Effective Strategies to Navigate a Job Fair
By Chandra Johnson
Youʼre in a large room with a zillion tables. A connection to a job is on the line. The stakes are high in this economy. Everyone is ready to go, wearing a power suit, carrying portfolios, and looking confident. Are you there? Are you ready? Do you have a plan? There IS a strategy to navigating a job fair, and this article will help you identify effective ways to get the most out of your job fair experience. Firstly, it will discuss what you should do to prepare for the job fair. Secondly, it will explain what to do while you are at the job fair, and lastly, it will describe what to do after the job fair since your job search doesnʼt end at 5:00.
Before the Job Fair • Identify your transferable skills. Employers are looking for candidates who know what their skills are and how they can be used effectively in their organization. Think about what you have to contribute to them. Keeping a story or two about your excellent communication skills, effective teamwork, or motivational talents might come in handy. • Write an effective résumé that showcases your skills and contributions. When you highlight your contributions, the employer knows that your efforts had a positive impact to your organization and you will likely do the same for them. • Have someone proofread your résumé before making copies. • Go to the Career Center website to find the list of registered employers for the Career Expo. You should spend time researching the companyʼs mission statement, structure, future goals, etc. Take some notes on each company to keep in your portfolio that day. Donʼt bring out your research in front of the employer, but take
breaks to review your notes before speaking to the next employer. Identify talking points and think about how to start the conversation. • Identify organizations you want to visit and prioritize them. To settle your nerves, you may wish to visit first with one or two employers that are on your list, but are not your #1 choice. • Practice your handshake. You should have a firm, confident handshake, not limp or a bone crusher.
Have you practiced your handshake?
At the Fair • Utilize your strategy. Figure out where your first employer is located in the expo. Review your notes for that company, and have a couple conversation starters in your head.
• Take initiative and start the conversation with the employer. This demonstrates your confidence to the interviewer. • Remember that you may not get to spend much time with the employer if there are other students waiting, so stay positive if the conversation doesnʼt last as long as you might have hoped. You can let them know you would like to talk with them further about how you might be an asset to their organization and offer to leave a copy of your résumé and ask for their business card. • After you meet with one employer, try to find a place (off the main expo floor) where you can take some notes about that employer. This will also give you a chance to review your notes for your next employer so you are still ready to impress. After the Career Fair • Reflect on the career fair. What did you do well? What might you have done better? • Follow up on any employer leads you received at the event, applying on the companyʼs website, signing up for an interview, or sending more information. • Identify any companies you didnʼt get a chance to talk with, and follow up with them by submitting your materials for any position youʼre interested in or trying to arrange an informational interview with one of their employees or recruiters.
These are not the only things you can do to prepare for the job fair—and keep in mind this article doesnʼt address attire or how to write a résumé—but it does provide some useful strategies to navigate a job fair effectively. Please donʼt hesitate to visit the Career Center if you have further questions about what to do or expect at the Career Expo!

How Can Your University’s Career Center Help You?
By Jill Wiggins Director, Career Center Drury University
Although every universityʼs career center will differ in some ways, most have similar missions to help students develop skills that will last a lifetime. Some of the most common resources provided by career centers include self-assessment tools, experiential education opportunities, programming, assistance developing marketing tools, and coaching students through the job search or graduate school application process.
You can develop skills and gain information through programming offered by your career center.
Exploring your personality, interests, skills/abilities, and values will give you direction in choosing the major(s) and career(s) that are the best fit for you. Check with your career center to find out which assessments are offered. Once you have the results of your selfassessment, you should do as much research as possible when considering different majors
and careers to make sure you find a good fit. The most powerful type of research is experiential learning – spending time observing or working in different environments. This includes part-time jobs, job shadowing, informational interviews, volunteering and internships/co-ops. You can develop skills and gain information through programming offered by your career center. Topics might include self-assessment, dressing for success, etiquette dinners, interviewing, cover letter/resume writing, budgeting, benefits, the pitfalls of digital dirt, and the job search process. You will need a set of tools to use when marketing yourself to employers and graduate schools. Those tools might include cover letters, résumés, references, and portfolios. Your career center can assist you in developing these tools. When you are ready to search for a position, whether it is part-time or full-time, job search resources are imperative. Some of the resources provided by your career center may include alumni networking, on-campus recruiting, job fairs, online job/resume databases, mock interviews and general advice about the job search process. If you start working with your campus career center early in your college career, you will definitely have an advantage as college graduation approaches.

Jack Henry & Associates- SILVER A technology provider for the financial industry. That’s the simplest way to describe what we do. But it hardly describes what Jack Henry & Associates is really about. We’re about solutions and support. We’re about building relationships and making things work. We’re about doing the right things for our customers, no matter what. It began as a vision, and it’s become our tradition. In an industry that’s seen more than its share of change, we’ve held fast to one truth for thirty years: That our customers’ success is the only real measure of our own success. It’s simple, and obvious. But through the years it’s helped us stay focused on what is real. People are real. Shaking hands is real. Making sure a customer has what they need to be successful yet still knowing that they can call for support at any time is real. That is what has made Jack Henry & Associates who we are today, and who we will continue to be tomorrow.

Career Fair Follow Up
Now that youʼve survived the career fair, you are probably wondering, “what do I do next?” The answer is that you want to continue to show your interest in employers by sending them a follow-up thank-you note or by calling them if they indicate it is acceptable to do so. The main purpose of this is to reiterate your interest in their company and the positions they have to offer. It is best to follow up within a few days of attending the career fair. You want to show that you are eager and build on the connection made at the

event. The first step is to review your notes and any company-specific materials you collected in order to decide which employers you would like to follow up with. It is important to make a good impression on everyone you talk to, but you only really need to follow up with those companies you
are genuinely interested in working for or maintaining a connection with. You can type, hand-write, or e-mail your letter. It is also a good idea to include your résumé just in case it was lost. Reviewing your notes and companyspecific materials can also assist you in composing the letter. Including information from the conversation you had with the recruiter as well as from the print materials can help you tailor each letter to that specific company. This is important in order to help the recruiter remember you and for you to show why it is that you want to work for that company specifically.
A follow-up phone call may also be appropriate if the recruiter indicated it was acceptable to do so. Review your notes and print materials from the employer and practice what you want to say before you make the call. At this time, you can ask the recruiter any additional follow-up questions you may have and ensure that your job application is complete.
You want to stand out against the rest of the eager candidates, right? Then follow up with employers to make yourself more memorable!
