down at the earth below, the sickly, “sucky,” feeling engulfed me as it’s done so many times before. “I hate the stupid ridin’ a bike analogy everyone always uses,” I thought to myself. “There’s a big difference between scrapped up knees, relationships and
almost eating a face full of granite while rock climbing.” Suddenly, and epiphany came over me. Maybe it was the harness cutting off the blood flow in my femoral artery, but I’d like to think it was a moment of enlightenment. You know, similar to the one the Buddha experienced underneath that tree

(what up Fr. Borbridge)? I realized heartbreak is simply our minds signaling failure. Looking up at the gigantic rock face, I had a flashback of her walking up the stairs. So many thoughts rushed my mind it was hard to stand up straight. I put some chalk on my hands and grabbed the rock. It felt familiar as I started
to climb. I reached the point where exhaustion had defeated me and quickly grew nervous. All of the sudden, something pushed me past it. I can’t tell you what it was or that I’ve felt it since. But, I can tell you this; I know it will come again when I actually meet the girl of my dreams.

Go for the big beads:but safely AliciaREEVES Co-editor I was interviewed the other day and was asked two questions that really got me thinking. “What’s your favorite memory at Spring Hill?” and “What do you want to leave behind at Spring Hill after you leave?” Well the first question is tough to narrow down and I don’t really think Spring Hill will construct a statue in my honor. So that leaves me with the answers of Mardi Gras and then this newspaper. I will combine the two and tell you why I love Mardi Gras and also give you tips to celebrate it to the fullest this break. Let me take you back to the February of 2008. I was just a young, innocent soul at this time from the swamps of Southeast Missouri. All Mardi Gras ever meant to me was pigging out with my mom on Fat Tuesday and getting ashes on my head the next day. So it was much to my surprise to see my roommate, from Moss Point, Mississippi, start decorating our room right after Christmas in the now familiar Green, Gold and Purple. I also found out we have a crazy

It’s funny how it works out. There is always at least one person you know at Spring Hill from New Orleans who is more than willing to open up their home to you for Mardi Gras. In which it becomes the official “Mardi Gras Residence,” which I have plugged into my phone as such in case of an emergency (which I highly recommend). Anyway, even though this is my favorite memory most of the weekend endeavors that ensued are not all appropriate for this prestigious publication of ours. However I will say it involved a kiss from Kevin Costner, some big beads, Cupid Shuffling on Bourbon Street, being in a parade, standing on a cooler, and meeting Captain Morgan himself.

Get your tan on the safe way
Keeping your skin protected during Spring Break MaryRIES Lifestyle Editor
As spring break quickly approaches, the last minute race to be “beach ready” is in full swing; but while you are preparing for the beach, be sure to prepare safely. You may want to have a nice base tan before you hit the beach to avoid blinding everyone with your pale body; but, going to the tanning beds before hitting the beach is not the best way to get bronzed. According to kidshealth.org, avoiding UVB rays, the rays you receive a large amount of in a tanning bed, will help decrease your chance of damaging your skin. An alternative way to look sun-kissed before you reach the beach is to try out a sunless tanning lotion.

Oscars in review: A guide to this year’s top films KeliMAZZA Movie Critic
The Academy Awards aired Sunday night, February 27, and “The King’s Speech” had a successful night taking home a number of awards including “The Best Picture.” If you missed it, here is a list of who went home with the gold and how to watch the award winning films. “The King’s Speech” took home four Oscars: Best picture, Best Director, Best actor, and Best Original Screen Play. The film is a historic piece about the man who became King George VI and overcame his stammer, which made him appear unfit to be the king. With the help of Li-
onel Logue, a speech therapist, he is able to make the most important speech for England in which war is declared on Nazi Germany. The film is still in theaters, playing at least three times a day in Mobile. “Black Swan” took home the Oscar for Best Actress. It is the story of Nina, a ballerina in the New York City ballet, who is consumed by her passion to be the best ballerina. When the casting director makes the decision to replace the lead ballerina with someone younger for the production of Swan Lake, Nina is up against Lily, a ballerina who has more spunk while Nina is the more of a delicate dancer. The rivalry turns into a friend-

Spring Break 2011: Movie mania Writer. Comedian. Host. KeliMAZZA Movie Critic
While taking a break from the beach, parades or whatever your Spring Break plans might be, here are a few films that might be worth watching while you are on vacation. Ranging from old to new, you can kick back and enjoy your time off. If you’re looking for a throw back in your life, try “Wayne’s World” the 1992 film starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. For those of you who have not been lucky enough to see the epic Bohemian Rhapsody scene, you are in for a thrill. “Wayne’s World” is the story of Wayne (Myers) who broadcasts his own public access TV show in his basement with his best friend Garth (Carvey). When Wayne and Garth are hired to do the gig professionally for a network station, they find their show changing. Ben Oliver tries to take them down and steal Wayne’s lady Cassan-
dra. The film will add some light hearted silly fun to your Spring Break. If “Wayne’s World” is not quite your thing, try “The Sweetest Thing” (2002) starring Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate. The film is definitely more of a chick flick. The story revolves around Christina Walters (Diaz) and Courtney Rockcliffe’s (Applegate) adventure after Rockcliffe tries to help Walters through a relationship-induced depression by taking her out on the town. While out, Walters meets Peter Donahue (Thomas Jane) thinking he could be Mr. Right. Walters and Rockcliffe set out on a road trip to find him in another town and crash his wedding. The film is light-hearted with some unique comedic scenes and definitely feeds off of typical Diaz humor. If you are in the need of a film with a little more spunk, check out “Bulletproof” (1996) starring Adam
Sandler and Damon Wayans. The film is the story of an undercover police officer named Rock Keats (Wayans) who befriends a drug dealer and car thief named Archie Moses (Sandler) in order to catch drug lord Frank Coltan (James Caan). During this time, Moses and Keats become close friends, almost brothers. Keats in the undercover sting with the LAPD arrests Moses. When the plan goes awry, Coltan gets away. Keats and Moses must figure out their friendship while trying to track down Coltan. This is one of the many successful buddy movies of this era and Sandler and Wayans play well off each other. If none of these fill your film expectations, check out the release dates for the Oscar winners and enjoy your Spring Break at the movies.

sports School spirit or lack there of 13
MattBOSARGE
Sports Editor In a recent vote recorded by the Springhillian, 89% of the students feel that the school has poor school spirit. This is a disturbing statistic and may be the biggest problem with athletics at Spring Hill. All of the teams and athletes at this school work hard and deserve the support of their peers. I decided to ask a few students that frequently visit most of the school’s games. Sophomore Kyle Holloway was asked what he thought of school spirit at the basketball games. “Major lackage”, said Holloway. “When the away team shows us up at our own game, you know it is bad.” The game that Kyle was referring to was the men’s basketball game at home against Mobile, Spring Hill’s biggest rival. The Rams had a nice amount of students at the game, but more importantly they were constantly cheering and yelling for their team, regardless of the game situation. The Spring Hill fans, outside of a small portion of rowdy Badgers, seemed to be sitting on their hands the entire game. Whether they were unsure of when to cheer or simply didn’t have the motivation to do so, the Spring Hill fans got outshined, in their own house. Small things
like that can have a big impact on a game. If you don’t believe me, just go look at records for teams at home compared to away games. The difference is quite obvious. Another student approached me during the Mobile game and complained that the crowd was only standing up during the critical moments. These are bad habits that can infect an entire crowd. Luckily for the baseball team, crowd noise is not quite as important at baseball games as it is in a small closed-off gym. Spring Hill students tend to show up to baseball games, but crowd noise is never “deafening.” Tennis and volleyball matches tend to have smaller crowds at the most, but that’s to be expected with a smaller following. However, the major sports must have better crowd support in the future. Junior Dereck Vaughn said he has an idea that could improve school spirit. “We need pep rallies. Maybe we can get the Badger to dunk the ball at halftime or something. It would get me amped.” I have no idea if more pep rallies and extra curricular stuff would help much with school spirit. However, the old saying “Nowhere to go but up” seems to fit in quite nicely in this instance.

‘Cam-bine’ 2011 MattBOSARGE Sports Editor
If this past year’s Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama was not enough to convince football lovers that the state of Alabama possesses a supreme amount of talent, the NFL Combine surely got the job done. The main attraction at this year’s combine was without a doubt, former Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton. draw tons of attention and this event was no different as some reporters were even calling it “Cam-bine 2011.” In the much anticipated 40 yard dash, the 6’5, 248 pound Newton ran an impressive 4.59 seconds. He also completed a freakish 10-6 broad jump, leading all other quarterbacks in that category. The passing drills didn’t go quite as well as Newton had hoped for as he struggled with the short to intermediate routes. Footwork and timing seem to be the two things see DAREUS 15

Sports Editor Men’s basketball: Badgers drop season finale The Spring Hill men’s basketball team ended the 2010-11 season on a rough note losing 55-47 to the Crusaders of William Carey University. In a physical affair, Spring Hill went into the second half tied up at 25. The game was tied once again at 41 with just over eight minutes left in the game before William Carey went on a 12-1 run to put the game out of reach for the Badgers. Senior Nick Brown ended his fantastic Spring Hill career with a mild 10 points. Spring Hill finished the year with a record of 9-18 and 3-9 in the SSAC West Division. Women’s Basketball: Lady Badgers fall short in season finale William Carey University spoiled the season finale for Spring Hill by taking down the Lady Badgers 56-51. Spring Hill spent most of the second half trailing by around 10 points, not able to stop William Carey from hitting the three-ball. Refusing to give up with just 21 seconds left in the contest, SHC’s Erica Wright reeled off 4 quick points, cutting the Crusader lead to 3. However William Carey answered right back with a pair of free throws on the other end, putting the game out of reach for Coach Fron’s squad. On a positive note, the Lady Badgers improved their record by 8 wins in the 2010-11 season, finishing the year with an 11-19 record and 3-9 in the SSAC West Division. Baseball: Clean sweep of the Bulldogs
Tougaloo College limped home Saturday afternoon after being wrecked in three consecutive games by Spring Hill. Sophomore Casey Adams got the ball rolling for Spring Hill Friday evening with a complete game one-hit shutout in a 12-0 victory over the Bulldogs. A big 4th inning assisted Adams as Spring Hill rattled off 10 runs, with the help of 3 Bulldog errors. On Saturday we saw two Badger blowouts of 8-2 and 11-0 to complete the sweep. Joe Carter threw a complete game in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader, allowing just one earned run. In the following game, Spring Hill decided they would only need 5 innings as the game ended via the 10-run mercy rule. Softball: Spring Hill drops a pair to Bethel In Spring Hill’s first home stand of the season, the Badgers dropped both in a doubleheader against the 15th ranked Bethel College Pilots by scores of 1-0 and 3-2. Badgers pitcher Sam Brooks was dealing in Game 1 and the only run given up was unearned in the 5th inning. Spring Hill tried to get a run across in the 7th inning against Bethel’s Giana Zimmerman, advancing a runner to 2nd with only 1 out, but the Pilots got out of the jam and ended the game. In game 2, Spring Hill went into the 6th inning down 3-1. Holly Brown then laid down a bunt for the Badgers that led to Holli Smith beating the tag to the plate. Jessica Edgar then loaded the bases with a single to right and only one out. The Pilots’ second baseman then made a huge diving catch and throw to the plate to end the inning on a crazy double play. Smith’s two hits would be the best performance on the day for Spring Hill.
Men’s Volleyball: Badgers battle Auburn
The men’s club volleyball team played their first home game ever this past Saturday against Auburn University, losing 3-2 in an intense, back and forth match. Auburn took the first game 25-22 followed by a 25-20 win by the Badgers in Game 2. Auburn took game 3, followed by another Spring Hill win in the 4th, leading to a match-deciding 5th game where Auburn was just too much for Spring Hill, taking the game 15-12. The Badgers are led by team captains Matt Jordan and Tom Wingbermuehle. Both Matt and Tom said that “The 7th player (the crowd) was a very motivating force behind how competitive the team played. It was a tough loss but both teams left a everything out on the court.” Men’s Tennis: Crusaders blast Spring Hill A road trip to Hattiesburg, Miss. on Thursday didn’t end well for Spring Hill as it dropped all of its doubles matches and all but one single match against the William Carey University Crusaders. Sophomore Josh Schultz won 7-6, 6-3 on court 6 was the only victory that Spring Hill could muster. Women’s Tennis: Only one slip up for Lady Crusaders The women’s tennis team faced a similar fate as the men’s team Thursday against William Carey, only picking up one victory in an 8-1 drubbing from the No. 19 Crusaders. Senior Lynne Fritscher snagged the only SHC victory in a tough 7-6, 6-3 win on Court 5.

With Selection Sunday two weeks from now, the college basketball season is coming down to the wire. Only 64 teams will be allowed into the tournament, causing every game in these next two weeks to be of utmost importance. On Monday, the coaches poll was released, with Ohio State regaining control of the #1 spot due to a Duke loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday night. Rounding out the top five was Kansas at #2, BYU at #3, Duke at #4, and Pittsburgh at #5. Brigham Young is making its first appearance in the top

Newton needs to work on the most as the draft creeps closer. Even though Cam Newton stole the show, the most impressive workout all week may have been that of former Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones. Jones ran a blazing 4.39 to go along with this year’s best broad jump of 11-3. The 6’2 wideout may have bumped himself to a Top 10 pick with his combine performance, showing that he has all the tools to be a number 1 receiver for a number of NFL squads. The other pair of prime-time performers from the state of Alabama would be defensive tackles Nick Fairley and Marcel Dareus. Former Auburn lineman Fairley is thought to be the early favorite for number 1 pick of the draft and his workout
“
Monday did nothing to hurt those chances. Fairley ran a 40 yard dash of 4.82 (a 291 pound defensive lineman, mind you) and showed the athleticism that he displayed at Auburn for his entire junior year. Marcel Dareus made a huge move as well impressing scouts with his speed and size throughout the workout. Dareus faced many injuries last season while at Alabama and many close to the big lineman think it greatly hindered his performance throughout conference play. Now that he is healthy, you can expect Dareus to possibly climb into the Top 10.

five after a huge win over conference rival San Diego State, which was previously ranked #4. BYU beat San Diego State on the road 8067 behind leading scorer and frontrunner for National Player of the Year, Jimmer Fredette. Big 12 leader Texas, previously ranked #8, is very likely to fall out of the top ten after losing to rival Kansas State. The loss was Texas’ third in the last four games, and once a favorite to win it all, Texas has continued its slide down the rankings. The loss on Monday night ensures that Kansas will win the Big 12 regular season title and most likely earn a
#1 seed in the tournament. Other predicted #1 seeds are Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and BYU. Dominating the top 25 for another week is the Big East Conference, placing an astounding eight teams in the poll. Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Louisville, Syracuse, Connecticut, St. Johns, Villanova, and Georgetown are all ranked. Looked upon as the best conference in college basketball, it seems likely that the winner of March Madness will likely come from the Big East.
