The Halloween themed festivities will take place on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct.11, with many events tailored to draw in crowds of students and families. The Halloween fun is scheduled to include events like the second annual Brantford zombie walk, costume judging, crafts and more. Being the weekend before the new fall Reading Week, students in downtown residences will have easy access to the events if they choose to stay on campus. “While we anticipate that some students

will use the fall study days as an opportunity to go home, and take time to be mentally and physically well, for those students who stay in Brantford over the weekend this is a wonderful activity to get involved in, said Kevin Klein, Associate Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University Brantford. 'HVSLWH WKH VFKHGXOLQJ FRQà LFW EHWZHHQ the start of Reading Week, and Scare in the Square, organizers are hoping that students will still feel encouraged to participate in Scare in the Square events. According to their website, the Zombie

Walk, sponsored by Brantford Toyota this year, hopes to draw out hundreds of zombies. Participants are encouraged to show off their “zombieness, and will be able to compete in a variety of categories, like “best moan and “best walk. Downtown businesses will also participate in festivities by decorating pumpkins, scarecrows, and their storefronts for the annual Scare in the Square contest. Businesses will open their doors on Saturday afternoon for the Children’s Trick or Treat event. “The Brantford community Scare in the Square is just another example of the wonderful and engaging programming that our partners in the community are putting on downtown, said Klein, “As a university, we are very pleased to have these opportunities for our students to participate in, and engage with citizens and families of Brantford.

Brant United Way connects with Laurier through art Brittany Bennett Opinion Editor Brant United Way had students and “campus celebs get involved by using their hands artistically instead of reaching them in their pockets. This past week, the Brant United Way held a booth and table in the west wing of Laurier’s Research and Academic Centre asking for students and faculty to paint soup mugs for their upcoming soup lunch fundraiser called, Be a Souper Hero. The soup mug painting was scheduled to run from Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day, but due to popularity the stock of soup mugs ran out by Thursday – after the fact of ordering more. The paintit-yourself pottery company, Crock A Doodle partnered with Brant United Way by providing all painting supplies and mugs at a discounted rate as well as $5 gift cards to give to each participant. Many students took part in the soup mug painting, along with “campus celebs such as Brantford Mayor, Chris Friel; MPP, Dave Levac; Dean of Students, Adam Lawrence; Dean of Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Bruce Arai; Dean of Faculty of Liberal Arts, Heidi Northwood; Inter-faculty Associate Dean of Academic Coordination, Kathryn Carter and Associate Vice President of Campus Administration and Special Constable Service, Antonio Araujo. dinator for the Brantford campus, Jeanette Wilson explained. The Brant United Way sees Laurier Brantford as an important part of Brantford’s community, and therefore feels a connection with the students is essential. Wilson said the United Way tries to integrate student involvement on

a different level than with the money factor, “that’s really not the focus, we want to support our students ‌ Without the stress RI Ă€QDQFLDO GRQDWLRQV Âľ ´, Ă€QG LW YHU\ SOHDVDQW GLIIHUHQW WKDQ usual, a happy little break,â€? said Mayor Friel while attending to his soup mug.

This was Friel’s second experience painting with Crock A Doodle, although he refused to call himself an expert just yet. MPP Levac said this was not only a great fundraising technique, but also very important, especially for the students studying concurrent education. Levac is a strong supporter of art, and believes WHDFKHUV QHHG WR Ă€QG WKHLU ´LQQHU DUWLVWÂľ WR excel in their profession. “These kids are giving back and are doing it in a really fun way,â€? said Levac. The faculty deans and Araujo joined the painting table together on Thursday morning. The table used words such as creative, engaging, fun, awesome, and giving when describing their experience with this fundraiser. Waterloo co-op student, Odelia Ho is a campaign assistant for the United Way. Although Ho said she had only been a part of the United Way for about three weeks, she had taken part in multiple events and fundraisers already. Ho admitted this has been her favourite fundraiser yet, “It’s pretty interesting, and fun. Some people wonder why I am with United Way because it is not in my career path, but it’s a great experience ‌ Co-op is the time to learn whatever you want.â€? All soup mugs will be glazed and used in the Be a Souper Hero fundraiser lunch for the Brantford community and Laurier faculty members on November 1st. Tickets for the lunch will cost $25 which includes the hand painted mugs, and all proceeds will go toward the Brant United Way.

Throughout the past four years, Laurier Brantford’s LEAF program has grown from approximately 24 students to 150 students, which is a big accomplishment. The manager of the LEAF program, Valerie Kilgour, notes “Laurier wanted to increase the number of undergraduate students that it had and one really effective way to do that is for the University to have its own English training program and we didn’t have one before.â€? Unfortunately there are still a lot of

domestic students that are unaware of programs including LEAF, which is why the volunteer fair focused on getting the international students more involved with the Laurier community. Program Assistant, Shanna Howse explains, “LEAF students in my experience struggle a little bit to get integrated into the community, whether they are unaware of the programs out there that they can take advantage of or just too shy because of course they are here to learn English and it could just be that language barrier. The students who attended the fair are a level 3, of a 5 leveled program. They are also enrolled in the Global Engagement course. The course facilitator Jaime Hignell noted that she “wanted it to be kind of a hands on course. Even though the course is still evolving, Hignell describes the importance of community involvement. “I think with

this program, in my opinion, we’re trying to get them out into the community and to learn about Canadian student life because a lot of them are not familiar with it and it’s a very different learning style as well.â€? The keys to making an impact as a young hockey player Anthony Fusco Staff Making a hockey team as a young player in any league is no small feat. It’s an intimidating, scary and exhilarating process; that goes double for prospects looking to make an NHL roster. Not only do they have to go up against grown men who have more experience than they do, they also KDYH WR ÀJKW DJDLQVW IHOORZ SURVSHFWV who are looking to make the team as well. You have to walk a thin line between respecting them and trying to give yourself an edge that they might not have. It’s easy to see why so few 18 yearolds make the NHL. For a rookie, a performance like that is nearly unheard of. That stellar season also earned the Cole Harbour native the Calder Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the best rookie in the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs currently have a recently drafted player vying for a place with the big club. William Nylander, son of former NHLer Michael Nylander, has had an impressive pre-season thus far with the Leafs. Memorable opening week to MLB playoffs Kyle Morrison Sports Editor The MLB playoffs began less than a week ago and they have already provided fans with some of the most memorable moments in recent history. All the storylines are there: The underdog is beating the favourite night after night in dramatic fashion and teams are crumbling under the pressure late in games. The raw emotion on the faces of players and fans alike tells the tale; the playoffs are showing that this year, anybody can win the World Series and all it will take is one hit, error or stolen base. Scotland made the right decision Josh Adesina Staff The tension between Scotland and the United Kingdom has become unbearable. If you are someone with a British decent then I am sure you have heard about the situation concerning Scotland’s desire to separate itself from the United Kingdom. Otherwise, the Scottish independence. This has been a huge topic buzzing across the internet and has been interesting for one main reason. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron has been expressing a lot of emotion towards the situation. Scotland and England have had issues in the past, can it be that serious that the Scottish population has to now turn their backs on Great Britain? Weighing out the pros and cons, it does not seem like a wise idea. )LUVW OHW XV ÀQG RXW KRZ VHULRXV WKH issue was between Scotland and England centuries ago before digging into Scotland’s desire for independence. AccordLQJ WR WKH +XIÀQJWRQ 3RVW 8. 6FRWODQG and England were at war over 300 years ago and did not come together until 1707 to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain. United Kingdom’s conservative party – along with Northern Ireland, England DQG :DOHV 6FRWODQG¡V Ă€UVW PLQLVWHU $OH[ Salmond agreed to a referendum deal for Scottish independence with Britain Prime Minister, Cameron. The referendum allowed for the Commonwealth and EU citizens living in Scotland to vote for, or against Scotland’s independence. Although the deal had been agreed upon, Cameron had expressed his disagreement of Scotland separating from the United Kingdom. “We desperately want you to stay. We do not want this family of nations to be ripped apart,â€? said Cameron, according to the Daily Mail UK. The referendum showed 44.7 per cent in favour and 55.3 per cent opposed, according to the Telegraph UK. For Scottish people to be voting against the separation of Scotland from the United Kingdom, it shows that Scotland does not have the same mindset as it did in the distant past. It would not be a wise decision for Scotland to run its own government for a few reasons. First off, Scotland would have to consider rebuilding its culture and economy – along with sorting out new school curriculums. Also, Scotland currently shares debt with the United Kingdom. Revenue and taxes coming

into Scotland would be affected. Can you imagine the grief Scotland would

Swearing is a way of expressing yourself that you can’t do with the standard English language. (Photo by Christina Manocchio)

Ugly language on the outside, pretty helpful on the inside Brittany Bennett Opinion Editor How about that fucking weather eh? Oh shit, pardon my “Frenchâ€?. There I go again! Dammit. Okay, as you can tell the occasional swear word may slip through P\ Ă€OWHU QRZ DQG WKHQÂŤ 2U PD\EH D OLWWOH more often than occasionally. But, is that really such a terrible thing? Swearing is an interesting concept to look into, a form of language that is outside of the realm of the standard English language. Some swear words are just originally known words interpreted in a different way, some swear words can be interpreted as many different forms of profanity depending on the use of the word, and some people interpret swear words in different ways than others. There ought to be a dictionary for all this! I believe swearing is its own language in itself; a way of expressing yourself that you cannot do with the standard English

language. Although the majority of swear words are used in an emotional state of anger, they also provide emphasis and sarcasm in certain situations. Such as my “French above. If one were to say “how about that weather eh? you do not know how exactly they are referring to the weather, but to add that “fucking in there, it puts the sentence into more context; the weather has obviously not been great. Or even my following statement, without the “shit one would not know that I am taken aback from my previous statement. Anger is a very extreme emotion that many people do not know how to express properly. I think swear words can do that for a person, relieve their built up tension and provide a substitute for something more extreme such as violence. What I did not know, was that swearing has actually been proven to make one appear more credible. Three studies were explained in a 2005 journal article called “Appearing credible? Swearing helps! by

Eric Rassin and Simone Van Der Heijden of Erasmus University in the Netherlands. Each tested whether the use of swearing increased or decreased the believability RI D VWDWHPHQW Ă€UVW E\ DVNLQJ WKH UHVSRQdents whether or not swearwords made a statement more credible, then by having participants pick between two testimonies – one including swear words and one not. 7KH UHVXOWV VKRZHG WKDW LQ WKH Ă€UVW VWXG\ respondents found swearwords a sign of deceit, but when put into action the majority of participants chose the testimonies with swearwords. Otherwise proving that people may think swearwords are a bad thing, but in reality swearwords create a sense of trust. Another interesting study was reported in a 2009 journal article called “Swearing as a Response to Painâ€? by Richard Stephens, John Atkins and Andrew Kingston of Keele University in England. This study had participants submerge their hands in icy cold water and rated their pain toler-

ance with and without the use of swearing. The results showed that participants withVWRRG WKH SDLQIXO H[SHULPHQW VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ longer if they repeated a swearword. Cool right? Finally a 2008 journal article called “The Pragmatics of Swearingâ€? by authors Timothy Jay and Kristen Janschewitz summed up what I have already assumed. The appropriateness of swearing is completely contextual. The study asked college students on the offensiveness of swearing in certain hypothetical situations. The answers varied depending on the speakerlistener relationship, the social physical context, and the particular swearword used. As goes most things in life, there is a time and a place for everything and moderation is essential.
