Students: It’s time to decide who will represent the student body at this year’s Homecoming. The voting began when the poll went live at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, and the poll will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. You may vote from the comfort of your own dorm or apartment or log onto any computer on campus and visit http://www.Elections.missouristate.edu. Nii Kpakpo Abrahams Christina Adams Senior | Communication major, sociology minor On-campus activities: Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, SOAR, University Ambassadors, Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honors Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society Why you should vote for him: Having a vulnerable moment, I really do love this school and everything that I have learned from it. My biggest mantra in life is servant leadership. I consider myself a leader on this campus, and being the Homecoming king will give me a bigger opportunity to serve the university. There are still a lot of ideas and things in the works that I would like to do, but more than anything, just serve, and be a strong influence and representation for MSU.
Senior | Majoring in French and hospitality and restaurant administration, minoring in Chinese, ethical leadership and technical writing On-campus activities: Participated in and lead organizations relating to culture, politics, honors, my major, fraternity and sorority life, residence life, student government, and public affairs. Why you should vote for her: I have been involved in a variety of areas across campus. By running for Homecoming queen through a residence hall, I hope to show MO State that Homecoming is not just a fraternity and sorority life event — Homecoming exists to show off school spirit, and organizations big or small, competitive or casual, should participate to the fullest.
Bray Addison Francis Ahrens
Senior | Advertising and promotions, logistics and supply chain management minor On-campus activities: Pi Kappa Alpha, Advertising Club, Order of Omega, Big Brothers Big Sisters Why you should vote for him: Because of the person I am. I pride myself on being a nice person and working hard at everything I do. Whether it’s school, a job, my fraternity, athletics or even just my hobbies, I’m always working and practicing as hard as I can...It’s that type of self-discipline and self-respect that makes people respect me, and it’s certainly why I respect myself. If elected king, I will try to be a role model for others by exemplifying this type of discipline and selfrespect and by showing my passion for my school and its students.
Junior | Public relations major, advertising and promotions minor
On-campus activities: Pi Kappa Phi, Resident Assistant in Freudenberger House, University Ambassadors, Centennial Leader Scholarship, Multicultural Leader Scholar, Graduate of the Distinction in Public Affairs Program, Bear Break's Co-Trip Leader Why you should vote for him: I think I represent a lot of different organizations on campus. If I were named king, I would address the importance of getting involved on campus. So I would push for more organization fairs throughout the year, rather than just New Student Festival. I would also want to do an online video blog with the king and queen highlighting events and organizations.

Adria Baebler
Senior | Spanish, organizational communication major On-campus activities: Xi Omicron Iota, Lutheran Student Center, English Language Institute, tutoring international students, Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society Why you should vote for her: I believe that the Homecoming king and queen of MSU should act as public affairs ambassadors and promote the three pillars of the public affairs mission around campus. One of the ways I would like to do this is by developing programs that increase communication between international and American students at MSU. If elected Homecoming queen, I would like UHC and GEP programs to incorporate a conversation partner activity for American and international students to interact.
Sarah Christenson
Senior | Cell and molecular biology major
On-campus activities: Sigma Kappa, Emerging Leaders, Distinction in Public Affairs, Bear Service Team, Wyrick Committee, Cru, Chi Rho Greek Ministry, and SOAR Why you should vote for her: I want to set up an ongoing partnership with the Ronald McDonald House where students can volunteer beyond cooking meals for the residents. I also want to set up a Twitter account that informs students when and where the king and I will be. Basically, as queen, I want students to feel as if l am another friend that they can come to if they need help with anything.
Allyson Leifer
Senior | Elementary education major

Welcome back, alums 50-year reunions, open houses and tailgates welcome former students back to campus By Brittani Schlager The Standard
Saturday, Oct. 19 Friday, Oct. 18
Homecoming has arrived! The biggest week of the fall semester is here for all students, faculty, family, friends and, of course, alumni. There are dozens of events being held all week long to pump up school spirit and to show off Missouri State. The Alumni Association has put on many events to bring back our alumni during this exciting year. This year, the class of 1963 will be having their 50-year reunion. After being checked in Friday morning, a class picture will be taken of the class of ‘63. Following the photograph, they will be attending a luncheon and will be given the opportunity to get a riding tour of the campus. Later that evening, the class will
be attending the Homecoming dinner and awards ceremony, where members of the class will be recognized and entertained by talented students of Missouri State. On Saturday, the 1963 class will be attending the Golden Bears Reunion Luncheon where the members will be welcomed into the Golden Bears Club and recognized as being alumni for 50 years. Following the luncheon is tailgating and the football game against South Dakota. Foster Recreation Center will be providing tours of the facility to alumni all weekend during operating hours. Active alumni and graduates who were enrolled between 2007 and summer 2012 and paid toward the recreation center may use the FRC all weekend free of cost.

Senior | Public relations major, Spanish and general business minors
On-campus activities: President of Phi Gamma Delta, University Ambassador, Entertainment Chair for Relay For Life, Order of Omega Member, Peer Leader, Student Specialist for Volunteer Programs in the Office of Student Engagement Why you should vote for him: I have been involved in numerous facets of the university and will represent them to my fullest abilities. I want to encourage Bear pride within all students and visit elementary schools to tell children that they should try hard in school and go to college because they are the future.
Molly Reddick Senior | Communication major On-campus activities: Student Activities Council, R.E.A.L. Bears, Gamma Alpha Lambda Why you should vote for her: If elected queen, I hope to enhance students’ connection to MSU. I have a strong passion for getting all students involved in campus life. I would like to work with students who may not have found their place at Missouri State yet, to find their place to give them that sense of connection.
Shane Sullivan
Senior | Logistics and supply chain management major, economics minor On-campus activities: Interfraternity Council President, member of the Logistics & Supply Chain Management Association, Emerging Leaders graduate, Theta Chi Fraternity, former SOAR Leader Why you should vote for him: I want to continue the great line of previous kings before myself and support MSU in thinking bigger and bolder with all aspects on campus. A new tradition that I would like to see happen would be the king and queen candidate reach out to Springfield community clubs and high schools. I think there is a huge opportunity to expand within the Springfield community. If we can bring a sense of pride to be a Bear to local residents, I think the university’s marketing reach will greatly improve.

“Homecoming-up” your tailgating favorites, hit up Pinterest. Pinterest has tons of recipes for tailgating, as well as some out-of-the-box creations. If you’re just keeping it simple, however, stick to favorites like chips and dip, anything grilled and bite-sized desserts. If you want to skimp on the calories without ditching the flavor, try mixing up a package of dry ranch dressing mix with 1 cup of non-fat Greek yogurt. Not only is Greek yogurt high in protein, you won’t miss the fattening stuff since your dip will be thick and creamy. Serve with baby carrots to make it even healthier.
If you are of age, drinking while tailgating is more than acceptable. The most popular drink of choice is good ol’ Natural Light, but since it’s Homecoming, maybe you ought to splurge a little. Maybe even try mixing up a cocktail made with pomegranate juice to get you into the maroon spirit. If turning it up on game-day isn’t your thing, make sure to come to the tailgating events for some free food and entertainment. Don’t forget to support our Bears, either! They play Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at Plaster Sports Complex.

Homecoming competitions get campus organizations involved
Who will be the 2013 Homecoming sweepstakes victors? The Standard Briana Simmons
Every year student organizations, housing and residence life, and fraternity and sorority life compete in several Homecoming competitions. Of the three divisions, only one will come out the victor. Each organization receives points for each competition they participate in, and if your organization places, you’ll receive extra points. The overall winners walk away with monetary prizes and bragging rights for the year. Whitley Denson is the graduate advisor for Homecoming. “Missouri State University Homecoming is run by our students,” Denson said. “There is a committee, which includes two co-directors, that works diligently to provide programming that intends to foster school spirit, tradition and camaraderie amongst students, staff and faculty,” The winners of this competition will be announced at the Homecoming football game Oct. 19.

Band of Bears Homecoming parade to feature floats from student organizations By Sadie Welhoff The Standard
Nothing makes a parade like a float. The Band of Bears Homecoming parade will show off marching bands, local organizations, and, of course, floats to the Springfield community. While the audience sees the finished product, they might not see all the work that went into building the floats. Teams of fraternity and sorority members, student organizations and other members of the community, work on putting together floats. Every team will be competing in the parade for the title of best float.
The teams handle all of the responsibilities of creating the floats, which sometimes takes weeks for everything to be completed. Once the teams come up with the design for the float, they have to find the trailer, purchase all the supplies and find the time to construct it. Typically, teams create their floats out of wood, cardboard or chicken wire and then dress it up with paper designs. Every team has its own theme for the float, but they tend to connect it with the Homecoming theme itself. Check out the parade, which will start at the corner of John Q. Hammons Parkway and Trafficway at 9 a.m. on Oct. 19.
